Nature of the bonded-to-atomic transition in liquid silica to TPa pressures

First-principles calculations and analysis of the thermodynamic, structural, and electronic properties of liquid SiO 2 characterize the bonded-to-atomic transition at 0.1–1.6 TPa and 10 4 –10 5 K (1–9 eV), the high-energy-density regime relevant to understanding planetary interiors. We find strong ionic bonds that become short-lived due to high kinetics during the transition, with sensitivity of the transition temperature to pressure, and our calculated Hugoniots agree with past experimental data. Furthermore, these results reconcile previous experimental and theoretical findings by clarifying the nature of the bond dissociation process in early Earth and “rocky” (oxide) constituents of large planets.

Single-shot imaging with randomized structured illumination at a free electron laser

Stroboscopic nanoscale imaging with free electron laser light is revolutionizing our understanding of fast dynamics in heterogeneous systems. The short wavelength of X-ray and extreme ultraviolet radiation makes it possible to achieve nanoscale resolution, while resonance with atomic transitions gives access to electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. Here, we report on our implementation of a recently developed imaging method, randomized probe imaging, at a free electron laser. The advantage of randomized probe imaging over existing methods is its compatibility with extended and strongly scattering samples. Our implementation delivers robust single-shot reconstructions at up to a full-pitch resolution of 400 nm over a field of view with a 40 µm diameter. We also demonstrate single-shot imaging of magnetic domain structures using circular dichroism at resonance, paving the way to future time-resolved studies of magnetic dynamics, shock physics, and the dynamics of collective electronic phases.

Hybrid particle-in-cell simulations of electromagnetic coupling and waves from streaming burst debris

Various systems can be modeled as a point-like explosion of ionized debris into a magnetized, collisionless background plasma-including astrophysical examples, active experiments in space, and laser-driven laboratory experiments. Debris streaming from the explosion parallel to the magnetic field may drive multiple resonant and non-resonant ion-ion beam instabilities, some of which can efficiently couple the debris energy to the background and may even support the formation of shocks. We present a large-scale hybrid (kinetic ions + fluid electrons) particle-in-cell simulation, extending hundreds of ion inertial lengths from a 3D explosion, that resolves these instabilities. We show that the character of these instabilities differs notably from the 1D equivalent by the presence of unique transverse structure. Additional 2D simulations explore how the debris beam length, width, density, and speed affect debris-background coupling, with implications for the generation of quasi-parallel shocks.
