Surrogate modelling the Baryonic Universe II: On forward modelling the colours of individual and populations of galaxies

ABSTRACT Among the properties shaping the light of a galaxy, the star formation history (SFH) is one of the most challenging to model due to the variety of correlated physical processes regulating star formation. In this work, we leverage the stellar population synthesis model fsps, together with SFHs predicted by the hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG and the empirical model universemachine, to study the impact of star formation variability on galaxy colours. We start by introducing a model-independent metric to quantify the burstiness of a galaxy formation model, and we use this metric to demonstrate that universemachine predicts SFHs with more burstiness relative to IllustrisTNG. Using this metric and principal component analysis, we construct families of SFH models with adjustable variability, and we show that the precision of broad-band optical and near-infrared colours degrades as the level of unresolved short-term variability increases. We use the same technique to demonstrate that variability in metallicity and dust attenuation presents a practically negligible impact on colours relative to star formation variability. We additionally provide a model-independent fitting function capturing how the level of unresolved star formation variability translates into imprecision in predictions for galaxy colours; our fitting function can be used to determine the minimal SFH model that reproduces colours with some target precision. Finally, we show that modelling the colours of individual galaxies with per cent-level precision demands resorting to complex SFH models, while producing precise colours for galaxy populations can be achieved using models with just a few degrees of freedom.

The completed SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: cosmological implications from multitracer BAO analysis with galaxies and voids

We construct cosmic void catalogues with the dive void finder upon SDSS BOSS DR12 and eBOSS DR16 galaxy samples with BAO reconstruction, and perform a joint BAO analysis using different types of galaxies and the corresponding voids. The BAO peak is evident for the galaxy–galaxy, galaxy–void, and void–void correlation functions of all data sets, including the ones cross-correlating LRG and ELG samples. Two multitracer BAO fitting schemes are tested, one combining the galaxy and void correlation functions with a weight applied to voids, and the other using a single BAO dilation parameter for all clustering measurements. Both methods produce consistent results with mock catalogues, and on average ~10 per cent improvements of the BAO statistical uncertainties are observed for all samples, compared to the results from galaxies alone. By combining the clustering of galaxies and voids, the uncertainties of BAO measurements from the SDSS data are reduced by 5–15 per cent, yielding 0.9 per cent, 0.8 per cent, 1.1 per cent, 2.3 per cent, and 2.9 per cent constraints on the distance $D_{_{\rm V}}(z)$, at effective redshifts 0.38, 0.51, 0.70, 0.77, and 0.85, respectively. When combined with BAO measurements from SDSS MGS, QSO, and Lyα samples, as well as the BBN results, we obtain $H_0 = 67.58 \pm 0.91\, {\rm km}\, {\rm s}^{-1}\, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, Ω m = 0.290 ± 0.015, and $\Omega _\Lambda h^2 = 0.3241 \pm 0.0079$ in the flat-ΛCDM framework, where the 1σ uncertainties are around 6 per cent, 6 per cent, and 17 per cent smaller respectively, compared to constraints from the corresponding anisotropic BAO measurements without voids and LRG–ELG cross-correlations.

Bound states of Ω baryons in light nuclei

Here, we investigate bound states of light Ω 3⁢𝑥 clusters (𝑥=𝑠,𝑐), motivated by the Ω 3⁢𝑠 ⁢𝑁 potential recently developed by the HAL QCD collaboration. To regularize this potential, we remove the deeply attractive core at 𝑟 < 0.4 fm and parametrize the long-range component (𝑟 > 0.4 fm) using a two-range Gaussian form. This procedure preserves the relevant two-body bound-state energy while having a negligible effect on the Ω 3⁢𝑠⁢ 𝑁⁢𝑁 and Ω 3⁢𝑠⁢ Ω 3⁢𝑠 ⁢𝑁 systems. An effective Ω 3⁢𝑠 ⁢𝛼 potential is then constructed by fitting a two-range Gaussian function to the long-range component of the folding potential, enabling calculations of the bound-state energies of the Ω 3⁢𝑠⁢ 𝛼, Ω 3⁢𝑠⁢ 𝛼⁢𝛼, and Ω 3⁢𝑠 ⁢Ω 3⁢𝑠 ⁢𝛼 systems. The regularization procedure leads to a substantial reduction in bound-state energies compared to those obtained with the original potential. We further extend the analysis to Ω 3⁢𝑐 -cluster systems by introducing an Ω 3⁢𝑐 ⁢𝑁 interaction, derived by comparing the existing Ω 3⁢𝑠⁢ Ω 3⁢𝑠 and Ω 3⁢𝑐 ⁢Ω 3⁢𝑐 potentials. Our results suggest that several parametrizations predict bound states in Ω 3⁢𝑐 -containing clusters. Finally, the Ω 3⁢𝑠 ⁢Ω 3⁢𝑠 interaction is described using a contactlike potential approach, motivated by the effective field theory.

Baryon–antibaryon photoproduction cross sections off the proton

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has observed 𝑝⁢$\overline{p}$ and, for the first time, Λ$\overlineΛ$ and 𝑝$\overlineΛ$ photoproduction from a proton target at photon energies up to 11.6 GeV. The angular distributions are forward peaked for all produced pairs, consistent with Regge-like 𝑡-channel exchange. Asymmetric wide-angle antibaryon distributions show the presence of additional processes. In a phenomenological model, we find consistency with a double-𝑡-channel exchange process where antibaryons are created only at the middle vertex. The model matches all observed distributions with a small number of free parameters. In the hyperon channels, we observe a clear distinction between photoproduction of the Λ$\overlineΛ$ and 𝑝$\overlineΛ$ systems but general similarity to the 𝑝$\overline{p}$ system. We report both total cross sections and cross sections differential with respect to momentum transfer and the invariant masses of the created particle pairs. No narrow resonant structures were found in these reaction channels. The suppression of 𝑠$\overline{s}$ quark pairs relative to 𝑑$\overline{d}$ quark pairs is similar to what has been seen in other reactions.

Relativistic hybrid stars with sequential first-order phase transitions and heavy-baryon envelopes

We compute the mass, radius and tidal deformability of stars containing phase transitions from hadronic to quark phase(s). These quantities are computed for three types of hadronic envelopes: purely nuclear, hyperonic, and Δ-resonance--hyperon admixed matter. We consider either a single first-order phase transition to a quark phase with a maximally stiff equation of state (EOS) or two sequential first-order phase transitions mimicking a transition from hadronic to a quark matter phase followed by a second phase transition to another quark phase. We explore the parameter space which produces low-mass twin and triplet configurations where equal-mass stars have substantially different radii and tidal deformabilities. We demonstrate that while for purely hadronic stiff EOS the obtained maximum mass is inconsistent with the upper limit on this quantity placed by GW170817, the inclusion of the hyperonic and Δ-resonance degrees of freedom, as well as the deconfinement phase transition at sufficiently low density, produces a configuration of stars consistent with this limit. The obtained hybrid star configurations are in the mass range relevant for the interpretation of the GW170817 event. We compare our results for the tidal deformability with the limits inferred from GW170817 showing that the onset of non-nucleonic phases, such as Δ-resonance--hyperon admixed phase and/or the quark phase(s), are favored by this data if the nuclear EOS is stiff. Also, we show that low-mass twins and especially triplets proliferate the number of combinations of possible types of stars that can undergo a merger event, the maximal number being six in the case of triplets. The prospects for uncovering the first-order phase transition(s) to and in quark matter via measurements of tidal deformabilities in merger events are discussed.
