The optimization of convergence for Chebyshev polynomial methods in an unbounded domain

Grosch and Orszag (1977) have performed a numerical analysis of the problem of solving differential equations in a semiinfinite or infinite domain using Chebyshev polynomials. The principal limitation of the conducted study was that it was entirely empirical. Various differential equations were solved in different ways and the numbers were compared. The present investigation has the objective to extend the studies conducted by Grosch and Orszag by deriving asymptotic approximations to the Chebyshev coefficients of simple model functions. This approach makes it possible to conduct more systematic comparisons of different methods, extend the range of comparisons, and, perhaps most important, give simple analytic formulas for choosing the optimum domain size or mapping parameter L for various situations.

Microwave scatterometer measurements of oceanic wind vector

Results from Seasat-A scatterometer (SASS) remote sensing of oceanic wind vectors are reviewed, together with the theory of radar backscattering. The SASS was designed to measure the surface wind stress and neutral stability wind vector at 19.5 m altitude. Requirements included windspeeds from 4-24 m/sec to within 2 m/sec or 10%, a 1000 km swath, directions from 0-360 deg to within 20 deg, a 50 km resolution cell, and cross-track and along-track spacing between resolution cells of 100 km. The method was based on Bragg scattering of microwaves from cm-length capillary ocean waves. The strength of the backscatter is proportional to the capillary wave amplitude, which is in equilibrium with the ocean surface wind speed. The measurement grouping, least-squares estimator, and dB deviation model function table for the SASS geophysical algorithm are discussed. Comparisons of SASS, GOASEX, and ground truth wind data are made, and a 0.92 correlation between SASS and ground truth data is determined from regression analysis.

A lightweight electronically commutated dc motor for electric passenger vehicles

A functional model breadboard converter and a rare-earth-cobalt, permanent magnet motor; as well as an engineering model converter and PM motor suitable for vehicle installations were developed and tested. The converter and motor achieved an 88% peak efficiency, a maximum output of 26 kW at 26,000 rpm, and a continuous rating of 15 kW. The system also generated power to the source during braking, with a demonstrated peak power available at the converter terminals of approximately 26 kW at 88% efficiency. Major conclusions include: (1) the SAE J227a(D) driving cycle efficiency for the converter/motor is 86% to 88% when energy available for recovery at the converter terminals is included; (2) the converter initial cost is approximately five times that of the permanent magnet motor, but can be reduced by means of LSI logic and integrated liquid cooled semiconductor packages; and (3) an electronically commutated motor with a liquid cooled converter will operate reliably without service or maintenance for the life of a passenger vehicle.

Advanced axial field D.C. motor development for electric passenger vehicle

A wound-field axial-flux dc motor was developed for an electric vehicle drive system. The motor is essentially an axial-flux version of the classical Gramme-ring winding motor, but the active conductors are recessed into slots cut into the two opposite faces of the laminated tape-wound core ring. Three motors were built and tested in the program. The second (functional) model was a six-pole machine which weighed 88.5 kg. It developed 16.9 km (33.0 hp), and a max speed of 4800 rpm. Full load efficiency was 92% and predicted SAE D-cycle efficiency was 88%. The last engineering) model was a 4-pole machine with compoles, allowing a weight reduction to 45 kg (100 lbs.) while addressing some manufacturability problems. The engineering model was rated at 13.2 kw (17.6 hp) at 3000 rpm, with a peak power of 19.8 km (26.4 hp) and a max speed of 7200 rpm. Initial test results on this motor showed poor commutation and efficiency; the program was terminated without resolution of these problems.

Effect of Ion Sputtering on Interface Chemistry and Electrical Properties of an Gaas (100) Schottky Contacts

Auger and electron photoelectron spectroscopy were used to measure the extent of As depletion during 1 keV to 5 keV argon sputtering of GaAs surfaces. This depletion was correlated with a general decrease in the barrier height of the rectifying Au contact deposited in situ. However, nondestructive angle resolved XPS measurements showed As was depleted at the outer surface more by 1 keV than 3 keV argon. These effects are explained based on a combined work effective work function model and creation of a donor like surface damage layer. The donor layer was correlated with As depletion by sputtering. Deep level trap formation and annealing of sputtering effects were studied.

New algorithms for microwave measurements of ocean winds

Improved second generation wind algorithms are used to process the three month SEASAT SMMR and SASS data sets. The new algorithms are derived without using in situ anemometer measurements. All known biases in the sensors prime measurements are removed, and the algorithms prime model functions are internally self-consistent. The computed SMMR and SASS winds are collocated and compared on a 150 km cell-by-cell basis, giving a total of 115444 wind comparisons. The comparisons are done using three different sets of SMMR channels. When the 6.6H SMMR channel is used for wind retrieval, the SMMR and SASS winds agree to within 1.3 m/s over the SASS primary swath. At nadir where the radar cross section is less sensitive to wind, the agreement degrades to 1.9 m/s. The agreement is very good for winds from 0 to 15 m/s. Above 15 m/s, the off-nadir SASS winds are consistently lower than the SMMR winds, while at nadir the high SASS winds are greater than SMMR's. When 10.7H is used for the SMMR wind channel, the SMMR/SASS wind comparisons are not quite as good. When the frequency of the wind channel is increased to 18 GHz, the SMMR/SASS agreement substantially degrades to about 5 m/s.

Frequency-domain identification of XV-15 tilt-rotor aircraft dynamics

Frequency-domain methods are used to identify the open-loop dynamics of the XV-15 tilt-rotor aircraft from flight tests. Piloting and data analysis techniques are presented to determine frequency response plots and equivalent transfer function models. The open-loop pitch and roll dynamics for the hover flight condition exhibit unstable low-frequency oscillations, whereas the dynamics in the remaining degrees of freedom are lightly damped and generally decoupled. Comparisons of SV-13 flight-test and simulator data are more favorable for high-frequency inputs (omega greater than 1.0 rad/sec) than low-frequency inputs. The identification of symmetric and asymmetric beam-bending modes compares favorably with previous flight-test data. The results presented in this paper demonstrate the utility of the frequency-domain techniques for dynamics identification and simulator fidelity studies.

Effect of ion sputtering on interface chemistry and electrical properties of Au GaAs(100) Schottky contacts

The effects of sputtering n-type (100)GaAs with 1 to 5 keV argon ions have been studied in ultrahigh vacuum. Auger electron and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies have been used to characterize the surface before and after sputtering. Gold Schottky contacts were prepared in situ to avoid contamination at the metal/semiconductor interface. The data show that sputtering depletes the surface in As, and the extent of depletion increased as the ion energy was increased. However, angular-resolved photoelectron data showed As was enriched on the outer atom layer by 5 keV but depleted by 1 keV Ar(+) sputtering. Current and capacitance versus voltage data showed that sputtering always lowered the Schottky barrier height and generally increased the ideality factor. However, the barrier height after 3 keV sputtering was higher than after 1 keV sputtering. Those effects are explained based on a combined effective work function model and creation of a donorlike surface damage layer. The donor layer was correlated with As depletion by sputtering. Deep level trap formation and annealing of sputtering effects were studied.

Highlights of the SEASAT-SASS program - A review

Some important concepts of the SEASAT-SASS program are described and some of the decisions made during the program as to methods for relating wind to backscatter are discussed. The radar scatterometer design is analyzed along with the model function, which is an empirical relationship between the backscatter value and the wind speed, wind direction, and incidence angle of the radar beam with the sea surface. The results of Monte Carlo studies of mesoscale turbulence and of studies of wind stress on the sea surface involving SASS are reviewed.

Spectroscopic CCD surveys for quasars at large redshift. I - A deep PFUEI survey

A survey for faint quasars has been conducted using slitless spectroscopy with the PFUEI at the 200 inch (5 m) telescope. The survey covers a total of 0.91 sq deg in 113 fields at galactic latitudes above 30 deg. Calibrated spectra in the range 4500-7200 A were obtained for more than 9000 objects. Emission-line candidates were selected on the basis of two criteria: the equivalent width must exceed 50 A, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the detection of the line versus the sky background should be larger than 7. Among 45 candidates so selected, subsequent slit spectroscopy confirmed 27 emission-line objects. Among these, 17 are emission-line galaxies with redshifts in the range 0.04-0.31, and 10 are quasars with redshifts between 0.91 and 2.66. The well-defined selection criteria for these objects, together with the distribution of rest frame equivalent widths of the emission lines, allow derivation of the area of sky covered as a function of the continuum limiting magnitude. The observed number of quasars in the redshift range 0.7-2.7 agrees well with that predicted by the luminosity function models published by Schmidt and Green in 1983. It is concluded that quasars with an absolute magnitude of M(B) = -25 suffer a redshift cutoff near or below a redshift of 3.

Structural analysis demonstration of constitutive and life models

The overall objective of this program is to demonstrate the applicability of NASA-developed advanced constitutive and life damage models for calculating cyclic structural response and crack initiation in selected components of reusable space propulsion systems. The computer model resulting from this program will enable the user to produce an accurate life prediction of hot gas path, life limiting components of propulsion systems such as the space shuttle main engine (SSME). Previously developed computer models addressing constitutive modeling and life damage will be combined in an advanced finite element analysis to generate a sophisticated baseline life prediction program. A material data base will be established for the constitutive and life models parametrically involving temperature, strain range, strain rate, mean strain/stress, and dwell time. The verified computer program will be used to accomplish the life predictions of three SSME critical components as evidence of the model functionality.

Demonstration of frequency-sweep testing technique using a Bell 214-ST helicopter

A demonstration of frequency-sweep testing using a Bell-214ST single-rotor helicopter was completed in support of the Army's development of an updated MIL-H-8501A, and an LHX (ADS-33) handling-qualities specification. Hover and level-flight (V sub a = 0 knots and V sub a = 90 knots) tests were conducted in 3 flight hours by Army test pilots at the Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity (AEFA) at Edwards AFB, Calif. Bandwidth and phase-delay parameters were determined from the flight-extracted frequency responses as required by the proposed specifications. Transfer function modeling and verification demonstrates the validity of the frequency-response concept for characterizing closed-loop flight dynamics of single-rotor helicopters -- even in hover. This report documents the frequency-sweep flight-testing technique and data-analysis procedures. Special emphasis is given to piloting and analysis considerations which are important for demonstrating frequency-domain specification compliance.

Spectroscopic CCD surveys for quasars at large redshift. II - A Pfuei transit survey

A CCD transit survey has been carried out with the 200 in. telescope of a strip of sky 5 arcmin wide and 9 hr long. Direct images and slitless spectra of over 43,000 objects were obtained on two successive nights. An automatic search for emission lines of given minimum equivalent width and signal-to-noise ratio yielded 52 candidate sources. Slit spectra revealed that 24 were emission-line galaxies with z less than 0.4 and eight were quasars with 2 between 1.00 and 2.76. The number of quasars detect agrees with that predicted from luminosity function models for z less than 2.9. The models also indicate that between 30 and 62 quasars with z less than 2.9 should have been found in this survey, but none were detected. This result reconfirms that there is a redshift cutoff near or below redshift three. The apparent conflict of this measurement with the known existence of dozens of quasars with redshifts larger than three is discussed.
