Large eddy simulation of lean blow-off in swirl-stabilized flame with the subgrid dissipation concept

The lean blow-off mechanism of the premixed swirl flame is numerically investigated by large eddy simulation (LES) with the subgrid dissipation concept (SDC) combustion model. Three simulated cases cover stable, near blow-off, and transient conditions. Compared with the experiment, the LES-SDC approach captures the flow and combustion features for stable and near blow-off conditions. More importantly, the predictions of the blowoff procedure and duration agree satisfactorily with the experiment, indicating that the LES-SDC approach is a promising tool for predicting strong, unsteady turbulent combustion processes. Further, the numerical results are used to investigate the blow-off mechanism. Two stages in the blow-off procedure are specified. The first is the necking and extinction of the downstream flame surface, and the second is the shrinking of the upstream flame surface. The blow-off mechanism is well explained by the theory of stretched flame extinction. At the end of the recirculation zone, the large negative radial velocity pushes the flame to the central line. The combustion process here can be abstracted as the stretched counter-flame of the reactant-reactant configuration. The excessive flame stretch dominates the flame extinction and triggers the blow-off event. The upstream flame resists the intense stretch with the help of hot product recirculation, and the combustion here can be idealized as the counter-flame of the reactant-product configuration. The alignment of the temperature gradient and flow velocity, together with the excessive stretch, clearly indicates the tendency of flame local extinction. A Damköhler number-based blow-off criterion is raised from the mean flow strain rate and laminar flame bulk extinction strain rate.

Monte Carlo simulation of order-disorder transition in refractory high entropy alloys: A data-driven approach

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are a series of novel materials that demonstrate many exceptional mechanical properties. To understand the origin of these attractive properties, it is important to investigate the thermodynamics and elucidate the evolution of various chemical phases. In this work, we introduce a machine learning approach to construct the effective Hamiltonian and study the thermodynamics of HEAs through canonical Monte Carlo simulation. The main characteristic of our method is to use pairwise interactions between atoms as the machine learning features and systematically improve the representativeness of the dataset using active learning from the Monte Carlo samples. We find this method produces highly robust and accurate effective Hamiltonians that give less than 0.1 mRy test error for all the three refractory HEAs: MoNbTaW, MoNbTaVW, and MoNbTaTiW. Using replica exchange to speed up the MC simulation, we calculated the specific heats and short-range order parameters in a wide range of temperatures. For all the studied materials, we find there are two major order-disorder transitions occurring respectively at T 1 and T 2 , where T 1 is near room temperature but T 2 is much higher. Further, we demonstrate that the transition at T 1 is caused by W and Nb while the one at T 2 is caused by the other elements. By comparing with experiments, the results demonstrate that the order-disorder transitions have a profound impact on the strength and ductility of HEAs.

Tree-level carbon stock estimations across diverse species using multi-source remote sensing integration

Forests are critical carbon sinks, and remote sensing has been increasingly widely used for forest monitoring and biomass estimations. However, species-specific tree-level studies remain limited. In this study, we demonstrated the feasibility of integrating UAV-based LiDAR with high-resolution optical satellite imagery (0.5 m) to estimate biomass for individual trees across different species. The proposed method accurately estimated biomass for 53 trees (R² = 0.82, rRMSE = 0.44), with species-specific datasets, showing an average 25.2% increase in R² and a 14.8% reduction in rRMSE. A novel vegetation index combining forest structure parameters with vegetation indices (VIs) was developed using high-resolution multispectral satellite data (3 m) to explore its relationship with individual tree biomass. Combining forest structural parameters with VIs further improved estimation accuracy, achieving an R²of 0.89 and an rRMSE of 0.34. Species-specific datasets show an 11.6% increase in R²compared to methods without VIs, and a 22.2% improvement over methods using only VIs. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis shows that the volume feature played a key role in model performance and remained stable throughout the training process. Altogether, the proposed approach enhances individual tree biomass and carbon sink estimations, showing great potential for large-scale precise forest carbon monitoring using multi-source remote sensing data.

Intergranular precipitation-enhanced wetting and phase transformation in an Al0.4CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy exposed to lead-bismuth eutectic

We report after exposure to oxygen-poor (10 -13 –10 -14 wt%) liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 500 °C for 500 h, LBE penetrates more than one order of magnitude deeper in an FCC Al 0.4 CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) decorated with a network of BCC (Ni, Al)-rich intergranular (IG) precipitates than in a single-phase, FCC Al 0.3 CoCrFeNi HEA without the IG precipitate network. This deterioration of corrosion resistance is attributed to the energetic nature of the BCC/FCC interphase boundaries (IBs) and resultant IB wetting. The LBE ingress film selectively leaches nickel located at those low-indexed crystalline planes, resulting in phase transformation from FCC to BCC structure.

Modeling and verification of dynamic field ionization for laser-target interactions

Integrating field ionization models into kinetic plasma simulations is required for a variety of applications, especially when field strengths vary from low to high regimes, such as in laser-target interactions. The introduction of new physics models into kinetic codes requires a rigorous verification of their accuracy through well-defined verification problems. In this work, the field ionization model that has been included in the kinetic plasma code VPIC is presented, along with the detailed approach adopted for its integration. This model includes a comprehensive range of field ionization mechanisms: multiphoton ionization, tunneling ionization, and barrier suppression ionization. New verification problems employed to evaluate the ionization model's fidelity are outlined, and the simulation parameters that affect the accuracy of simulation results are explored. Additionally, this work addresses the impact of field ionization on computational performance.

Genetic determinants of switchgrass-root-associated microbiota in field sites spanning its natural range

A fundamental goal in plant microbiome research is to determine the relative impacts of host and environmental effects on root microbiota composition, particularly how host genotype impacts bacterial community composition. Most studies characterizing the effect of plant genotype on root microbiota undersample host genetic diversity and grow plants outside of their native ranges, making the associations between host and microbes difficult to interpret. Here, we characterized the root microbiota of a large diversity panel of switchgrass, a North American native C4 bioenergy crop, in three field locations spanning its native range. Our data, composed of 1,961 samples, suggest that field location is the primary determinant of microbiome composition; however, substantial heritable variation is widespread across bacterial taxa, especially those in the Sphingomonadaceae family. Despite diverse compositions, relatively few highly prevalent taxa make up the majority of the switchgrass root microbiota, a large fraction of which is shared across sites. Local genotypes preferentially recruit/filter for local microbes, supporting the idea of affinity between local plants and their microbiota. Using genome-wide association, we identified loci impacting the abundance of >400 microbial strains and found an enrichment of genes involved in immune responses, signaling pathways, and secondary metabolism. We found loci associated with over half of the core microbiota (i.e., microbes in >80% of samples), regardless of field location. Finally, we show a genetic relationship between a basal plant immunity pathway and relative abundances of root microbiota. Furthermore, this study brings us closer to harnessing and manipulating beneficial microbial associations via host genetics.

Computational and experimental study of different brines in temperature swing solvent extraction desalination with amine solvents

Rapid global urbanization and high-salinity wastewater disposal from industrial activities have exerted significant pressure on water resources. Over the past few years, temperature swing solvent extraction (TSSE) has been identified as a promising technique to desalinate hypersaline brines. Despite its potential, the TSSE desalination literature has been mainly based on empirical insights, and the limited molecular simulation studies have primarily focused on NaCl brines. Herein, we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the TSSE desalination of four different brines, namely, KCl, KBr, NaCl, and NaBr using diisopropylamine as the solvent. Based on both bulk and interfacial brine-diisopropylamine MD results, here we investigate the qualitative and quantitative performance of the simulations by benchmarking these results against our experimental evaluations of these same systems. MD results provide satisfactory qualitative agreement with the experimental data of water solubilization in the organic phase and amine solubilization in the aqueous phase for the KBr, KCl, and NaBr brines. Also, the molecular mechanism of solvation of ionic species by water molecules over diisopropylamine suggested by the MD simulations is in agreement with our experimental data. However, larger qualitative and quantitative deviations were observed for the NaCl brines, and this is likely due to polarization and charge transfer effects, as quantified by our quantum chemical calculations.

Combinatorial transcription factor binding encodes cis -regulatory wiring of mouse forebrain GABAergic neurogenesis

Transcription factors (TFs) bind combinatorially to cis-regulatory elements, orchestrating transcriptional programs. Although studies of chromatin state and chromosomal interactions have demonstrated dynamic neurodevelopmental cis-regulatory landscapes, parallel understanding of TF interactions lags. To elucidate combinatorial TF binding driving mouse basal ganglia development, we integrated chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) for twelve TFs, H3K4me3-associated enhancer-promoter interactions, chromatin and gene expression data, and functional enhancer assays. We identified sets of putative regulatory elements with shared TF binding (TF-pRE modules) that orchestrate distinct processes of GABAergic neurogenesis and suppress other cell fates. The majority of pREs were bound by one or two TFs; however, a small proportion were extensively bound. These sequences had exceptional evolutionary conservation and motif density, complex chromosomal interactions, and activity as in vivo enhancers. Our results provide insights into the combinatorial TF-pRE interactions that activate and repress expression programs during telencephalon neurogenesis and demonstrate the value of TF binding toward modeling developmental transcriptional wiring.
