Martensite decomposition during rapid heating of Ti-6Al-4V studied via in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction

Martensite, α‘, commonly appears in Ti-6Al-4V upon rapid cooling from above the β-transus temperature. It is known that α‘ decomposes into α and β at high temperatures but well below the β-transus temperature. Here, we study the decomposition of martensitic Ti-6Al-4V under rapid laser heating, employing in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. A comparison is made with post-annealed Ti-6Al-4V under heating to elucidate changes without martensite decomposition. The fast acquisition of X-ray diffraction data at 250 Hz temporally resolves the decomposition process initiated by annihilating dislocations in α‘. The recovery process is accompanied by structural changes in martensite, followed by the phase transformation to β. Thermal profiles estimated from the lattice parameter data reveal the influence of heating rates and dislocation densities on the decomposition process. Throughout the analysis of the diffraction profiles with respect to estimated temperature, we propose a straightforward method for approximating the initiation temperature of martensite decomposition.

Advanced oxygen-electrode-supported solid oxide electrochemical cells with Sr(Ti,Fe)O 3–δ -based fuel electrodes for electricity generation and hydrogen production

Sr(Ti 0.3 Fe 0.7 )O 3–δ (STF) and the associated exsolution electrodes Sr 0.95 (Ti 0.3 Fe 0.63 Ru 0.07 )O 3–δ (STFR), or Sr 0.95 (Ti 0.3 Fe 0.63 Ni 0.07 )O 3–δ (STFN) are alternatives to Ni-based cermet fuel electrodes for solid oxide electrochemical cells (SOCs). They can provide improved tolerance to redox cycling and fuel impurities, and may allow direct operation with hydrocarbon fuels. However, such perovskite-oxide-based electrodes present processing challenges for co-sintering with thin electrolytes to make fuel electrode supported SOCs. Thus, they have been mostly limited to electrolyte-supported SOCs. Here, we report the first example of the application of perovskite oxide fuel electrodes in novel oxygen electrode supported SOCs (OESCs) with thin YSZ electrolytes, and demonstrate their excellent performance. The OESCs have La 0.8 Sr 0.2 MnO 3–δ –Zr 0.92 Y 0.16 O 2–δ (LSM–YSZ) oxygen electrode-supports that are enhanced via infiltration of SrTi 0.3 Fe 0.6 Co 0.1 O 3–δ , while the fuel electrodes are either Ni-YSZ, STF, STFN, or STFR. Fuel cell power density as high as 1.12 W cm –2 is obtained at 0.7 V and 800 °C in humidified hydrogen and air with the STFR electrode, 60% higher than the same cell made with a Ni-YSZ electrode. Electrolysis current density as high as –1.72 A cm –2 is obtained at 1.3 V and 800 °C in 50% H 2 O to 50% H 2 mode; the STFR cell yields a value 72% higher than the same cell made with a Ni-YSZ electrode, and competitive with the widely used conventional Ni-YSZ-supported cells. The high performance is due in part to the low resistance of the thin YSZ electrolyte, and also to the low fuel electrode polarization resistance, which decreases with fuel electrode in the order: Ni-YSZ > STF > STFN > STFR. The high performance of the latter two electrodes is due to exsolution of catalytic metal nanoparticles; the results are discussed in terms of the microstructure and properties of each electrode material, and surface oxygen exchange resistance values are obtained over a range of conditions for STF, STFN, and STFN. Furthermore, the STF fuel electrodes also provide good stability during redox cycling.

Na ion dynamics in P2-Na x [Ni 1/3 Ti 2/3 ]O 2 : a combination of quasi-elastic neutron scattering and first-principles molecular dynamics study

In this work, the P2-type layered material Na 2/3 [Ni 1/3 Ti 2/3 ]O 2 was studied as a promising bi-functional electrode material for sodium-ion batteries. To assess the electrochemical performance of this material, we investigated the diffusion mechanism as well as ionic and electronic conductivity with a combination of experimental and computational techniques. The quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments and first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations were performed to identify the diffusion mechanism. The QENS data showed that Na ion diffusion can be well described by the Singwi–Sjölander jump diffusion model, where the obtained mean jump length matched the distances between the neighboring edge-share and face-share Na sites. FPMD predicted diffusivity values similar to those from QENS. The computed composition dependence of ionic and electronic conductivity of Na x [Ni 1/3 Ti 2/3 ]O 2 suggested that electronic conductivity changes significantly when x deviates from 2/3 as the redox couple of Ni and Ti is activated, while the change of ionic conductivity with x is relatively small.

Probing how Ti- and Nb-substitution affect the stability and improve the electrochemical performance of β- and ε-LiVOPO 4

LiVOPO 4 is a promising next-generation multi-electron cathode material, boasting a theoretical capacity of 305 mA h g -1 , significantly higher than any commercially used Li-ion battery cathode material. However, the material still faces several limitations, including the difficulty in attaining the full theoretical capacity at higher rates and capacity fade over several cycles. Here, in this paper, we show that Ti- and Nb-substitution can be used to improve the thermal stability and electrochemical performance of LiVOPO 4 . We show through in situ heating with XRD and a novel gradient heating technique that both Ti- and Nb-substitution cause β-LiVOPO 4 to be stabilized relative to ε-LiVOPO 4 . This is due to transition-metal substitution, which increases the O-vacancy formation energies, pushing the β → ε transition to higher temperatures. We show that it is still possible to synthesize pure-phase ε-LiVOPO 4 through the use of high temperatures to generate these O-vacancies. We show that even 1% of Ti- or Nb-substitution can improve the initial capacity and long term cycling capability of LiVOPO 4 by improving the high-voltage capacity and reducing the capacity fade in both the high- and low-voltage regions. This is due to the overall improved Li + ion diffusion which is caused by an improved charge-transfer resistance during cycling.

Effect of surface modification on silica supported Ti catalysts for cyclohexene oxidation with vapor-phase hydrogen peroxide

Surface modification via grafting of organic moieties on a Lewis acid catalyst (silica supported Ti catalyst, Ti-SiO 2 ) alters the activation of H 2 O 2 in vapor-phase cyclohexene epoxidation. Grafting a fluorous group (1H,1H-perfluoro-octyl) suppresses activity of Ti-SiO 2 . Conversely, grafting either a nonpolar group (octyl) or a polar aprotic group (triethylene glycol monomethyl ether) enhances rates and shifts selectivity toward trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol.

Plasmon spectroscopy for the determination of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene few layer stacks architecture

Like many 2D materials, numerous properties of MXene multilayers, and especially the most popular one Ti 3 C 2 T x , have been shown to significantly depend on their architecture, i.e. the number of layers and interlayer distance. These structural parameters are thus key elements to be characterized for the analysis of MXene properties. Focusing on valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy (VEELS) as performed in a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and using density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we here analyze the layer dependent large changes in the VEEL spectra of Ti 3 C 2 T x multilayers as a probe of their total thickness, and emphasize the bulk plasmon energy sensitivity to interlayer distance. Together these findings allow to directly quantify the absolute number of layers in a Ti 3 C 2 T x stack up to ~10 nm thickness and give access to interlayer distance modifications with sub-angström sensitivity, evidencing VEELS as a powerful method for the characterization of MXene multilayers on the nanometer scale. We expect these results to be relevant for the study of structure/properties correlations in this class of materials, especially with the development of in situ or environmental TEM experiments.

Evolution of charge correlations in the hole-doped kagome superconductor CsV 3−𝑥⁢ Ti 𝑥 ⁢Sb 5

The interplay between superconductivity and charge correlations in the kagome metal CsV 3⁢ Sb 5 can be tuned by external perturbations such as doping or pressure. Here we present a study of charge correlations and superconductivity upon hole doping via Ti substitution on the V kagome sites in CsV 3−𝑥 ⁢Ti 𝑥 ⁢Sb 5 via synchrotron x-ray diffraction and scanning superconducting quantum interference device measurements. While the superconducting phase, as viewed via the vortex structure, remains conventional and unchanged across the phase diagram, the nature of charge correlations evolves as a function of hole doping from the first superconducting dome into the second superconducting dome. For Ti doping in the first superconducting dome, competing 2×2×2 and 2×2×4 supercells form within the charge density wave state and are suppressed rapidly with carrier substitution. In the second superconducting dome, no charge correlations are detected. Here, comparing these results to those observed for CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5−𝑥 ⁢Sn 𝑥 suggests important differences between hole doping via chemical substitution on the V and Sb sites, particularly in the disorder potential associated with each dopant.

Low-energy magneto-optics of Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 in a [111] magnetic field

The pyrochlore magnet Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 shows a lack of magnetic order to low temperatures and is considered to be a quantum spin liquid candidate. Here we perform time-domain THz spectroscopy on high-quality Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 crystals and study the low-energy excitations as a function of [111] magnetic field with high energy resolution. The low-energy crystal-field excitations change their energies anomalously under magnetic field. Despite several sharp field-dependent changes, we show that the material's spectrum can be described not by phase transitions but by field-dependent hybridization between the low-energy crystal-field levels. We highlight the strong coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom in Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 as evidenced by the magnetic-field tunable crystal-field environment. Calculations based on single ion physics with field-induced symmetry reduction of the crystal-field environment can reproduce our data.

NMR study of Ni 50+x ⁢Ti 50-x strain glasses

Here, we studied Ni 50+x ⁢Ti 50-x with compositions up to x = 2, performing 47 Ti and 49 Ti nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements from 4 to 400 K. For large x in this system, a strain glass appears in which frozen ferroelastic nanodomains replace the displacive martensite structural transition. Here, we demonstrate that NMR can provide an extremely effective probe of the strain-glass freezing process, with large changes in NMR line shape due to the effects of random strains which become motionally narrowed at high temperatures. At the same time with high-resolution x-ray diffraction we confirm the lack of structural changes in x ≥ 1.2 samples, while we show that there is little change in the electronic behavior across the strain-glass freezing temperature. NMR spin-lattice relaxation time (T 1 ) measurements provide a further measure of the dynamics of the freezing process, and indicate a predominantly thermally activated behavior both above and below the strain-glass freezing temperature. We show that the strain-glass results are consistent with a very small density of critically divergent domains undergoing a Vogel-Fulcher-type freezing process, coexisting with domains exhibiting faster dynamics and stronger pinning.

Dynamical Scaling as a Signature of Multiple Phase Competition in Yb 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7

Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 is a celebrated example of a pyrochlore magnet with highly frustrated, anisotropic exchange interactions. To date, attention has largely focused on its unusual, static properties, many of which can be understood as coming from the competition between different types of magnetic order. Here, in this work, we use inelastic neutron scattering with exceptionally high energy resolution to explore the dynamical properties of Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 . We find that spin correlations exhibit dynamical scaling, analogous to behavior found near to a quantum critical point. We show that the observed scaling collapse can be explained within a phenomenological theory of multiple-phase competition, and confirm that a scaling collapse is also seen in semiclassical simulations of a microscopic model of Yb 2 ⁢Ti 2 ⁢O 7 . These results suggest that dynamical scaling may be general to systems with competing ground states.

Anomalous proximitized transport in metal/quantum magnet heterostructure Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 /Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7

Fluctuations of quantum spins play a crucial role in the emergence of exotic magnetic phases and excitations. The lack of the charge degree of freedom in insulating quantum magnets, however, precludes such fluctuations from mediating electronic transport. Here, we show that the quantum fluctuations of a localized frustrated magnet induce strong proximitized charge transport of the conduction electrons in a synthetic heterostructure comprising an epitaxial Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 ultrathin film on a single crystal of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . The proximity effects are evidenced by the scaling behavior of the Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 resistance in correspondence with the dynamic scaling of the dynamic spincorrelation function of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 , which is a result of quantum fluctuations near a multiphase quantum critical point. The proximitized transport in Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 can be effectively tuned by a magnetic field through suppressing the quantum spin fluctuations (QSFs) as well as inducing transitions via magnetic anisotropy in Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . In this study, we establish a pathway for harnessing QSFs in magnetic insulators with electric transport, offering exciting prospects for potential applications in the realm of quantum spintronics.

Hybridized kagome bands and induced Ti magnetism in RTi3Bi4 (R = Nd, Sm, Gd) kagome metals studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

Kagome materials are known for hosting emergent quantum phenomena driven by the interaction between different lattice, charge and spin orders. Here, we present a detailed angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), density functional theory (DFT) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study of the electronic and magnetic structure of RTi3Bi4 (R = Nd, Sm, Gd). ARPES and DFT demonstrate that the bulk electronic band structure is dominated by the hybridization of the Ti bands, and the weak electron-like pocket at Γ is identified as a surface state. The isotropic XAS profile of the M 4,5-edge of the rare earth is consistent with the presence of R 3+ oxidation state. Using the XMCD sum rules, backed by the atomic multiplet theory calculations, we obtain the spin and orbital magnetic moments. The Ti L2,3-edge XMCD reveals the presence of a small magnetic moment in GdTi3Bi4, presumably driven by the proximity of the Ti kagome layers to the zigzag chains of Gd, while the total magnetic moment of Gd is shared by the f and d electrons. Our combined XMCD, ARPES and DFT study brings an important piece of information to understand the spin flip transitions and anomalous Hall effect observed in the RTi3Bi4 kagome metals.

Probing Ice-Rule-Breaking Transition in Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 Thin Film by Proximitized Transport and Magnetic Torque

While the spin-ice state of bulk pyrochlores such as Dy 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 and Ho 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 has been extensively studied in the past several decades due to its unique degenerate ground state and emergent monopole excitation, whether it survives in the thin-film form remains a mystery. The limited volume of the thin-film sample makes it challenging to study the intrinsic magnetic properties. Here, we synthesized 18-nm-thick Dy 2⁢ Ti 2 ⁢O 7 thin film on yttria-stabilized zirconia with 9.5 mol% Y 2 ⁢O 3 substrate and capped it by a thin conductive Bi 2 ⁢Ir 2 ⁢O 7 layer and performed the proximitized magnetoresistance measurements. Our Letter found that the ice-rule-breaking phase transition survives but with a modified effective nearest-neighbor interaction (𝐽 eff =1.054 K) and distorted Ising spin axes (𝜀 = +0.051) compared to the bulk crystal. Furthermore, the results are supported by the simultaneously measured capacitive torque magnetometry. Our Letter demonstrates that proximitized transport is an effective tool for thin films of insulating frustrated magnets.

DSP Implementation of a Novel Recurrent Neural Network Controller into a TI Solar Microinverter

Single-phase grid-tied inverters are widely used to integrate small-scale renewable energy sources and distributed generations to the utility grid. A novel Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) current controller is introduced to solve the resonant problem associated with LCL based inverters. The well-trained RNN controller was validated through a Texas Instruments (TI) LCL filter based solar microinverter kit that contains a C2000 TI microcontroller. The inverter closed current loop test without the grid connection was conducted in a laboratory setup to verify the RNN contoller functionality. The laboratory waveform results verified that the RNN current controller produced the strong tracking of the measured inverter AC current to its reference value even at a low sampling frequency of 5KHz. The proposed RNN current controller also proved to perform better than the built-in three-pole-three-zero (3P3Z) current controller provided by TI and produce lower values of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).

Effect of Hot Isostatic Pressing on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Additively Manufactured Ti Alloys

A previous SAND report, SAND2020-11353 described the basic metallurgical and surface roughness properties of additively manufactured Ti-64 material made using a powder bed fusion process. As part of that work, material was post-processed using a hot isostatic press (HIP) to densify and heat treat the material. This report is meant as an addendum to the original report and to provide specific data on material processed with HIP. The main focus of this report is to show the effects of HIP on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AM Ti-64 and Ti-5553.

Dissimilar metal joining of Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 625

The dissimilar joining of Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 625 by using a suitable interlayer shows potential design flexibility by avoiding the brittle intermetallic phases from direct welding. These phases include NiTi , NiTi 2 , and Ni 3 Ti . The objective of this work is to facilitate laser welding of Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 625 through a vanadium interlayer to form an intermetallic free, strong, and corrosion resistant joint. Vanadium was chosen based on binary phase diagram solubilities, literature, and theoretical CalPhaD calculations in PanDat. Laser welding was systematically explored from based on beam mode, offset, power, and scan speed. Varied parameters include laser power from 325 to 650 watts, laser scan speed from 80 to 160 in/min, and beam offset up to a ¼ of the beam diameter. Parameters were chosen based on previous dissimilar joining research and those found in the literature. Metallography, including optical and scanning electron microscopy, was used to analyze the weld chemical composition, grain structure, and defects through both the fusion and heat affected zones. The results and discussion will examine the relationship between process parameters, microstructure, and observed weld defects. Our findings will not only assess the weldability of vanadium and Inconel 625 but also establish a transferable framework for studying other dissimilar material combinations, providing valuable insights for future research in this field.

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Low-Density Al 20+x Cr 20-x Mo 20-y Ti 20 V 20+y Alloys

Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) Al 20+x Cr 20-x Mo 20-y Ti 20 V 20+y ((x, y) = (0, 0), (0, 10), and (10, 15)) were computationally studied to obtain a low density and a better mechanical property. The density functional theory (DFT) method was employed to compute the structural and mechanical properties of the alloys, based on a large unit cell model of randomly distributed elements. Debye–Grüneisen theory was used to study the thermal properties of Al 20+x Cr 20-x Mo 20-y Ti 20 V 20+y . The phase diagram calculation shows that all three RHEAs have a single body-centered cubic (BCC) structure at high temperatures ranging from 1000 K to 2000 K. The RHEA Al 30 Cr 10 Mo 5 Ti 20 V 35 has shown a low density of 5.16 g/cm 3 and a hardness of 5.56 GPa. The studied RHEAs could be potential candidates for high-temperature application materials where high hardness, ductility, and low density are required.

In Situ Synchrotron X-ray Micro-Diffraction Investigation of Elastic Strains in Laminated Ti-Al Composites

Spatially resolved elastic strains in the bulk interior of a laminated Ti-Al metal composite were studied during in situ tensile loading at strains up to 1.66% by a synchrotron-based micro-diffraction technique, namely differential aperture X-ray microscopy (DAXM). For both Al and Ti grains, deviatoric elastic strains were estimated based on polychromatic X-ray microbeam diffraction, while lattice strains along the normal direction of the tensile sample were directly measured using monochromatic X-ray microbeam diffraction. The estimated deviatoric strains show large spatial variations, and the mean values are consistent with the external loading conditions, i.e., increasing tensile strain along the tensile direction and increasing compressive strain along the sample normal with increasing loading. The directly measured lattice strains also show large spatial variations, although the magnitude of this variation is smaller than that for the estimated deviatoric strain. The directly measured lattice strains in Ti grains are largely consistent with the external loading, whereas those in Al grains are in contradiction with the external loading. The causes of the experimental results are discussed and related to both the laminated microstructure of the composite material and the limitations of the techniques.
