Outcomes of HPC User Support using a Science Gateway AI Assistant

High Performance Computing (HPC) is a vital resource for nuclear energy research, facilitating advanced simulations and complex modeling of the quantification and qualification of advanced reactor technology. However, a common gap in knowledge exists around utilizing HPC systems, particularly for nuclear energy researchers unfamiliar with specific HPC systems. A researcher may be well-versed in using one HPC system and understanding its associated processes. Yet, they might struggle when faced with a different HPC system and its unique processes. HPC support staff play a crucial role in addressing these challenges by providing educational resources and assisting users. However, they also face the challenge of maintaining these systems and ensuring they run efficiently for all users, a responsibility that can be challenging to scale effectively with the increasing demand and expansion of HPC systems. This paper addresses this knowledge gap with an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant that offers on-demand, site-specific HPC support for researchers. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has deployed an AI assistant that is intended to supplement expert HPC support staff and assist nuclear energy researchers. This paper reports on a four-and-a-half-month study evaluating the integration of an AI assistant within a science gateway, with the goal of enhancing existing HPC support.

Modeling the Interaction of Laser-Produced Proton Beams with Matter

A major goal of this project is to significantly increase our understanding of isochoric heating of matter using laser produced proton beams, and the associated high energy density (HED) and warm dense matter (WDM) regimes generated. This will benefit research fields such as planetary science, fusion energy, plasma physics, and material science. For example, it will enhance our understanding of WDM properties of iron and silica under conditions encountered in planetary interiors and diagnostic components in fusion devices exposed to high fluxes of energetic plasma ions. The project is motivated by recent experiments that irradiated Si targets with proton beams generated by the 20 TW-laser at the SLAC MEC end-station. The HED/WDM states are probed using the 50 fs hard X-rays available in the 3rd harmonic of the LCLS. As part of this project, results from the phase contrast X-ray imaging, which shows the generation of compression waves that produces rear surface spallation, are compared with results from the 3D multi-physics multi- material code, PISALE, that combines Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) hydrodynamics with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR). This comparison required modifications to several physics models in the PISALE (Pacific Island Structured-AMR with ALE) code. An important aspect of this project is the continued training of graduate students in HED physics and in conducting complex multiphysics simulations.

DGaaS: GPU as a Service on Distributed Computing System

In the rapidly evolving landscape of scientific computing, Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have become indispensable for their unparalleled ability to handle parallel tasks in complex calculations, simulations, and data analysis. Their utility is further magnified in machine learning and AI applications, where they significantly accelerate model training and predictive analytics. Within this context, the Triton Inference Server emerges as a pivotal open-source tool, specializing in AI inferencing and optimizing GPU utilization across various platforms and frameworks. This paper presents an in-depth study on distributed High Throughput Computing (HTC), specifically focusing on the HTCondor framework and its resource provisioning tools, GlideinWMS and HEPCloud. These systems enable large-scale scientific experiments like CMS and DUNE to efficiently access and utilize vast computational resources. The paper explores the core architectural components of GlideinWMS, including jobs, user pools, and worker nodes, and discusses their integration with GPUs and the Triton server. The primary aim of this research is to develop a solution that optimizes GPU utilization by leveraging Glideins and containers. This approach allows computational jobs, particularly those involving AI models, to use GPUs only when essential, thereby facilitating efficient sharing of limited GPU resources. To validate this architecture, the study conducted three key tests involving custom scripts, container-based servers, and Triton server deployments. However, the study faces challenges, notably in locating the Triton server and ensuring secure remote access. To address these issues, future work will focus on developing a proxy mechanism and enhancing security protocols. In conclusion, this study offers a comprehensive roadmap for effective and efficient GPU utilization in distributed High Throughput Computing. It aims to contribute significantly to the scientific community by solving pressing problems and implementing robust solutions in collaboration with the GlideinWMS and HEPCloud teams. The research sets the stage for a more efficient, scalable, and cost-effective paradigm in scientific computing.

Electrochemical testing of metals for petroleum wastewater monitoring

The purpose of this project was to determine the feasibility of ion-selective electrode (ISE) as compared to x-ray fluorescence (XRF) for determining the concentrations of metal ions in petroleum wastewater. ISEs for silver and cadmium were tested in a laboratory under increasingly realistic conditions, then deployed in the sewer wastewater monitoring complex to simulate a petroleum wastewater system. By verifying the ISE calibration after wastewater exposure and comparing its measurements to the XRF systems within the wastewater monitoring system, we determined that the ISE is more sensitive but less feasible for use in live wastewater monitoring due to fouling concerns.

General quantum algorithms for Hamiltonian simulation with applications to a non-Abelian lattice gauge theory

With a focus on universal quantum computing for quantum simulation, and through the example of lattice gauge theories, we introduce rather general quantum algorithms that can efficiently simulate certain classes of interactions consisting of correlated changes in multiple (bosonic and fermionic) quantum numbers with non-trivial functional coefficients. In particular, we analyze diagonalization of Hamiltonian terms using a singular-value decomposition technique, and discuss how the achieved diagonal unitaries in the digitized time-evolution operator can be implemented. The lattice gauge theory studied is the SU(2) gauge theory in 1+1 dimensions coupled to one flavor of staggered fermions, for which a complete quantum-resource analysis within different computational models is presented. The algorithms are shown to be applicable to higher-dimensional theories as well as to other Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories. The example chosen further demonstrates the importance of adopting efficient theoretical formulations: it is shown that an explicitly gauge-invariant formulation using loop, string, and hadron degrees of freedom simplifies the algorithms and lowers the cost compared with the standard formulations based on angular-momentum as well as the Schwinger-boson degrees of freedom. The loop-string-hadron formulation further retains the non-Abelian gauge symmetry despite the inexactness of the digitized simulation, without the need for costly controlled operations. Such theoretical and algorithmic considerations are likely to be essential in quantumly simulating other complex theories of relevance to nature.

Moving the needle: Employing deep reinforcement learning to push the boundaries of coarse-grained vaccine models

Highly mutable infectious disease pathogens (hm-IDPs) such as HIV and influenza evolve faster than the human immune system can contain them, allowing them to circumvent traditional vaccination approaches and causing over one million deaths annually. Agent-based models can be used to simulate the complex interactions that occur between immune cells and hm-IDP-like proteins (antigens) during affinity maturation—the process by which antibodies evolve. Compared to existing experimental approaches, agent-based models offer a safe, low-cost, and rapid route to study the immune response to vaccines spanning a wide range of design variables. However, the highly stochastic nature of affinity maturation and vast sequence space of hm-IDPs render brute force searches intractable for exploring all pertinent vaccine design variables and the subset of immunization protocols encompassed therein. To address this challenge, we employed deep reinforcement learning to drive a recently developed agent-based model of affinity maturation to focus sampling on immunization protocols with greater potential to improve the chosen metrics of protection, namely the broadly neutralizing antibody (bnAb) titers or fraction of bnAbs produced. Using this approach, we were able to coarse-grain a wide range of vaccine design variables and explore the relevant design space. Our work offers new testable insights into how vaccines should be formulated to maximize protective immune responses to hm-IDPs and how they can be minimally tailored to account for major sources of heterogeneity in human immune responses and various socioeconomic factors. Our results indicate that the first 3 to 5 immunizations, depending on the metric of protection, should be specially tailored to achieve a robust protective immune response, but that beyond this point further immunizations require only subtle changes in formulation to sustain a durable bnAb response.
