Cautionary tales for reduced-gravity particle research

Failure of experiments conducted on the KC-135 aircraft in zero gravity are discussed. Tests that were a total failure are reported. Why the failure occurred and the sort of questions that potential researchers should ask in order to avoid the appearance of abstracts such as this are discussed. Many types of aggregation studies were proposed for the Space Station, and it is hoped that the following synopsis of events will add a touch of reality to experimentation proposed for this zero-gravity environment.

A distributable APSE

A distributed Ada program library is a key element in a distributed Ada Program Support Environment (APSE). To implement this successfully, the program library universe as defined by the Ada Reference Manual must be broken up into independently manageable pieces. This in turn requires the support of a distributed database system, as well as a mechanism for identifying compilation units, linkable subprograms, and Ada types in a decentralized way, to avoid falling victim to the bottlenecks of a global database and/or global unique-identifier manager. It was found that the ability to decentralize Ada program library activity is a major advantage in the management of large Ada programs. Currently, there are 18 resource-catalog revision sets, each in its own Host Interface (HIF) partition, plus 18 partitions for testing each of these, plus 11 partitions for the top-level compiler/linker/program library manager components. Compiling and other development work can proceed in parallel in each of these partitions, without suffering the performance bottlenecks of global locks or global unique-identifier generation.

An architecture for integrating distributed and cooperating knowledge-based Air Force decision aids

MITRE has been developing a Knowledge-Based Battle Management Testbed for evaluating the viability of integrating independently-developed knowledge-based decision aids in the Air Force tactical domain. The primary goal for the testbed architecture is to permit a new system to be added to a testbed with little change to the system's software. Each system that connects to the testbed network declares that it can provide a number of services to other systems. When a system wants to use another system's service, it does not address the server system by name, but instead transmits a request to the testbed network asking for a particular service to be performed. A key component of the testbed architecture is a common database which uses a relational database management system (RDBMS). The RDBMS provides a database update notification service to requesting systems. Normally, each system is expected to monitor data relations of interest to it. Alternatively, a system may broadcast an announcement message to inform other systems that an event of potential interest has occurred. Current research is aimed at dealing with issues resulting from integration efforts, such as dealing with potential mismatches of each system's assumptions about the common database, decentralizing network control, and coordinating multiple agents.

Dynamic fatigue testing of Zerodur glass-ceramic

The inherent brittleness of glass invariably leads to a large variability in strength data and a time dependence in strength. Leading rate plays a large role in strength values. Glass is found to be weaker when supporting loads over long periods of time as compared to glass which undergoes rapid leading. These properties complicate the structural design allowables for the utilization of glass components in an application such as Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF). The test methodology to obtain parameters which can be used to predict the reliability and life time of Zerodur glass-ceramic which is to be used for the mirrors in the AXAF is described.

Operating and environmental characteristics of Sigma Tau hydrogen masers used in the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA)

Presented here are the results obtained from performance evaluation of a pair of Sigma Tau Standards Corporation Model VLBA-112 active hydrogen maser frequency standards. These masers were manufactured for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) for use on the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) project and were furnished to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for the purpose of these tests. Tests on the two masers were performed in the JPL Frequency Standards Laboratory (FSL) and included the characterization of output frequency stability versus environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, magnetic field, and barometric pressure. The performance tests also included the determination of phase noise and Allan variance using both FSL and Sigma Tau masers as references. All tests were conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, with only the desired environmental and operational parameters varied to determine sensitivity to external environment.

Turbulent hydrocarbon combustions kinetics - Stochastic modeling and verification

Idealized reactors, that are designed to ensure perfect mixing and are used to generate the combustion kinetics for complex hydrocarbon fuels, may depart from the ideal and influence the kinetics model performance. A complex hydrocarbon kinetics model that was established by modeling a jet-stirred combustor (JSC) as a perfectly stirred reactor (PSR), is reevaluated with a simple stochastic process in order to introduce the unmixedness effect quantitatively into the reactor system. It is shown that the comparisons of the predictions and experimental data have improved dramatically with the inclusion of the unmixedness effect in the rich combustion region. The complex hydrocarbon kinetics is therefore verified to be mixing effect free and be applicable to general reacting flow calculations.

Integrated NDVI images for Niger 1986-1987

Two NOAA AVHRR images are presented which provide a comparison of the geographic distribution of an integration of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for the Sahel zone in Niger for the growing seasons of 1986 and 1987. The production of the images and the application of the images for resource management are discussed. Daily large area coverage with a spatial resolution of 1.1 km at nadir were transformed to the NDVI and geographically registered to produce the images.

AVHRR for monitoring global tropical deforestation

Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data have been used to assess the dynamics of forest trnsformations in three parts of the tropical belt. A large portion of the Amazon Basin has been systematically covered by Local Area Coverage (LAC) data in the 1985-1987 period. The analysis of the vegetation index and thermal data led to the identification and measurement of large areas of active deforestation. The Kalimantan/Borneo forest fires were monitored and their impact was evaluated using the Global Area Coverage (GAC) 4 km resolution data. Finally, High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) data have provided preliminary information on current activities taking place at the boundary between the savanna and the forest in the Southern part of West Africa. The AVHRR approach is found to be a highly valuable means for carrying out deforestation assessments in regional and global perspectives.

Applications of flight control system methods to an advanced combat rotorcraft

Advanced flight control system design, analysis, and testing methodologies developed at the Ames Research Center are applied in an analytical and flight test evaluation of the Advanced Digital Optical Control System (ADOCS) demonstrator. The primary objectives are to describe the knowledge gained about the implications of digital flight control system design for rotorcraft, and to illustrate the analysis of the resulting handling-qualities in the context of the proposed new handling-qualities specification for rotorcraft. Topics covered in-depth are digital flight control design and analysis methods, flight testing techniques, ADOCS handling-qualities evaluation results, and correlation of flight test results with analytical models and the proposed handling-qualities specification. The evaluation of the ADOCS demonstrator indicates desirable response characteristics based on equivalent damping and frequency, but undersirably large effective time-delays (exceeding 240 m sec in all axes). Piloted handling-qualities are found to be desirable or adequate for all low, medium, and high pilot gain tasks; but handling-qualities are inadequate for ultra-high gain tasks such as slope and running landings.

Remote sensing of biomass burning in the tropics

A technique for assessing the effects of biomass burning on the climate is described. This method is based on the analysis of remote sensing data for the emitted particulates. The relationship between particulates and trace gases is studied. The assessment technique is applied to the 1987 burning season in Brazil. It is noted that during the dry season there may be up to 5000 fires per day which emit 200 ton/hr CO2, 20 ton/hr CO, and 0.5 ton/hr of CH4 to the atmosphere.

Observations and evolution of hot coronae around early type galaxies

This review describes obervations of hot coronae around early-type galaxies. The observations show that early-type galaxies have 0.5-4.5 keV luminosities up to nearly 10 to the 43rd ergs/sec dominated by thermal emission from 10 to the 10th solar masses of hot (about 10 to the 7th K) gas. Calculations which model the evolution of the coronae are presented. These models can explain the present epoch observations as well as predict the coronal properties at large redshift.

Numerical investigation of the transient SSME fuel preburner combustor flowfield

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with finite-rate reactions, FDNS2DR, has been developed to study the start transient of the Space Shuttle Main Engine Fuel Preburner (FPB) operation. This design tool can predict accurately the severe thermal gradients which are impressed upon the fuel preburner and turbine during the start transient. An axisymmetric configuration with a grid size of 68 x 45 is used to represent the FPB flowfield. The transient upstream boundary conditions are obtained from a one-dimensional Digital Transient Model simulation to better represent the actual operation. The results of the CFD calculation show temperature spikes near the FPB exit whose timing and magnitude agree well with those of the measured turbine inlet temperature data.

A comparison of SMMR and AVHRR data for continental land cover characterization

Images using reflected visible and NIR data and images using passive microwave data were compared in terms of their usefulness for characterizing land-cover types in South America and Africa. The former images are of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the latter images are of the microwave polarization difference temperature (MPDT). The combined use of MPDT and NDVI data sets show clear synergistic benefits in using the two data sets. However, the evidence suggests that for most cover types, increasing the temporal frequency of the NDVI images is more advantageous than incorporating MPDT data sets.

Comparing SMMR and AVHRR data for drought monitoring

Coincident Scanning Microwave Multi-channel Radiometer 37 GHz and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer normalized difference vegetation index satellite data have been compared from drought-affected regions of sub-Saharan Africa and northeastern Brazil for the time period of 1980-1985. Although the two satellite data types can be highly correlated, differences between them were found for the Sahel zone in 1985 and for northeastern Brazil from 1984-1985. These findings suggest that scattering or surface roughness contributions may be greater than previously assumed for the 37 GHz microwave data.

Comparison of data from the Scanning Multifrequency Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) with data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) for terrestrial environmental monitoring - An overview

Comparison between the microwave polarized difference temperature (MPDT) derived from 37 GHz band data and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from near-infrared and red bands, from several empirical investigations are summarized. These indicate the complementary character of the two measures in environmental monitoring. Overall the NDVI is more sensitive to green leaf activity, whereas the MPDT appears also to be related to other elements of the above-ground biomass. Monitoring of hydrological phenomena is carried out much more effectively by the MPDT. Further work is needed to explain spectral and temporal variation in MPDT both through modelling and field experiments.
