Fuel samples, 90UC - 10 ZrC, and chemically vapor deposited tungsten fuel cups were fabricated for the study of the long term dimensional stability and compatibility of the carbide-tungsten fuel-cladding systems under irradiation. These fuel samples and fuel cups were assembled into the fuel pins of two capsules, designated as V-2E and V-2F, for irradiation in NASA Plum Brook Reactor Facility at a fission power density of 172 watts/c.c. and a miximum cladding temperature of 1823 K. Fabrication methods and characteristics of the fuel samples and fuel cups prepared are described.
Recent rocket observations of the molecular nitrogen Vegard-Kaplan system in the aurora have been reinterpreted using an atmospheric model based on mass spectrometer measurements in an aurora of similar intensity at the same time of year. It is found that the population rates of the considered levels in the aurora are accurately determined by radiative cascade from two other states excited by direct electron impact. In some bright auroras the role of NO in quenching the lower vibrational levels of the A state is significant. The conclusions are based on a number of relevant auroral observations in combination with calculations using electron cross section and transition probability measurements by Shemansky and Broadfoot (1971).
Analyses have been made of lead, uranium, and thorium in two soil samples from the Luna 16 mission. Lead was found to be distinctly radiogenic, but significantly less radiogenic than other lunar soils. The Th/U ratio was found to be 3.8, and the uranium concentration was the lowest so far found for lunar soils.
The problems associated with data acquisition and reduction in the University of Virginia superconducting magnetic suspension and balance facility are similar to those in free-flight ranges (or tunnels). The model undergoes a 'Quasi-six-degree-of-freedom' motion which must be monitored both in position and angular orientation from which the aerodynamics must be inferred. The data acquisition problem is made more difficult because geometric constraints prevent direct visual access to the model in the Mach 3 wind tunnel. The methods, accuracies and problems associated with the acquisition of data are discussed.-
Consideration of the possibility of extending the use of a cold magnetic balance wind tunnel system to non-continuously spinning aircraft configurations and to subsonic flow regimes. The problems involved in these extensions are discussed. The possible use of iron for the magnetic support element, or some material reasonable equivalent, is found to be crucial. The existing theoretical evidence that iron may be used without penalty is summarized.
Computer program was devised to compute free-fall trajectories of satellites, allowing for injection errors and midcourse velocity perturbations. Program consists of trajectory perturbing program and N-body integrating conic program which can also be used as 2-body patch conic program.
Primary efforts were made to outline areas where low-relief features in the Apollo 16 landing site and associated plains and mare units were intensified in near-terminator photography. A description and, in some cases, a preliminary interpretation of several of these areas is included in an attempt to provide additional data relevant to the interpretation of the hills, plains, and associated units investigated on the Apollo 16 mission. Near-terminator photography for areas discussed is listed in a table.
Uranium carbide fueled, thermionic emitter configurations were encapsulated and irradiated. One capsule contained a specimen clad with fluoride derived chemically vapor deposited (CVD) tungsten. The other capsule used a duplex clad specimen consisting of chloride derived on floride derived CVD tungsten. Both fuel pins were 16 millimeters in diameter and contained a 45.7-millimeter length of fuel.
A research project on the future of U.S. domestic air freight operations was conducted. The two main subjects of the project were: (1) during the 1965 to 1969 time period, when the airlines introduced jet freighters into domestic service and air freight traffic growth continued at a high rate, what strategies were employed by management and with what results and (2) what are the opportunities and problems confronting the domestic air freight industry during the 1970 and 1980 time period. The results of the analysis are presented in the form of graphs and tables.
An exercise program was initiated in a federal agency to assess the feasibility of such a program, and to identify the factors that influenced joining, adherence to, and effectiveness of the program. The program was utilized by 237 of the 998 eligible federal employees; mean attendance rate was 1.3 days/week. Those who volunteered perceived a need for increased physical activity, believed they had sufficient time to participate and derived subjective as well as objective benefits. Significant improvements were found in heart rate response to the standard exercise test, body weight, skinfold measurements and triglyceride levels.
