A numerical study of the spectral radiative properties of packed bed with mixed bauxite and silica spheres

Bauxite and silica particles have gained increasing attention for applications in the field of concentrated solar power. In this work, a Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulation is performed to predict the radiative properties (absorptance, reflectance, and transmittance) of packed beds with mixed bauxite and silica spherical particles at wavelengths of 0.5, 2.6, 9.0, and 9.35 µm. These wavelengths are representative for the visible, near-infrared, and the mid-infrared regions that are important for solar and thermal radiation, respectively. A repeating unit-column approach is used to mathematically represent the particle bed. The effects of particle mixing ratio, volume fraction, and wavelength on the predicted radiative properties are examined. The obtained radiative properties are inputted to an inverse method to retrieve the effective absorption and scattering coefficients as well as the scattering albedo, which may be later used in a continuous-scale radiative heat transfer analysis. Furthermore, the independent scattering model is used to obtain the absorption coefficient and scattering albedo based on the absorption and scattering cross sections predicted by a Monte Carlo algorithm for a single particle. It is shown that the independent scattering model underpredicts the scattering coefficient for opaque particles but overpredicts the scattering coefficient for semitransparent particles for sufficiently high particle volume fractions. Here, the radiative properties calculated from the independent scattering model are compared to the full Monte Carlo simulation of the particle bed to examine the influence of particle mixing on dependent scattering.

Numerical Investigation of Wall-Cooling Effect on Aero-Optical Distortions for Hypersonic Boundary Layer

Compressible wall-modeled large-eddy simulations of Mach 8 turbulent boundary-layer flows over a flat plate were carried out for the conditions of the hypersonic wind tunnel at Sandia National Laboratories. The simulations provide new insight into the effect of wall cooling on the aero-optical path distortions for hypersonic turbulent boundary-layer flows. Four different wall-to-recovery temperature ratios, 0.3, 0.48, 0.71, and 0.89, are considered. Despite the much lower grid resolution, the mean velocity, temperature, and resolved Reynolds stress profiles from the simulation for a temperature ratio of 0.48 are in good agreement with those from a reference direct numerical simulation. The normalized root-mean-square optical path difference obtained from the present simulations is compared with that from reference direct numerical simulations, Sandia experiments, as well as predictions obtained with a semi-analytical model by Notre Dame University. Here the present analysis focuses on the effect of wall cooling on the wall-normal density correlations, on key underlying assumptions of the aforementioned model such as the strong Reynolds analogy, and on the elevation angle effect on the optical path difference. Wall cooling is found to increase the velocity fluctuations and decrease the density fluctuations, resulting in an overall reduction of the normalized optical path distortion. Compared to the simulations, the basic strong Reynolds analogy overpredicts the temperature fluctuations for cooled walls. Also different from the strong Reynolds analogy, the velocity and temperature fluctuations are not perfectly anticorrelated. Finally, as the wall temperature is raised, the density correlation length, away from the wall but inside the boundary layer, increases significantly for beam paths tilted in the downstream direction.

Design complexity and performance analysis in additively manufactured heat exchangers

The main objective of this research is to investigate the tradeoffs between design complexity and thermal performance in additively manufactured metallic heat exchangers. Such heat exchangers have become a favorite topic for investigation in various fields ranging from air conditioning to aircraft gas turbine engines. In particular, high manufacturing cost has emerged as the major drawback in broad applications of manifold-microchannel heat exchanger (MMHXs). The possibility of cost-effective manufacturing has generated wide interest in applying additive manufacturing (AM) for fabricating MMHXs. Furthermore, AM technologies will provide an opportunity for enhanced design and superior heat transfer performance. In this study, innovative MMHXs are designed and fabricated through selective laser melting. An experimental setup was designed to measure pressure drop and heat transfer for the developed MMHXs with a wide range of Reynolds numbers. Furthermore, the coefficient of performance was calculated based on the heat flow rate, air pressure drop, and air flow rate. Measurement results demonstrated that in some scenarios adding more internal features, i.e., increasing design complexity, does not necessarily improve the MMHX performance.

Experimental Characterization of an Additively Manufactured Inconel 718 Heat Exchanger for High-Temperature Applications

This work presents the experimental results of a novel, air-to-air, additively manufactured manifold-microchannel heat exchanger with straight fins on both sides. The heat exchanger was made of Inconel 718 using a direct metal laser sintering technique. The overall core size of the heat exchanger was 94 mm × 87.6 mm × 94.4 mm, with a fin thickness of 0.220 mm on both the hot and cold sides. The heat exchanger was tested with pressurized nitrogen gas at 300 °C and 340 kPa for the hot side, while air at an ambient condition was used for the cold side. An overall heat transfer of 276 W/m2K was obtained for Reynolds number values of 132 and 79 for the cold and hot sides, respectively. A gravimetric heat transfer density (Q/m∆T) of 4.7–6.7 W/kgK and a volumetric heat transfer density (Q/V∆T) of 6.9–9.8 kW/m3K were recorded for this heat exchanger with a coefficient of performance value that varied from 42 to 52 over the operating conditions studied here. The experimental pressure drop results were within 10% of the numerical values, while the corresponding heat transfer results were within 17% of the numerical results, mainly due to imperfections in the fabrication process. Despite this penalty, the performance of the tested heat exchanger was superior to the conventional plate-fin heat exchangers: more than 60% of improvements in both gravimetric and volumetric heat transfer densities were recorded for the entire range of experimental data.
