Continuum modeling of three-dimensional truss-like space structures

A mathematical and computational analysis capability has been developed for calculating the effective mechanical properties of three-dimensional periodic truss-like structures. Two models are studied in detail. The first, called the octetruss model, is a three-dimensional extension of a two-dimensional model, and the second is a cubic model. Symmetry considerations are employed as a first step to show that the specific octetruss model has four independent constants and that the cubic model has two. The actual values of these constants are determined by averaging the contributions of each rod element to the overall structure stiffness. The individual rod member contribution to the overall stiffness is obtained by a three-dimensional coordinate transformation. The analysis shows that the effective three-dimensional elastic properties of both models are relatively close to each other.

Buckling tests of structural elements applicable to large erectable space trusses

Detailed data on columns and center a joint for completeness is presented. Buckling data for a tripod arrangement of these columns using a cluster joint is also presented. The objectives of these test are: (1) to gain insight into joint requirements for truss structure; (2) to assess the structural qualities of the column and center joint designs; (3) to investigate the restraint provided by octetruss core members (tripod) to the cluster joints; (4) to provide insight into the level of analysis required to predict buckling behavior of Gr/E nestable columns both as simple columns and in a tripod arrangement; and (5) to provide a data base for Gr/E nestable columns.

An 11-meter deployable truss for the SEASAT radar antenna

A folding three dimensional truss and tripod assembly which deploys the SEASAT Synthetic Aperture Radar Antenna is described. The folding structure with the antenna panels and rf components stows in an 8.5-inch-thick package. Upon deployment, the structure produced is a flat and rigid support for the antenna.

Analysis of beam-like lattice trusses

A simple procedure is presented for predicting the thermoelastic and free vibration responses of large repetitive beam-like trusses. The procedure is based on replacing the original lattice structure by an equivalent continuum beam model and obtaining closed-form (exact) solutions for the beam model. The equivalent beam model accounts for warping and shear deformation in the plane of the cross-section and is characterized by its thermoelastic strain and kinetic energies, from which the equations of motion and constitutive relations can be derived. The high accuracy of the results obtained by the proposed approach is demonstrated by means of numerical examples.

Wind loads for bar-truss structures

An analysis method developed to calculate the wind loads on the nodes or joints of the truss type support structure of the 64 meter antenna is described. The method uses the CBAR element and GRID coordinate cards of the NASTRAN or IDEAS structural analysis programs as inputs to the computer model of the structure. Cross flow principles and vector analysis are also used in the analysis. The algorithms used are described and probable accuracy of the solution is discussed.

A closed-loop principal component analysis of a tetrahedral truss

A tetrahedral truss, representative of a fairly broad class of large space structures, is considered. A method, measuring the dynamical importance of each elastic mode when the structure is under feedback control, is presented. The main conclusion is that the closed-loop importance of each vibration mode depends on the robustness requirements. Also, there appears to be a conflict between precise control of a given node of the structure and stability margin, these two requirements leading to contradictory classifications of the modes by order of importance.

Hybrid optimization of truss structures with strength and buckling constraints

An efficient scheme utilizing standard nonlinear programming methodology is presented for the optimal design of elastic, redundant structures with strength and buckling constraints. Numerical examples are given which demonstrate how this method, involving a constraint redefinition, can successfully overcome certain problems typical to such structures. The scheme is applied to the design of a cantilever truss with strength and buckling constraints, in which optimal nonuniform cross section columns are used for all elements critical in buckling. It is found that permitting node movement and adding redundancies can lower the weight of the structure for the prescribed design constraints. In addition, the node excursions in this configuration are shown to be relatively small.

Application of data management to thermal/structural analysis of space trusses

A relational data base management system has been used for managing engineering data in a prototype computerized thermal/structural integrated design system. The resulting system has been applied to the analysis of a tetrahedral space truss to demonstrate and evaluate the ability to store, retrieve, query, modify, and manipulate data. Key software used includes relational data management software, several applications programs, and selected integrated software developed during the study. Results discussed include system development, system use and performance, and advantages of an integrated data management system.

Self-shadowing of orbiting trusses

The approach used to assess shadowing reductions on the heating of orbiting trusses involves determining the heating rates with slender member shadowing effects included and then obtaining the thermal response of the shadowed member. Steps taken to identify shadowers, find locations where shadowing occurs and calculate shadow intensity are listed. The finite element thermal structural analysis of cable stiffened space structure is delineated and the exact solution of the caternary problem is given. Typical cable surface heating rates are plotted. The structural analysis includes large deformation (nonlinear), thermal effect, and the pretension effect. Displacements and stresses are computed at different orbital positions for an orbit.

Expressions are developed for single degree of freedom hinges which allow packaging of the structure into a configuration in which all members are parallel and closely packed in a square pattern. Deployment is sequential, thus providing control over the structure during deployment.
