Analytical performance prediction for large antennas

The coupled free-free modes of the 55M LMSS antenna configuration are shown. They were determined using modal synthesis. Reflector modes clamped at the hub were calculated adopting the efficient cyclic symmetry technique. Similarly, clamped hub modes of the offset boom structure were calculated. The modes of the two substructures were then combined through the process of modal synthesis on the assumption that the interface at the hub structure is rigid thus satisfying statically determinate matching conditions. For attitude control purposes, only modes associated with symmetric components zero and one involve net motions of the center of gravity of the reflector. This condition restricts the set of admissible eigenfunctions for modal synthesis. Modes with symmetric components higher than one are excited only by forces acting on the ribs. These modes are totally uncoupled from the boom dynamics.

Precision heat forming of tetrafluoroethylene tubing

An invention that provides a method of altering the size of tetrafluoroethylene tubing which is only available in limited combination of wall thicknesses and diameter are discussed. The method includes the steps of sliding the tetrafluoroethylene tubing onto an aluminum mandrel and clamping the ends of the tubing to the mandrel by means of clamps. The tetrafluorethylene tubing and mandrel are then placed in a supporting coil which with the mandrel and tetrafluorethylene tubing are then positioned in a insulated steel pipe which is normally covered with a fiber glass insulator to smooth out temperature distribution therein. The entire structure is then placed in an event which heats the tetrafluorethylene tubing which is then shrunk by the heat to the outer dimension of the aluminum mandrel. After cooling the aluminum mandrel is removed from the newly sized tetrafluorethylene tubing by a conventional chemical milling process.

An equation for bolt clampup relaxation in transient environments

An equation for bolt clampup relaxation for transient temperature-moisture (T-M) conditions was derived starting with a relaxation equation for steady-state conditions, and then using an incremental time approach that exploits the superposition principle for linear viscoelasticity. The resulting equation uses the initial T-M condition (at the time of clamping), the T-M history after clamping, and elastic clampup coefficients for temperature and moisture changes. For a given material and joint configuration, the clampup coefficients are constants that can be calculated by elastic analyses. The clampup equation was used to calculate the changes in clampup occurring in a T300/5208 graphite/epoxy joint exposed to a one-year history of temperature and moisture. Two cases were considered: one was a dry joint exposed to a relatively humid environment and the other was a nearly saturated joint exposed to an arid environment.

Open ended tubing cutters

A self clamping cutting tool which includes a handle attached to a C-shaped housing is described. Rotatably mounted within the housing is a C-shaped tool body carrying a set of clamping rolls, two support rolls, and an edged cutting roll (64). The support rolls are disposed to one side of the axis of a pipe and the cutting roll is disposed to the other side of a pipe axis so that these rolls contact a pipe at three circumferential points. Cutter advancing apparatus advance the cutting roll toward the support rollers. The support rolls and cutting roll are rotatable independently of the C-shaped housing. A one way ratchet mechanism disposed between the C-shaped housing and the C-shaped tool body permits operation by movement in one rotational direction about the pipe axis.

The role of peel stresses in cyclic debonding

When an adhesively bonded joint is undergoing cyclic loading, one of the possible damage modes that occurs is called cyclic debonding - progressive separation of the adherends by failure of the adhesive bond under cyclic loading. In most practical structures, both peel and shear stresses exist in the adhesive bonding during cyclic loading. The results of an experimental and analytical study to determine the role of peel stresses on cyclic debonding in a mixed mode specimen are presented. Experimentally, this was done by controlling the forces that create the peel stresses by applying a clamping force to oppose the peel stresses. Cracked lap shear joints were chosen for this study. A finite element analysis was developed to assess the effect of the clamping force on the strain energy release rates due to shear and peel stresses. The results imply that the peel stress is the principal stress causing cyclic debonding.

High-resolution imaging with a two-dimensional resistive anode photon counter

A method to achieve high spatial resolution readout of individual photoelectron events using microchannel plates and a resistive anode is presented. A clamped pair of microchannel plates is used, followed by a gap and a clamped triplet of microchannel plates in cascade to achieve a high stable electron gain of 3 x 10 to the 7th. The gain allows the position determination of each photoelectron event with a very high signal-to-noise ratio. A model consisting of a windowless vacuum-ultraviolet image sensor is presented to demonstrate 500 x 500 pixel images of 50 micron FWHM over a 25-mm circular field of view. The detector offers sufficient speed, sensitivity and resolution for a variety of applications, and the mount design is compatible with planar, remotely-processed, proximity-focused photocathodes.

Analysis of Barkhausen noise to assess shrink fit stresses

The possible application of Barkhausen Noise Analysis to assess shrink fit stresses in steel bushings was investigated. Ten specimens of four different size NAS steel bushings were used in experiments to determine the relationship between the Barkhausen signal amplitude and the hoop-stress in the bushings. This relationship was investigated for specimens which were loaded by a simple clamping fixture and specimens subjected to actual thermal interference fits. The results show that while the relationship of Barkhausen signal amplitude to hoop stress is predictable for specimens loaded by the simple clamping fixture, the relationship was less predictable for actual thermal fit bushings. The variation in results could possibly be due to variable levels of axial stress produced by the differential thermal expansion of the steel and aluminum.

The design, fabrication and delivery of a spacelab neutral buoyancy Instrument Pointing System (IPS) mockup

Underwater simulations of EVA contingency operations such as manual jettison, payload disconnect, and payload clamp actuation were used to define crew aid needs and mockup pecularities and characteristics to verify the validity of simulation using the trainer. A set of mockup instrument pointing system tests was conducted and minor modifications and refinements were made. Flight configuration struts were tested and verified to be operable by the flight crew. Tasks involved in developing the following end items are described: IPS gimbal system, payload, and payload clamp assembly; the igloos (volumetric); spacelab pallets, experiments, and hardware; experiment, and hardware; experiment 7; and EVA hand tools, support hardware (handrails and foot restraints). The test plan preparation and test support are also covered.

Study of NSI and related cable performance during tests performed in the NASA Hot Gas Facility

Some seven different configurations of the NSI and other cables were tested in the NASA-MSFC Hot Gas Facility (HGF). The tests were conducted to study what happens to the cables when they are exposed to hot flow as was the case in the first two Shuttle flights, the STS-1 and STS-2. Protection of these components is vital for various functions especially to attain proper nozzle separation. The tests in the HGF demonstrated the severity of the aerodynamic forces combined with aero heating environment on the test cables and helped, in general, to evaluate the cable wrap materials and cable mounting hardware and technique. Blastape 2 cable wrap which is adequate for thermal protection of the cables must be properly clamped at its ends. The nylon clamps (or ties) used to secure cables to metal components inside the skirt could not withstand the heating. K5NA closeout material used on the outboard surface of the aft skirt when troweled over the cables performed excellently in protecting the cables and mounting hardware.

A wide bandwidth electrostatic field sensor for lightning research

Data obtained from UHF Radar observation of direct-lightning strikes to the NASA F-106B airplane have indicated that most of the 690 strikes acquired during direct-strike lightning tests were triggered by the aircraft. As an aid in understanding the triggered lightning process, a wide bandwidth electric field measuring system was designed for the F-106B by implementing a clamped-detection signal processing concept originated at the Air Force Cambridge Research Lab in 1953. The detection scheme combines the signals from complementary stator pairs clamped to zero volts at the exact moment when each stator pair is maximally shielded by the rotor, a process that restores the dc level lost by the charge amplifier. The new system was implemented with four shutter-type field mills located at strategic points on the airplane. The bandwidth of the new system was determined in the laboratory to be from dc to over 100 Hz, whereas past designs had upper limits of 10 Hz to 100 Hz. To obtain the undisturbed electric field vector and total aircraft charge, the airborne field mill system is calibrated by using techniques involving results from ground and flight calibrations of the F-106B, laboratory tests of a metallized model, and a finite-difference time-domain electromagnetic computer code.

Device Applies Films to Optical Elements

Clamping device applies protective or antireflective dielectric coating to lenses or other optical elements. Alternative version of device applies thin sheet of dielectric film to ring or stretches it for clamping in holder to form pellicle or beam splitter. Defects avoided by new apparatus, which uniformly stretches dielectric films in radial direction and creates vacuum between them before thermally bonded to optical element.

On incorporating damping and gravity effects in models of structural dynamics of the SCOLE configuration

The damping for structural dynamic models of flexible spacecraft is usually ignored and then added after modal frequencies and mode shapes are calculated. It is common practice to assume the same damping ratio for all modes, although it is known that damping due to bending and that due to torsion are sometimes ignored. Two methods of including damping in the modeling process from its onset are examined. First, the partial derivative equations of motion are analyzed for a pinned-pinned beam with damping. The end conditions are altered to handle bodies with mass and inertia for the Spacecraft Control Laboratory Experiment (SCOLE) configuration. Second, a massless beam approximation is used for the modes with low frequencies, and a clamped-clamped system is used to approximate the modes for arbitrarily high frequency. The model is then modified to include gravity effects and is compared with experimental results.

A subsized fatigue specimen

A subsized fatigue specimen has been designed to overcome the difficulty of machining a full-sized specimen from cast superalloy components. A finite element analysis confirmed that the stress was maximum at the gauge section for any given set of clamping and tensile loads, and that the stresses developed due to clamping forces were negligible compared with those due to tensile or compressive loads. Fatigue data generated using subsized specimens of AISI 4130 steel, 2024-T4 aluminum alloy and 6Al-4V titanium alloy compared well with those available in the literature for full-sized specimens.
