A Novel Low-Profile High-Efficiency Three-Phase Matrix Transformer

High step-down isolated DC-DC conversion from an 800 V DC bus to low-voltage, high-current outputs is required in automotive auxiliary converters and data center power supplies. In such applications, conventional transformer-based converters require large turns ratios, which increase winding resistance, leakage inductance, and magnetic height. This paper proposes a novel low-profile three-phase matrix transformer that realizes a large effective voltage ratio through flux division among multiple secondary legs, without increasing the physical turns count of each winding. As a result, the proposed structure reduces copper usage and transformer height while preserving the voltage conversion capability of a conventional three-phase transformer. Finite element analysis shows that the proposed design reduces magnetic height by 27%, ferrite volume by 34%, and copper volume by 28%. Circuit-level simulations of an 800 V/12 V,3 kW CLLLC dual-active-bridge converter further show that the lower winding resistance reduces total system loss by 91% and increases DC-DC efficiency from 82.6% to 97.6% at 3 kW output.

Some Experiments on the Passage of High-Energy Protons in Dense Matter

A series of experiments designed to study the nuclear cascade resulting from the passage of 1 to 3 GeV protons in matter has been in progress at the Brookhaven Cosmotron. Preliminary results on the fluxes of fast neutrons (upper limits) and of strongly interacting particles above 50 MeV are summarized here (Fig. 1 and Table 1). The four cases studied are: 1-GeV protons on Fe, on chondritic material, and on C 5 H 8 O 2 , and 3-GeV protons on Fe.

Evaluation of AMSOIL® -ANT PGW Coolant Formula Change and Super Space AMSOIL Development

AMSOIL ® Propylene Glycol Water (PGW), is the baselined internal thermal control fluid for multiple manned spacecraft including Gateway (HALO, IHAB, and ALM modules) and Orion. The use of AMSOIL-ANT PGW was originally validated through extensive NASA/Collins materials-compatibility testing (circa 2008–2015). However, in late 2019, AMSOIL implemented an unannounced change in its PG inhibitor package. Because of this reformulation, concerns around materials compatibility arose. Therefore, NASA initiated corrosion rate and coolant stability testing in 2024. Results showed that the reformulated AMSOIL PG produced substantially elevated corrosion rates in aluminum alloys (about two times when compared to the original AMSOIL PG formula) accompanied by visible surface degradation. Coolant stability testing indicated accelerated propylene-glycol breakdown as well, with glycolate levels about nine times higher than the original formulation. Based on these findings, NASA Materials & Processes and Thermal Control Systems groups have baselined the use of the original PGW chemistry for all spacecraft use. In response, AMSOIL produced a reformulated variant, “Super Space AMSOIL” (ANT-SSA), compliant with MPCV 70156.This paper documents the reformulation testing completed, details on the formulation change, and the development of Super Space AMSOIL.

Building Operation Model (Morpheus) for Dallas Fort Worth Airport (CRADA CRD-19-16301 Final Report)

The primary objective of this project was to leverage digital twin technology to enhance the design and operation of DFW Airport terminals and their associated energy systems. To achieve this, Morpheus, a building digital twin, was developed to guide improvements in airport operations, specifically targeting reductions in peak power demand and overall energy consumption.

High-energy, high-power, long-life battery

High-energy-density primary battery achieves energy densities of up to 130 watt hrs./lb. The electrochemical couple consists of a lithium anode, a copper-fluoride cathode, and uses methyl formate/lithium hexafluoroarsenate for the electrolyte. Once achieved, battery life is approximately 30 hours.

Nuclear Safety [Vol. 30, No. 3, July-September 1989]

Nuclear Safety is a review journal that covers significant developments in the field of nuclear safety. Its scope includes the analysis and control of hazards associated with nuclear energy, operations involving fissionable materials, and the products of nuclear fission and their effects on the environment. Primary emphasis is on safety in reactor design, construction, and operation; however, the safety aspects of the entire fuel cycle, including fuel fabrication, spent-fuel processing, nuclear waste disposal, handling of radioisotopes, and environmental effects of these operations, are also treated.
