Thin plastic sheet eliminates need for expensive plating

Gasket of a commercially available plastic material is interposed between the mating surfaces in axial joints where a hard and a soft metal are in intimate contact under stress conditions. This eliminates the fretting problem and is quicker and less expensive than the plating process.

Tooling concepts for assembly of large structures

Manufacture of the S-IC stage of the Saturn V space vehicle has resulted in new. concepts and innovations in the field of tooling. The structure size (35-ft diameter), the high reliability and accuracy requirements, and the low density or production quantity lead to a greater degree of simplicity, economy, and versatility in fabrication and assembly tooling. There are three specific concepts which should be applicable in industry, local jigging for welding, rotation of structures in vertical assemblies, and the assembly of two structures. The usual weld jigging serves a two-fold purpose: (a) to support the molten weld puddle and (b) to force and maintain alinement of the parts being welded. The extension of this method to large-diameter tanks is expensive and difficult. An alternate procedure used at MSFC is to perform free-state welding and use local jigging (stra1rclamps) and intermittent tack welding. Cylindrical structures can be accurately rotated for routing or welding on a simplified ring turntable. The tool consists of a ring of the structure diameter resting on rollers. Torque is nearly zero since the ring is rotated by friction rollers with the force being applied at the ring perimeter. Two such turntables are used at MSFC. The horizontal mating of two large components, where controlled motions of small magnitude are necessary, can be easily done by positioning units equipped with air-bearings. Such bearings are usable on concrete of minimum surface preparation and require no special air pressure source. This concept is used in assembly of the two S-IC containers.

Fixture facilitates helium leak testing of pipe welds

Fixture facilitates inspection testing of circumferential pipe welds for vacuum tightness, using helium gas as a leakage tracer in conjunction with a mass spectrometer. It consists of a split rubber torus and a mating clamping ring with a vacuum hose fitting.

Spherical joint connects axially misaligned flanges

Interconnecting straight tube connects axially misaligned flanges in a duct assembly. It adjusts to accommodate variations in relative location of the flanges by pivoting. Adjustment is by spherical mating faces and a spherical-faced indexing swivel flange for bolting backup.

Tensile testing grips are easily assembled under liquid nitrogen

Split-screw grips for tensile testing provide uniform loading on the specimen shoulders. Holes in the heads enable the screws and specimen to be threaded as an assembly into a grip body, closely controlled guides and seats afford positive seating, and precision machining of mating surfaces minimizes misalignment effects.

Reconnect mechanism

Mechanism remotely controls de-mating of two bodies by unlock and withdrawal of one body from the other and, upon command, extends, locates, remates and relocks the two bodies. The system is designed to transfer fluids from a dispensing body to a receiving body.

Cryogenic seal concept for static and dynamic conditions

Seal rings reduce cryogenic pump seal leakage under static and dynamic conditions. The rings are fitted into annular diaphragms, which are affected by cryogenic pressure and temperature, to move against a mating ring, to increase seal-bearing loads under static conditions.

Precisely repeatable rotary mechanism

Precision-finished lead screw and a fitted mating nut member produce a linear translatory motion. This motion is transformed to a rotary movement of a pivotal platform member. The transformation is achieved by coupling the nut member and the platform member through a pair of opposed, taut, flex bands.

An electrical connector pin protector

Spring loaded insert protects electrical connector pins from being bent due to improper mating, or probing the pins with a screwdriver. This device modifies existing electrical connectors using only springs and retaining pins.

Improved quick-disconnect electrical connector

Electrical connector is fitted with an O ring, moisture-proof seal, is shielded in both the mated and unmated positions, and is equipped with one keying and three locking spheres.

Flat conductor cable connector with contact separation seal

Cable connector is developed in which each pair of contact elements is isolated by plastic cells and the mating interface is sealed by an elastic gasket. So insulated, the connector may be operated under high vacuum conditions at voltages up to 600 V ac without electrical leakage or intercontact ionization.

Vee-notch tool cuts specimens

Triangular cutting tool uses carbide tips for notching heat-treated or abrasive materials, and alloys subjected to high structural stresses. The tool is rigidly mounted in a slot of mating contour to prevent deflection during cutting of tensile specimens. No other expensive machine equipment is required.

Miniature multicontact connectors

Connectors, which have 4 to 9 contacts, are engaged through a hole with a minimum diameter of 0.030 inch. They are constructed of concentric brass and nylon components assembled with a light, firm press-fit. They withstand several thousand mating cycles and each outer contact has a one ampere capacity.
