Test of lepton flavor universality and search for lepton flavor violation in B → Kℓℓ decays

We present measurements of the branching fractions for the decays B → Kμ + μ - and B → Ke + e - , and their ratio (R K ), using a data sample of 711 fb -1 that contains 772 × 10 6 B$\bar{B}$ events. The data were collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e - collider. The ratio R K is measured in five bins of dilepton invariant-mass-squared (q 2 ): q 2 $\epsilon$ (0.1, 4.0), (4.00, 8.12), (1.0, 6.0), (10.2, 12.8) and (> 14.18) GeV 2 /c 4 , along with the whole q 2 region. The R K value for q 2 $\epsilon$ (1.0, 6.0) GeV 2 /c 4 is 1.03$^{+0.28}_{-0.24}$ ± 0.01. The first and second uncertainties listed are statistical and systematic, respectively. All results for RK are consistent with Standard Model predictions. We also measure CP-averaged isospin asymmetries in the same q 2 bins. The results are consistent with a null asymmetry, with the largest difference of 2.6 standard deviations occurring for the q 2 $\epsilon$ (1.0, 6.0) GeV 2 /c 4 bin in the mode with muon final states. The measured differential branching fractions, dB/dq 2 , are consistent with theoretical predictions for charged B decays, while the corresponding values are below the expectations for neutral B decays. We have also searched for lepton-flavor-violating B → Kμ ± e ∓ decays and set 90% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction in the range of 10 -8 for B + → K + μ ± e ∓ , and B 0 → K 0 μ ± e ∓ modes.

Search for heavy resonances and quantum black holes in eμ, eτ, and μτ final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is reported for heavy resonances and quantum black holes decaying into eμ, eτ, and μτ final states in proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The eμ, eτ, and μτ invariant mass spectra are reconstructed, and no evidence is found for physics beyond the standard model. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for lepton flavor violating signals. Three benchmark signals are studied: resonant τ sneutrino production in R parity violating supersymmetric models, heavy Z' gauge bosons with lepton flavor violating decays, and nonresonant quantum black hole production in models with extra spatial dimensions. Resonant τ sneutrinos are excluded for masses up to 4.2TeV in the eμ channel, 3.7TeV in the eτ channel, and 3.6TeV in the μτ channel. A Z' boson with lepton flavor violating couplings is excluded up to a mass of 5.0TeV in the eμ channel, up to 4.3Te V in the eτ channel, and up to 4.1TeV in the μτ channel. Quantum black holes in the benchmark model are excluded up to the threshold mass of 5.6TeV in the eμ channel, 5.2TeV in the eτ channel, and 5.0TeV in the μτ channel. In addition, model-independent limits are extracted to allow comparisons with other models for the same final states and similar event selection requirements. The results of these searches provide the most stringent limits available from collider experiments for heavy particles that undergo lepton flavor violating decays.

Search for vector-like leptons coupling to first- and second-generation Standard Model leptons in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of vector-like leptons coupling to first- and second-generation Standard Model leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset of proton-proton collisions at s$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. Events are categorised depending on the flavour and multiplicity of leptons (electrons or muons), as well as on the scores of a deep neural network targeting particular signal topologies according to the decay modes of the vector-like leptons. In each of the signal regions, the scalar sum of the transverse momentum of the leptons and the missing transverse momentum is analysed. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No significant excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed and limits are set at 95% confidence level on the production cross-sections of vector-like electrons and muons as a function of the vector-like lepton mass, separately for SU(2) doublet and singlet scenarios. The resulting mass lower limits are 1220 GeV (1270 GeV) and 320 GeV (400 GeV) for vector-like electrons (muons) in the doublet and singlet scenarios, respectively.

Search for charged-lepton flavor violation in top quark production and decay in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Results are presented from a search for charged-lepton flavor violating (CLFV) interactions in top quark production and decay in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The events are required to contain one oppositely charged electron-muon pair in the final state, along with at least one jet identified as originating from a bottom quark. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. This analysis includes both the production (q → eμt) and decay (t → eμq) modes of the top quark through CLFV interactions, with q referring to a u or c quark. These interactions are parametrized using an effective field theory approach. With no significant excess over the standard model expectation, the results are interpreted in terms of vector-, scalar-, and tensor-like CLFV four-fermion effective interactions. Finally, observed exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence levels on the respective branching fractions of a top quark to an eμ pair and an up (charm) quark of 0.13 × 10$^{-6}$ (1.31 × 10$^{-6}$), 0.07 × 10$^{-6}$ (0.89 × 10$^{-6}$), and 0.25 × 10$^{-6}$ (2.59 × 10$^{-6}$) for vector, scalar, and tensor CLFV interactions, respectively.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for lepton-flavor-violating τ decays into a lepton and a vector meson using the full Belle data sample

Charged-lepton-flavor-violation is predicted in several new physics scenarios. We update the analysis of τ lepton decays into a light charged lepton (ℓ = e ± or μ ± ) and a vector meson (V 0 = ρ 0 , Φ, ω, K *0 , or $\overline{K}$ *0 ) using 980 fb -1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. No significant excess of such signal events is observed, and thus 90% credibility level upper limits are set on the τ → ℓV 0 branching fractions in the range of (1.7–4.3) × 10 -8 . These limits are improved by 30% on average from the previous results.

Search for central exclusive production of top quark pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with tagged protons

A search for the central exclusive production of top quark-antiquark pairs ($t\overline{t}$) is performed for the first time using proton-tagged events in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 29.4 fb -1 . The $t\overline{t}$ decay products are reconstructed using the central CMS detector, while forward protons are measured in the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer. An observed (expected) upper bound on the production cross section of 0.59 (1.14) pb is set at 95% confdence level, for collisions of protons with fractional momentum losses between 2 and 20%.

Search for resonant and non-resonant Higgs boson pair production in the $b\overline{b}{\tau}^{+}{\tau}^{-}$ decay channel using 13 TeV $pp$ collision data from the ATLAS detector

A search for Higgs boson pair production in events with two $b$-jets and two $τ$-leptons is presented, using a proton–proton collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Higgs boson pairs produced non-resonantly or in the decay of a narrow scalar resonance in the mass range from 251 to 1600 GeV are targeted. Events in which at least one $τ$-lepton decays hadronically are considered, and multivariate discriminants are used to reject the backgrounds. No significant excess of events above the expected background is observed in the non-resonant search. The largest excess in the resonant search is observed at a resonance mass of 1 TeV, with a local (global) significance of 3.1$σ$ (2.0$σ$). Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the non-resonant Higgs boson pair-production cross-section at 4.7 (3.9) times the Standard Model prediction, assuming Standard Model kinematics, and on the resonant Higgs boson pair-production cross-section at between 21 and 900 fb (12 and 840 fb), depending on the mass of the narrow scalar resonance.

Search for vector-like leptons with long-lived particle decays in the CMS muon system in proton-proton collisions at $$\sqrt{\text{s}}$$ = 13 TeV

Abstract A first search is presented for vector-like leptons (VLLs) exclusively decaying into a light long-lived pseudoscalar boson and a standard model τ lepton. The pseudoscalar boson is assumed to have a mass below the τ + τ − threshold, so that it decays exclusively into two photons. It is identified using the CMS muon system. The analysis is carried out using a data set of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1. Selected events contain at least one pseudoscalar boson decaying electromagnetically in the muon system and at least one hadronically decaying τ lepton. No significant excess of data events is observed compared to the background expectation. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the vector-like lepton production cross section as a function of the VLL mass and the pseudoscalar boson mean proper decay length. The observed and expected exclusion ranges of the VLL mass extend up to 700 and 670 GeV, respectively, depending on the pseudoscalar boson lifetime.

Search for supersymmetry in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV in events with high-momentum Z bosons and missing transverse momentum

A search for new physics in events with two highly Lorentz-boosted Z bosons and large missing transverse momentum is presented. The analyzed proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{−1}$, were recorded at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The search utilizes the substructure of jets with large radius to identify quark pairs from Z boson decays. Backgrounds from standard model processes are suppressed by requirements on the jet mass and the missing transverse momentum. No significant excess in the event yield is observed beyond the number of background events expected from the standard model. For a simplified supersymmetric model in which the Z bosons arise from the decay of gluinos, an exclusion limit of 1920 GeV on the gluino mass is set at 95% confidence level. This is the first search for beyond-standard-model production of pairs of boosted Z bosons plus large missing transverse momentum.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for lepton-flavor-violating τ – → μ – μ + μ – decays at Belle II

We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decay τ – → μ – μ + μ – using a 424 fb –1 sample of data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e – collider. The selection of e + e – → τ + τ – events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. We observe one signal candidate, which is compatible with the expectation from background processes. We set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.9 × 10 –8 on the branching fraction of the τ – → μ – μ + μ – decay, which is the most stringent bound to date.

Search for lepton-flavor-violating tau-lepton decays to ℓγ at Belle

Charged lepton flavor violation is forbidden in the Standard Model but possible in several new physics scenarios. In many of these models, the radiative decays τ ± → ℓ ± γ (ℓ = e, μ) are predicted to have a sizeable probability, making them particularly interesting channels to search at various experiments. An updated search via τ ± → ℓ ± γ using full data of the Belle experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 988 fb –1 , is reported for charged lepton flavor violation. No significant excess over background predictions from the Standard Model is observed, and the upper limits on the branching fractions, B(τ ± → μ ± γ) ≤ 4.2 × 10 –8 and B(τ ± → e ± γ) ≤ 5.6 × 10 –8 , are set at 90% confidence level.

Search for leptoquarks decaying into the bτ final state in pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for leptoquarks decaying into the $bτ$ final state is performed using Run 2 proton-proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb —1 at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. The benchmark models considered in this search are vector leptoquarks with electric charge of 2/3e and scalar leptoquarks with an electric charge of 4/3e. No significant excess above the Standard Model prediction is observed, and 95% confidence level upper limits are set on the cross-section times branching fraction of leptoquarks decaying into bτ. For the vector leptoquark production two models are considered: the Yang-Mills and Minimal coupling models. In the Yang-Mills (Minimal coupling) scenario, vector leptoquarks with a mass below 1.58 (1.35) TeV are excluded for a gauge coupling of 1.0 and below 2.05 (1.99) TeV for a gauge coupling of 2.5. In the case of scalar leptoquarks, masses below 1.28 (1.53) TeV are excluded for a Yukawa coupling of 1.0 (2.5). Finally, an interpretation of the results with minimal model dependence is performed for each of the signal region categories, and limits on the visible cross-section for beyond the Standard Model processes are provided.

Search for a high-mass dimuon resonance produced in association with b quark jets at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for high-mass dimuon resonance production in association with one or more b quark jets is presented. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Model-independent limits are derived on the number of signal events with exactly one or more than one b quark jet. Results are also interpreted in a lepton-flavor-universal model with Z′ boson couplings to a bb quark pair (g$_{b}$), an sb quark pair (g$_{b}$δ$_{bs}$), and any same-flavor charged lepton (g$_{ℓ}$) or neutrino pair (g$_{ν}$), with |g$_{ν}$| = |g$_{ℓ}$|. For a Z′ boson with a mass $ {m}_{{\textrm{Z}}^{\prime }} $ = 350 GeV (2 TeV) and |δ$_{bs}$| < 0.25, the majority of the parameter space with 0.0057 < |g$_{ℓ}$| < 0.35 (0.25 < |g$_{ℓ}$| < 0.43) and 0.0079 < |g$_{b}$| < 0.46 (0.34 < |g$_{b}$| < 0.57) is excluded at 95% confidence level. Finally, constraints are set on a Z′ model with parameters consistent with low-energy b → sℓℓ measurements. In this scenario, most of the allowed parameter space is excluded for a Z′ boson with 350 < $ {m}_{{\textrm{Z}}^{\prime }} $ < 500 GeV, while the constraints are less stringent for higher $ {m}_{{\textrm{Z}}^{\prime }} $ hypotheses. This is the first dedicated search at the LHC for a high-mass dimuon resonance produced in association with multiple b quark jets, and the constraints obtained on models with this signature are the most stringent to date.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Reconstruction and identification of boosted di-τ systems in a search for Higgs boson pairs using 13 TeV proton-proton collision data in ATLAS

In this paper, a new technique for reconstructing and identifying hadronically decaying τ+τ- pairs with a large Lorentz boost, referred to as the di-τ tagger, is developed and used for the first time in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. A benchmark di-τ tagging selection is employed in the search for resonant Higgs boson pair production, where one Higgs boson decays into a boosted $b\overline b$ pair and the other into a boosted τ+τ- pair, with two hadronically decaying τ-leptons in the final state. Using 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, the efficiency of the di-τ tagger is determined and the background with quark- or gluon-initiated jets misidentified as di-τ objects is estimated. The search for a heavy, narrow, scalar resonance produced via gluon-gluon fusion and decaying into two Higgs bosons is carried out in the mass range 1–3 TeV using the same dataset. No deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed, and 95% confidence-level exclusion limits are set on this model.

Search for direct production of GeV-scale resonances decaying to a pair of muons in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for direct production of low-mass dimuon resonances is performed using $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment during the 2017–2018 operation of the CERN LHC with an integrated luminosity of 96.6 fb$^{−1}$. The search exploits a dedicated high-rate trigger stream that records events with two muons with transverse momenta as low as 3 GeV but does not include the full event information. The search is performed by looking for narrow peaks in the dimuon mass spectrum in the ranges of 1.1–2.6 GeV and 4.2–7.9 GeV. No significant excess of events above the expectation from the standard model background is observed. Model-independent limits on production rates of dimuon resonances within the experimental fiducial acceptance are set. Competitive or world’s best limits are set at 90% confidence level for a minimal dark photon model and for a scenario with two Higgs doublets and an extra complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S). Values of the squared kinetic mixing coefficient ε$^{2}$ in the dark photon model above 10$^{−6}$ are excluded over most of the mass range of the search. In the 2HDM+S, values of the mixing angle sin(θ$_{H}$) above 0.08 are excluded over most of the mass range of the search with a fixed ratio of the Higgs doublets vacuum expectation tan β = 0.5.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for direct production of electroweakinos in final states with one lepton, jets and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Searches for electroweak production of wino-like chargino pairs, ${\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^{+}{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^{-}$, and of wino-like chargino and next-to-lightest neutralino, ${\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^{\pm }{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_2^0$, are presented. The models explored assume that the charginos decay into a W boson and the lightest neutralino, ${\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^{\pm}\to {W}^{\pm }{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0$. The next-to-lightest neutralinos are degenerate in mass with the chargino and decay to ${\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0$ and either a Z or a Higgs boson, ${\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_2^0\to Z{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0$ or $h{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0$. The searches exploit the presence of a single isolated lepton and missing transverse momentum from the W boson decay products and the lightest neutralinos, and the presence of jets from hadronically decaying Z or W bosons or from the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of b-quarks. The searches use 139 fb –1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018. No deviations from the Standard Model expectations are found, and 95% confidence level exclusion limits are set. Chargino masses ranging from 260 to 520 GeV are excluded for a massless ${\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0$ in chargino pair production models. Degenerate chargino and next-to-lightest neutralino masses ranging from 260 to 420 GeV are excluded for a massless ${\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0$ for ${\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_2^0\to Z{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0$. For decays through an on-shell Higgs boson and for mass-splitting between ${\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^{\pm }/{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_2^0$ and ${\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0$ as small as the Higgs boson mass, mass limits are improved by up to 40 GeV in the range of 200–260 GeV and 280–470 GeV compared to previous ATLAS constraints.
