Generation of the invariant coefficients of the characteristic polynomial for an nxn matrix

In theories of numerical stability, roots to a characteristic polynomial are sought, which, in the case of the predictor with iterative correction method of numerical integration, are eigenvalues of a matrix whose elements depend on the coefficients used in the integration process. The characteristic polynomial is displayed explicitly in terms of the elements of the characteristic matrix.

An iterative technique to stabilize a linear time invariant multivariable system with output feedback

An iterative procedure for determining the constant gain matrix that will stabilize a linear constant multivariable system using output feedback is described. The use of this procedure avoids the transformation of variables which is required in other procedures. For the case in which the product of the output and input vector dimensions is greater than the number of states of the plant, general solution is given. In the case in which the states exceed the product of input and output vector dimensions, a least square solution which may not be stable in all cases is presented. The results are illustrated with examples.

On an invariance property of acoustic waveguides

The acoustic power transmitted by a variable-area duct section which carries a steady subsonic flow is investigated under the conditions of both upstream- and downstream-propagating incident plane waves. It is found that the ratio of the power transmitted by incident waves moving against the flow to the power transmitted by incident waves moving with the flow is equal to the ratio of the difference between the Mach number and unity to the square of the sum of the Mach number and unity.

A critical evaluation of invariant second-order closure models for subsonic boundary layers

Computations based on several second-order turbulence models, including full Reynolds stress and two-equation models, are compared with a number of boundary-layer experiments. In general, the models represent the data reasonably well, with skin friction tending to be somewhat overpredicted in the far downstream region of the adverse pressure gradient experiments. A discussion of the behavior of the ARAP full Reynolds stress model in predicting the components of the Reynolds stress tensor is given. It is concluded that compatibility at the wall may necessitate the use of more than one length scale.
