Anorthosite 60015 contains the lowest initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio (0.69884 + or - 0.00004) yet reported for a lunar sample. The initial ratio is equal to that of the achondrite Angra dos Reis and slightly higher than the lowest measured Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio for an inclusion in the C3 carbonaceous chondrite Allende. The Pb-Pb ages of both Angra dos Reis and Allende are 4.62 x 10 to the 9th power years (4.62 billion years). Thus, the initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio found in lunar anorthosite 60015 strongly supports the hypothesis that the age of the moon is about 4.65 b.y. The U-238/Pb-204 value estimated for the source of the excess lead in orange soil 74220 is lower than the values estimated for the sources of KREEP (600-1000), high K (300-600) and low K (100-300) basalts.
The investigation reported continues a study conducted by Tera et al. (1974). An attempt is made to summarize all of the data currently available in the literature on terra materials and to discuss the implications of the upper intersection with the concordia curve. Data on total rocks and some plagioclase separates are presented in a graph. The data appear to give further support to a model of a terminal lunar cataclysm associated with intense global bombardment at about 3.9 aeons.

Anorthosite 60015 contains the lowest initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio yet reported for a lunar sample. The initial ratio is equal to that of the achondrite Angra dos Reis and slightly higher than the lowest measured Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio for an inclusion in the C3 carbonaceous chondrite Allende. The Pb-Pb ages of both Angra does Reis and Allende are 4.62 X 10 to the ninth power yr. Thus, the initial Sr/87/Sr-86 ratio found in lunar anorthosite 60015 strongly supports the hypothesis that the age of the Moon is about 4.65 b.y. The U-238/Pb-204 value estimated for the source of the excess lead in "orange soil" 74220 is approximately 35 and lower than the values estimated for the sources of KREEP (600-1000), high-K (300-600), and low-K (100-300) basalts. From these and other physical, chemical and petrographic results it was hypothesized that (1) the moon formed approximately 4.65 b.y. ago; (2) a global-scale gravitational differentiation occurred at the beginning of lunar history; and (3) the differentiation resulted in a radical chemical and mineralogical zoning in which the U-238/Pb-204 ratios increased toward the surface, with the exception of the low U-238/Pb-204 surficial anorthositic layer which "floated" at the beginning of the differentiation relative to the denser pyroxene-rich material.
Reasonable assumptions concerning activity coefficients allow the calculation of the relative volatility of the actinide elements under conditions expected during the early history of the solar system. Several of the light rare earths have volatilities similar to Pu and Cm and can be used as indicators of the degree of fractionation of these extinct elements. Uranium is considerably more volatile than either Pu or Cm, leading to fractionations of about a factor of 50 and 90 in the Pu/U and Cm/U ratio in the earliest condensates from the solar nebula. Ca,Al-rich inclusions from the Allende meteorite, including the coarse-grained inclusions, have a depletion of U relative to La of about a factor of three, suggesting that these inclusions may have been isolated from the nebular gas before condensation of U was complete. The inclusions, however, can be used to determine solar Pu/U and Cm/U ratios if the rare earth patterns are determined in addition to the other normal measurements.

Results are presented for gamma-ray burst observations with the Large Area Sky Survey instrument on HEAO-1. It is noted that during the time HEAO-1 was operational, the instrument detected at least 12 confirmed gamma-ray bursts with intensities greater than 3 microerg/sq cm and identified six additional unconfirmed bursts. The rates of gamma-ray bursts are estimated to be about 125 per yr for intensities greater than 3 microerg/sq cm and approximately 50 per yr for intensities greater than 10 microerg/yr. The data are shown to yield a log N - log S relation for gamma-ray bursts that is consistent with a spherical distribution of sources within the Galaxy and having a broad range of intrinsic luminosities.
Solar wind disturbances caused by successive flares from the same active region are traced to about 20 AU, using the modeling method developed by Hakamada and Akasofu (1982). It is shown that the flare-generated shock waves coalesce with the co-rotating interaction region of the interplanetary magnetic field, resulting in a large-scale magnetic field structure in the outer heliosphere. Such a structure may have considerable effects on the propagation of galactic cosmic rays.
The isotopic composition of Pb from Shergotty, Zagami, and EETA 79001 meteorites was determined for different phases. Using phases with low U-238/Pb-204 ratio, the initial leads of these meteorites were defined. Samples from all three meteorites were shown to have distinct initial leads, and, thus to have evolved from different reservoirs over most of solar system history in a low U-238/Pb-204 environment. It follows that the parent planet of the shergottites has a high Pb-204 concentration relative to U and must also be high in other volatiles. The possibility of the Martian origin of the SNC-type meteorites is discussed.
Isotope and trace element geochemistry of Precambrian mantle derived rocks and implications for the formation of the continental crust is discussed. Epsilon Nd values of Archean komatiites are variable, but range up to at least +5, suggesting that the Archean mantle was heterogeneous and, in part, very depleted as far back as 3.4 to 3.5 Ga. This may be taken as evidence for separation of continental crust very early in Earth history. If these komatiite sources were allowed to evolve in a closed system, they would produce modern day reservoirs with much higher epsilon Nd values than is observed. This implies recycling of some sort of enriched material, perhaps subducted sediments, although other possibilities exist. Archean volcanics show lower Nb/Th than modern volcanics, suggesting a more primitive mantle source than that observed nowadays. However, Cretaceous komatiites from Gorgona island have similar Nb/Th to Archean volcanics, indicating either the Archean mantle source was indeed more primitive, or Archean magmas were derived from a deep ocean island source like that proposed for Gorgona.
Infrared spectra of NO2 recorded during a recent flight of the Balloon-borne Laser In-Situ Sensor instrument have been analyzed to determine sensitivity limits for various signal integration times. Implications for direct detection of ClO, HOCl, H2O2, COF2, OH, and HO2 are discussed.
A pristine high-Mg noritic cumulate thought to be relict deep-seated lunar crust is studied with an eye to obtaining evidence of initial Pb isotopic composition and U/Pb ratios of early lunar magma sources and possibly of a primary magma ocean. A leaching procedure was conducted on polymineralic separates to assure the removal of secondary Pb components. The Pb from leached separates do not form a linear trend on the Pb-Pb diagram, indicating open-system behavior either from mixtures of Pb or postcrystallization disturbances. Calculated initial Pb compositions and corresponding U-238/Pb-204 (mu) values are presented, with the assumption of reasonably precise radiometric ages from the literature for norite 78236. The results obtained support the contention that high-Mg suite rocks are coeval with the ferroan anorthosites, both being produced during the earliest stages of lunar evolution.
How do you store enough of the key data sets, from a total of 120 gigabytes of data collected for a scientific experiment, on a collection of CD-ROM's, small enough to distribute to a broad scientific community? In such an application where information loss in unacceptable, lossless compression algorithms are the only choice. Although lossy compression algorithms can provide an order of magnitude improvement in compression ratios over lossless algorithms the information that is lost is often part of the key scientific precision of the data. Therefore, lossless compression algorithms are and will continue to be extremely important in minimizing archiving storage requirements and distribution of large earth and space (ESS) data sets while preserving the essential scientific precision of the data.
