Performance with and without inlet radial distortion of a transonic fan stage designed for reduced loading in the tip region

A transonic compressor stage designed for a reduced loading in the tip region of the rotor blades was tested with and without inlet radial distortion. The rotor was 50 cm in diameter and designed for an operating tip speed of 420 m/sec. Although the rotor blade loading in the tip region was reduced to provide additional operating range, analysis of the data indicates that the flow around the damper appears to be critical and limited the stable operating range of this stage. For all levels of tip and hub radial distortion, there was a large reduction in the rotor stall margin.

Blade row dynamic digital compression program. Volume 2: J85 circumferential distortion redistribution model, effect of Stator characteristics, and stage characteristics sensitivity study

The results of dynamic digital blade row compressor model studies of a J85-13 engine are reported. The initial portion of the study was concerned with the calculation of the circumferential redistribution effects in the blade-free volumes forward and aft of the compression component. Although blade-free redistribution effects were estimated, no significant improvement over the parallel-compressor type solution in the prediction of total-pressure inlet distortion stability limit was obtained for the J85-13 engine. Further analysis was directed to identifying the rotor dynamic response to spatial circumferential distortions. Inclusion of the rotor dynamic response led to a considerable gain in the ability of the model to match the test data. The impact of variable stator loss on the prediction of the stability limit was evaluated. An assessment of measurement error on the derivation of the stage characteristics and predicted stability limit of the compressor was also performed.

The elastic distortion of the flanged inner ring of a high-speed cylindrical roller bearing

The elastic distortion of the inner ring of an experimental 3,000,000 DN roller bearing is investigated analytically. The geometry of this bearing is unusually complex and for this reason a bearing with an axially symmetric inner ring and shaft is also analyzed. Only the inner ring and shaft are considered using a two-dimensional finite element computer program which enables interference between these components to be accommodated. The results for the experimental bearing suggest that elastic distortions are modest in relation to the design clearances. However, the variation of the radial deflection of the raceway may be significant for some circumstances and the interference fit adopted between the ring and shaft appears to be questionably low.

Bit timing with pulse distortion and intersymbol interference

Pulse distortion and intersymbol interference due to insufficient filtering in PCM and PSK channels cause performance degradation in terms of both bit error probabilities and timing errors. This paper reports the results of a study analyzing these effects on bit timing subsystems. Consideration is given to both the filter-rectifier and transition tracking type of timing subsystem. Although both these systems perform similarly in high SNR and ideal pulse models, pulse distortion and intersymbol affects each differently. The primary effects in both systems is to cause the presence of an irreducible mean squared timing error due to the intersymbol which limits the ultimate performance. Design procedures to minimize the anomalies of both systems are presented, and indicate modifications of the standard timing subsystems. It is found that specific design directions depend on whether the intersymbol or the receiver noise tends to dominate.

Distortion of the microwave background by a hot intergalactic medium

The distortion of the cosmic microwave background by a hot, optically thin intergalactic medium (IGM) is calculated using the full frequency redistribution function. Even if the IGM produces all of the cosmic X-ray background, the distortion of the microwave background is not detectable in the present observational data.

Amplification of Reynolds number dependent processes by wave distortion

The amplification of a Reynolds number dependent process by wave distortion and the possibility of applying the results to other similar Reynolds number dependent processes were investigated. The process investigated was that associated with the operation of a constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer. The application of vaporization limited combustion, the type of combustion typically associated with liquid propellant rocket engines, was studied. A series of experiments were carried out to determine the effect of wave distortion on a Reynolds number dependent process and to establish the analogy between the anemometer process and the combustion process. Parametric trends, behavior common to different chamber geometries, and stability boundaries were identified. The results indicate a high degree of similarity between the two processes and the possibility of using the anemometer system to investigate combustion instability. The nonlinear aspects of a Reynolds number dependent process appear to be the dominant mechanisms controlling instability.

A form-factor method for determining the structure of distorted stars

The equilibrium equations of a uniformly rotating and tidally distorted star are reduced to the same form as for a spherical star except for the inclusion of two form factors. One factor, expressing the buoyancy effects of centrifugal force, is determined directly from the integrated structure variables. The other factor, expressing the deviation from spherical shape, is shown to be relatively insensitive to errors in the assumed shape, so that accurate solutions are obtained in spite of the use of an a priori shape. The method is employed by adding computations for the factors to an existing spherical model program. Upper Main Sequence models determined by this method compare closely with results from the double approximation method even for critical rotation and tidal distortion.

Distortion-rotor interaction noise produced by a drooped inlet

The 'drooped' inlet used on most wing mounted engines produces a wall static pressure distortion at the fan face of about plus or minus 2%. The interaction of the fan rotor with this fixed distortion pattern produces blade passing frequency and harmonic tone levels in flight which contribute to forward radiated engine noise spectra. Data from a wind tunnel test, using both a drooped inlet and an inlet with no droop, show large changes in forward radiated noise levels over a limited fan speed range. An analytical model of this fan noise mechanism is developed and is used to account for the major features of the measured results.

Distortion-free mapping of VISSR imagery data from geosynchronous satellites

The formulation is rigorous and includes all misalignment angles of the VISSR, the sun sensor and the instantaneous spin axis with the satellite's body axis. It also includes the effects due to the motion of the satellite's suborbital point. All the mapping equations for distortion removal were reduced to simplest forms, and all the algorithms were optimized as much as possible. An approach was then formulated for implementing these algorithms for in-line operational use. It is concluded that in-line distortion removal is possible in real-time processing of infra-red but not visible VISSR imagery data.

Interaction of upstream flow distortions with high Mach number cascades

Features of the interaction of flow distortions, such as gusts and wakes with blade rows of advance type fans and compressors having high tip Mach numbers are modeled. A typical disturbance was assumed to have harmonic time dependence and was described, at a far upstream location, in three orthogonal spatial coordinates by a double Fourier series. It was convected at supersonic relative to a linear cascade described as an unrolled annulus. Conditions were selected so that the component of this velocity parallel to the axis of the turbomachine was subsonic, permitting interaction between blades through the upstream as well as downstream flow media. A strong, nearly normal shock was considered in the blade passages which was allowed curvature and displacement. The flows before and after the shock were linearized relative to uniform mean velocities in their respective regions. Solution of the descriptive equations was by adaption of the Wiener-Hopf technique, enabling a determination of distortion patterns through and downstream of the cascade as well as pressure distributions on the blade and surfaces. Details of interaction of the disturbance with the in-passage shock were discussed. Infuences of amplitude, wave length, and phase of the disturbance on lifts and moments of cascade configurations are presented. Numerical results are clarified by reference to an especially orderly pattern of upstream vertical motion in relation to the cascade parameters.

Transfer and distortion of atmospheric information in the satellite temperature retrieval problem

A systematic approach to investigating the transfer of basic ambient temperature information and its distortion by satellite systems and subsequent analysis algorithms is discussed. The retrieval analysis cycle is derived, the variance spectrum of information is examined as it takes different forms in that process, and the quality and quantity of information existing at each stop is compared with the initial ambient temperature information. Temperature retrieval algorithms can smooth, add, or further distort information, depending on how stable the algorithm is, and how heavily influenced by a priori data.
