Commissioning of Dedicated Furnace for Nb3Sn Coatings of 2.6 GHz Single Cell Cavities

We present the results of commissioning a dedicated furnace for Nb3Sn coatings of 2.6 GHz single cell cavities. Nb3Sn is a desired coating due to its high critical temperature and smaller surface resistance compared to bulk Nb. Usage of Nb3Sn coated cavities will greatly reduce operating costs due to decreased dependance on cryo cooling. Tin is deposited by use of a tin chloride nucleation agent and tin vapor diffusion. Analysis of the resultant coating was performed using SEM/EDS to verify successful formation of Nb3Sn. Witness samples in line of sight of the source were used in order to understand the coating efficacy.

Monolithic gas trap adsorber for high efficiency, cost effective, low-emission condensing furnace

An improved method and system for treating flue gases from a natural gas furnace are provided. The method and system include an acidic gas trap (AGT) adsorber which enables the continuous adsorption and storage of SOx, NOx redox, and formic acid/CO/HC/CH 4 oxidation, with a negligible pressure drop. The AGT adsorber includes a catalyst coating having a nanotube structure (e.g., a uniform nanostructure forest coating) or a uniform porous nanostructure of various low-cost oxides through scalable low temperature solution processes, including oxides of Ti, Cu, Ba, Mn, Zr, Zn, Sr, Ca, Li, K, Na, Al, or Ce.

The Effect of APS-HVOF Bond Coating Thickness Ratio on TBC Furnace Cycle Lifetime

In this work, combinations of NiCoCrAlY APS and high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) bond coatings were deposited on alloy 247 disk substrates with APS yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) top coatings to assess the benefit of air plasma sprayed (APS) ‘flash’ bond coatings. Using 1-h cycles at 1100 °C in air with 10% H 2 O and HVOF-only and APS-only bond coatings as a baseline, it was found that APS flash coatings extended the average coating lifetime by 16% to 35% with the thicker flash coating performing best. Principal component analysis and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) compositional mapping on coatings characterized after 0, 100, 300 and 500 cycles and after failure showed that the Al in the bond coatings was depleted due to both oxidation and back diffusion into the substrate. The APS-only bond coating had significant oxidation throughout the bond coating and was so depleted in Al, that Al diffused from the substrate to the coating. Residual stress maps of the thermally-grown alumina scale were obtained every 100 cycles using photo-stimulated luminescence piezospectroscopy (PLPS) revealing that the Thick Flash coating had the slowest rate of damage accumulation in the oxide scale.

Accelerated carbonation and structural transformation of blast furnace slag by mechanochemical alkali-activation

Alternative cements and production routes are necessary to offset the considerable global CO 2 emissions of Portland cement production. The combination of alkali-activation and mechanochemical milling in a CO 2 rich atmosphere is a promising green direction for synthesizing cementitious material as it upcycles hazardous material (slag) while capturing wt% of CO 2 during synthesis. We investigate the resulting structural transformations incurred during synthesis and hydration using a suite of characterization techniques including solid-state 27 Al, 29 Si, and 13 C NMR. The local aluminosilicate network structure of the processed clinker is best described by a melilite-type structure. Upon hydration, the network polymerizes to form a calcium, sodium aluminosilicate hydrate gel. The synthesis route also creates various metastable carbonates and bicarbonates from captured CO 2 and alkali-additives that transform into stable carbonate phases like calcite, aragonite, and gaylussite, after hydration. These findings indicate accelerated carbonation reactions occur during clinker production and demonstrates novelty as a green cement technology.

VTR Casting Furnace Conceptual Design

This TEV describes the development of a conceptual design for a fuel casting system to be used in the development and demonstration of fuel designs for the new Versatile Test Reactor (VTR). This system will be installed in the Fuel Manufacturing Facility (FMF). The system will be in a shielded glovebox and will be used to melt fuel materials and injection cast these materials into fuel slugs, which will further be used to fabricate fuel elements for the VTR. This TEV covers only the injection casting system itself. Operations such as removing the castings from the injection molds, trimming of the castings, and installation of the castings into fuel element cladding are beyond the scope of the TEV. The conceptual design herein is principally concerned with the mechanical portion of the casting system and does not include details of the control or power supply systems.

Cast Alumina-Forming Austenitic Stainless Steels for High Temperature Heat Treatment Furnace Rolls

Alloy developers worldwide have struggled to create creep-resistant alumina-forming, iron-based austenitic stainless steels for use as high-temperature structural alloys, but with limited success in balancing alloy cost, oxidation, and creep resistance. Here, this article describes the research and development of a novel cast alumina-forming austenitic stainless steel. This work won the prestigious Engineering Materials Achievement Award presented at IMAT 2023 in Detroit.

Effect of Air Plasma Sprayed Flash Bond Coatings on Furnace Cycle Lifetime of Disks and Rods

Air plasma sprayed (APS) flash coatings on high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) bond coatings are well known to extend the lifetime of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). Recent work compared flash coatings of NiCoCrAlY and NiCoCrAlYHfSi applied to both rods and disk substrates of alloy 247. For rod specimens, 100 h cycles were used at 1100 °C in wet air. Both flash coatings significantly improved the lifetime compared to HVOF-only and vacuum plasma spray (VPS)-only MCrAlY bond coatings with no statistical difference between the two flash coatings. For disk specimens tested in 1 h cycles at 1100 °C in wet air, the NiCoCrAlY flash coating significantly outperformed an HVOF-only NiCoCrAlYHfSi bond coating and a NiCoCrAlYHfSi flash coating. The flash coatings formed a mixed oxide-metal zone that appeared to inhibit crack formation and therefore extend lifetime. In addition to the flash coating increasing the bond coating roughness, the underlying HVOF layer acted as a source of Al for this intermixed zone and prevented the oxide from penetrating deeper into the bond coating. Here, the lower Y+Hf content in the Y-only flash coating appeared to minimize oxidation in the flash layer, thereby increasing the benefit compared to a NiCoCrAlYHfSi flash coating.

HEAF Cable Fragility Testing at the Solar Furnace at the NSTTF

In order to establish a zone of influence (ZOI) due to a high energy arcing fault (HEAF) environment, the fragility of the targets must be determined. The high heat flux/short duration exposure of a HEAF is considerably different than that of a traditional hydrocarbon fire, which previous research has addressed. The previous failure metrics (e.g., internal jacket temperature of a cable exposed to a fire) were based on low heat flux/long duration exposures. Because of this, evaluation of different physics and failure modes was considered to evaluate the fragility of cables exposed to a HEAF. Tests on cable targets were performed at high heat flux/short duration exposures to gain insight on the relevant physics and failure modes. These tests yielded data on several relevant failure modes, including electrical failure and sustained ignition. Additionally, the results indicated a relationship between the total energy of exposure and the damage state of the cable target. This data can be used to inform the fragility of the targets.
