Verification of the ENDF/B-VII.1 Based MC 2 -3 Library Rev.1

The MC 2 -3 code, developed by Argonne National Laboratory under the DOE-NE NEAMS program, is a multigroup cross section generation code for fast reactor applications. Last year, the ENDF/B-VII.0 (E70) MC 2 -3 library, which has been extensively used, verified, and validated over a long period, was intensively reverified and updated to support the commercial grade dedication (CGD) requirement of the TerraPower Natrium project. This year, the ENDF/B-VII.1 (E71) MC 2 -3 library, the preliminary version of which was generated several years ago, was regenerated and rigorously verified to support the Natrium project as well as the completion of verification of the E71 library. The E71 library was verified using the process developed during the verification of the E70 library, including comparisons of cross sections with the NJOY-generated cross sections, comparisons of the resolved resonance cross sections with those using the PEDNF library, and comparison of total cross sections with the sum of partial cross sections. Additional verifications were conducted to ensure that the benchmark problem solutions with the E71 library are reasonable compared to the corresponding Monte Carlo solutions. Furthermore, the E71 gamma library was generated, which includes data for prompt gamma, delayed gamma, and delayed beta as well as neutron and gamma heating. The gamma library was verified at the level of individual isotopes. The EBR-II core solutions from MC 2 -3/ DIF3D and MCNP were compared, demonstrating that those solutions in terms of k-effective and assembly powers were in good agreement.

Heat Pipe Cooled Microreactors

Microreactor technologies are required to provide reliable carbon-free power generation in remote applications. The heat pipe cooled microreactor concept in particular offers notable advantages due to the passive operation of heat pipes enabling increased reliability and simplicity in a more compact form factor. There is a significant need for experimental work to aid and expedite the deployment of heat pipe microreactors due to their unique technological characteristics. Thus, there has been increased interest in heat pipe experiments by numerous institutions in order to support these efforts. The present work is a comprehensive review of heat pipe experiments, describing instrumentation, methods, phenomena of interest, and recent developments. In addition, legacy work on the operation of high-temperature heat pipes under irradiation is reviewed and discussed. Furthermore, the verification and validation efforts for the flagship heat pipe simulation code Sockeye are reviewed and requirements for future experiments are outlined. Lastly, future directions are proposed for heat pipe experimentation.

A methodology for domain overlapping coupling of thermal-hydraulic systems

Multi-scale coupling has increasingly drawn attention as a promising approach for modeling thermal systems. Traditional system codes provide fast and robust predictions at the plant scale, while high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based tools resolve localized flow and heat transfer phenomena with greater accuracy. By combining these complementary strengths, co-simulations enable multi-scale analysis that would otherwise be computationally prohibitive for a standalone CFD code. Here, this work introduces a robust and problem-agnostic domain overlapping (DO) coupling between the system thermal-hydraulic (STH) code System Analysis Module (SAM) and the coarse-mesh CFD code Pronghorn. Both applications belong to the Comprehensive Reactor Analysis Bundle (BlueCRAB) code suite, a code suite in active development at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), tailored for multi-physics analysis of advanced reactors. Unlike previous approaches, BlueCRAB supports an agnostic interface between codes based on different fidelity, while its coupling formulation can address arbitrary flow geometries with multiple inlets and outlets in coupled components. The implemented method leads to consistent pressure drops, enthalpies, and scalar concentrations between coupled SAM and Pronghorn simulations. The methodology is demonstrated through two verification tests, which ensure the numerical consistency and conservation across the codes, and through one validation test against experimental data. The proposed problems explore different physical aspects inherent to thermal systems, with particular attention given to nuclear reactor analysis. These include buoyancy-driven flows, complex flow patterns, and setups with multiple inlets and outlets, representing challenges in advanced reactor applications.

MRT 7365 Power flow physics and key physics phenomena: EMPIRE verification suite

This milestone work baselines electromagnetic particle-in-cell capability of the EMPIRE plasma simulation code to model key processes germane to the physics of electrode plasmas arising in magnetically-insulated transmission lines operating at or near 20 MA. This evaluation is done so through the provision of benchmark verification problems designed to exercise the individual and combined physics models on a small-scale surrogate geometry for the final-feed-to-load region of the Z accelerator under representative operating conditions. In this report, we overview our test designs, and present a portfolio of simulation results along with performance assessments which altogether establish state-of-the-art. In particular, two main verification categories are covered this report: (1) Z-relevant desorption physics (Temkin isotherm), and (2) two approaches to simulate electrode plasma creation and dynamics (automatic creation versus self-consistent creation through direct simulation Monte Carlo collisions).

Sierra/SD – Verification Test Manual – 5.22

Verification and validation (V&V) of scientific computing programs are important at Sandia National Labs due to the expanding role of computational simulation in managing the United States nuclear stockpile. The complexities of structural response calculations used to analyze physical problems, the varieties of codes applied to the calculations, and the importance of accurate predictions when assessing field conditions demand confidence in the consistency and accuracy of computer codes. Confidence in the accuracy of the predictions arising from computer simulations must ultimately be gained through verification and validation. The Sierra salinas structural dynamics analysis code, Sierra/SD, is used at the DOE Laboratories, and in several DOD projects. The roles of Sierra/SD in the qualification of weapon systems and components for normal and hostile environments throughout the Stockpile-to-Target Sequence include to, • Redesign weapon components. • Certify weapon components and systems for target environments such as hypersonic vehicles. • Certify that components will survive the thermal mechanical shock loads associated with hostile environments. • Evaluate current stockpile issues, including issues associated with uncertainty quantification. • Address many other problems that are encountered in stockpile management. The Sierra/SD verification plan is described, and an evolving set of key verification tests are described in detail. The verification tests ensure the correctness of the mathematics and numerical algorithms associated with functionality describing engineering phenomena. Development is in accordance with a set of tailored Software Quality Engineering (SQE) practices. SQE practices guide the overall verification and validation effort.

Thermochemical Nonequilibrium Modeling in a Continuous-Galerkin, Finite-Element Framework

The presented work discusses the implementation, verification, and validation of Park's two-temperature model in a scalable, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code developed at the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The implementation of Park's two-temperature model was verified through 0D test cases involving an adiabatic reactor and a nitrogen thermal bath. The implementation was then validated through comparisons with other validated CFD codes and experimental data on a hypersonic cylinder and double cones. These are standard benchmark test cases for thermochemical non-equilibrium (TCNE) modeling, and all data are shared publicly. The verification and validation results showed that ORNL's in-house CFD code could model complex, high-speed flow problems with and without TCNE modeling. This work is essential for future research involving 3D shock wave/boundary layer interactions (SBLIs).

Verification of the sensitivity and uncertainty-based criticality safety validation techniques: ORNL’s SCALE case study

The use of sensitivity and uncertainty-based techniques has been well-developed in the neutronic community for criticality safety applications. Sensitivity techniques calculate the first-order relative variations in keff due to relative cross-section variations by isotope, reaction type, and incident neutron energy. The result is a vector of sensitivity coefficients which is folded with prior cross-section uncertainties to calculate the so-called similarity indices. Similarity indices are integral quantities which serve as useful mathematical measures for assessing the relevance of existing or new experiments to given application conditions, representing design systems for which the models are to be validated. Despite their importance for a wide range of validation activities, the peer-reviewed literature is non-existent on the development of rigorous verification analysis for their calculated values. Thus, this manuscript proposes a simple non-intrusive method to calculate similarity indices, serving as an independent verification tool for their evaluation. The manuscript derives the theoretical basis for the proposed verification analysis. Next, the verification analysis is applied to the ORNL’s SCALE code suite which employs adjoint-based methods to calculate similarity indices. Numerical experiments using a number of well-known benchmark experiments are employed to verify the calculation of the similarity indices.
