Differentiable Simulation of a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber

Liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) are widely used in particle detection for their tracking and calorimetric capabilities. The particle physics community actively builds and improves high-quality simulators for such detectors in order to develop physics analyses in a realistic setting. The ability of these simulators to mimic real, measured data is limited by the modeling of the physical detectors used for data collection. This modeling can be improved by performing dedicated calibration measurements. Conventional approaches calibrate individual detector parameters or processes one at a time. However, the impact of detector processes is entangled, making this a poor description of the underlying physics. We introduce a differentiable simulator that enables a gradient-based optimization, allowing for the first time a simultaneous calibration of all detector parameters. We describe the procedure of making a differentiable simulator, highlighting the challenges of retaining the physics quality of the standard, non-differentiable version while providing meaningful gradient information. We further discuss the advantages and drawbacks of using our differentiable simulator for calibration. Finally, we provide a starting point for extensions to our approach, including applications of the differentiable simulator to physics analysis pipelines.

Direct preemptive stabilization of $m,n$ = 2,1 neoclassical tearing modes by electron cyclotron current drive in the DIII-D low-torque ITER baseline scenario

We report the first preemptive direct stabilization of $m,n$ = 2,1 neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs) in DIII-D low-torque ITER baseline scenario plasmas by electron cyclotron waves. These experiments strongly support that the observed stabilization is achieved by replacing the missing bootstrap current in the island by electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD). These plasmas (with and without ECCD) are stable to 2,1 NTMs when the differential rotation between the q = 1 and q = 2 surfaces (Δf 1,2 ) is sustained above a critical value (Δf CRIT ≈ 1 kHz), but those evolving to low differential rotation (Δf 1,2 < Δf CRIT ) routinely develop a disruptive 2,1 island at the time and frequency of a sawtooth precursor. Preemptive, local and direct stabilization by ECCD is tested by scanning the current drive amplitude and location inside and outside of the q = 2 rational surface shot by shot. Analysis of only low differential rotation time windows, i.e. when stabilization from Δf 1,2 is absent, shows focused ECCD at q = 2 prevents the onset of 2,1 NTMs. These results are important, as they give the first demonstration of disruptive NTM control by ECCD in the plasma scenario planned for ITER.

The role of stiffness in training and generalization of ResNets

Neural ordinary differential equations (NODEs) have recently regained popularity as large-depth limits of a large class of neural networks. In particular, residual neural networks (ResNets) are equivalent to an explicit Euler discretization of an underlying NODE, where the transition from one layer to the next is one time step of the discretization. The relationship between continuous and discrete neural networks has been of particular interest. Notably, analysis from the ordinary differential equation viewpoint can potentially lead to new insights for understanding the behavior of neural networks in general. In this work, we take inspiration from differential equations to define the concept of stiffness for a ResNet via the interpretation of a ResNet as the discretization of a NODE. Here, we then examine the effects of stiffness on the ability of a ResNet to generalize, via computational studies on example problems coming from climate and chemistry models. We find that penalizing stiffness does have a unique regularizing effect, but we see no benefit to penalizing stiffness over L 2 regularization (penalization of network parameter norms) in terms of predictive performance.

First Extraction of Single Differential Cross-Sections on Argon for CC1$\mu$2p0$\pi$ Event Topologies in the MicroBooNE Detector

The precise measurement of cross-sections for a variety of interactions is critical to the success of forthcoming flagship neutrino experiments. Of special interest are neutrino interactions that leave the nucleus in a 2-particle 2-hole state (2p2h). This note will present the first cross-section measurement for the production of 2p2h states on argon. Using MicroBooNE data collected from the first three years of operation, we select events corresponding to a charged-current $ν_µ$ interaction that left the argon nucleus in a 2p2h state. These interactions produce a topology with one muon and two protons in the final state (CC1$\mu$2p0$\pi$). This analysis targets a single differential cross-section measurement for CC1$\mu$2p0$\pi$ event topologies in a variety of kinematic variables. Comparisons are made to a set of theoretical models that explore different cross-section modeling configurations.

Identification of LiH and nanocrystalline LiF in the solid–electrolyte interphase of lithium metal anodes

A comprehensive understanding of the solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) composition is crucial to developing high-energy batteries based on lithium metal anodes. A particularly contentious issue concerns the presence of LiH in the SEI. In this work, we report on the use of synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis to identify and differentiate two elusive components, LiH and LiF, in the SEI of lithium metal anodes. LiH is identified as a component of the SEI in high abundance, and the possibility of its misidentification as LiF in the literature is discussed. LiF in the SEI is found to have different structural features from LiF in the bulk phase, including a larger lattice parameter and a smaller grain size (<3 nm). These characteristics favour Li + transport and explain why an ionic insulator, like LiF, has been found to be a favoured component for the SEI. Finally, pair distribution function analysis reveals key amorphous components in the SEI.

Observations of Mantle Seismic Anisotropy Using Array Techniques: Shear-Wave Splitting of Beamformed SmKS Phases

Shear-wave splitting measurements are commonly used to resolve seismic anisotropy in both the upper and lowermost mantle. Typically, such techniques are applied to SmKS phases that have reflected (m-1) times off the underside of the core-mantle boundary before being recorded. Practical constraints for shear-wave splitting studies include the limited number of suitable phases as well as the large fraction of available data discarded because of poor signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) or large measurement uncertainties. Array techniques such as beamforming are commonly used in observational seismology to enhance SNRs, but have not been applied before to improve SmKS signal strength and coherency for shear wave splitting studies. Here, we investigate how a beamforming methodology, based on slowness and backazimuth vespagrams to determine the most coherent incoming wave direction, can improve shear-wave splitting measurement confidence intervals. Through the analysis of real and synthetic seismograms, we show that (a) the splitting measurements obtained from the beamformed seismograms (beams) reflect an average of the single-station splitting parameters that contribute to the beam; (b) the beams have (on average) more than twice as large SNRs than the single-station seismograms that contribute to the beam; (c) the increased SNRs allow the reliable measurement of shear wave splitting parameters from beams down to average single-station SNRs of 1.3. Beamforming may thus be helpful to more reliably measure splitting due to upper mantle anisotropy. Moreover, here we show that beamforming holds potential to greatly improve detection of lowermost mantle anisotropy by demonstrating differential SKS–SKKS splitting analysis using beamformed USArray data.
