Performance of the Landsat-Data Collection System in a Total System Context

The author has identified the following significant results. This experiment was, and continues to be, an integration of the LANDSAT-DCS with the data collection and processing system of the Geological Survey. Although an experimental demonstration, it was a successful integration of a satellite relay system that is capable of continental data collection, and an existing governmental nationwide operational data processing and distributing networks. The Survey's data processing system uses a large general purpose computer with insufficient redundancy for 24-hour a day, 7 day a week operation. This is significant, but soluble obstacle to converting the experimental integration of the system to an operational integration.

Development of a three-man preprototype CO2 collection subsystem for spacecraft application

Future long-duration manned space missions will require regenerable carbon dioxide (CO2) collection concepts such as the Electrochemical Depolarized CO2 Concentrator (EDC). A three-man-capacity preprototype CO2 Collection Subsystem (CS-3) is being developed for eventual flight demonstration as part of the Air Revitalization System (ARS) of the Regenerative Life Support Evaluation (RLSE) experiment. The CS-3 employs an EDC to concentrate CO2 from the low partial-pressure levels required of spacecraft atmospheres to high partial-pressure levels needed for oxygen (O2) recovery through CO2 reduction processes. The CS-3 is sized to remove a nominal 3.0 kg/day (6.6 lb/day) of the CO2 to maintain the CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) of the cabin atmosphere at 400 Pa (3 mm Hg) or less. This paper presents the preprototype design, configuration, operation, and projected performance characteristics.

Portable linear-focused solar thermal energy collecting system

A solar heat collection system is provided by utilizing a line-focusing device that is effectively a cylindrically curved concentrator within a protected environment formed by a transparent inflatable casing. A target, such as a fluid or gas carrying conduit is positioned within or near the casing containing the concentrator, at the line focus of the concentrator. The casing can be inflated at the site of use by a low pressure air supply to form a unitary light weight structure. The collector, including casing, concentrator and target, is readily transportable and can be used either at ground level or on rooftops. The inflatable concentrator can be replaced with a rigid metal or other concentrator while maintaining the novel advantages of the whole solar heat collection system.

Results of the second flight test of the Loran-C receiver/data collection system

The components of the Loran-C navigation system which were developed thus far are a phase-locked-loop receiver and a microcomputer development system. The microcomputer is being used as a means of testing and implementing software to handle sensor control and navigation calculations. Currently, the microcomputer is being used to collect and record data from the receiver in addition to development work. With these components, it was possible to record receiver data over a period of time and then reduce this data to obtain statistical information. It was particularly interesting to load the equipment developed in the laboratory into an aircraft and collect data while in flight. For initial flight tests, some important considerations were how well the entire system will perform in the field, signal strength levels while on the ground and in the air, the amount of noise present, changing of signal-to-noise ratio for various aircraft configurations and maneuvers, receiver overloading due to other equipment and antennas, and the overall usefulness of Loran-C as a navigation aid.

Determination of trace gases in learjet and U-2 whole air samples collected during the intertropical convergence zone experiment

The contribution of Washington State University (WSU) to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) study, conducted in the Panama Canal Zone in July 1977 is reported. The ITCZ program had the objective to study the meteorology and air chemistry to determine, if possible, the magnitude of injection of tropospheric air into the stratosphere in the ITCZ. WSU was responsible for two phases of the air chemistry program for the ITCZ study: (1) the collection of whole-air samples from ground level to 13.7 km using a Learjet as a sampling platform, and the analysis of the samples for selected halocarbons, C2 hydrocarbons, N2O, and SF6; and (2) the analysis for selected halocarbon species and N2O of low pressure whole-air samples, collected between 13.7 km and 21.3 km by a U-2 aircraft. The report is divided into separate sections describing the Learjet and the U-2 sampling methods, analytical methods, and results. Complete data tables for all samples analyzed are given.

Analysis of Meteorological Satellite location and data collection system concepts

A satellite system that employs a spaceborne RF interferometer to determine the location and velocity of data collection platforms attached to meteorological balloons is proposed. This meteorological advanced location and data collection system (MALDCS) is intended to fly aboard a low polar orbiting satellite. The flight instrument configuration includes antennas supported on long deployable booms. The platform location and velocity estimation errors introduced by the dynamic and thermal behavior of the antenna booms and the effects of the presence of the booms on the performance of the spacecraft's attitude control system, and the control system design considerations critical to stable operations are examined. The physical parameters of the Astromast type of deployable boom were used in the dynamic and thermal boom analysis, and the TIROS N system was assumed for the attitude control analysis. Velocity estimation error versus boom length was determined. There was an optimum, minimum error, antenna separation distance. A description of the proposed MALDCS system and a discussion of ambiguity resolution are included.

A study of universal modulation techniques applied to satellite data collection

A universal modulation and frequency control system for use with data collection platform (DCP) transmitters is examined. The final design discussed can, under software/firmwave control, generate all of the specific digital data modulation formats currently used in the NASA satellite data collection service and can simultaneously synthesize the proper RF carrier frequencies employed. A novel technique for DCP time and frequency control is presented. The emissions of NBS radio station WWV/WWVH are received, detected, and finally decoded in microcomputer software to generate a highly accurate time base for the platform; with the assistance of external hardware, the microcomputer also directs the recalibration of all DCP oscillators to achieve very high frequency accuracies and low drift rates versus temperature, supply voltage, and time. The final programmable DCP design also employs direct microcomputer control of data reduction, formatting, transmitter switching, and system power management.

A preliminary report on the achondrite meteorites in the 1979 U.S. Antarctic meteorite collection

Seventy-three meteorite samples were collected in Antarctica during the austral summer of 1979-80. A description is presented of the seven achondrites found among the meteorite samples. The achondrites described include an ALHA79017-polymict eucrite, an EETA79001-shergottite, an EETA79002-diogenite, an EETA79004-eucrite, an EETA79005-polymict eucrite, an EETA79006-howardite, and an EETA79011-polymict eucrite. The most exciting single aspect of the 1979 collection is undoubtedly the discovery of a new member of the shergottite group of meteorites. Sample EETA79001 is just under 8 kg and should thus provide ample material for detailed studies. In addition to the achondrites, a unique iron meteorite with abundant silicate (orthopyroxene) inclusions and a large diogenite is also discussed.
