Effectiveness of spoilers on the GA(W)-1 airfoil with a high performance Fowler flap

Two-dimensional wind-tunnel tests were conducted to determine effectiveness of spoilers applied to the GA(W)-1 airfoil. Tests of several spoiler configurations show adequate control effectiveness with flap nested. It is found that providing a vent path allowing lower surface air to escape to the upper surface as the spoiler opens alleviates control reversal and hysteresis tendencies. Spoiler cross-sectional shape variations generally have a modest influence on control characteristics. A series of comparative tests of vortex generators applied to the (GA-W)-1 airfoil show that triangular planform vortex generators are superior to square planform vortex generators of the same span.

On the detectability of gravitational waves from W Ursae Majoris binary stars

The possibility is considered of using the collective gravitational radiation from all the W UMa binary stars in the Galaxy for critical tests of gravitational theories. The class of detectors which respond to the Riemann tensor is briefly examined, and the detectability of the cited radiation is analyzed. It is shown that the random stress field due to gravitational waves from all the W UMa binaries in the Galaxy will not be detectable in the near future because of interference from local gravity gradients.

Force and pressure tests of the GA(W)-1 airfoil with a 20% aileron and pressure tests with a 30% Fowler flap

Wind tunnel force and pressure tests were conducted for the GA(W)-1 airfoil equipped with a 20% aileron, and pressure tests were conducted with a 30% Fowler flap. All tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of 2.2 and a Mach number of 0.13. The aileron provides control effectiveness similar to ailerons applied to more conventional airfoils. Effects of aileron gaps from 0% to 2% chord were evaluated, as well as hinge moment characteristics. The aft camber of the GA(W)-1 section results in a substantial up-aileron moment, but the hinge moments associated with aileron deflection are similar to other configurations. Fowler flap pressure distributions indicate that unseparated flow is achieved for flap settings up to 40 deg., over a limited angle of attack range. Theoretical pressure distributions compare favorably with experiments for low flap deflections, but show substantial errors at large deflections.

Crustal structure of the Churchill-Superior boundary zone between 80 and 98 deg W longitude from Magsat anomaly maps and stacked passes

A modeling technique using spherical shell elements and equivalent dipole sources has been applied to Magsat signatures at the Churchill-Superior boundary in Manitoba, Ontario, and Ungava. A large satellite magnetic anomaly (12 nT amplitude) on POGO and Magsat maps near the Churchill-Superior boundary was found to be related to the Richmond Gulf aulacogen. The averaged crustal magnetization in the source region is 5.2 A/m. Stacking of the magnetic traces from Magsat passes reveals a magnetic signature (10 nT amplitude) at the Churchill-Superior boundary in an area studied between 80 deg W and 98 deg W. Modeling suggests a steplike thickening of the crust on the Churchill side of the boundary in a layer with a magnetization of 5 A/m. Signatures on aeromagnetic maps are also found in the source areas for both of these satellite anomalies.

Transitions in Fe-, Co-, Cu-, and Zn-like ions of W and Re

The spectra of highly ionized W and Re were observed by using laser-produced plasmas and a 3-m grazing-incidence spectrograph. Transitions in Fe- through Zn-like ions were identified. Wavelengths in the range 7-75 A were measured with an uncertainty of + or - 0.015 A, and energy levels were derived from the measured wavelengths. The ionization limits of Cu-like W and Re were determined.

IRAS observations of a large circumstellar dust shell around W Hydrae

IRAS observations at 60 and 100 microns reveal a large 30-40-arcmin (about 1-pc) diameter dust shell centered on the oxygen-rich red giant W Hya. Except for SNRs, this is the largest mass-loss envelope, in apparent diameter, known around any evolved star, including PN. W Hya's radiation field, stronger than the interstellar radiation field in the outer envelope, is sufficient to heat dust grains with IR emissivity proportional to lambda exp -1.2 to temperatures of about 40 K implied by the ratio of intensities at 60 and 100 microns.

Unoccupied electronic resonances of Sc adsorbed on W(001) by k-resolved inverse photoemission

Scandium adsorbed on the (001) face of tungsten has been studied using Auger-electron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, k-resolved inverse photoelectron spectroscopy, work-function measurements, and relativistic-electronic-structure calculations. We find that the work function of W(001) does not decrease monotonically as a function of scandium adsorption but reaches a minimum value of Phi = 3.25 eV at 50% coverage. For a complete monolayer, an order 1 X 1 Sc overlayer is formed. Inverse photoemission in the isochromat mode was used to map the unoccupied energy levels of this overlayer along the bar-Gamma(bar-Mu) symmetry direction of the surface Brillouin zone. Local-density-functional calculations using the muffin-tin orbital method were performed for a 1 X 1 Sc overlayer on W and are compared with the experimental two-dimensional band structure.

An Approximate Method of Calculating the Deformations of Wings Having Swept, M or W, A, and Swept-Tip Plan Forms

An approximate method of calculating the deformations of wings of uniform thickness having swept, M or W, Delta, and swept-tip plan forms is presented. The method employs an adjustment to the elementary beam theory to account for the effect of the triangular root portion of a swept wing on the deformation of the outboard section of the wing. To demonstrate the general applicability of the method, the modified elementary theory is applied to the more complex M or W, Delta, and swept-tip plan forms as well as to swept plan forms. For the purpose of calculating angles of attack, it is shown that the unmodified elementary beam theory applied to that part of the wing outboard of the root triangle produces satisfactory results. However, for calculating deflections it is necessary to include the effects of the root-triangle deformation.

Measurement of inclusive and differential cross sections for single top quark production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements of the inclusive and normalised differential cross sections are presented for the production of single top quarks in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC during 2016–2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . Events containing one electron and one muon in the final state are analysed. For the inclusive measurement, a multivariate discriminant, exploiting the kinematic properties of the events is used to separate the signal from the dominant t$\overline{t}$ background. A cross section of 79.2 ± 0.9(stat)$^{+7.7}_{-8.0}$ (syst) ± 1.2 (lumi) pb is obtained, consistent with the predictions of the standard model. For the differential measurements, a fiducial region is defined according to the detector acceptance, and the requirement of exactly one jet coming from the fragmentation of a bottom quark. The resulting distributions are unfolded to particle level and agree with the predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Search for a charged Higgs boson decaying into a heavy neutral Higgs boson and a W boson in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for a charged Higgs boson H ± decaying into a heavy neutral Higgs boson H and a W boson is presented. The analysis targets the H decay into a pair of tau leptons with at least one of them decaying hadronically and with an additional electron or muon present in the event. The search is based on proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment during 2016–2018 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb –1 . The data are consistent with standard model background expectations. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for an H ± in the mass range of 300–700 GeV, assuming an H with a mass of 200 GeV. The observed limits range from 0.085 pb for an H ± mass of 300 Ge V to 0.019 pb for a mass of 700 GeV. These are the first limits on H ± production in the H ± → HW ± decay channel at the LHC.

Measurement of inclusive and differential cross sections of single top quark production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

The first measurement of the inclusive and normalised differential cross sections of single top quark production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV is presented. The data were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2022, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb −1 . The analysed events contain one muon and one electron in the final state. For the inclusive measurement, multivariate discriminants exploiting the kinematic properties of the events are used to separate the signal from the dominant top quark-antiquark production background. A cross section of $82.3\pm 2.1{\left(\textrm{stat}\right)}_{-9.7}^{+9.9}\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 3.3\left(\textrm{lumi}\right)$ pb is obtained, consistent with the predictions of the standard model. A fiducial region is defined according to the detector acceptance to perform the differential measurements. The resulting differential distributions are unfolded to particle level and show good agreement with the predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Measurements of $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{W}$ differential cross sections and the leptonic charge asymmetry at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

Measurements of properties of top quark-antiquark pair production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are presented, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 , recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Events are selected based on the presence of either two leptons with the same electric charge or three leptons, and multiple jets and b-tagged jets. We present measurements of differential production cross sections as a function of kinematic variables sensitive to different aspects of the process modeling, using a multivariate discriminator in the two-lepton selection region and a simple selection-based method in the three-lepton region. The normalized cross section measurements are generally consistent with the standard model expectations, while we observe larger values compared to the expectations in the absolute cross section measurements, consistent with previous inclusive cross section measurements. In addition, we measure the leptonic charge asymmetry of this process, obtaining an observed value of ${A}_c^{\ell }=-{0.19}_{-0.18}^{+0.16}$, consistent with the expectation of −0.085 ± 0.006 predicted by next-to-leading order simulations.

Study of same-sign W boson scattering and anomalous couplings in events with one tau lepton from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A first study is presented of the cross section for the scattering of same-sign W boson pairs via the detection of a τ lepton. The data from proton-proton collisions at the center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV were collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . Events were selected that contain two jets with large pseudorapidity and large invariant mass, one τ lepton, one light lepton (e or μ), and significant missing transverse momentum. The measured cross section for electroweak same-sign WW scattering is $1.44^{+0.63}_{-0.56}$ times the standard model prediction. In addition, a search is presented for the indirect effects of processes beyond the standard model via the effective field theory framework, in terms of dimension-6 and dimension-8 operators.

First Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry in the Pure W -Boson-Exchange Decay Λ c + → Ξ 0 K +

Based on 4.4 fb − 1 of e + e − annihilation data collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.60 and 4.70 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the pure W -boson-exchange decay Λ c + → Ξ 0 K + is studied with a full angular analysis. The corresponding decay asymmetry is measured for the first time to be α Ξ 0 K + = 0.01 ± 0.16 ( stat ) ± 0.03 ( syst ) . This result reflects the noninterference effect between the S - and P -wave amplitudes. The phase shift between S - and P -wave amplitudes has two solutions, which are δ p − δ s = − 1.55 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.05 ( syst ) rad or 1.59 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.05 ( syst ) rad . On the implications of positive W mass shift

We investigate the phenomenological implications of the recent W mass measurement by the CDF collaboration, which exhibits tension with the standard model (SM) electroweak fit. Performing the fit to the electroweak observables within the SM effective field theory, we find that the new physics that contributes either to the determination of the electroweak vacuum expectation value, or to the oblique parameters, can improve the agreement with data. The best description is obtained from a fit where flavor universality is not required in the new physics operators, with 2 to 3 σ indications for several nonzero Wilson coefficients. We point out that top partners with order TeV masses could lead to the observed shift in the W mass.

Combination of the W boson polarization measurements in top quark decays using ATLAS and CMS data at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV

The combination of measurements of the W boson polarization in top quark decays performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations is presented. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb$^{−1}$ for each experiment. The measurements used events containing one lepton and having different jet multiplicities in the final state. The results are quoted as fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (F$_{0}$), left-handed (F$_{L}$), or right-handed (F$_{R}$) polarizations. The resulting combined measurements of the polarization fractions are F$_{0}$ = 0.693 ± 0.014 and F$_{L}$ = 0.315 ± 0.011. The fraction F$_{R}$ is calculated from the unitarity constraint to be F$_{R}$ = −0.008 ± 0.007. These results are in agreement with the standard model predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and represent an improvement in precision of 25 (29)% for F$_{0}$ (F$_{L}$) with respect to the most precise single measurement. A limit on anomalous right-handed vector (V$_{R}$), and left- and right-handed tensor (g$_{L}$, g$_{R}$) tWb couplings is set while fixing all others to their standard model values. The allowed regions are [−0.11, 0.16] for V$_{R}$, [−0.08, 0.05] for g$_{L}$, and [−0.04, 0.02] for g$_{R}$, at 95% confidence level. Limits on the corresponding Wilson coefficients are also derived.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Tailoring the nanotwin spacing of Ni-Mo-W alloys via composition and substrate temperature control

Alloy chemistry and deposition conditions can strongly influence the structure and properties of nanostructured materials. However, in Ni-Mo-W alloys, the limited influence of deposition rate on the twin spacing compels the exploration of other routes to tailor the structure and properties. This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of composition and substrate temperature on the nanotwin spacing of sputter-deposited Ni-Mo-W alloys. Increasing the Ni content from 84 at.% to 93 at.% doubled the average twin spacing from 1.8 nm to 3.8 nm, while raising the substrate temperature from room temperature to 200°C for a fixed Ni content of 91 at.% resulted in an increase from 2.9 nm to 5.0 nm. Concurrent weakening of the {111} texture occurred with both increased Ni and temperature. Furthermore, the combined effectiveness of composition and temperature demonstrated here provides a potential process window for tuning the twin spacing while maintaining the strongly textured columnar structure.

On the Structural Origin of Fast Li-Ion Cycling in Tetragonal Bronze-Type Nb 8 W 9 O 47

Bronze and bronze-derived, mixed metal oxides are materials of growing interest for lithium-ion battery anodes due to their high-rate capabilities and the potential for high energy densities via multielectron redox. We report on the synthesis and electrochemical properties of the tetragonal tungsten bronzetype phase Nb 8 W 9 O 47 and our investigation into the structural evolution of this phase upon lithium (de)intercalation, with particular attention to how it relates to the fast-cycling capabilities. Electrochemical cycling shows Nb 8 W 9 O 47 can achieve greater than one Li + per transition metal at rates of C/2 or slower and maintains a capacity equivalent to 0.65 Li + per transition metal at a rate of 20C. Sequential Rietveld analysis of operando X-ray diffraction data reveals anisotropic changes to the unit cell parameters during discharge, accompanied by an off-centering of the transition metals within their octahedral environments. While higher capacities can be accessed below 1.2 V, cells discharged to 1.0 V exhibit a significant expansion of the unit cell volume and reduced Coulombic efficiencies. This report suggests that rigid crystal structures incapable of undergoing polyhedral rotational deformations can instead exploit displacive distortions of the transition metal redox center to enable fast Li-ion cycling with minimal atomic rearrangements.
