Development and Future of the Ten Simple Rules for Credible Practice of Models and Simulations in HealthCare

In this session, we will review the development and implementation history of the Ten Simple Rules (TSR) for credible practice in models and simulations that support healthcare. Our focus will be initially on the need and background for the Committee on Credible Practice of Models and Simulations in Healthcare (CPMS) as well as the TSR development process and implementation. This will flow into a demonstration of how the TSR has evolved as means of communicating and understanding the model development process, likely successful application and where the model could fail. We will end this presentation with a discussion on future development avenue, the CPMS efforts to develop a comprehensive rubric supporting current TSR implementation, and efforts to support further adoption of the TSR. The audience will be encouraged to comment on the current state of the TSR, share their TSR application experiences, and provide their insights on future development.

Experimental Characterization of Non-Associative Plasticity Flow Rule Coefficients and Post-Peak Stress Degradation for the LS-DYNA MAT213 Model

This project is focused on developing an experimental framework for characterizing non-associative plasticity flow rule coefficients through coupon-scale tests for the LS-DYNA MAT213 model. The main objective is to characterize these coefficients based on the multi-scale (i.e., both microscopic and macroscopic) full-field measurement of the evolution of strain and stress fields. This paper focuses on presenting the experimental work on characterizing the full-scale stress-strain curves of T700/LM-PAEK composites under tension, compression, and shear loads. The experimental data set was intended to build a deformation sub-model in the MAT213 model for the material. The strain data were collected using both microscopic and macroscopic digital image correlation techniques. The microscopic technique was particularly useful for fracture cases under small strains. A preliminary simulation result obtained from the MAT213 model is also presented in the paper. The experimental framework herein will be extended to characterize post-peak stress degradation in the composite material and to develop a damage sub-model for the material. This project will contribute to developing a simulation tool based on the MAT213 model for simulating the rate-dependent impact damage in composites under multi-axial loading.

Group theoretical selection rules for electron-impact spectroscopy.

Simple group theoretical principles are applied to the consideration of electron scattering off atoms and diatomic and polyatomic molecules. This approach is also used to estimate relative strengths of electron-impact-induced transitions of diatomic and polyatomic molecules.

Active controls - Changing the rules of structural design.

Approaches making use of aerodynamic surfaces in combination with advanced flight computers, and electrohydraulic systems could be used to improve economics of commercial aircraft operation, smooth the passenger's ride, reduce terminal-area noise, and ease terminal-area congestion. This emerging technology is becoming known as active controls technology. Maximum benefits from active controls can come only by considering controls early in the design cycle. Active controls can save weight by reducing the structural strength necessary. Some of the technical benefits of active controls would increase return on investment and raise profits. Details of a proposed active controls research program are discussed.
