Toward the application of the Kalman filter to regional open ocean modeling

A partial differential equation model is defined for ocean meteorological prediction and synoptic analysis. The Kalman filter used for data assimilation is described and applied to the one-dimensional linear barotropic quasi-geostrophic model with periodic and open boundary conditions. The model accounts for eddy scale dynamics in the ocean. The assumptions made in the forecast model are discussed, along with comparisons of the error variances expected with the filter and from an objective analysis method. The effectiveness of the Kalman filter is demonstrated and subsequent efforts to extend the filter to two dimensions are indicated.

Alkali metal for ultraviolet band-pass filter

An alkali metal filter having a layer of metallic bismuth deposited onto the alkali metal is provided. The metallic bismuth acts to stabilize the surface of the alkali metal to prevent substantial surface migration from occurring on the alkali metal, which may degrade optical characteristics of the filter. To this end, a layer of metallic bismuth is deposited by vapor deposition over the alkali metal to a depth of approximately 5 to 10 A. A complete alkali metal filter is described along with a method for fabricating the alkali metal filter.

An intercomparison of aircraft instrumentation for tropospheric measurements of sulfur dioxide

As part of the NASA Tropospheric Chemistry Program, a series of field intercomparisons have been conducted to evaluate the state-of-the art for measuring key tropospheric species. One of the objectives of the third intercomparison campaign in this series, Chemical Instrumentation Test and Evaluation 3 (CITE 3), was to evaluate instrumentation for making reliable tropospheric aircraft measurements of sulfur dioxide, dimethyl sulfide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon disulfide, and carbonyl sulfide. This paper reports the results of the intercomparisons of five sulfur dioxide measurement methods ranging from filter techniques, in which samples collected in flight are returned to the laboratory for analyses (chemiluminescent or ion chromatographic), to near real-time, in-flight measurements via gas chromatographic, mass spectrometric, and chemiluminescent techniques. All techniques showed some tendency to track sizeable changes in ambient SO2 such as those associated with altitude changes. For SO2 mixing ratios in the range of 200 pptv to a few ppbv, agreement among the techniques varies from about 30% to several orders of magnitude, depending upon the pair of measurements intercompared. For SO2 mixing ratios less than 200 pptv, measurements from the techniques are uncorrelated. In general, observed differences in the measurement of standards do not account for the flight results. The CITE 3 results do not unambiguously identify one or more of the measurement techniques as providing valid or invalid SO2 measurements, but identify the range of 'potential' uncertainty in SO2 measurements reported by currently available instrumentation and as measured under realistic aircraft environments.

A Priori Subgrid Analysis of Temporal Mixing Layers with Evaporating Droplets

Subgrid analysis of a transitional temporal mixing layer with evaporating droplets has been performed using three sets of results from a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) database, with Reynolds numbers (based on initial vorticity thickness) as large as 600 and with droplet mass loadings as large as 0.5. In the DNS, the gas phase is computed using a Eulerian formulation, with Lagrangian droplet tracking. The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) equations corresponding to the DNS are first derived, and key assumptions in deriving them are first confirmed by computing the terms using the DNS database. Since LES of this flow requires the computation of unfiltered gas-phase variables at droplet locations from filtered gas-phase variables at the grid points, it is proposed to model these by assuming the gas-phase variables to be the sum of the filtered variables and a correction based on the filtered standard deviation; this correction is then computed from the Subgrid Scale (SGS) standard deviation. This model predicts the unfiltered variables at droplet locations considerably better than simply interpolating the filtered variables. Three methods are investigated for modeling the SGS standard deviation: the Smagorinsky approach, the Gradient model and the Scale-Similarity formulation. When the proportionality constant inherent in the SGS models is properly calculated, the Gradient and Scale-Similarity methods give results in excellent agreement with the DNS.

A Priori Subgrid Scale Modeling for a Droplet Laden Temporal Mixing Layer

Subgrid analysis of a transitional temporal mixing layer with evaporating droplets has been performed using a direct numerical simulation (DNS) database. The DNS is for a Reynolds number (based on initial vorticity thickness) of 600, with droplet mass loading of 0.2. The gas phase is computed using a Eulerian formulation, with Lagrangian droplet tracking. Since Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of this flow requires the computation of unfiltered gas-phase variables at droplet locations from filtered gas-phase variables at the grid points, it is proposed to model these by assuming the gas-phase variables to be given by the filtered variables plus a correction based on the filtered standard deviation, which can be computed from the sub-grid scale (SGS) standard deviation. This model predicts unfiltered variables at droplet locations better than simply interpolating the filtered variables. Three methods are investigated for modeling the SGS standard deviation: Smagorinsky, gradient and scale-similarity. When properly calibrated, the gradient and scale-similarity methods give results in excellent agreement with the DNS.

Programmable noise bandwidth reduction by means of digital averaging

Predetection noise bandwidth reduction is effected by a pre-averager capable of digitally averaging the samples of an input data signal over two or more symbols, the averaging interval being defined by the input sampling rate divided by the output sampling rate. As the averaged sample is clocked to a suitable detector at a much slower rate than the input signal sampling rate the noise bandwidth at the input to the detector is reduced, the input to the detector having an improved signal to noise ratio as a result of the averaging process, and the rate at which such subsequent processing must operate is correspondingly reduced. The pre-averager forms a data filter having an output sampling rate of one sample per symbol of received data. More specifically, selected ones of a plurality of samples accumulated over two or more symbol intervals are output in response to clock signals at a rate of one sample per symbol interval. The pre-averager includes circuitry for weighting digitized signal samples using stored finite impulse response (FIR) filter coefficients. A method according to the present invention is also disclosed.

Continued Monitoring of Landsat Reflective Band Calibration Using Pseudo-Invariant Calibration Sites

Though both of the current Landsat instruments, Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper+ (ETM+) and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM), include on-board calibration systems, since 2001, pseudo-invariant calibration sites (PICS) have been added to the suite of metrics to assess the instruments calibration. These sites do not provide absolute calibration data since there are no ground measurements of the sites, but in monitoring these PICS over time, the relative calibration can be tracked. The sites used by the Landsat instruments are primarily in the Saharan Desert. To date, the trending from the PICS sites has confirmed that most of the degradation seen in the ETM+ on-board calibration systems is likely not degradation of the instrument, but rather degradation of the calibration systems themselves. However, the PICS data show statistically significant degradation (at 2-sigma) in all the reflective spectral bands of up to -0.22%/year since July 2003. For the TM, the PICS were instrumental in updating the calibration in 2007 and now suggest two bands may require another update. The data show a statistically significant degradation (at 2-sigma) in Bands 1 and 3 of -0.27 and -0.15%/year, respectively, since March 1999. The data filtering and processing methods are currently being reviewed but these PICS results may lead to an update in the reflective band calibration of both Landsat-7 and Landsat-5.

Towards A Model-Based Prognostics Methodology for Electrolytic Capacitors: A Case Study Based on Electrical Overstress Accelerated Aging

A remaining useful life prediction methodology for electrolytic capacitors is presented. This methodology is based on the Kalman filter framework and an empirical degradation model. Electrolytic capacitors are used in several applications ranging from power supplies on critical avionics equipment to power drivers for electro-mechanical actuators. These devices are known for their comparatively low reliability and given their criticality in electronics subsystems they are a good candidate for component level prognostics and health management. Prognostics provides a way to assess remaining useful life of a capacitor based on its current state of health and its anticipated future usage and operational conditions. We present here also, experimental results of an accelerated aging test under electrical stresses. The data obtained in this test form the basis for a remaining life prediction algorithm where a model of the degradation process is suggested. This preliminary remaining life prediction algorithm serves as a demonstration of how prognostics methodologies could be used for electrolytic capacitors. In addition, the use degradation progression data from accelerated aging, provides an avenue for validation of applications of the Kalman filter based prognostics methods typically used for remaining useful life predictions in other applications.

Adaptive Orbit Determination for Interplanetary Spacecraft

The interplanetary orbit problem has been traditionally solved using least-squares techniques. Due to operational limitations of this method, a Kalman filter approach has been proposed for future missions which includes all spacecraft and measurement modeling states in the filter.

Simplification of the Kalman filter for meteorological data assimilation

The paper proposes a new statistical method of data assimilation that is based on a simplification of the Kalman filter equations. The forecast error covariance evolution is approximated simply by advecting the mass-error covariance field, deriving the remaining covariances geostrophically, and accounting for external model-error forcing only at the end of each forecast cycle. This greatly reduces the cost of computation of the forecast error covariance. In simulations with a linear, one-dimensional shallow-water model and data generated artificially, the performance of the simplified filter is compared with that of the Kalman filter and the optimal interpolation (OI) method. The simplified filter produces analyses that are nearly optimal, and represents a significant improvement over OI.

An Integrated Approach for Gear Health Prognostics

In this paper, an integrated approach for gear health prognostics using particle filters is presented. The presented method effectively addresses the issues in applying particle filters to gear health prognostics by integrating several new components into a particle filter: (1) data mining based techniques to effectively define the degradation state transition and measurement functions using a one-dimensional health index obtained by whitening transform; (2) an unbiased l-step ahead RUL estimator updated with measurement errors. The feasibility of the presented prognostics method is validated using data from a spiral bevel gear case study.

Evaluation of Inflow Turbulence Methods in Large-Eddy Simulations of a Supersonic Boundary Layer

In the context of Large- Eddy Simulations (LES), Boundary-layer inflow turbulence is simulated using both the Synthetic Eddy Model (SEM) and Digital Filtering (DF). The effects of the projection error are investigated. The effect of the prescribed length scales on the adjustment region was found to be negligible for length scales less than one-tenth of the boundary-layer thickness. While it was conjectured that one method of the two might be more robust than the other, our results show that both the Digital Filtering Method and the Synthetic Eddy Method accurately replicate the boundary layer while successfully accounting for inflow turbulence.

MAGSAT and aeromagnetic data of the continental US

The MAGSAT data were used to produce a scalar anomaly map of the U.S. In order to remove the east-west striping anomalies, which are believed to be caused by the low-order polynomials used to reduce the orbital bias errors, a 2-D spectral filtering using the Fourier transform method was applied. The resultant low-pass filtered map, with the east-west stripings removed, resembles much closer the surface aeromagnetic map based on the U.S. MAGNET data. The spectral filtering was also applied to the MAGSAT vector data. Department of Defense gravity data was processed to produce a filtered U.S. gravity map whose spectral contents are comparable to those of the MAGSAT magnetic map.

Microencapsulation and Electrostatic Processing Method

Methods are provided for forming spherical multilamellar microcapsules having alternating hydrophilic and hydrophobic liquid layers, surrounded by flexible, semi-permeable hydrophobic or hydrophilic outer membranes which can be tailored specifically to control the diffusion rate. The methods of the invention rely on low shear mixing and liquid-liquid diffusion process and are particularly well suited for forming microcapsules containing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs. These methods can be carried out in the absence of gravity and do not rely on density-driven phase separation, mechanical mixing or solvent evaporation phases. The methods include the process of forming, washing and filtering microcapsules. In addition, the methods contemplate coating microcapsules with ancillary coatings using an electrostatic field and free fluid electrophoresis of the microcapsules. The microcapsules produced by such methods are particularly useful in the delivery of pharmaceutical compositions.

Near optimum delay-line detection filters for serial detection of MSK signals

A method for designing transversal delay-line filter approximations to the matched filter for the serial detection of minimum-shift keyed (MSK) modulated signals is given. Two configurations are characterized in terms of signal-to-noise ratio degradation at a bit error rate (BER) of 10 to the -6th. One is shown to depart less than 0.3 dB from the ideal matched filter performance when its parameter values are optimized. A lumped-element equivalent is also given and shown to provide a degradation of less than 0.4 dB at a BER of 10 to the -6th

Further studies using matched filter theory and stochastic simulation for gust loads prediction

This paper describes two analysis methods - one deterministic, the other stochastic - for computing maximized and time-correlated gust loads for aircraft with nonlinear control systems. The first method is based on matched filter theory; the second is based on stochastic simulation. The paper summarizes the methods, discusses the selection of gust intensity for each method and presents numerical results. A strong similarity between the results from the two methods is seen to exist for both linear and nonlinear configurations.
