Synthesis of perovskite polyhedron nanocrystals with equivalent facets and the controlled growth of Pt nanoparticles with differing surface concentration of oxidized Pt 4+ /Pt 2+ species

Co-existence of different surfaces in traditional polycrystalline heterogeneous catalysts imposes a challenge to induce different kinds of catalytic species and average reactivity. Supported metal/oxide model catalyst designed with equivalent well-defined surfaces and active species provides an opportunity to control the uniformity, maintain efficient activity, and understand catalytic mechanisms at the atomic and molecular levels. Herein, sub-20 nm perovskite-structure BaTiO 3 polyhedron nanocuboids and Zr-substituted rhombic dodecahedron nanocrystals were synthesized and employed as the oxide support for the subsequent uniform growth of 1–2 nm Pt nanoparticles. These Pt nanoparticles were well dispersed on the 12 equivalent (110) facets of BaTi 0.75 Zr 0.25 O 3 rhombic dodecahedra and on the 6 equivalent (100) facets of BaTiO 3 nanocuboids. The main active centers on the Pt/BaTi 0.75 Zr 0.25 O 3 catalysts in the oxidized surface layer of Pt (111) facets are Pt 4+ versus Pt 2+ , which is in contrast to the oxidized surface layer of the Pt (100) facets on the Pt/BaTiO 3 cuboids where there are a greater number of Pt 2+ species. Compared with Pt/BaTiO 3 nanocuboids, the Pt/BaTi 0.75 Zr 0.25 O 3 catalysts demonstrated higher CO catalytic oxidation activity with a lower apparent Arrhenius activation energy. Finally, this work advances our ability to synthesize metal/oxide model catalyst that offer equivalent facets and highly uniform active centers with reasonable surface area in order to gain insight in reaction mechanisms.

Single-Photon-Induced Electron Spin Polarization of Two Exchange-Coupled Stable Radicals

Transient electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to probe photoinduced electron spin polarization of a stable exchange-coupled organic biradical in a Pt(II) complex comprising 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 3,6-bis(ethynyl-para-phenyl-nitronyl nitroxide)-o-catecholate (CAT(o-C$\equiv$C-Ph-NN) 2 ). Photoexcitation results in four unpaired spins in excited states of this complex, with spins being localized on each of the two radicals, CAT •+ and bpy •– . The four spins are all exchange-coupled in these excited states, and an off-diagonal matrix element in the CAT •+ -NN exchange allows for exchange-enhanced intersystem crossing to the 3 T 1a state, which possesses (bpy •– )Pt(CAT •+ ) chromophoric triplet character. Further, fast mixing between this 3 T 1a state and other thermally accessible excited LL'CT state(s) followed by fast relaxation provides spin polarization of the exchange-coupled NN radicals in the 3 S 0 ground state of the complex. Our results demonstrate that well-defined quantum states of a ground-state biradical can be initialized with single-photon excitation and have the potential for further spin manipulation directed toward quantum information science applications.

High-entropy halide perovskite single crystals stabilized by mild chemistry

High entropy materials are excellent candidates for a range of functional materials but traditionally require high-temperature synthetic procedures over 1000°C and complex processing techniques such as hot rolling to form. One route to address the extreme synthetic requirements for high entropy materials should involve designing crystal structures with ionic bonding networks and low cohesive energies. Here, we develop room-temperature (20°C) and low temperature (80°C) solution synthesis procedures for a new class of metal-halide perovskite high entropy semiconductor (HES) single crystals. Due to the soft, ionic lattice nature of the class of metal-halide perovskites, these HES single crystals are designed on the cubic Cs 2 MCl 6 (M = Zr 4+ , Sn 4+ , Te 4+ , Hf 4+ , Re 4+ , Os 4+ , Ir 4+ , or Pt 4+ ) vacancy-ordered double perovskite structure from the self-assembly of stabilized complexes in multielement inks, namely free Cs + cations and five or six different isolated [MCl6] 2- anionic octahedral molecules well-mixed in strong hydrochloric acid. The resulting single-phase single crystals span two HES families of five- and six-elements occupying the M-site as a random alloy in near-equimolar ratios, with the overall Cs 2 MCl 6 crystal structure and stoichiometry maintained. In conclusion, the incorporation of various [MCl 6 ] 2- octahedral molecular orbitals disordered across the high entropy five- and six-element Cs 2 MCl 6 single crystals produces complex vibrational and electronic structures with energy transfer interactions between the confined exciton states of the five or six different isolated octahedral molecules.

Non-linear flow modes of identified particles in Pb-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

The pT-differential non-linear flow modes, v 4,22 , v 5,32 , v 6,33 and v 6,222 for π ± , K ± , K$^0_S$ , $p + \bar{p}, Λ + \bar{Λ}$ and ϕ-meson have been measured for the first time at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV in Pb-Pb collisions with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The results were obtained with a multi-particle technique, correlating the identified hadrons with reference charged particles from a different pseudorapidity region. These non-linear observables probe the contribution from the second and third order initial spatial anisotropy coefficients to higher flow harmonics. All the characteristic features observed in previous p T -differential anisotropic flow measurements for various particle species are also present in the non-linear flow modes, i.e. increase of magnitude with increasing centrality percentile, mass ordering at low p T and particle type grouping in the intermediate p T range. Hydrodynamical calculations (iEBE-VISHNU) that use different initial conditions and values of shear and bulk viscosity to entropy density ratios are confronted with the data at low transverse momenta. These calculations exhibit a better agreement with the anisotropic flow coefficients than the non-linear flow modes. These observations indicate that non-linear flow modes can provide additional discriminatory power in the study of initial conditions as well as new stringent constraints to hydrodynamical calculations.

Fabrication of Large-Area Metal-on-Carbon Catalytic Condensers for Programmable Catalysis

Catalytic condensers stabilize charge on either side of a high-k dielectric film to modulate the electronic states of a catalytic layer for the electronic control of surface reactions. Here, carbon sputtering provided for fast, large-scale fabrication of metal–carbon catalytic condensers required for industrial application. Carbon films were sputtered on HfO 2 dielectric/p-type Si with different thicknesses (1, 3, 6, and 10 nm), and the enhancement of conductance and capacitance of carbon films was observed upon increasing the carbon thickness following thermal treatment at 400 °C. After Pt deposition on the carbon films, the Pt catalytic condenser exhibited a high capacitance of ∼210 nF/cm 2 that was maintained at a frequency ∼1000 Hz, satisfying the requirement for a dynamic catalyst to implement catalytic resonance. Temperature-programmed desorption of carbon monoxide yielded CO desorption peaks that shifted in temperature with the varying potential applied to the condenser (−6 or +6 V), indicating a shift in the binding energy of carbon monoxide on the Pt condenser surface. A substantial increase in capacitance (∼2000 nF/cm 2 ) of the Pt-on-carbon devices was observed at elevated temperatures of 400 °C that can modulate ∼10% of charge per metal atom when 10 V potential was applied. A large catalytic condenser of 42 cm 2 area Pt/C/HfO 2 /Si exhibited a high capacitance of 9393 nF with a low leakage current/capacitive current ratio (<0.1), demonstrating the practicality and versatility of the facile, large-scale fabrication method for metal–carbon catalytic condensers.

Numerous thermal neutron scattering kernels were reevaluated or provided for the very first time. On the covariance side, work was undertaken to introduce better uncertainty quantification standards and testing for nuclear data covariances. The significant effort to reevaluate important nuclides has reduced bias in the simulations of many integral experiments with particular progress noted for fluorine, copper, and stainless steel containing benchmarks. Data issues hindered the successful deployment of the previous ENDF/B-VIII.0 for commercial nuclear power applications in high burnup situations. These issues were addressed by improving the 238 U and 239,240,241 Pu evaluated data in the resonance region. The new library performance as a function of burnup is similar to the reference ENDF/B-VII.1 library.
