Capsule_Grid User Guide

Software utility CAPSULE_GRID and several related procedures that automate grid generation for computational fluid dynamics calculations about axisymmetric atmospheric entry vehicles are described as a supplement to the documentation within the source codes. This application program and its ancillary software utilities are all in the public domain at the web site https://software.nasa.gov/software/category/all/arc/1/cfdtools with the exception of the 2D hyperbolic volume gridding step for which scripts driving either GRIDGEN1 or HYPGEN2 are available. CAPSULE_GRID was developed at NASA Ames Research Center in support of the DPLR3 real gas flow solver. Both forebodies (only) and full bodies are treated, for axisymmetric 2D flow calculations or for 3D calculations at angle of attack. The expected application is to the smooth outer mold line of a hypersonic atmospheric entry vehicle, for which a single layer of point-matched structured grid blocks normally suffices. Control files for a variety of representative cases are included with illustrations of results, and some insights into the subtleties of curvature-based grid point distribution are provided. Gridding of a capsule on a sting is supported. Additional procedures for treating arbitrarily long 2D wakes, prompted by asteroid studies and relevant to spacecraft such as Stardust, are also documented. Most recently, treating an asymmetric forebody (including an off-center nose, with or without an aft body) has been incorporated as an extra step.

Example Alternative Compliance Annual Report: EPAct State and Alternative Fuel Provider Fleet Program User Guide

The U.S. Department of Energy developed an electronic reporting spreadsheet to facilitate fleets' preparation of a complete Alternative Compliance (AC) annual report. All fleets that participate in AC are encouraged to use the spreadsheet. The following examples include one AC annual report that uses the spreadsheet and one AC annual report that does not use the spreadsheet. Both examples include all components that must be included in a fleet's AC annual report. For further instructions on how to use the reporting spreadsheet, review the Alternative Compliance Guidance Document.

The user guide for XSPEC, a command driven, interactive, X-ray spectral fitting program is presented. It is designed to be completely detector independent so it can be used for any X-ray spectral instrument. An overview of the program commands and a walk through of an XSPEC session is presented. Individual commands and descriptions of the spectral models are given. For the more experienced user details of some of the programs associated with XSPEC, the command parser, and the addition of models to XSPEC are included. The PLT plotting package used by XSPEC is described together with the maximum likelihood option for users possessing X-ray spectra with small numbers of counts per bin. Details on the various files used by XSPEC and on the general file structure are also given.

Air Traffic Complexity Measurement Environment (ACME): Software User's Guide

A user's guide for the Air Traffic Complexity Measurement Environment (ACME) software is presented. The ACME consists of two major components, a complexity analysis tool and user interface. The Complexity Analysis Tool (CAT) analyzes complexity off-line, producing data files which may be examined interactively via the Complexity Data Analysis Tool (CDAT). The Complexity Analysis Tool is composed of three independently executing processes that communicate via PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) and Unix sockets. The Runtime Data Management and Control process (RUNDMC) extracts flight plan and track information from a SAR input file, and sends the information to GARP (Generate Aircraft Routes Process) and CAT (Complexity Analysis Task). GARP in turn generates aircraft trajectories, which are utilized by CAT to calculate sector complexity. CAT writes flight plan, track and complexity data to an output file, which can be examined interactively. The Complexity Data Analysis Tool (CDAT) provides an interactive graphic environment for examining the complexity data produced by the Complexity Analysis Tool (CAT). CDAT can also play back track data extracted from System Analysis Recording (SAR) tapes. The CDAT user interface consists of a primary window, a controls window, and miscellaneous pop-ups. Aircraft track and position data is displayed in the main viewing area of the primary window. The controls window contains miscellaneous control and display items. Complexity data is displayed in pop-up windows. CDAT plays back sector complexity and aircraft track and position data as a function of time. Controls are provided to start and stop playback, adjust the playback rate, and reposition the display to a specified time.

Optimization of Residual Stresses in MMC's Using Compensating/Compliant Interfacial Layers. Part 2: OPTCOMP User's Guide

A user's guide for the computer program OPTCOMP is presented in this report. This program provides a capability to optimize the fabrication or service-induced residual stresses in uni-directional metal matrix composites subjected to combined thermo-mechanical axisymmetric loading using compensating or compliant layers at the fiber/matrix interface. The user specifies the architecture and the initial material parameters of the interfacial region, which can be either elastic or elastoplastic, and defines the design variables, together with the objective function, the associated constraints and the loading history through a user-friendly data input interface. The optimization procedure is based on an efficient solution methodology for the elastoplastic response of an arbitrarily layered multiple concentric cylinder model that is coupled to the commercial optimization package DOT. The solution methodology for the arbitrarily layered cylinder is based on the local-global stiffness matrix formulation and Mendelson's iterative technique of successive elastic solutions developed for elastoplastic boundary-value problems. The optimization algorithm employed in DOT is based on the method of feasible directions.

Optimization of Residual Stresses in MMC's through Process Parameter Control and the use of Heterogeneous Compensating/Compliant Interfacial Layers. OPTCOMP2 User's Guide

A user's guide for the computer program OPTCOMP2 is presented in this report. This program provides a capability to optimize the fabrication or service-induced residual stresses in unidirectional metal matrix composites subjected to combined thermomechanical axisymmetric loading by altering the processing history, as well as through the microstructural design of interfacial fiber coatings. The user specifies the initial architecture of the composite and the load history, with the constituent materials being elastic, plastic, viscoplastic, or as defined by the 'user-defined' constitutive model, in addition to the objective function and constraints, through a user-friendly data input interface. The optimization procedure is based on an efficient solution methodology for the inelastic response of a fiber/interface layer(s)/matrix concentric cylinder model where the interface layers can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous. The response of heterogeneous layers is modeled using Aboudi's three-dimensional method of cells micromechanics model. The commercial optimization package DOT is used for the nonlinear optimization problem.

Micromechanics of metal matrix composites using the Generalized Method of Cells model (GMC) user's guide

A user's guide for the program gmc.f is presented. The program is based on the generalized method of cells model (GMC) which is capable via a micromechanical analysis, of predicting the overall, inelastic behavior of unidirectional, multi-phase composites from the knowledge of the properties of the viscoplastic constituents. In particular, the program is sufficiently general to predict the response of unidirectional composites having variable fiber shapes and arrays.
