AC loss and contact resistance in REBCO CORC ® , Roebel, and stacked tape cables

Abstract Many high-temperature superconductor (HTS) applications require superconducting cables with high currents while operating in an alternating magnetic field. HTS cables should be composed of numerous superconducting tapes to achieve the required current capacity. Alternating current and magnetic fields cause AC losses in such cables and can provoke conductor instability. AC losses and contact resistances were measured of several cable designs based on commercially available REBCO tapes at the University of Twente. The AC loss was measured under identical conditions for eight REBCO conductors manufactured according to three types of cabling methods—CORC ® (Conductor on Round Core), Roebel, and stacked tape, including a full-size REBCO CICC (cable in conduit conductor). The measurements were done at T = 4.2 K without transport current in a sinusoidal AC magnetic field of 0.4 T amplitude and frequencies from 5 to 55 mHz. The AC loss was measured simultaneously by calibrated gas flow calorimeter utilizing the helium boil-off method and by the magnetization method using pick-up coils. Also, the AC loss of two CORC® conductors and a Roebel cable was measured at 77 K. Each conductor was measured with and without background field of 1 T. The measured AC coupling loss in the CORC ® and Roebel conductors is negligible at 4.2 K for the applied conditions while at 77 K coupling loss was observed for all conductors. The absence of coupling loss at 4.2 K can be explained by shielding of the conductor interior; this is confirmed with measurement and calculation of the penetration field of CORC ® and Roebel cables. The inter-tape contact resistance was measured for CORC ® and stacked tape samples at 4.2 and 77 K. It was demonstrated that a short heat treatment of CORC ® conductor with solder-coated tapes activates tape-to-tape soldering and decreases the contact resistance. The reduction of contact resistance by two orders in magnitude to tens of nΩm is comparable with the interstrand contact resistance in ITER Nb 3 Sn type conductors.

Three-dimensional co-axial linear photonic switch

Techniques, systems, and devices are disclosed that relate to coaxial photoconductive switch modules. The coaxial photoconductive switch may include an outer conductor, an inner conductor, and a photoconductive material positioned between the inner conductor and the outer conductor. The inner conductor, the outer conductor, and the photoconductive material have a predetermined height. A bias voltage may be applied between the inner conductor and the outer conductor. When light of a predetermined wavelength and a predetermined intensity is incident on the photoconductive material, the photoconductive material may break down allowing a current to flow through the photoconductive material between the inner conductor and the outer conductor.

Significant reduction in the low-field magnetization of Nb 3 Sn superconducting strands using the internal oxidation APC approach

Nb 3 Sn superconductors are promising for building accelerator magnets for future energy-frontier circular colliders. A critical factor for this application is the low-field persistent-current magnetization because it leads to several critical issues: e.g. low-field instability (including flux jumps), hysteresis loss, and field errors in magnet bores. Suppression of low-field magnetization requires reduction of low-field critical current density (J c ) or effective subelement size (d eff ). However, reduction of deff of state-of-the-art Nb 3 Sn conductors—the restacked-rod-process (RRP ® ) type—below 40–50 μm without a pronounced decrease in high-field J c is difficult. On the other hand, the internal oxidation method which forms artificial pinning centers (APC) in Nb 3 Sn offers an alternative approach to reducing the low-field magnetization. Compared with a conventional Nb 3 Sn conductor whose flux pinning force versus field (F p –B) curve peaks at ~20% of its irreversibility field (B irr ), the F p –B curve peaks of APC conductors shift to higher fields due to the point pinning effect, leading to flattening of the J c –B curves. The goal of this paper is to quantitatively study how much the APC approach can reduce the low-field magnetization. Here we measured the J c –B curves of an RRP ® conductor and two APC conductors (reacted at 700 °C) from zero field to B irr using a high-field vibrating sample magnetometer. Here the results showed that the APC conductors have higher non-Cu J c at high fields (e.g. 32%–41% higher at 16 T) and simultaneously lower non-Cu Jc at low fields (e.g. 28%–34% lower at 1 T) compared with the RRP ® . This effect is due to a competition between their Nb3Sn layer fraction ratios and layer F p ratios. Suppose they reach the same 16 T non-Cu J c , then the 1 T non-Cu J c and magnetization of the APC conductors are only half or even less compared with the RRP ® conductor.

Gyromagnetic nonlinear transmission line for radio frequency signal generation and pulse compression

Disclosed are non-linear transmission lines using ferromagnetic materials to generate ferromagnetic resonance oscillations. In one aspect, a non-linear transmission line apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes an outer conductor having a first side and a second internally facing side, and an inner conductor positioned internal to the non-linear transmission line apparatus. The apparatus further includes a ferromagnetic material surrounding the inner conductor, wherein the ferromagnetic material comprises nanoparticles of an ε-polymorph of iron oxide expressed as ε-Fe2O3. The apparatus also includes a first dielectric material positioned between the outer conductor and the inner conductor, the dielectric material in contact with both the ferromagnetic material and with the second internally facing side of the outer conductor, wherein the outer conductor, the inner conductor, the dielectric material and the ferromagnetic material form the nonlinear transmission line.
