Development of EPA aircraft piston engine emission standards

Piston engine light aircraft are significant sources of carbon monoxide in the vicinity of high activity general aviation airports. Substantial reductions in carbon monoxide were achieved by fuel mixture leaning using improved fuel management systems. The air quality impact of the hydrocarbon and oxides of nitrogen emissions from piston engine light aircraft were insufficient to justify the design constraints being confronted in present control system developments.

Ku-band signal design study

The acquisition/tracking performance of a practical squaring loop in which the times two multiplier is mechanized as a limiter/multiplier combination is evaluated. This squaring approach serves to produce the absolute value of the arriving signal as opposed to the perfect square law action which is required in order to render acquisition and tracking performance equivalent to that of a Costas loop. The Ku-Band orbiter signal design for the forward link is assessed. Acquisition time results and acquisition and tracking thresholds are summarized. A tradeoff study which pertains to bit synchronization techniques for the high rate Ku-Band channel is included and an optimum selection is made based upon the appropriate design constraints.

The imaging photopolarimeter - The first extraterrestrial spin-scan imager

The paper describes the imaging photopolarimeter used to take close-ups of Jupiter from Pioneers 10 and 11. The instrument operates in a steerable spin-scan mode of operation, contains a 1 in. diameter, f/3.4 Maksutov telescope with a focal plane aperture whose size is selectable. The paper examines those aspects of the design that are substantially influenced by the unusual design constraints, such as choice of detector and method of steering the telescope, and demonstrates the image processing and display techniques used to create the images from the telemetry and correct them for distortion and other defects.

Loading tests of a wing structure for a hypersonic aircraft

Room-temperature loading tests were conducted on a wing structure designed with a beaded panel concept for a Mach 8 hypersonic research airplane. Strain, stress, and deflection data were compared with the results of three finite-element structural analysis computer programs and with design data. The test program data were used to evaluate the structural concept and the methods of analysis used in the design. A force stiffness technique was utilized in conjunction with load conditions which produced various combinations of panel shear and compression loading to determine the failure envelope of the buckling critical beaded panels The force-stiffness data did not result in any predictions of buckling failure. It was, therefore, concluded that the panels were conservatively designed as a result of design constraints and assumptions of panel eccentricities. The analysis programs calculated strains and stresses competently. Comparisons between calculated and measured structural deflections showed good agreement. The test program offered a positive demonstration of the beaded panel concept subjected to room-temperature load conditions.

Subsonic aircraft: Evolution and the matching of size to performance

Methods for estimating the approximate size, weight, and power of aircraft intended to meet specified performance requirements are presented for both jet-powered and propeller-driven aircraft. The methods are simple and require only the use of a pocket computer for rapid application to specific sizing problems. Application of the methods is illustrated by means of sizing studies of a series of jet-powered and propeller-driven aircraft with varying design constraints. Some aspects of the technical evolution of the airplane from 1918 to the present are also briefly discussed.

Use of K sub A-band for radio metric determinations

The use of K sub A-band to alleviate the radio metric degradation caused by charged particles is discussed. Those aspects of radio metrics which are relevant to the possible future use of K sub A-band deep space to Earth and Earth to deep space links are reviewed. In particular the effects of the Earth ionosphere, troposphere, and solar plasma are examined. It is concluded that, from the standpoint of reducing the harmful effects of charged particles, the use of K sub A-band appears highly desirable. While stability will be a more serious design constraint at K sub A-band than it is at X-band (for example in the ground power amplifier and the spacecraft multiplier stages) this problem is amenable to a state of the art engineering solution.

Thin film strain transducer

Previous attempts to develop an appropriate sensor for measuring the stress or strain of high altitude balloons during flight are reviewed as well as the various conditions that must be met by such a device. The design, development and calibration of a transducer which promises to satisfy the necessary design constraints are described. The thin film strain transducer has a low effective modulus so as not to interfere with the strain that would naturally occur in the balloon. In addition, the transducer has a high sensitivity to longitudinal strain (7.216 mV/V/unit strain) which is constant for all temperature from room temperature to -80 C and all strains from 5 percent compression to 10 percent tensile strain. At the same time, the sensor is relatively insensitive (0.27 percent) to transverse forces. The device has a standard 350 ohm impedance which is compatible with available bridge balance, amplification and telemetry instrumentation now available for balloon flight. Recommendations are included for improved coatings to provide passive thermal control as well as model, tethered and full scale flight testing.

NASA progress in aircraft noise prediction

Langley Research Center efforts to develop a methodology for predicting the effective perceived noise level (EPNL) produced by jet-powered CTOL aircraft to an accuracy of + or - 1.5 dB are summarized with emphasis on the aircraft noise prediction program (ANOPP) which contains a complete set of prediction methods for CTOL aircraft including propulsion system noise sources, aerodynamic or airframe noise sources, forward speed effects, a layered atmospheric model with molecular absorption, ground impedance effects including excess ground attenuation, and a received noise contouring capability. The present state of ANOPP is described and its accuracy and applicability to the preliminary aircraft design process is assessed. Areas are indicated where further theoretical and experimental research on noise prediction are needed. Topics covered include the elements of the noise prediction problem which are incorporated in ANOPP, results of comparisons of ANOPP calculations with measured noise levels, and progress toward treating noise as a design constraint in aircraft system studies.

Internal fuse modules for solid tantalum capacitors

Miniature fuse modules were designed for and incorporated into two styles of solid tantalum capacitors. One is an epoxy molded, radial leaded, high frequency decoupling capacitor; the other is an hermetically sealed device with axial lead wires. The fusible element for both devices consists of a fine bimetallic wire which reacts exothermically upon reaching a critical temperature and then disintegrates. The desirability of having fused devices is discussed and design constraints, in particular those which minimize inductance and series resistance while optimizing fuse actuation characteristics, are reviewed. Factors affecting the amount of energy required to actuate the fuse and reliability of acuation are identified.

Sensitivity analysis of physiological factors in space habitat design

The costs incurred by design conservatism in space habitat design are discussed from a structural standpoint, and areas of physiological research into less than earth-normal conditions that offer the greatest potential decrease in habitat construction and operating costs are studied. The established range of human tolerance limits is defined for those physiological conditions which directly affect habitat structural design. These entire ranges or portions thereof are set as habitat design constraints as a function of habitat population and degree of ecological closure. Calculations are performed to determine the structural weight and cost associated with each discrete population size and its selected environmental conditions, on the basis of habitable volume equivalence for four basic habitat configurations: sphere, cylinder with hemispherical ends, torus, and crystal palace.

Berthing/docking

Three studies were completed establishing sensor performance, technology status, and conceptual design requirements for rendezvous stationkeeping, and docking. A consideration of design constraints and the availale technology has led to the conclusion that the sensor should be a CW optical radar employing a semiconductor-laser transmitter and an image-dissector receiver. The performance obtainable for a representative sensor was compared to specifications generated during the study and it was found that this type of sensor can meet the needs of future Earth-orbital operations.

The usage of substructuring analyses in the Get Away Special (GAS) program

The use of automatic multi-stage substructing analysis is demonstrated for a hypothetical case of a GAS container supported by structural channels with a simulated experimental package inside the container. The GAS program purpose is stated and potential candidate structures to support experimental packages are discussed. The GAS container model and the substructuring analysis capabilities of NASTRAN make it possible to study the experiments inside the container as well as the design constraints resulting from the support structures holding the containers. The use of substructuring in the GAS program could be an important factor in increasing the number of flight opportunities.

V-band integrated quadriphase modulator

A V-band integrated circuit quadriphase shift keyed modulator/exciter for space communications systems was developed. Intersatellite communications systems require direct modulation at 60 GHz to enhance signal processing capability. For most systems, particularly space applications, small and lightweight components are essential to alleviate severe system design constraints. Thus to achieve wideband, high data rate systems, direct modulation techniques at millimeter waves using solid state integrated circuit technology are an integral part of the overall technology developments.

Software used with the flux mapper at the solar parabolic dish test site

Software for data archiving and data display was developed for use on a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDP-11/34A minicomputer for use with the JPL-designed flux mapper. The flux mapper is a two-dimensional, high radiant energy scanning device designed to measure radiant flux energies expected at the focal point of solar parabolic dish concentrators. Interfacing to the DEC equipment was accomplished by standard RS-232C serial lines. The design of the software was dicated by design constraints of the flux-mapper controller. Early attemps at data acquisition from the flux-mapper controller were not without difficulty. Time and personnel limitations result in an alternative method of data recording at the test site with subsequent analysis accomplished at a data evaluation location at some later time. Software for plotting was also written to better visualize the flux patterns. Recommendations for future alternative development are discussed. A listing of the programs used in the anaysis is included in an appendix.
