On Black Holes as Macroscopic Quantum Objects

The relative flow of the Schwarzschild vs. the proper time during the classical evolution of a collapsing shell in the Schwarzschild coordinates practically forces us to interpret black hole formation as a highly non-local quantum process in which a shell/anti-shell pair is created within the incipient horizon, thus canceling out the original collapsing shell exactly at the horizon. By studying quantum fields in the black hole background, we reveal similar non-local effects. Among other things, the outgoing member of the Hawking pair very quickly becomes entangled with the black hole geometry (and not its partner), which is in contrast with the usual assumption that the Hawking pair is maximally entangled according to the local geometry near the horizon. Also, an infalling wave affects the black hole geometry even before it crosses the horizon. Finally, we find that a particle takes a finite amount of time to tunnel in and out of the black hole horizon, and thus avoids infinite blue and redshift in processes happening exactly at the horizon. These findings strongly support the picture of a black hole as a macroscopic quantum object.

Self-consistent interaction of linear gravitational and electromagnetic waves in non-magnetized plasma

Here, this paper explores the hybridization of linear metric perturbations with linear electromagnetic (EM) perturbations in non-magnetized plasma for a general background metric. The local wave properties are derived from first principles for inhomogeneous plasma, without assuming any symmetries of the background metric. First, we derive the effective (“oscillation-center”) Hamiltonian that governs the average dynamics of plasma particles in a prescribed quasimonochromatic wave that involves metric perturbations and EM fields simultaneously. Then, using this Hamiltonian, we derive the backreaction of plasma particles on the wave itself and obtain gauge-invariant equations that describe the resulting self-consistent gravito-electromagnetic (GEM) waves in a plasma. The transverse tensor modes of gravitational waves are found to have no interaction with the plasma and the EM modes in the geometrical-optics limit. However, for $longitudinal$ GEM modes with large values of the refraction index, the interplay between gravitational and EM interactions in plasma can have a strong effect. In particular, the dispersion relation of the Jeans mode is significantly affected by electrostatic interactions. As a spin-off, our calculation also provides an alternative resolution of the so-called Jeans swindle.

Algorithmic Advancements for High-Order Self-Gravitating Hydrodynamics

Self-gravity plays a key role in the formation and evolution of many astronomical objects. Though gravity is often dominant at large scales, other forces (e.g., gas pressure gradients, radiation, and/or magnetic fields) often compete. It is therefore essential for numerical simulations to evaluate their interplay accurately and robustly. Hanawa & Mullen derived a 4th-order accurate finite volume scheme to solve the equations of self-gravitating hydrodynamics on a uniform Cartesian grid. In this work, we supply improvements to the algorithm that (1) mitigate spurious gravitational circulation and (2) greatly simplify the evaluation of the high order corrections. The proposed algorithm provides the gravitational acceleration (ρg) and the gravitational energy release (ρv · g) as source terms for the hydrodynamic equations, all while preserving conservation of linear momentum. Spurious heating and/or cooling associated with truncation error in the numerical evaluation of the gravitational energy release decreases in proportion to the fourth power of the cell width. We demonstrate fourth order convergence on smooth problems (e.g., 3D inclined sound wave propagation and 3D equilibria). An application test tracks the spherical collapse of a polytrope by an imposed, sudden decrease of the central gas pressure; a bounce and second collapse (associated with a spherical accretion shock) are robustly captured by the high order algorithm.

The Dynamics of Debris Disk Creation in Neutron Star Mergers

Abstract The detection of GW170817/AT2017gfo inaugurated an era of multimessenger astrophysics, in which gravitational-wave and multiwavelength photon observations complement one another to provide unique insight into astrophysical systems. A broad theoretical consensus exists, in which the photon phenomenology of neutron star mergers largely rests upon the evolution of the small amount of matter left on bound orbits around the black hole or massive neutron star remaining after the merger. Because this accretion disk is far from inflow equilibrium, its subsequent evolution depends very strongly on its initial state, yet very little is known about how this state is determined. Using both snapshot and tracer particle data from a numerical relativity/MHD simulation of an equal-mass neutron star merger that collapses to a black hole, we show how gravitational forces arising in a nonaxisymmetric, dynamical spacetime supplement hydrodynamical effects in shaping the initial structure of the bound debris disk. The work done by hydrodynamical forces is ∼10 times greater than that due to time-dependent gravity. Although gravitational torques prior to remnant relaxation are an order of magnitude larger than hydrodynamical torques, their intrinsic sign symmetry leads to strong cancellation; as a result, hydrodynamical and gravitational torques have a comparable effect. We also show that the debris disk’s initial specific angular momentum distribution is sharply peaked at roughly the specific angular momentum of the merged neutron star’s outer layers, a fewr g c, and identify the regulating mechanism.

GR-Athena++: General-relativistic Magnetohydrodynamics Simulations of Neutron Star Spacetimes

We present the extension of GR-Athena++ to general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) for applications to neutron star spacetimes. The new solver couples the constrained transport implementation of Athena++ to the Z4c formulation of the Einstein equations to simulate dynamical spacetimes with GRMHD using oct-tree adaptive mesh refinement. We consider benchmark problems for isolated and binary neutron star spacetimes demonstrating stable and convergent results at relatively low resolutions and without grid symmetries imposed. The code correctly captures magnetic field instabilities in nonrotating stars with total relative violation of the divergence-free constraint of 10 –16 . It handles evolutions with a microphysical equation of state and black hole formation in the gravitational collapse of a rapidly rotating star. For binaries, we demonstrate correctness of the evolution under the gravitational radiation reaction and show convergence of gravitational waveforms. We showcase the use of adaptive mesh refinement to resolve the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability at the collisional interface in a merger of magnetised binary neutron stars. GR-Athena++ shows strong scaling efficiencies above 80% in excess of 10 5 CPU cores and excellent weak scaling is shown up to ~5 × 10 5 CPU cores in a realistic production setup. GR-Athena++ allows for the robust simulation of GRMHD flows in strong and dynamical gravity with exa-scale computers.

Stringent constraints on neutron-star radii from multimessenger observations and nuclear theory

The properties of neutron stars are determined by the nature of the matter that they contain. These properties can be constrained by measurements of the star’s size. We obtain stringent constraints on neutron-star radii by combining multimessenger observations of the binary neutron-star merger GW170817 with nuclear theory that best accounts for density-dependent uncertainties in the equation of state. We construct equations of state constrained by chiral effective field theory and marginalize over these using the gravitational-wave observations. Combining this with the electromagnetic observations of the merger remnant that imply the presence of a short-lived hypermassive neutron star, we find that the radius of a 1.4 M⊙ neutron star is $R_{1.4M_⊙} = 11.0^{+0.9}_{-0.6} km$ (90% credible interval). Finally, using this constraint, we show that neutron stars are unlikely to be disrupted in neutron star–black hole mergers; subsequently, such events will not produce observable electromagnetic emission.

Surface stress tensor and junction conditions on a rotating null horizon

The general form of the surface stress tensor of an infinitesimally thin shell located on a rotating null horizon is derived, when different interior and exterior geometries are joined there. Even though the induced metric on the surface must be the same approached from either side, the first derivatives of the metric need not be. Such discontinuities lead to a Dirac δ-distribution in the Einstein tensor localized on the horizon. For a general stationary axisymmetric geometry the surface stress tensor can be expressed in terms of two geometric invariants that characterize the surface, namely the discontinuities [κ] and [J] of the surface gravity κ and angular momentum density J. The Komar energy and angular momentum are given in coordinates adapted to the Killing symmetries, and the surface contributions to each determined in terms of [κ] and [J] . Guided by these, a simple modification of the original Israel junction conditions is verified directly from the Einstein tensor density to give the correct finite result for the surface stress, when the normal n to the surface is allowed to tend continuously to a null vector. The relation to Israel’s original junction conditions, which fail on null surfaces, is given. The modified junction conditions are suitable to the matching of a rotating “black hole” exterior to any interior geometry joined at the Kerr null horizon surface, even when the surface normal is itself discontinuous and the Barrabès-Israel formalism is also inapplicable. This joining on a rotating null horizon is purely of the matter shell type and does not contain a propagating gravitational shock wave.

Development of a Testbed for Pipeline Flushing - 20425

Pipelines which carry high-level waste within the DOE complex should be properly flushed in the cases where stationary or moving beds of solid sediment occur, or lines are prone to hydrogen gas buildup. Present guidelines establish a minimum for the amount of water (flush volume) and flush velocity values used for post-transfer flushing operations to achieve satisfactory cleaning of pipelines. However, further studies are needed to find optimal operating velocity modes/values in order to minimizing the flush volume and consequent downstream waste. These efforts are significantly helpful to DOE waste remediation sites by preserving tank storage, preventing additional waste processing, and minimizing dilution and changes in waste chemistry. An experimental test loop was recently developed for study of non-Newtonian slurry flushing at the Florida International University (FIU). This loop was designed to create sediment beds of various materials and bed heights and investigate parameters that effect the efficiency of flushing operations. The objective is to find flush velocity values/modes which lead to satisfactory cleaning of transport lines with a minimum amount of water usage. A 165 ft experimental test loop made of 3-inch carbon steel pipes was constructed and used in initial testing campaigns. This pipe loop was equipped with real-time monitoring instruments to record variation of pressure, density, mass flow rate, and temperature during testing. Post-flush in-situ no-flow evaluations were performed using ultrasonic, endoscopy, and visual inspection. Additional post-flush evaluations were conducted using filtration and density monitoring of residuals within a designated circulations loop. These provisions enable comparison of pipeline cleanness before the start and after termination of flushing operations for efficiency evaluation. This paper presents efforts associated with flushing of kaolin-water mixtures at different concentrations and with various flush volume and flush velocity values/modes. In initial testing, efforts focused on creating repeatable sediment beds inside the pipeline in both fully-flooded (no pre-flush drainage) and gravity-drained (pre-flush drained) systems. Bed characterization (i.e., measurement of sediment height and solids concentration) was conducted to ensure about consistency of initial conditions between tests. Preliminary results for flushing study of 10% vol. kaolin-water mixtures starting from a fully-flooded initial condition showed that flushing with 1-line volume (65 gallons) could remove up to 72 percent of solids from the pipeline. Universal features of 2 → N scattering in QCD and gravity from shockwave collisions

A remarkable double-copy relation of Einstein gravity to QCD in Regge asymptotics is Γ μ ν = 1 2 C μ C ν − 1 2 N μ N ν , where Γ μ ν is the gravitational Lipatov vertex in the 2 → 3 graviton scattering amplitude, C μ its Yang-Mills counterpart, and N μ the QED bremsstrahlung vertex. In QCD, the Lipatov vertex is a fundamental building block of the BFKL equation describing the 2 → N scattering of gluons at high energies. Likewise, the gravitational Lipatov vertex is a key ingredient in a 2D effective field theory framework describing trans-Planckian 2 → N graviton scattering. We construct a quantitative correspondence between a semiclassical Yang-Mills framework for radiation in gluon shockwave collisions and its counterpart in general relativity. In particular, we demonstrate the Lipatov double copy in a dilute-dilute approximation corresponding to R S , L , R S , H ≪ b , where R S , L , R S , H are the respective emergent Schwarzchild radii generated in shockwave collisions and b is the impact parameter. We outline extensions of the correspondence developed here to the dilute-dense computation of gravitational wave radiation in the close vicinity of one of the black holes, the construction of graviton propagators in the shockwave background, and a renormalization group approach to compute 2 → N amplitudes that incorporates graviton Reggeization and coherent graviton multiple scattering. Study of the agreement between binary neutron star ejecta models derived from numerical relativity simulations

Neutron star mergers have recently become a tool to study extreme gravity, nucleosynthesis, and the chemical composition of the Universe. To date, there has been one joint gravitational and electromagnetic observation of a binary neutron star merger, GW170817, as well as a solely gravitational observation, GW190425. In order to accurately identify and interpret electromagnetic signals of neutron star mergers, better models of the matter outflows generated by these mergers are required. We compare a series of ejecta models to see where they provide strong constraints on the amount of ejected mass expected from a system, and where systematic uncertainties in current models prevent us from reliably extracting information from observed events. We also examine 2396 neutron star equations of state compatible with GW170817 to see whether a given ejecta mass could be reasonably produced with a neutron star of said equation of state, and whether different ejecta models provide consistent predictions. We find that the difference between models is often comparable to or larger than the error generally assumed for these models, implying better constraints on the models are needed. In conclusion, we also note that the extrapolation of outflow models outside of their calibration window, while commonly needed to analyze gravitational wave events, is extremely unreliable and occasionally leads to completely unphysical results.

Addendum: A note on spin two fields in curved backgrounds (2007 Class. Quantum Grav. 24 1683)

Abstract Some time ago, we showed that a weak (linear) massless spin two wave could only propagate on a Ricci-flat or Ricci-constant background: it must necessarily be a perturbation of general relativity. This was just the continuation of the higher spin chain: massless s = 3/2 also required Ricci-flatness (which is the basis of supergravity) while s > 2 needs Riemann flatness. This note, entitled ‘higher spin m ≠ 0 excitations on curved backgrounds and cosmological supergravity’, re-analyzes the problem in a perhaps more physical way: by considering massless and—only apparently—massive small excitations and showing how their parameters relate to the cosmological constant. We will thus prove, in a simple physical way, the necessity, as well as the sufficiency, of the known supergravity results.

Graviton topology

Over the past three decades, it has been shown that discrete and continuous media can support topologically nontrivial waves. Recently, it was shown that the same is true of the vacuum, in particular, right (R) and left (L) circularly polarized photons are topologically nontrivial. Here, we study the topology of another class of massless particles, namely gravitons. We show that the collection of all gravitons forms a topologically trivial vector bundle over the lightcone, allowing us to construct a globally smooth basis for gravitons. The graviton bundle also has a natural geometric splitting into two topologically nontrivial subbundles, consisting of the R and L gravitons. The R and L gravitons are unitary irreducible bundle representations of the Poincaré group, and are thus elementary particles; their topology is characterized by the Chern numbers ∓4. This nontrivial topology obstructs the splitting of graviton angular momentum into spin and orbital angular momentum.

Can magnetogenesis driven by dynamo instabilities in chiral fermion plasmas, favor Einstein–Cartan AdS cosmology?

In this letter we show that the magnetic field (MF) bounds induced by Einstein–Cartan–de Sitter (EC) with AdS anti-de Sitter spacetime geometry and fermionic torsion with chiral dynamo plasmas instabilities, with inhomogeneous uniform chiral chemical potential, indicates that there is a possibility, as far as magnetogenesis is concerned, that we may obtain more stringent results within ECAdS gravity, compared with general relativity (GR) limits obtained by Tsagas using torsionless magnetogenesis. Spinorial fermionic source with torsion induces a chiral plasmas oscillation. The time dependent chiral chemical potential, sometimes associated formally with torsion, (de Andrade, 2018), is obtained from chiral flipping equation. The MFs obtained from the present universe ECdS chiral dynamo model, meet the criteria of galactic seed fields with better limits within Tsagas range (Tsagas, 2015) seed galactic magnetic fields for dynamo mechanisms, than the bound obtained by chiral dynamos in torsionless AdS cosmology. Majorana neutrinos are used as spatial components of axial spin-torsion source of dynamo instability from neutrino asymmetry.

Perturbative quantum evolution of the gravitational state and dressing in general backgrounds

This paper sets up a perturbative treatment of the evolving quantum state of a gravitational system, in a Schrödinger-like picture, working about a general background. This connects gauge symmetry, the constraints, gravitational dressing, and evolution. Starting with a general time slicing, we give a simple derivation of the relation between the constraints, the Hamiltonian, and its well-known boundary term. Among different approaches to quantization with constraints, we focus on a “gauge-invariant canonical quantization,” which is developed perturbatively in the gravitational coupling. The leading-order solution of the constraints (including the Wheeler-DeWitt equation) for perturbations about the background is given in terms of an explicit construction of gravitational dressings built using certain generalized Green’s functions; different such dressings corresponding to adding propagating gravitational waves to a particular solution of the constraints. Dressed operators commute with the constraints, expressing their gauge invariance, and have an algebraic structure differing significantly from the undressed operators of the underlying field theory. These operators can act on the vacuum to create dressed states, and evolution of general such states is then generated by the boundary Hamiltonian, and alternately may be characterized using other relational observables. This provides a concrete approach to studying perturbative time evolution, including the leading gravitational backreaction, of quantum states of black holes with flat or anti–de-Sitter asymptotics, for example on horizon-crossing slices. This description of evolution in turn provides a starting point for investigating possibly important corrections to quantum evolution, that go beyond quantized general relativity. String-based axial and helicity-flip GPDs: A comparison to lattice QCD

We construct an analytic, string-based representation of the nucleon’s axial and helicity-flip conformal moments of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) that holds for skewness and for both the quark and gluon channels. The starting point is the Mellin-Barnes resummation of the conformal partial-wave expansion, where the moments are parametrized by open- (Reggeon) and closed-string (Pomeron) trajectories with slopes determined by experimental form factors and meson/glueball spectroscopy. The forward limits are fixed by the empirical unpolarized and polarized parton distributions. Polynomiality, crossing symmetry, and support are satisfied by construction. After next-to-leading order Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi/Efremov-Radyushkin-Brodsky-Lepage evolution to μ = 2 GeV our analytic framework (i) reproduces some of the currently available lattice moments of E and H˜ in the nonsinglet sector, (ii) predicts sea-quark and gluon polarized moments that will be testable by forthcoming simulations and experiments at Jefferson Lab and the future Electron-Ion Collider, and (iii) yields axial and helicity-flip GPDs in x-space in reasonable agreement with lattice QCD.

Gravitational waves and galaxies cross-correlations: a forecast on GW biases for future detectors

ABSTRACT Gravitational waves (GWs) have rapidly become important cosmological probes since their first detection in 2015. As the number of detected events continues to rise, upcoming instruments like Einstein Telescope (ET) and Cosmic Explorer (CE) will observe millions of compact binary mergers. These detections, coupled with galaxy surveys by instruments such as the Dark Spectroscopic Energy Instrument (DESI), Euclid, and the Vera Rubin Observatory, will provide unique information on the large-scale structure of the universe by cross-correlating GWs with the distribution of galaxies hosting them. In this paper, we focus on how cross-correlations constrain the clustering bias of GWs emitted by the coalescence of binary black holes (BBHs). This parameter links BBHs to the underlying dark matter distribution, hence informing us how they populate galaxies. Using a multitracer approach, we forecast the precision of these measurements under different survey combinations. Our results indicate that current GW detectors will have limited precision, with measurement errors as high as $\displaystyle \sim 50~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. However, third-generation detectors like ET, when cross-correlated with Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) data, can improve clustering bias measurements to within 2.5 per cent. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these cross-correlations can enable a per cent-level measurement of the magnification lensing effect on GWs. Despite this, there is a degeneracy between magnification and evolution biases, which hinders the precision of both. This degeneracy is most effectively addressed by assuming knowledge of one bias or targeting an optimal redshift range of $\displaystyle 1 \lt z \lt 2.5$. Our analysis opens new avenues for studying the distribution of BBHs and testing the nature of gravity through large-scale structure.

A modified cosmic brane proposal for holographic Renyi entropy

We propose a new formula for computing holographic Renyi entropies in the presence of multiple extremal surfaces. Our proposal is based on computing the wave function in the basis of fixed-area states and assuming a diagonal approximation for the Renyi entropy. For Renyi index n ≥ 1, our proposal agrees with the existing cosmic brane proposal for holographic Renyi entropy. For n < 1, however, our proposal predicts a new phase with leading order (in Newton’s constant G) corrections to the cosmic brane proposal, even far from entanglement phase transitions and when bulk quantum corrections are unimportant. Recast in terms of optimization over fixed-area states, the difference between the two proposals can be understood to come from the order of optimization: for n < 1, the cosmic brane proposal is a minimax prescription whereas our proposal is a maximin prescription. We demonstrate the presence of such leading order corrections using illustrative examples. In particular, our proposal reproduces existing results in the literature for the PSSY model and high-energy eigenstates, providing a universal explanation for previously found leading order corrections to the n < 1 Renyi entropies.
