Enzymatic cleavage of model lignin dimers depends on pH, enzyme, and bond type

Lignin is composed of phenylpropanoid monomers linked by ether and carbon-carbon bonds to form a complex heterogeneous structure. Bond-specific studies of lignin-modifying enzymes (LMEs; e.g., laccases and peroxidases) are limited by the polymerization of model lignin substrates and repolymerization of cleavage products. Here we present a high throughput platform to screen LME activities on four tagged model lignin compounds that represent the β-O-4’, β-β’, 5–5’, and 4-O-5’ linkages in lignin. We utilized nanostructure-initiator mass spectrometry (NIMS) and model lignin compounds with tags containing perfluorinated and cationic moieties, which effectively limit polymerization and condensation of the substrates and their degrading products. Sub-microliter sample droplets were printed on the NIMS chip with a novel robotics method. This rapid platform enabled characterization of LMEs across a range of pH 3–10 and relative quantification of modified (typically oxidized), cleaved, and polymerized products. All tested enzymes oxidized the four substrates and cleaved the β-O-4’ and β-β’ substrates to monomeric products. We discovered that the active pH range depended on both the substrate and the enzyme type. This has important applications for biomass conversion to biofuels and bioproducts, where the relative percentages of different bond types in lignin varies depending on feedstock and chemical pretreatment methods.

Dimerization of terminal alkynes promoted by a heterobimetallic Zr/Co complex

Enynes are signifcant synthetic intermediates that are also found in a variety of natural products and other biologically relevant molecules. The most atom economical synthetic route to enynes is via the direct coupling of readily available terminal alkyne precursors. Towards this end, we demonstrate the formation of 1,3-enynes from terminal alkynes facilitated by a reduced Zr IV /Co -I heterobimetallic complex. An intermediate is trapped as a tBuNC adduct, revealing that bimetallic activation of the terminal C-H bond of the alkyne is an essential mechanistic step.

Dimerization and ring-opening in bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) mediated by [U(NR 2 ) 3 (CCPh)] (R = SiMe 3 )

Here the addition of 2 equiv. of bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) to [U(NR 2 ) 3 (CCPh)] (1, R = SiMe 3 ), in Et 2 O, results in formation of [cyclo-N(iPr)C(Me) 2 CH(NiPr 2 )C{[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC 3 (NiPr 2 ) 2 }][U(NR 2 ) 2 (N(SiMe 3 )SiMe 2 CH 2 )(CCPh)] (2) in moderate isolated yield. Complex 2 is the result of coupling and protonation of two BAC molecules, where complex 1 contributes the required proton. It was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography and represents a new mode of reactivity of the cyclopropenylidene fragment.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties in semiconducting Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 with Eu-Eu dimers

Magnetic structure and crystal symmetry, which primarily determine the time-reversal and inversion symmetry, may give rise to numerous exotic quantum phenomena in magnetic semiconductors and semimetals when arranged in different patterns. Here, a new layered magnetic semiconductor, Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 , was discovered and high-quality single crystals were grown using the Sn flux. According to structural characterization by x-ray diffraction and atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 is found to crystallize in a hexagonal symmetry with the space group P6 3 /mmc (No. 194). After examining different specimens, we conclude that their stoichiometry is fixed at ~Eu 2.6 Zn 0.65 Sn 0.85 As 3 , which meets the chemical charge balance. Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 is composed of septuple (Eu 1-δ Sn y As 2 )-Eu-(Zn x As)-Eu sequences. The shortest Eu–Eu distance in the system is between two Eu layers separated by Zn x As along the c-axis. Magnetization measurement shows an antiferromagnetic ordering in Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 at T N ~ 12 K, where the magnetic easy-axis is along the c-axis, and Mössbauer spectroscopy observes magnetic hyperfine splitting on Eu and Sn at 6 K. Magnetic anisotropy is significantly different from the ones along the ab-plane in other layered Eu-based magnetic semimetals. Heat capacity measurements confirm the magnetic transition around 12 K. Electrical resistivity measurement indicates semiconductor behavior with a band gap of ~0.86 eV. Finally, various Eu-based magnetic semiconductors could provide a tunable platform to study potential topological and magnetic properties.

Dynamical properties of a driven dissipative dimerized $S$ =1/2 chain

We consider the dynamical properties of a gapped quantum spin system coupled to the electric field of a laser, which drives the resonant excitation of specific phonon modes that modulate the magnetic interactions. Here, we deduce the quantum master equations governing the time-evolution of both the lattice and spin sectors, by developing a Lindblad formalism with bath operators providing an explicit description of their respective phonon-mediated damping terms. We investigate the nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) of the spin system established by a continuous driving, delineating parameter regimes in driving frequency, damping, and spin-phonon coupling for the establishment of physically meaningful NESS and their related nontrivial properties. Focusing on the regime of generic weak spin-phonon coupling, we characterize the NESS by their frequency and wave-vector content, explore their transient and relaxation behavior, and discuss the energy flow, the system temperature, and the critical role of the type of bath adopted. Our study lays a foundation for the quantitative modeling of experiments currently being designed to control coherent many-body spin states in quantum magnetic materials.

Infrared surface phonon nanospectroscopy of an interacting dielectric-particle–dielectric-substrate dimer using fast electrons

Refinements in energy monochromation and aberration correction in state-of-the-art scanning transmission electron microscopes has opened access to the far infrared regime for spectroscopic characterization at the nanoscale. At these low energies, the dielectric environment, such as a dielectric slab adjacent to the target specimen, may no longer play a passive role in the spectrum. Instead, the environment may itself host resonances that mix with those of the target and complicate interpretation of its spectral responses. This article explores a theoretical description of the coupling between the collective vibrational surface modes of a dielectric particle and dielectric slab of varying thickness for the purpose of elucidating the interacting phononic excitations in dielectric materials typical of inelastic electron scattering measurements in the infrared. Dynamical coordinates and a governing Hamiltonian are rigorously defined in the quasistatic limit to account for phonon mode mixing and forcing by an aloof electron probe, which travels along a grazing trajectory, parallel to the dielectric slab. As the spectral window of interrogation by fast electron probes has been extended down to thermal energies with unprecedented meV energy resolution, theoretical models like that presented herein are crucial for accurate interpretation of experimental data.

Magnetic and quadrupole coupling emerging in NdB 4 with geometrically frustrated orthogonal antiferromagnetic dimer

Unusual successive order in NdB 4 with the frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice was investigated by means of inelastic neutron scattering. Here, we found that the pseudoquartet with |±5/2⟩ and |±7/2⟩ in the paramagnetic state splits into four levels in the magnetically ordered states. The observed spectra are in good agreement with the 𝑓-electron states obtained from the on-site Hamiltonian with the magnetic interaction ⟨𝐽 𝑥 ⟩ ⁢𝐽 𝑥 , the coupling of 𝐽 𝑥 with quadrupole 𝑂 𝑧⁢𝑥 , and the crystalline electric field potential. The 𝑓-electron states reproduce the temperature dependences of the in-plane moment 𝑚 ⊥ = ⟨𝐽 𝑥 ⟩, which is the primary order parameter, and a weakly induced 𝑚 𝑐 = ⟨𝐽 𝑧 ⟩ as the secondary order parameter. The magnetic-quadrupole coupling emerges and plays an essential role under the geometrical frustration, where the Heisenberg interactions are canceled out.

Emergent Dimer-Model Topological Order and Quasiparticle Excitations in Liquid Crystals: Combinatorial Vortex Lattices

Liquid crystals have proven to provide a versatile experimental and theoretical platform for studying topological objects such as vortices, skyrmions, and hopfions. In parallel, in hard condensed matter physics, the concept of topological phases and topological order has been introduced in the context of spin liquids to investigate emergent phenomena like quantum Hall effects and high-temperature superconductivity. Here, we bridge these two seemingly disparate perspectives on topology in physics. Combining experiments and simulations, we show how topological defects in liquid crystals can be used as versatile building blocks to create complex, highly degenerate topological phases, which we refer to as “combinatorial vortex lattices” (CVLs). CVLs exhibit extensive residual entropy and support locally stable quasiparticle excitations in the form of charge-conserving topological monopoles, which can act as mobile information carriers and be linked via Dirac strings. CVLs can be rewritten and reconfigured on demand, endowed with various symmetries, and modified through laser-induced topological surgery—an essential capability for information storage and retrieval. We demonstrate experimentally the realization, stability, and precise optical manipulation of CVLs, thus opening new avenues for understanding and technologically exploiting higher-hierarchy topology in liquid crystals and other ordered media.
