Initial Demonstration of New Griffin Capability for Simulating the Running-In Phase of Pebble-Bed Reactors with Multiphysics

Griffin, a MOOSE (Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment) based application targeting transient modelling of advanced reactors, has been used recently to model pebble-bed reactors (PBRs). The modelling effort has focused thus far on modelling the equilibrium core. A new capability to simulate the running-in phase of PBR operation has been added to Griffin. This work demonstrates the newcapability with a sample multiphysics running-in simulation. The basic features of the new running-in capability were documented previously; however, the sample simulation results presented there did not include multiphysics; the fuel temperatures were assumed to be constant. In this work, Griffin computes power densities in the core at each timestep of the running-in simulation and passes these to Pronghorn which models fluid flow and heat transfer to calculate temperatures that are passed back to Griffin and accounted for with temperature dependent cross-sections.

Revisiting spontaneous Raman scattering for direct oxygen atom quantification

In this paper, the counterintuitive and largely unknown Raman activity of oxygen atoms is evaluated for its capacity to determine absolute densities in gases with significant O-density. The study involves C O 2 microwave plasma to generate a self-calibrating mixture and establish accurate cross sections for the 3 P 2 ↔<!-- ↔ --> 3 P 1 and 3 P 2 ↔<!-- ↔ --> 3 P 0 transitions. The approach requires conservation of stoichiometry, confirmed within experimental uncertainty by a 1D fluid model. The measurements yield σ<!-- σ --> J = 2 →<!-- → --> 1 = 5.27 ±<!-- ± --> s y s : 0.53 r a n d : 0.17 ×<!-- × --> 10 -<!-- - --> 31 c m 2 / s r and σ<!-- σ --> J = 2 →<!-- → --> 0 = 2.11 ±<!-- ± --> s y s : 0.21 r a n d : 0.06 ×<!-- × --> 10 -<!-- - --> 31 c m 2 / s r , and the detection limit is estimated to be 1 ×<!-- × --> 10 15 c m -<!-- - --> 3 for systems without other scattering species.

Nonlinearities in Magnetic Confinement, Ionospheric Physics, and Population Explosion Leading to Profile Resilience Нелінійності в магнетному утриманні, фізиці іоносфери та процесі демографічного вибуху, які приводять до стійкості профілю

Nonlinearities play an important role in many fields. In the field of thermonuclear fusion, they are involved in questions such as profile resilience and fluid closure. A nonlinear phenomenon common to both fusion and astrophysical planets is the generation of zonal flows. These flows play a significant role in determining the level of turbulence and fluid closure in fusion. The effects of resonance broadening and nonlinearities are investigated, specifically focusing on the case of nonlinear instability that has appeared in drift waves. Similarities and differences between our systems are discussed, with population explosion and the dynamics of nonlinear systems for drift waves by different states in profile resilience described with great precision. The aim of our study is to put our fluid model for drift waves in tokamaks within the wider framework of statistical physics principles. This reinforces our belief in the broad application of our drift wave model, which encompasses current tokamaks, ITER, and the fusion pilot plant.

Vidyut3d: A Gpu Accelerated Fluid Solver for Non-Equilibrium Plasmas on Adaptive Grids

We present the numerical methods, programming methodology, verification, and performance assessment of a non-equilibrium plasma fluid solver that can effectively utilize current and upcoming central processing and graphics processing unit (CPU+GPU) architectures, in this work. Our plasma fluid model solves the coupled conservation equations for species transport, electrostatic Poisson and electron temperature on adaptive Cartesian grids. Our solver is written using performance portable adaptive-grid/particle management library, AMReX, and is portable over widely available vendor specific GPU architectures. We present verification of our solver using method of manufactured solutions that indicate formal second order accuracy with central diffusion and fifth-order weighted-essentially-non-oscillatory (WENO) advection scheme. We also verify our solver with published literature on capacitive discharges and atmospheric pressure streamer propagation. We demonstrate the use of our solver on two 3D simulation cases: an atmospheric streamer propagation in Ar-H2 mixtures and a low pressure twin electrode radio frequency reactor. Our performance studies on three different CPU+GPU architectures indicate approximately 150-400X speed-up using AMD and NVIDIA GPUs per time step compared to a single CPU core for a 4 million cell simulation with 15 species.

SIERRA/Aero User Manual - Version 4.56

SIERRA/Aero is a compressible fluid dynamics program intended to solve a wide variety compressible fluid flows including transonic and hypersonic problems. This document describes the commands for assembling a fluid model for analysis with this module, henceforth referred to simply as Aero for brevity. Aero is an application developed using the SIERRA Toolkit (STK). The intent of STK is to provide a set of tools for handling common tasks that programmers encounter when developing a code for numerical simulation. For example, components of STK provide field allocation and management, and parallel input/output of field and mesh data. These services also allow the development of coupled mechanics analysis software for a massively parallel computing environment.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis of a 12 MW Circulating Fluidized Bed Rise

A three-dimensional (3D) two fluid model (TFM) model of the 12 MW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) riser at Chalmers University was developed using the open-source Multiphase Flow with Interphase eXchanges (MFiX) Software Suite. The hydrodynamic behavior of the riser was validated by comparing axial pressure profiles from experimental measurements with the results from the simulations. Under some of the operating conditions where there was no external circulation of solids, the pressure profiles from the simulation matched well with the experimental measurements. For the cases where there was external circulation of solids, the pressure profiles with the monodisperse solid phase modeling underpredicted the solids concentration in the freeboard region. With the inclusion of polydispersity in the model, the predicted pressure profiles agreed well with the experimental measurements. A two-dimensional (2D) model of the riser was used to perform simulations of coal combustion. The predicted flue gas outlet compositions of oxygen and carbon dioxide compared reasonably to experiments. The experiments also reported some concentration of carbon monoxide which was overpredicted in the simulations. Additional experimental data such as axial oxygen concentration profile and pressure profiles were also compared with the experiment. It was observed that the oxygen concentration in the bottom bed from the simulations was higher than in the experiments, which suggested that most of the oxidation reactions occurred in the bottom bed. The concentration of volatiles and char in the simulations was lower in the bottom bed than in the experiments, which suggest that there is not sufficient penetration of the solid phase species into the bed.
