Thermal barrier coating life prediction model development

The objective of this program is to establish a methodology to predict Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) life on gas turbine engine components. The approach involves experimental life measurement coupled with analytical modeling of relevant degradation modes. The coating being studied is a flight qualified two layer system, designated PWA 264, consisting of a nominal ten mil layer of seven percent yttria partially stabilized zirconia plasma deposited over a nominal five mil layer of low pressure plasma deposited NiCoCrAlY. Thermal barrier coating degradation modes being investigated include: thermomechanical fatigue, oxidation, erosion, hot corrosion, and foreign object damage.

Mechanisms of thermal barrier coating degradation and failure

The objectives and initial results of a Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) Life Prediction Model Development Program are described. The goals of this program are to: identify and understand TBC failure modes; generate quantitative TBC life data; and develop and verify a TBC life prediction model. The coating being studied is a two layer thermal barrier system incorporating a nominal ten mil outer layer of seven percent yttria partially stabilized zirconia plasma deposited over an inner layer of highly oxidation resistant low pressure plasma sprayed NiCrAlY bond coating. This coating currently is in flight service on turbine vane platforms in the JT-9D and PW2037 engines and is bill-of- material on turbine vane airfoils in the advanced PW4000 and IAE V2500 engines. Effort currently is in progress on the first task, which involves the identification and understanding of TBC failures. Five modes of coating damage were considered: thermomechanical ceramic failure; oxidative bond coat failure; hot corrosion; foreign object damage (FOD); and erosion.

The effect of oxidation on the high heat flux behavior of a thermal barrier coating

The effect of oxidation on the high heat flux behavior of a thermal barrier coating was evaluated by cyclically exposing preoxidized specimens to a 3000 C nitrogen plasma. The thermal barrier coatings consisted of a 0.025 cm layer of air-plasma-sprayed ZrO2-7 percent Y2O3 and a 0.012 cm layer of low pressure-plasma-sprayed NiCoCrAlY applied over 0.13 cm diameter B1900+Hf cylindrical substrates. A gradient of 800 C is produced across the ceramic layer in each 0.5 second exposure. This is much more severe than the gradient encountered on a gas turbine engine. Prior to exposure, the specimens were preoxidized at 1200 C for time from 0 to 20 hours. These coatings were found to be tolerant to the high heat flux plasma flame for all but the most severe preoxidations. However, life degraded rapidly for preoxidation times in excess of 15 hours at 1200 C. A log-log plot of cycles-to-failure vs estimated oxidative weight gain yield a straight or nearly straight line, and this line could be rationalized using an oxidation-based model that was developed previously for low heat flux applications.

Aluminum oxide barriers in MCrAlY superalloy systems

An investigation was made of sputtered aluminum oxide diffusion barriers to protect gas turbine engine blade and vane alloys from their coatings. MAR M200 + Hf coated with sputtered NiCoCrAlY and MAR M509 coated with sputtered FeCrAlY were obtained both with and without 1 and 2 micron sputtered Al2O3 barrier layers. Electron dispersive X-ray analysis was used to determine the concentration profiles of as-received and heat treated samples.

Microlaminate composites: An alternate approach to thermal barrier coatings

Ceramic thermal barrier coatings suffer from a major drawback, i.e., brittle behavior. An alternate approach is microlaminate composite coatings consisting of alternate layers of metal and oxide. As the thickness of the individual laminae decrease while keeping the total thickness of the coating constant, the thermal conductivity drops markedly. Data on the Fe-Cu system will be presented. A model is proposed for an MCrAlY-Al2O3 microlaminate coating for thermal barriers. The methods of fabrication will also be discussed.

Increased effective barrier heights in Schottky diodes by molecular-beam epitaxy of CoSi2 and Ga-doped Si on Si(111)

Increasing the effective Schottky-barrier height of epitaxial CoSi2/Si(111) diodes by the use of thin, highly doped Si layers in close proximity to the metal-semiconductor interface has been studied. Intrinsic Si, Si doped by coevaporation of Ga, and epitaxial CoSi2 layers have all been grown in the same molecular-beam epitaxy system. Current-voltage and photoresponse characterization yield barrier heights ranging from 0.61 eV for a sample with no p(+) layer to 0.89 eV for a sample with a 20-nm-thick p(+) layer. These results are compared to theoretical values based on a one-dimensional solution of Poisson's equation under the depletion approximation.

The effect of higher than double excitations on the F + H2 to FH + H barrier

The averaged coupled-pair functional (ACPF) method is used to calculate the barrier height and saddle-point geometry for the reaction F + H2 yields FH + H. The theoretical basis of the calculation method is outlined, and results for both 7-electron and 9-electron correlations are presented in tables and shown to be consistent with a barrier of 1.65 kcal/mol. The ACPF results are found to be in good agreement with the Davidson-corrected multireference CI computations of Bauschlicher et al. (1988) and with the results obtained by Scuseria and Schaefer (1988) using a CI method which accounts for all single, double, triple, and quadruple excitations.

Microlaminate composites as thermal barrier coatings

Thick multiple-layered Ni/NiCoCrAlY and Ti/CoCrAlY microlaminate composites are explored as thermal barrier coatings. The method of fabrication of these laminates and the measurement technique used to determine thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of these coatings are discussed. Results indicate that the thermal conductivity of the laminate composite perpendicular to the laminate plane decreases with increasing number of interfaces; the drop in thermal conductivity is likely to be associated with interfaces which act as a barrier to the transfer of heat across them; the variation in thermal conductivity with the number of interfaces is not linear.

Self-Aligned Guard Rings For Schottky-Barrier Diodes

Proposed self-aligned guard ring increases active area of Schottky-barrier infrared detector. Concept developed for silicide Schottky-barrier diodes in which platinum silicide or iridium silicide Schottky-contacts provide cutoff wavelengths of about 6 or 10 micrometers. Grid of silicon dioxide doped with phosphorus etched on silicon wafer, and phosphorus from grid diffused into substrate, creating n-type guard rings. Silicide layers formed in open areas of grid. Overlap of guard rings and silicide layers small.

Two-layer thermal barrier coating. I - Effects of composition and temperature on oxidation behavior and failure

The effects of 21 bond and 2 ceramic coating compositions on the specific mass gain, internal crack location at failure, and life of a two-layer thermal barrier coating (TBC) were studied by cyclic testing in a furnace. MAR-M 200 + Hf alloy specimens were completely coated with bond and thermal barrier (ceramic) coatings. Both coatings were applied by air plasma spray deposition. Cyclic test data were obtained at 1110, 1160, and 1220 deg C. The data show that the specific mass gain and the TBC life are significantly affected by the composition of the bond coating and the temperature and only slightly affected by the composition of the ceramic coating.

Ir/IrSi3/Si Schottky-Barrier Infrared Detector

Quantum efficiency increased. Proposed Schottky-barrier infrared detector has double metallic layer of Ir and IrSi3 instead of single metallic layer of Ir, IrSi, or IrSi3. Offers advantages of both relatively high infrared absorption in thin film of Ir and stability and reproducibility of layer of IrSi3 in contact with Si. Also serves as barrier to chemical reactions between Ir overlayer and Si substrate. Detectors used to form focal-plane array integrated with charge-coupled-device-addressing and image-processing circuitry.

Lateral tunneling through voltage-controlled barriers

The paper reports on a detailed experimental investigation of lateral tunneling between electrodes of a two-dimensional electron gas separated by the voltage-controlled barrier of a nanometer Schottky gate. The experimental data are modeled using the WKB method to calculate the tunneling probability of electrons through a barrier whose shape is determined from a solution of the two-dimensional Poisson equation. This model is in excellent agreement with the experimental data over a two order of magnitude range of current.

Porous Barrier To Flow Of Hot Gas

Porous, ropelike barrier prevents recirculating flow of hot, hydrogen-rich steam from reaching nickel-alloy bellows seal located deep in gap in wall of combustion chamber. Proven successful protecting bellows seal at different values of protrusion of coolant tubes giving rise to recirculating hot flow. Similar barriers help block deleterious recirculating flow of hot gases in other combustion chambers such as furnaces and turbomachines.

Anomalous capacitance of quantum well double-barrier diodes

The S-parameters of several different quantum well double barrier diodes have been measured. A technique has been developed for measuring whisker contacted diodes with an HP 8510B automatic network analyzer. Special coaxial mounts using K-connectors were designed to enable measurements up to 20 GHz. The voltage-dependent conductance and capacitance were derived from the measured reflection coefficient of each device. The C/V characteristics were observed to exhibit an anomalous increase at voltages corresponding to the negative differential resistance region (NDR). These are the first reported S-parameter measurements in the negative differential resistance region of quantum well double barrier diodes. A theory is presented that explains, in part, the observed results.

Total quality management: Strengths and barriers to implementation and cultural adaptation

NASA/Langley Research Center (LaRC) is in the process of implementing Total Quality Management (TQM) throughout the organization in order to improve productivity and make the Center an even better place to work. The purpose of this project was to determine strengths and barriers to TQM being implemented and becoming a part of the organizational culture of the Human Resources Management Division (HRMD) at Langley. The target population for this project was both supervisory and nonsupervisory staff of the HMRD. In order to generate data on strengths and barriers to TQM implementation and cultural adaptation, a modified nominal group technique was used.
