Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy of the surface chemistry of furfural on Pd(111)

The hydrolysis and subsequent acidic dehydration of biomass leads to the production of smaller oxygenates, including furfural, which can undergo subsequent reactions such as hydrogenation to produce value-added products. Palladium has been found to be an active catalyst for this process. As a result, the surface chemistry of furfural is investigated on a Pd(111) single-crystal surface using reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy as a basis for understanding the catalytic conversion of furfural to value-added products. Following adsorption at 90 K, furfural adopts a flat-lying geometry at low coverages, but converts to a tilted species as the coverage approaches saturation. Heating to ~175 K forms a tilted η 1 (O) species that appears to deprotonate on heating to above 200 K to form an intermediate with a tilted furyl ring and a carbonyl group close to parallel to the surface. Further heating to ~250 K and above caused this species to decarbonylate to form adsorbed carbon monoxide and an infrared invisible furyl intermediate. This can then undergo a ring-opening reaction to produce further CO and form a C 3 H 3 intermediate that can hydrogenate to produce propylene. Finally, this reaction sequence is in good agreement with previous density functional theory calculations and with the products observed in temperature-programmed desorption.

Magnetic transition behavior in epitaxial Fe 47 Rh 47 Pd 6 films

The properties of Fe–Rh–Pd epitaxial thin films grown on MgO(001) were studied as a function of growth temperature. Films grown above 400°C exhibit a first-order antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic magnetic phase transition with a transition temperature that decreases as the growth temperature is increased. The chemical order parameter computed from the ratio of intensities of the (001) and (002) diffraction peaks is nearly independent of the growth temperature, while the lattice constants change slightly. A comparison of our structural, magnetic, and electrical transport results with first-principle-based calculations as well as literature results indicates that the transition temperature of Fe–Rh-based alloy films depends sensitively on the lattice parameters and is of electronic origin. The transition temperature and its width can be tuned over a wide range by controlling the crystal structure via growth conditions or postdeposition annealing.

Impact of Primary and Secondary ZDDP and Ionic Liquid as Lubricant Oil Additives on the Performance and Physicochemical Properties of Pd-Based Three-Way Catalysts

In the present study, two industry primary and secondary zinc dialkyldithiophosphate standards, ZDDP1 and ZDDP2, respectively, are evaluated for their impact on the performance of Pd-based three-way catalyst and bench-marked against two mixed lubricant additives formed from either ZDDP1 or ZDDP2 with a second-generation oil-miscible phosphoric-containing ionic liquid (IL). The three-way catalysts (TWCs) are exposed to the lubricant additives in an engine bench under four different scenarios: a base case with no additive (NA), ZDDP1, IL+ZDDP1, ZDDP2, and IL+ZDDP2. The engine-aged TWC samples are characterized through a variety of analytical techniques, including evaluation of catalyst reactivity in a bench-flow reactor. With respect to the water–gas shift reaction and the oxygen storage capacity, the ZDDP2- and IL+ZDDP2-aged TWC samples are more degraded than the ZDDP1- and IL+ZDDP1-aged TWC samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicate that phosphorus in the form of CePO4 was found to be present in the washcoat of all TWC samples, with the highest amount found in the ZDDP2-aged TWC sample. The results obtained from XRD are further confirmed by those from inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), which show that more phosphorus is detected in the washcoat of ZDDP2- and IL+ZDDP2-aged TWC samples than in the ZDDP1- and IL+ZDDP1-aged TWC samples.

Actualizing Change after Experiencing Significant Mathematics PD: Hearing from Teachers of Color about Their Practice and Mathematical Identities

While it is well-documented that students of color and students from low-income communities have often been denied access to a challenging education in mathematics in the United States, less is known about how teachers of color have overcome their deprived educational backgrounds to become teachers of mathematics who implement inquiry-based instructional methods as a means to improve their students’ learning and mathematical identities. In this article, we use a sociopolitical theoretical framework to examine how seven elementary school teachers of color characterized their experiences as mathematics students, themselves as teachers of mathematics, and their mathematical identities after experiencing significant professional development in mathematics. All the participants in this study had experienced extensive professional development support in mathematics over a sustained period of time. We demonstrate through the teachers’ narratives that, given the deprived mathematics education that the majority of the participants experienced as PK-12 students, having opportunities to participate in significant and focused PD in mathematics over a sustained period transformed how teachers viewed themselves as teachers and positively impacted their mathematical identities.

Hyperfine Splitting and Nuclear Spin Polarization in NdPd 5 Al 2 and Nd 3 Pd 20 Ge 6

Here the hyperfine splitting of Nd nuclei in NdPd 5 Al 2 was studied by means of high-resolution neutron spectroscopy. We observed inelastic peaks at ℏω = ±3 µeV and T = 0.3 K, originating from the hyperfine splitting in the magnetically ordered phase owing to the hyperfine interactions between Nd nuclei (I = 7/2) and the 4f electrons with the Γ 6 ground state composed of mainly |±9/2$\rangle$. At very low temperatures, the nuclear spin of Nd is polarized with an increasing occupation probability of low energy levels and contributes to the enhancement of the antiferromagnetic Bragg intensities; the elastic non-spin-flip channel is dominant. As an application of this phenomenon, we determined the Nd moment and hyperfine splitting from the temperature dependence of an antiferromagnetic Bragg intensity for Nd 3 Pd 20 Ge 6 .

Construction of Photo‐Responsive Pd 2 L 4 ‐Type Nanocages based on Feringa's Second‐Generation Motor and Its Guest Binding Ability for C 60

Abstract We present the construction of a M 2 L 4 ‐type metal‐organic nanocage featuring four endohedral Feringa's motor motifs and its adaptive encapsulation towards a C 60 guest molecule. The structure of the cage, though complicated on the 1 H NMR spectrum due to the adoption of mixed ligands, was unambiguously characterized with a combination of ESI‐MS, 2D DOSY, 13 C NMR and particularly the SAXS technique. The molecular motor within the cage demonstrated similar photophysical properties to the uncoordinated one, indicating the motor's function was not compromised when it was anchored in such a confined nanospace. Furthermore, the nanocage showed good guest encapsulation ability towards C 60 , and a guest induced‐fit behavior of the cage was revealed based on the extensive SAXS analysis and molecular dynamics simulation. The adaptive motorized nanocage reported here represents one of the very few examples of integrating individual motors into a discrete nanoconfined system and offers prospects to achieve its non‐equilibrium functions.

Optimizing feed modulation for coupled methane and NO x conversion over Pd-Pt/Mn 0.5 Fe 2.5 O 4 /Al 2 O 3 monolith catalyst

Here the impacts of feed modulation (frequency, amplitude) and catalyst design (composition and architecture) parameters are reported for the conversion of methane and NO x over a dual-layer Pt+Pd/Al 2 O 3 + Mn 0.5 Fe 2.5 O 4 /Al 2 O 3 monolith. CH 4 and NO x conversion data show that the dual-layer catalyst outperforms single-layer samples having the same catalyst loadings, with and without spinel. Close proximity of the PGM and MFO functions in the mixed-layer catalyst lowers the CH 4 conversion at high temperature while separating the PGM and spinel layers with an intermediate Al 2 O 3 layer does not. Methane conversion enhancement is linked to its nonmonotonic dependence on O 2 . The performance gains are tied to a transient activity spike that occurs during the lean-to-rich feed transition when water is present in the feed. The transient spike is attributed to the removal of CO and H 2 products via reactions with stored O 2 in the spinel, eliminating inhibition of methane steam reforming.
