Protect Your Family: Reduce Contamination at Home: A Summary of a Study Conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health

Congress enacted the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) without including specific provisions for protecting the privacy of healthrelated information. The law gave Congress three years to enact such requirements and provided that if it failed to do so the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) was obligated to promulgate regulations to implement the statutory standards. When Congress failed to meet the deadline, the obligation to issue privacy regulations passed to DHHS. DHHS received over 52,000 comments on the proposed regulations. Responses to the comments and the final rule were published in the Federal Register on December 28, 2000. The cost of implementing the regulations over a ten-year period was estimated at $17.6 billion by DHHS. Industry estimates the cost at five times that amount.

Assessing the New Home Market Opportunity: Case Study and Cost Modeling for Solar and Storage in 2030

In 2020, the United States had a cumulative 19 gigawatts (GWdc) of residential solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity. A growing percentage of these solar installations are paired with battery storage, up from 0.1% in 2015 to 8.1% in 2020. Some states are considering or have already adopted policy mandates to require solar and storage systems. The cost of installing residential solar and battery storage projects remains a barrier to widespread adoption nationwide. For example, the cost of a typical residential retrofit solar and storage system ranges from $\$ 26,153$ to $\$ 37,909$, which is 38% to 100% higher than a standalone PV system.

Guidelines for Home Energy Professionals: Standard Work Specifications (SWS) Maintenance Charter and Procedures

The SWS were built by industry, for industry, and DOE and NREL facilitated the process to create them. The goal of the SWS maintenance process is to continue the consensus-based engagement to ensure the SWS content remains a relevant resource for promoting industry- accepted practices and maintaining consistency throughout the industry. This SWS Maintenance Charter and Procedures document defines the SWS maintenance process to provide transparency to stakeholders in how the SWS are maintained.

Bill Savings vs. Backup Power: Evaluating operational tradeoffs for home solar+storage systems [Slides]

Adoption of residential solar photovoltaic+energy storage systems (PVESS) is driven by both bill savings opportunities and customer demand for backup power. Prior work by this team (Gorman et al., 2022; Gorman et al., 2023) explored PVESS backup power capabilities during long-duration power interruptions (e.g., due to severe weather events), when customers are assumed to be able to anticipate the event and charge their batteries in advance. In many cases, however, power interruptions are unpredictable (and often relatively short); for those types of events, a customer will typically set its battery to maintain some minimum capacity in reserve in case of an interruption, which reduces the capacity available for managing utility bills. This study evaluates this operational tradeoff to help customers and installers configure backup reserve settings, and to inform decision-making more generally about the customer value of backup power services compared to utility bill savings. This study utilizes Berkeley Lab’s PRESTO tool to produce stochastic simulations of (predominantly short-duration) power interruption events, and builds on an earlier case-study demonstrating PVESS backup performance during short-duration interruptions (Baik et al., 2023).

Environmentally Friendly Use of Carbon Ore for Advanced Building Materials for Homes and Commercial Buildings

Through this effort, X-MAT CCC sought to confirm the utility and commercialization potential of carbon-derived building materials (CDBM) technology licensed from our partner, Semplastics. These CDBM products contain at least 52% coal-derived carbon by mass. Including the binders within the resin, the products contain at least 71% carbon by mass overall, meeting a key criterion for DE-FOA-0002185 – Area of Interest (AOI) 5 – Design Research and Development, Validation, and Fabrication of a Prototype Carbon-Based Building. The Phase II project has resulted in a technology demonstrator prototype structure, a detailed design for a carbon-based building, and updated techno-economic analysis (TEA) including detailed market surveys to show the commercial viability of CDBM products. We pursued the following objectives in Phase II: (1) construction of a partial building shell as a technology demonstrator, (2) testing of CDBM products, individually and in assemblies, (3) demonstration of bonding of CDBM and traditional building materials (TBM) in structural applications, (4) production of a detailed design for a carbon-based building, and (5) an update of the TEA that was performed in Phase I. In Phase II, X-MAT CCC and our industry team performed the development and testing needed to improve the maturity of the technology from a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 5 to TRL 6. CDBM have been shown by our partner Semplastics to exhibit a number of high-performance characteristics, including high strength (five times the flexure strength of the best commercial brick, and more than twice the compressive strength of construction-grade concrete block), lower density, improved mechanical durability and abrasion resistance, very high temperature stability, and resistance to chemicals, acids, salts, and water. These properties offer significant improvements over conventional building materials. Phase II built upon the work accomplished in Phase I by performing technical and economic research and development to confirm the viability of CDBM as commercial products in various markets. R.U.N. Motion VR Boots: Realistic Unimpeded Natural (RUN) Motion Boots for VR gaming in the comfort of your home

Virtual reality (VR) gaming has experienced increasingly widespread adoption in recent years largely due to the development of affordable, consumer-grade headsets equipped with high quality, miniature displays and compact sensors for motion tracking. These devices are now able to provide users with immersive experiences that far surpass what traditional video games can achieve. However, despite these technological strides, a fundamental limitation remains: VR users are unable to move freely in their physical environment without the risk of colliding with real-world obstacles and hazards. This safety concern significantly restricts the level of immersion and natural movement possible in VR gaming.

CyTRICS™ Assessment Report: Whole Home Battery Applications

This report examines the software supply chain security posture of mobile applications developed for consumer whole-house battery and energy-management products. While these applications are not currently integrated with critical infrastructure, their growing role in connected energy domain spaces underscores the importance of understanding the external dependencies, permission structures, and runtime behaviors that could introduce systemic risk; particularly, if adoption expands into more critical environments.
