Development of Langmuir and Spatially Resolved OES Diagnostics for Arc Jet Shock and Boundary Layer Measurements Relevant to Atmospheric Re-Entry Environments

The second-generation miniature Arc Jet Research Chamber (mARC) ground testing facility at NASA Ames requires physical characterization of its supersonic plasma flow to verify numerical models and material sample testing. Two types of plasma diagnostics will be utilized: Langmuir probes and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Several single and triple Langmuir probes have been constructed and will be inserted parallel to the flow via a sweep arm to measure post-shock electron temperature and number density along radial profiles at different axial distances. Due to the high heat flux (200-3000 W/cm2) sweep durations are necessarily short (< 0.1 s). Measuring these properties near the probe surface provide characterization of the post-shock environment. This is an important metric for validating coupled CFD-material codes, and will provide insight into longstanding thermocouple anomalies attributed to charging of heatshield surfaces. An OES system has also been assembled to obtain spatially resolved density and temperature for various flow species. The system consists of a convex lens that forms an image of the plasma onto a 16-channel linear fiber array, which will simultaneously capture the spectra from sixteen different locations. The light emission from the plasma is then focused by a spherical mirror into a spectrometer and recorded with a camera. These measurements non-intrusively provide a new spatially resolved flow characterization capability. This will initially be used to resolve issues with shock radiation interference in pyrometer measurements of material surface temperature. The design of each diagnostic and any initial results will be discussed.

The Case for Solar Full-disk Spectral Diagnostics: Chromosphere to Corona

In the context of the recent call for white papers for the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) 2024–2033, we present the argument that spatially-resolved spectral diagnostics over the full solar disk should be made a high-priority goal in Heliophysics and lead to the development of a mission concept that has the potential to become a cornerstone of the Heliophysics System Observatory (HSO). We claim that a mission providing consistent full-disk sampling of plasma properties (Doppler-shifts, non-thermal velocities, electron densities, elemental composition, etc.) of the chromosphere-corona system at the dynamic timescales of solar eruptive phenomena will revolutionize the field by adding the spectral diagnostics capability to the highly successful concept of full-disk imaging, everywhere, all the time, represented by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We argue for it to be developed by the end of the current Decadal Survey cycle around the lessons learned from spectroscopic missions in the current NASA development pipeline, that include innovative strategies for faster integration of large fields-of-view, and comprehensive temperature coverage.

Overview of Extractive and Optical PM Measurements from the NASA SE-5 High Pressure Flame Diagnostics Laboratory

Soot emissions measurements of multiphase non-premixed flames are sparse in the literature due to the complexities of sampling in such environments. We present an overview from on-going work at the NASA SE-5 High Pressure Flame Diagnostics laboratory focusing on soot and gaseous emissions at elevated pressures. SE-5 is a gaseous and liquid fueled high pressure flame tube facility capable of operating at pressures up to 880 psia, cooling capacity of 4,000,000 BTU/hr, liquid fuel flow rates up to 2 GPH, and an equivalence ratio range of 0.2 (fuel lean) to 4 (fuel rich). SE-5 provides optical access via four UV-grade fused silica optical windows of the primary reaction zone enabling non-intrusive optical diagnostics of the flame.

Ocular static and dynamic light scattering: a noninvasive diagnostic tool for eye research and clinical practice

The noninvasive techniques of static and dynamic light scattering are emerging as valuable diagnostic tools for the early detection of ocular and systemic diseases. These include corneal abnormalities, pigmentary dispersion syndrome, glaucoma, cataract, diabetic vitreopathy, and possibly macular degeneration. Systemic conditions such as diabetes and possibly Alzheimer's disease can potentially be detected early via ocular tissues. The current state of development of these techniques for application to ophthalmic research and ultimately clinical practice is reviewed. (c) 2004 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
