Lorentz-invariant formulation of Cherenkov radiation by tachyons

Previous treatments of Cherenkov radiation, electromagnetic and gravitational, by tachyons were in error because the prescription employed to cut off the divergent integral over frequency is not a Lorentz invariant procedure. The resulting equation of motion for the tachyon is therefore not covariant. The proper procedure requires an extended, deformable distribution of charge or mass and yields a particularly simple form for the tachyon's world line, one that could be deduced from simple invariance considerations. It is shown that Cherenkov radiation by tachyons implys their ultimate annihilation with an antitachyon and demonstrates a disturbing property of tachyons, namely the impossibility of specifying arbitrary Cauchy data even in a purely classical theory.

The process of crater removal in the lunar maria, part P

Near-terminator photography from the Apollo 14 and 15 missions is used as a basis to evaluate the processes by which craters disappear from the lunar surface. From observations and analyses it is concluded that: (1) The erosion of lunar craters in the size range of 10 m to 1 km is effected principally by small impacts producing minute changes in crater form up to the point where the crater is worn to an interior slope of approximately 1 degree. Below that slope, the annihilation process is dominated by the formation of younger overlapping craters. (2) The distribution of shapes of craters in this size range can be explained as resulting from impact generated processes.

Solar X-rays and particle acceleration

The process of solar flare acceleration of interplanetary particles, as measured by the fifth orbiting solar observatory, is explained. Data show the acceleration proceeds in two stages: (1) particle acceleration by induced electric fields arising from annihilating magnetic fields at the beginning stages of flares, and (2) a Fermi acceleration mechanism operating in a shock front produced by the flare.

Possible evidence for the existence of antimatter on a cosmological scale in the universe.

Initial results of a detailed calculation of the cosmological gamma-ray spectrum from matter-antimatter annihilation in the universe. The similarity between the calculated spectrum and the present observations of the gamma-ray background spectrum above 1 MeV suggests that such observations may be evidence of the existence of antimatter on a large scale in the universe.

The polymorphic and mesomorphic behavior of four esters of cholesterol.

The techniques of differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray powder diffractometry, and positron annihilation have been used to study the polymorphic and mesomorphic behavior of the following esters of cholesterol: cholesteryl formate, cholesteryl butyrate, cholesteryl benzoate, and cholesteryl cinnamate. Each of these compounds exhibits a single mesophase of the cholesteric type. The solid phase formed from the melt for each ester was observed to be structurally different from the solid phase obtained from solution. Solvents from which the solution-grown samples were crystallized were as follows: cholesteryl formate and cholesteryl butyrate from acetone, cholesteryl benzoate from benzene, and cholesteryl cinnamate from 2-butanone.

Joule-heating power dissipation in a type-II superconductor tube.

The theoretical analysis of the Joule-heating power density in a specific hollow cylinder of a NbZr superconductor is presented. It is seen that the power density, which is the primary source of internal heating neglecting localized annihilation heating, can have a very complicated behavior, especially in the circular region. Rough estimates of the relative temperature changes are made, and the locations at which instabilities are more likely to initiate are considered.

Nuclear gamma rays from solar flares

The theory of gamma ray line emission from solar flares is reviewed and revised. It is shown that the recently observed (Chupp et al., 1972) line emissions at 0.5, 2.2, 4.4 and 6.1 MeV are due to positron annihilation, deuterium deexcitation following neutron capture on hydrogen, and the deexcitation of excited states in carbon and oxygen. From the observed relative line intensities it is possible to determine the spectrum of accelerated protons in the flare region. This spectrum is found to be very similar to that the charged particles from the flare observed near earth. The total numbers of protons at the sun is deduced from the observed absolute line intensities for various interaction models. It is found that if the protons at the sun have a spectrum which is an exponential in rigidity, the total energy in protons is a few times 10 to the 28th power ergs if the gamma rays are produced by protons moving down into the sun; and about 10 to the 30th power ergs if the gamma rays are produced at the site of the acceleration.

Matter-antimatter Cosmology

The possible existence of antimatter on a large scale in the universe is evaluated. As a starting point, an attempt was made to understand the origin of matter as being essentially analogous to the origin of backgound thermal radiation. Several theories and models are examined, with particular emphasis on nucleon-antinucleon interactions at intermediate energies. Data also cover annihilation interaction with the matter-antimatter boundary to produce the essential fluid motion known as coalesence.

Distortion of the Microwave Blackbody Background Radiation Implied by the Baryon-symmetric Cosmology of Omnes and the Galaxy Formation Theory of Stecker and Puget

Theories on the evolution of the universe are evaluated. Particular attention was given to Omnes and Stecker and Puget theories. Data cover distortion of the microwave black body background energy distribution at red shifts between 10,000 and 1.000, and black body distortion due to antimatter and annihilation reactions.

Antimatter in the Universe?

The use of gamma rays, cosmic rays, annihilation reactions, and interstellar gas reactions to prove antimatter is present in the universe is discussed.

Diffuse cosmic gamma rays - Present status of theory and observations.

Theoretical interpretations are proposed for recent positive diffuse gamma-ray flux findings with energy measurements up to the 100 MeV range. Several models of isotropic gamma ray production are considered. Diagrams are plotted to compare the observed background spectrum with (1) an electron bremsstrahlung model, (2) a two-component model involving neutral pion production and decay in cosmic-ray interactions at redshifts up to 100, and (3) a theoretical model involving matter-antimatter annihilation. New results on the diffuse flux from the galaxy are viewed as supporting the pion-decay origin hypothesis for gamma-radiation above 100 MeV.

Gamma ray and neutron measurements and their relation to the solar flare problem.

In order to interpret recent observations of solar gamma ray lines from OSO-7, we consider the possible nuclear reactions which can occur and assess their relative importance in the solar environment. This analysis shows that about 3 times 10 to the 32nd power protons (energy greater than 30 MeV) must have been produced during the initial phase of the flare on Aug. 4, 1972. The ability to determine the temperature in the solar region where the positrons annihilate has been estimated from the 0.51 MeV line width, giving a temperature there of less than 7 million deg K. The major conclusions from these observations are discussed and some outstanding problems are mentioned. Finally, requirements for the next generation of solar gamma ray and neutron experiments are discussed.

Positronium origin of 476 keV galactic feature.

Leventhal noticed that the gamma-ray spectrum due to the annihilation of positronium, which consists of two 511 keV photons from the singlet state and three photons from the triplet state, produces a spectral feature with an apparent peak at an energy less than 511 keV when viewed with a gamma-ray telescope having a Gaussian energy resolution. He calculated that the observed peak will lie at 490 keV. The author calculates that if the positronium spectrum sits atop a steeply falling continuum due to other sources, then the apparent peak can easily fall near 476 keV where it was observed. It is shown that explosive nucleosynthesis is a plausible source of the positrons.

Spin contamination in unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations.

Several pi-electron doublets are treated by both the unrestricted Hartree-Fock method and the restricted approximation of Longuet-Higgins and Pople. For two of the molecules, which contain oxygen heteroatoms, serious spin contamination occurs in the UHF wavefunctions, and this negates the usefulness of the single annihilation procedure that is often used for spin-density calculations. The restricted approximation provides a convenient alternative, especially because configuration interaction is easily taken into account.
