Magnetic charge and geometry confluence for ultra-low forward voltage diode in artificial honeycomb lattice

We report spin diode is important prerequisite to practical manifestation of spin electronics. Yet, a functioning magnetic diode at room temperature is still illusive. Here, we reveal diode-type phenomena due to magnetic charge mediated conduction in artificial honeycomb geometry, made of concave shape single domain permalloy element. We find that honeycomb lattice defies symmetry by populating vertices with low and high multiplicity magnetic charges, causing asymmetric magnetization, in applied current of opposite polarity. High multiplicity units create highly resistive network, thereby inhibiting magnetic charge dynamics propelled electrical conduction. However, practical realization of this effect requires modest demagnetization factor in constituting element. Concave structure fulfills the condition. Subsequently, magnetic diode behavior emerges across broad thermal range of T = 40 K–300 K. The finding is a departure from the prevailing notion of spin-charge interaction as the sole guiding principle behind spintronics. Consequently, a new vista, mediated by magnetic charge interaction, is envisaged for spintronic research.

Lattice QED in an external magnetic field: Evidence for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking

We simulate quantum electrodynamics (QED) in a strong constant homogeneous external magnetic field on a Euclidean space-time lattice using the rational hybrid Monte Carlo method, developed for simulating lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Our primary goal is to measure the chiral condensate in the limit when the input electron mass m is zero. We observe a nonzero value, indicating that the external magnetic field catalyzes chiral symmetry breaking as predicted by approximate truncated Schwinger-Dyson methods. Such behavior is associated with dominance by the lowest Landau level which causes the effective dimensional reduction from 3 + 1 dimensions to 1 + 1 dimensions for charged particles (electrons and positrons) where the attractive forces of QED can produce chiral symmetry breaking with a dynamical electron mass and associated chiral condensate. Since our lattice simulations use bare (lattice) parameters, while the Schwinger-Dyson analyses work with renormalized quantities, direct numerical comparison will require renormalization of our lattice results. Spin texture induced by non-magnetic doping and spin dynamics in 2D triangular lattice antiferromagnet h -Y(Mn,Al)O 3

Novel effects induced by nonmagnetic impurities in frustrated magnets and quantum spin liquid represent a highly nontrivial and interesting problem. A theoretical proposal of extended modulated spin structures induced by doping of such magnets, distinct from the well-known skyrmions has attracted significant interest. Here, we demonstrate that nonmagnetic impurities can produce such extended spin structures in h-YMnO 3 , a triangular antiferromagnet with noncollinear magnetic order. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we measured the full dynamical structure factor in Al-doped h-YMnO 3 and confirmed the presence of magnon damping with a clear momentum dependence. Our theoretical calculations can reproduce the key features of the INS data, supporting the formation of the proposed spin textures. As such, our study provides the first experimental confirmation of the impurity-induced spin textures. It offers new insights and understanding of the impurity effects in a broad class of noncollinear magnetic systems.

Joint Theoretical and Experimental Study of the Electronic, Magnetic, and Lattice Phonon Dynamics Properties of Ca x Fe y O z Compounds Applied to CO 2 Capture

Unleashing energy innovation ensures a resilient and reliable energy supply. There is a critical need for the development of new carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) captors that have improved energy efficiency accompanied by lower capital and operational costs to ensure abundant, affordable, and secure energy. Among solid materials, CaO is a good CO 2 sorbent for capture technology due to its wide availability and low cost. However, CaO also suffers from some disadvantages, such as high calcination temperature, decreasing capability due to sintering, attrition, and reaction with SO x and NO x . In this study, we employed an ab initio thermodynamic approach and experimental measurements to improve its CO 2 capture performance during the cycles. To do so, we explored the electronic, magnetic, and lattice dynamic properties of a series of calcium ferrites (Ca x Fe y O z ) and applied them for CO 2 capture. Our results showed that all of them can thermodynamically react with CO 2 to form CaCO 3 and iron oxides. Compared to pure CaO capturing CO 2 , CaFe 3 O 4 , CaFe 2 O 4 , and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 could shift the CO 2 regeneration temperature to a lower range. The experimental measurements showed that CaFeO 2 is a good CO 2 captor with or without the presence of an O 2 presence. The calculated thermodynamic properties of Ca x Fe y O z capturing the CO 2 reactions can be used to find their operational temperature ranges for different CO 2 capture technologies.

Spin dynamics and a nearly continuous magnetic phase transition in an entropy-stabilized oxide antiferromagnet

In this work, the magnetic order and the spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic entropy-stabilized oxide (Mg 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )O (MgO-ESO) have been studied using muon spin relaxation (μSR) and inelastic neutron scattering. We find that antiferromagnetic order develops gradually in the sample volume as it is cooled below 140 K, becoming fully ordered around 100 K. The spin dynamics show a critical slowing down in the vicinity of the transition, and the magnetic order parameter grows continuously in the ordered state. These results indicate that the antiferromagnetic transition is continuous but proceeds with a Gaussian distribution of ordering temperatures. Additionally, the magnetic contribution to the specific heat determined from inelastic neutron scattering likewise shows a broad feature centered around 120 K. High-resolution inelastic neutron scattering further reveals an initially gapped spectrum at low temperature which sees an increase in a quasielastic contribution upon heating until the ordering temperature.

Plasma Dynamics and Nonthermal Particle Acceleration in 3D Nonrelativistic Magnetic Reconnection

Understanding plasma dynamics and nonthermal particle acceleration in 3D magnetic reconnection has been a long-standing challenge. In this paper, we explore these problems by performing large-scale fully kinetic simulations of multi-X-line plasmoid reconnection with various parameters in both the weak- and strong-guide-field regimes. In each regime, we have identified its unique 3D dynamics that lead to field-line chaos and efficient acceleration, and we have achieved nonthermal acceleration of both electrons and protons into power-law spectra. The spectral indices agree well with a simple Fermi acceleration theory that includes guide-field dependence. In the low-guide-field regime, the flux rope kink instability governs the 3D dynamics for efficient acceleration. The weak dependence of the spectra on the ion-to-electron mass ratio and β ($\ll$1) implies that the particles are sufficiently magnetized for Fermi acceleration in our simulations. While both electrons and protons are injected at reconnection exhausts, protons are primarily injected by perpendicular electric fields through Fermi reflections and electrons are injected by a combination of perpendicular and parallel electric fields. The magnetic power spectra agree with in situ magnetotail observations, and the spectral index may reflect a reconnection-driven size distribution of plasmoids instead of the Goldreich–Sridhar vortex cascade. As the guide field becomes stronger, the oblique flux ropes of large sizes capture the main 3D dynamics for efficient acceleration. Intriguingly, the oblique flux ropes can also experience flux rope kink instability, to drive extra 3D dynamics. This work has broad implications for 3D reconnection dynamics and particle acceleration in heliophysics and astrophysics.

Dynamically preferred state with strong electronic fluctuations from electrochemical synthesis of sodium manganate

Electrochemical (de)intercalation is a delicate method to precisely control the alkaline ion composition in alkaline transition metal oxides. Because of complicated interactions, metal charge ordering patterns can form spontaneously at special fractional alkaline compositions and orderings. In this study, we show that this elegant electrochemical process can create dynamically preferred structures in an anharmonic energy landscape that conventional syntheses and computations can rarely visit. Specifically, electrochemically prepared Na 1/2 MnO 2 ordering exhibits abnormal structure distortions, charge orderings, and dynamical activities. Strong magnetic fluctuations and lattice dynamics are observed in an unusually wide temperature range in Na 1/2 MnO 2 , which distinguishes it from all other Na x MnO 2 at higher or lower Na compositions. The results emphasize the unique opportunity of using electrochemical processes to design and create novel quantum states with strongly coupled and mutually enhanced electronic and lattice fluctuations, likely through a special dynamic charge flux functional, as suggested by our computational investigations.

Quantifying Spin-Mixed States in Ferromagnets

We quantify the presence of spin-mixed states in ferromagnetic 3D transition metals by precise measurement of the orbital moment. While central to phenomena such as Elliot-Yafet scattering, quantification of the spin-mixing parameter has hitherto been confined to theoretical calculations. We demonstrate that this information is also available by experimental means. Comparison of ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results show that Kittel’s original derivation of the spectroscopic g factor requires modification, to include spin mixing of valence band states. Our results are supported by ab initio relativistic electronic structure theory.

Hypersonic Magneto-Fluid-Dynamic Compression in Cylindrical Inlet

Hypersonic magneto-fluid-dynamic interaction has been successfully performed as a virtual leading-edge strake and a virtual cowl of a cylindrical inlet. In a side-by-side experimental and computational study, the magnitude of the induced compression was found to be depended on configuration and electrode placement. To better understand the interacting phenomenon the present investigation is focused on a direct current discharge at the leading edge of a cylindrical inlet for which validating experimental data is available. The present computational result is obtained by solving the magneto-fluid-dynamics equations at the low magnetic Reynolds number limit and using a nonequilibrium weakly ionized gas model based on the drift-diffusion theory. The numerical simulation provides a detailed description of the intriguing physics. After validation with experimental measurements, the computed results further quantify the effectiveness of a magnet-fluid-dynamic compression for a hypersonic cylindrical inlet. At a minuscule power input to a direct current surface discharge of 8.14 watts per square centimeter of electrode area produces an additional compression of 6.7 percent for a constant cross-section cylindrical inlet.

Magnetic skyrmion diode: Unidirectional skyrmion motion via symmetry breaking of potential energy barriers

In this work, we realize a magnetic skyrmion diode operated by a unidirectional skyrmion transport that flows in only one direction, which is highly significant for information processing in spintronic and nanoelectronic devices. We easily control the skyrmion transport by engineering asymmetric shapes of geometric structures. Here, we present a simple method to describe the underlying mechanism behind the unidirectional skyrmion transport by characterizing the topography of potential energy surfaces from a purely geometric perspective. Our approach enables a deeper physical insight into skyrmion transport manipulation and efficient design of skyrmion-based devices in geometric structures.

Effects of Magnetic Fields on Gas Dynamics and Star Formation in Nuclear Rings

Nuclear rings at the centers of barred galaxies are known to be strongly magnetized. To explore the effects of magnetic fields on star formation in these rings and nuclear gas flows, we run magnetohydrodynamic simulations in which there is a temporally constant magnetized inflow to the ring, representing a bar-driven inflow. The mass inflow rate is 1M ⊙ yr –1 , and we explore models with a range of field strength in the inflow. We adopt the TIGRESS framework developed by Kim & Ostriker to handle radiative heating and cooling, star formation, and resulting supernova (SN) feedback. We find that magnetic fields are efficiently amplified in the ring due to rotational shear and SN feedback. Within a few 100 Myr, the turbulent component Btrb in the ring saturates at ~35 μG (in rough equipartition with the turbulent kinetic energy density), while the regular component Breg exceeds 50 μG. Expanding superbubbles created by clustered SN explosions vertically drag predominantly toroidal fields from near the midplane to produce poloidal fields in high-altitude regions. The growth of magnetic fields greatly suppresses star formation at late times. Simultaneously, strong magnetic tension in the ring drives radially inward accretion flows from the ring to form a circumnuclear disk in the central region; this feature is absent in the unmagnetized model.

Effect of iron vacancies on magnetic order and spin dynamics of the spin ladder BaFe 2-δ S 1.5 Se 1.5</sub

Quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenides possess various magnetic states depending on the lattice distortion, electronic correlations, and presence of defects. Here we present neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the spin ladder compound BaFe 2-δ S 1.5 Se 1.5 with ~6% iron vacancies. The data reveal that long-range magnetic order is absent, while the characteristic magnetic excitations that correspond to both the stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations are observed. First-principles calculations support the existence of both stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic short-range orders in the experimental sample. The disappearance of long-range magnetic order may be due to the competition between these two magnetic orders, which is greatly enhanced for a certain concentration of iron vacancies, which we calculate to be about 6%, consistent with the measured iron vacancy concentration. Our results highlight how iron vacancies in the iron-based spin ladder system strongly influence the magnetic ground state.
