An experimental investigation was conducted in a nozzle static test facility to determine the performance characteristics of a cold-flow, 21.59-centimeter-diameter plug nozzle with a multispoke primary. Two multispoke primary nozzles, a 12-spoke and a 24-spoke, were tested and compared with an annular plug nozzle. The supersonic cruise configurations for both spoke primaries performed about the same, with a gross thrust coefficient of 0.974, a decrease of approximately 1.5 percent from the reference nozzle. The takeoff configuration for the 12-spoke primary had a gross thrust coefficient of 0.957, a decrease of 1.5 percent from the reference nozzle, and the 24-spoke primary had a gross thrust coefficient of 0.95.

The semiclassical approximation is applied to anharmonic diatomic oscillators in excited initial states. Multistate numerical solutions giving the vibrational transition probabilities for collinear collisions with an inert atom are compared with equivalent, exact quantum-mechanical calculations. Several symmetrization methods are shown to correlate accurately the predictions of both theories for all initial states, transitions, and molecular types tested, but only if coupling of the oscillator motion and the classical trajectory of the incident particle is considered. In anharmonic heteronuclear molecules, the customary semiclassical method of computing the classical trajectory independently leads to transition probabilities with anomalous low-energy resonances. Proper accounting of the effects of oscillator compression and recoil on the incident particle trajectory removes the anomalies and restores the applicability of the semiclassical approximation.

Bodies/systems need to be stopped and locked/latched at the end of their path. Some examples of these systems in the aerospace industry (including launch vehicle, spacecraft, and the ground support equipment) are the command module access arm, service arms, docking module of the ASTP and the orbiter access arm for the space shuttle. Two major aspects are covered: (1) various methods of latching and (2) selection of the optimum method for latching, depending on the application and the design requirement criteria.

The predicted emission spectrum of galactic dust at about 10 K is compared with the spectrum of 2.8-K universal blackbody radiation and with the spectrum of the anisotropy expected in the 2.8-K radiation due to motion of earth with respect to the coordinate system in which the radiation was last scattered. The extremely anisotropic galactic-dust emission spectrum may contribute a significant background to anisotropy measurements which scan through the galactic plane. The contamination would appear in an 8-mm scan around the celestial equator, for example, as a spurious 200 km/s velocity toward declination 0 deg, right ascension 19 hr, if predictions are correct. The predicted spectrum of dust emission in the galactic plane at longitudes not exceeding about 30 deg falls below the total 2.8-K cosmic background intensity at wavelengths of at least 1 mm.
A three-dimensional vibration-rotation collision model is formulated within a semiclassical framework to study the effect of coupled rotational motion on the rate of vibrational energy transfer for collisions between anharmonic diatomic molecules and structureless atoms. Emphasis is on the net rates of vibrational energy transfer summed over all final rotational states rather than those for individual vibration-rotation transitions. The corresponding three-dimensional rate parameters are cast into forms that may be identified with equivalent parameters associated with the collinear approximation. Their comparisons allow the validity of a collinear model to be evaluated and some constraints on its application to be implied. The mechanisms of vibrational energy transfer including rotational transitions are shown to be separable into three classes which are identified and discussed

The system provides a constant travel speed along a contoured workpiece. It has a driven skate characterized by an elongated bed, with a pair of independently pivoted trucks connected to the bed for support. The trucks are mounted on a contoured track of arbitrary configuration in a mutually spaced relation. An axially extensible torch head manipulator arm is mounted on the bed of the carriage and projects perpendicular from the midportion. The torch head is mounted at its distal end. A real-time computerized control drive subsystem is used to advance the skate along the track of a variable rate for maintaining a constant speed for the torch head tip, and to position the torch axis relative to a preset angle to the workpiece.
