Direct-reading inductance meter

Meter indicates from 30 nH to 3 micro H. Reference inductor of 15 micro H is made by winding 50 turns of Number 26 Formvar wire on Micrometal type 50-2 (or equivalent) core. Circuit eliminates requirement for complex instrument compensation prior to taking coil inductance measurement and thus is as easy to operate as common ohmmeter.

The Rome-GSFC magnetic field experiment for Helios A and B /E 3/

The Rome-GSFC magnetic field experiment utilizes a triaxial fluxgate (saturable inductor) magnetometer. The sensor unit is mounted on the end of a boom approximately four meters from the spacecraft spin axis. The three analog outputs of the magnetometer are converted into three 9 bit digital words. The experiment utilizes an automatic inflight range switch to select the optimum dynamic range out of 4 ranges. A nonmagnetic thermally oscillating actuator is used to reorient the sensor unit by 90 deg to determine all three axes zero levels. The accuracy should be approximately plus or minus 0.1 gamma. The vector measurements are made at equal intervals in time ranging from 16 per second down to 1 per second depending on the telemetry bit rate.

Table-aided design of the energy-storage reactor in dc-to-dc converters

A new procedure for the selection of magnetic cores for use in energy-storage dc-to-dc power converters which eliminates the need for an automated computer search algorithm and stored data file is presented. The converter configurations included in the procedure are the three commonly encountered single-winding converters for voltage step-up, for current step-up and for voltage step-up/current step-up, and for the two-winding converter for voltage step-up/current step-up. For each converter configuration, three types of controllers are considered - constant-frequency, constant on-time and constant off-time. Using concepts developed from analyses of these converters by considering the transfer of energy by means of an energy-storage inductor or transformer, a special table of parameters calculated from magnetic core data is constructed and leads to a considerably simplified design procedure.

The dc-to-dc converters employing staggered-phase power switches with two-loop control

A switched inductor voltage is coupled to a sense winding in each phase, and all sense windings are connected in series to one of two feedback loops to provide a signal that indicates when one of the power switches is on as the principal determinant of switching instants. A sequencer is triggered each time a pulse generator is triggered to turn on a different power switch in sequence at each switching instant.

Computer aided nonlinear electrical networks analysis

Techniques used in simulating an electrical circuit with nonlinear elements for use in computer-aided circuit analysis programs are described. Elements of the circuit include capacitors, resistors, inductors, transistors, diodes, and voltage and current sources (constant or time varying). Simulation features are discussed for dc, ac, and/or transient circuit analysis. Calculations are based on the model approach of formulating the circuit equations. A particular solution of transient analysis for nonlinear storage elements is described.

Insulation end life determination for completed form-wound generators

Tests were conducted to predict remaining electrical insulation life of a polyimide-epoxy insulated 60 kW form-wound homopolar inductor generator following completion of 23,130 hours of turbo-generator endurance tests. The generator stator was sectioned to provide five sections, designated statorettes, and to permit 33 coil dielectric measurements on each section. Thermal aging tests were conducted on each section at select elevated temperatures to establish an Arrhenius life-temperature plot for end-life prediction and product or application use. The statorette fabrication technique is considered novel and provides means to establish insulation life-temperature profiles on completed electromagnetic components of rotating machines.

Potential damage to DC superconducting magnets due to the high frequency electromagnetic waves

Experimental data are presented in support of the hypothesis that a dc superconducting magnet coil does not behave strictly as an inductor, but as a complicated electrodynamic device capable of supporting electromagnetic waves. Travel times of nanosecond pulses and evidence of sinusoidal standing waves were observed on a prototype four-layer solenoidal coil at room temperature. Ringing observed during switching transients appears as a sequence of multiple reflected square pulses whose durations are related to the layer lengths. With sinusoidal excitation of the coil, the voltage amplitude between a pair of points on the coil exhibits maxima at those frequencies such that the distance between these points is an odd multiple of half wavelength in free space. Evidence indicates that any disturbance, such as that resulting from switching or sudden fault, initiates multiple reflections between layers, thus raising the possibility for sufficiently high voltages to cause breakdown.

Electric prototype power processor for a 30cm ion thruster

An electrical prototype power processor unit was designed, fabricated and tested with a 30 cm mercury ion engine for primary space propulsion. The power processor unit used the thyristor series resonant inverter as the basic power stage for the high power beam and discharge supplies. A transistorized series resonant inverter processed the remaining power for the low power outputs. The power processor included a digital interface unit to process all input commands and internal telemetry signals so that electric propulsion systems could be operated with a central computer system. The electrical prototype unit included design improvement in the power components such as thyristors, transistors, filters and resonant capacitors, and power transformers and inductors in order to reduce component weight, to minimize losses, and to control the component temperature rise. A design analysis for the electrical prototype is also presented on the component weight, losses, part count and reliability estimate. The electrical prototype was tested in a thermal vacuum environment. Integration tests were performed with a 30 cm ion engine and demonstrated operational compatibility. Electromagnetic interference data was also recorded on the design to provide information for spacecraft integration.

Generalized computer-aided discrete time domain modeling and analysis of dc-dc converters

A generalized discrete time domain modeling and analysis technique is presented for all types of switching regulators using any type of duty-cycle controller, and operating in both continuous and discontinuous inductor current. State space techniques are employed to derive an equivalent nonlinear discrete time model that describes the converter exactly. The system is linearized about its equilibrium state to obtain a linear discrete time model for small signal performance evaluations, such as stability, audiosusceptibility and transient response. The analysis makes extensive use of the digital computer as an analytical tool. It is universal, exact and easy to use.

A programmable power processor for a 25 kW power module

The paper presents the concept and major design problems of a programmable power processor for the 25 kW electrical power system for the Shuttle Orbiter. The load will be handled by three parallel power stages operated in phase sequence with each power transistor having its own commutating diode and filter inductor. The power stages will be run at a fixed frequency of 10 kHz with the 'on'-time variable up to 100%. The input filter bank in the breadboard programmable power processor is planned to be a series-parallel combination of tantalum cased tantalum wet-slug capacitors.

Dynamo action in a thin slab

We consider the dynamo action produced by convection of a partially ionized, electrically conducting gas in a magnetic field. The model consists of two thin, Cartesian unipolar inductors connected in series by the magnetic field. For the case of a uniform magnetic field we compute the total current system generated by an arbitrary gas flow; for the case of a nonuniform field, we compute only the field-aligned coupling current. Application is made to the solar atmosphere.

Inductive energy storage for MPD thrusters

The high thrust density of the self-field magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thruster makes it a promising candidate for many advanced space missions. The high power requirements of this thruster lead to its operation in a pulsed mode from an energy storage device. The system characteristics of an inductive energy storage circuit with a solar array power from 25 kwe to 400 kwe are considered, by solving the circuit equations for the inductor charge and discharge phases. Using simple analytic models of the circuit components, the total system efficiency and inductance are determined as functions of the array output power and circuit resistance. The total system efficiency increases with array power and is acceptable only for low values of circuit resistance, indicating that superconducting circuitry may be desirable. The optimum charge-discharge cycle changes fundamentally as the circuit resistance is decreased through a critical value dependent on the thruster operating characteristics.
