Unveiling enhanced oxidation resistance and mechanical integrity of multicomponent ultra–high temperature carbides

The development of a new class of multicomponent ultra-high temperature ceramics (MC-UHTCs), often referred to as high-entropy UHTCs, has gained increased interest due to the possibility of improved thermomechanical and oxidation properties. In this study, a systematic approach by gradual addition in the UHTC components ranging from a binary to a dense quaternary (Ta,Nb,Hf,Ti)C is synthesized using spark plasma sintering (SPS). The solid solutioning was the critical factor in homogenizing the composition in the multicomponent system. The segregation of NbC and HfC was seen in binary and ternary UHTC systems, while a single-phase homogeneity was observed in the quaternary UHTC improving its hardness up to 34.8 GPa. The presence of closely spaced slip lines in the MC-UHTCs enhances resistance to indentation damage up to 72% at an applied load of 200 N. The formation of complex mixed oxide phase of Hf6Ta2O17 ensued in the lower to negligible oxidation even up to 3 min of plasma exposure with temperature exceeding 2800°C. In sum, though the entropy remains medium (0.96R) for the selected system, the quaternary UHTC system undoubtedly has significantly better thermomechanical performance when compared to established baseline UHTCs. Furthermore, this raises the debate on the justification for calling a multicomponent system a “high entropy” to be seen in a new light. The developed MC-UHTCs elicits the paradigm of this new class of UHTCs expanding their potential in thermal protection systems for hypersonic applications.

The Solar Power Satellite concept - Towards the future

An evolutionary program phasing with respect to the development of a Solar Power Satellite (SPS) is considered, taking into account concept identification, concept evaluation, exploratory research, space technology projects, system development, and commercial operations. At the present time the concept evaluation phase of the program is underway. This phase is scheduled for completion in 1980. It will result in a recommendation as to whether the concept should be explored further and if so, in what manner. The recommendation will be based on technical feasibility, economic and environmental considerations, and comparisons with other potential systems of the future. It is premature to speculate on the conclusions and recommendations from the evaluation program as to whether the program should proceed to the next phase.

The applicability of MFD thrusters to satellite power systems

The high power self field MPD thruster uses electromagnetic forces rather than electrostatic to accelerate a neutral plasma. The most attractive application of MPD thrusters to satellite power systems is in the area of electric propulsion for a cargo orbit transfer vehicle (COTV). Calculations were performed in order to compare the performance of a COTV using an ion or MPD propulsion system. Results show that the MPD propulsion system gives a shorter trip time with the same power and payload when compared to the ion thruster propulsion system at either value of specific impulse. More important than the trip time benefit may be the advantage a MPD propulsion system provides in system simplicity. Another interesting COTV concept using MPD thrusters is the use of a remote power supply located on the Earth, at GEO, or somewhere in between to transmit power to the COTV in a microwave transmission. The specific impulse at thrust levels of tens of newtons makes a MPD propulsion system a candidate for stationkeeping and attitude control of large space structures such as a SPS.

Modified reference SPS with solid state transmitting antenna

The motivations for considering solid state microwave power amplifiers for the solar power satellite transmitting antenna are the possibilities of greatly increased system reliability due to elimination of electron tube cathodes, a lower mass per unit power and transmitting array area due to the high power densities obtainable in semiconductors, and, probably, cost savings due to development of small hardware items that can be handled by individuals instead of organizations. In order to provide a fair assessment where we stand today with regard to solid state SPS technology, the design described here is close to that of the NASA/DOE reference and is implemented using today's solid state technology with only a small "push". The small push is raising the efficiency of DC-RF conversion from the .68 obtained by RCA in 1975 to somewhat over .8 of the solid state SPS. This is generally considered feasible by semiconductor industry representatives. Other solid state SPS configurations can yield somewhat better performance. However, these generally do not provide as fair a vehicle for comparison with the reference and usually also incorporate somewhat more advanced technologies.

Spectral phase singularity and topological behavior in perfect absorption

Perfect absorbers, which can achieve total absorption of all incoming energy, have been extensively studied in the last decades for various important technologies in general wave systems. Here, we show that perfect absorption (PA) is generically associated with topological spectral phase singularity (SPS), carrying conserved and tunable quantized topological invariants in spectral space. The order of topological invariant $\tilde{v}$ depends on the number of degenerate outgoing channels. Two commonly studied absorbers, mirror-backed and all-dielectric structures, are reexamined from a topological perspective to reveal the generation, evolution, and annihilation of SPSs with $\tilde{v}$ = ±1 or even high orders (i.e., $\tilde{v}$ = ±2,±4). A strategy based on charge conservation of SPSs to design dual-band perfect absorbers has been established. Our findings establish the topological origin of the robust existence of PA. More broadly, in this letter, we highlight topology as the fundamental property of conventional scattering behaviors. Finally, this insight could lead to opportunities in applications such as biosensing, topological metasurfaces, and micro/nano thermal radiation.

Satellite Power Study (SPS) concept definition study (Exhibit D). Volume 1: Executive summary

Efforts concentrated on updating of the Rockwell reference concept, definition of new system options, studies of special emphasis topics, further definition of the transportation system, and further program definition. The Rockwell reference satellite concept has a gallium arsenide (GaAs) solar cell array having flat concentrators with an effective concentration ratio of 1.83at end of life. Alternatives to this concept includes solid state power amplifiers or magnetrons for dc/RF conversion and multibandgap solar cells for solar to dc energy conversion. Two solid state concepts were studied. It was determined that the magnetron approach was the lowest mass and cost system.

Saddle point search with dynamic active volume

Sampling potential energy surface (PES) is critical for many problems in materials science, chemistry, physics, and biology and requires highly efficient saddle point searches (SPS). In the study, we introduce the concept of dynamic active volume (DAV) in addition to the active volume in self-evolving atomistic kinetic Monte Carlo (SEAKMC). The DAV method has further reduced the dimensionality of the PES at the elevation stage of a SPS. At the subsequent converging stage, the dynamic boundary in DAV is lifted to allow the system to converge to the right location of a saddle point. Coupled with the dimer method, the DAV method not only significantly reduces the time cost for a given search attempt, but also dramatically increases the probability of finding relevant saddle points for PES sampling. Further, a Python software package within the framework SEAKMC (SEAKMC_py) with the DAV method has been developed.

Potential of laser for SPS power transmission

Research on the feasibility of using a laser subsystem as an additional option for the transmission of the satellite power system (STS) power is presented. Current laser work and predictions for future laser performance provide a level of confidence that the development of a laser power transmission system is technologically feasible in the time frame required to develop the SBS. There are significant economic advantages in lower ground distribution costs and a reduction of more than two orders of magnitude in real estate requirements for ground based receiving/conversion sites.

Satellite power systems structures: A 1980 technology status review

The classes of major structural components and constructions utilized were considered. A review of the current (SPS) structure technology status was made. The major issues considered pertinent to SPS structures are: Cost effective construction, construction materials, structural design requirements, stress and dimensional integrity of as-built structures, and predictability of strength and dynamic behavior. The feasibility of passive figure control approach to MPTS flatness, of structure stiffness compatible with MPTS pointing, of passive control through damping, and the feasibility of space fabrication of ultra-large reflector surfaces are also considered. Qualification, model verification, inspection are considered of vital concern.

Two-pion femtoscopic correlations in Be+Be collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}} = 16.84$ GeV measured by the NA61/SHINE at CERN

This paper reports measurements of two-pion femtoscopic correlations in Be+Be collisions at a beam momentum of 150$A\,\hbox {GeV}\!/\!c$ (energy available in the center-of-mass system for nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}} = 16.84$ GeV) by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. The obtained momentum space correlation functions can be well described by a Lévy distributed source model. The transverse mass dependence of the Lévy source parameters is presented, and their possible theoretical interpretations are discussed. The results show that the Lévy exponent $\alpha $ is approximately constant as a function of $m_{\text {T}}$ , and far from both the Gaussian case of $\alpha = 2$ or the conjectured value at the critical endpoint, $\alpha = 0.5$. The radius scale parameter R shows a slight decrease in $m_{\text {T}}$ , which can be explained as a signature of transverse flow. Finally, an approximately constant trend of the intercept parameter $\lambda $ as a function of $m_{\text {T}}$ was observed, similar to previous NA44 S + Pb results (obtained with a Gaussian approximation, but unlike RHIC results).

The Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS): Experiment Data Distribution

The six sensors of SEIS (The Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure) [- one of three primary instruments on NASA's Mars Lander Insight] cover a broad range of the seismic bandwidth, from 0.01 hertz to 50 hertz, with possible extension to longer periods. Data are transmitted in the form of three continuous VBB (Very Broad-Band) components at 2 samples per second (sps), an estimation of the short period (SP) energy content from the SP at 1 sps, and a continuous compound VBB/SP vertical axis at 10 sps. The continuous streams are augmented by requested event data with sample rates from 20 to 100 sps. SEIS data products are downlinked from the spacecraft in raw CCSDS (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) packets and converted to both the Standard for the Exchange of Earthquake Data (SEED) format files and ASCII tables (GeoCSV) for analysis and archiving. Metadata are available in dataless SEED and StionXML. Time series data (waveforms) are available in miniseed and GeoCSV. Data are distributed according to FDSN (Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks - http://www.fdsn.org) formats and interfaces. Wind, pressure and temperature data from the Auxiliary Payload Sensor Suite (APSS) will also be available in SEED format, and can be used for decorrelation and diagnostic purposes on SEIS.
