Structural transition and possible pressure-induced superconductivity in a suboxide La 5 Pb 3 O

Here, in this study, we report a structural phase transition and its interplay with superconductivity in the suboxide La 5⁢ Pb 3 ⁢O. Upon cooling through 𝑇 𝑡 = 225K, La 5⁢ Pb 3⁢ O transforms from a high-temperature 𝐼⁢4/mcm to a low-temperature 𝑃⁢4/ncc structure in which La-Pb dimerization along the 𝑐 axis occurs. This transition is accompanied by anomalies in the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity and specific heat. High-pressure electrical transport measurements reveal that hydrostatic pressure suppresses the structural transition and possibly induces superconductivity with a maximum superconducting temperature of 10 K. Density functional theory calculations show minimal changes in the electronic density of states and no gap opening at 𝐸 𝐹 across 𝑇 𝑡 , suggesting that the transition is driven by bonding effects rather than Fermi surface instability. These findings establish La 5⁢ Pb 3 ⁢O as a promising platform for exploring the interplay between weak structural transitions and superconductivity.

Equation of state, phase transitions, and band-gap closure in Pb Cl 2 and Sn Cl 2

The equations of state and band-gap closures for Pb Cl 2 and Sn Cl 2 were studied using both experimental and theoretical methods. Here we measured the volume of both materials to a maximum pressure of 70 GPa using synchrotron-based angle-dispersive powder x-ray diffraction. The lattice parameters for both compounds showed anomalous changes between 16–32 GPa, providing evidence of a phase transition from the cotunnite structure to the related Co 2 Si structure, in contrast to the postcotunnite structure as previously suggested. First-principles calculations confirm this finding and predict a second phase transition to a Co 2 Si-like structure between 75– 110 GPa in Pb Cl 2 and 60–75 GPa in Sn Cl 2 . Band gaps were measured under compression to ~70 GPa for Pb Cl 2 and ~66 GPa for Sn Cl 2 and calculated up to 200 GPa for Pb CI 2 and 120 GPa for Sn Cl 2 . We find an excellent agreement between our experimental and theoretical results when using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE06) hybrid functional, which suggests that this functional could reliably be used to calculate the band gap of similar AX 2 compounds. Experimental and calculated band-gap results show discontinuous decreases in the band gap corresponding to phase changes to higher-coordinated crystal structures, giving insight into the relationship between interatomic geometry and metallicity.

Metastable states from multinucleon excitations in 202 Tl and 203 Pb

The excited level structures of 202 Tl and 203 Pb, above the 7 + and 29/2 – isomers, respectively, have been studied. An isomer with I π = 20 + and T 1/2 = 215(10) μs has been established in 202 Tl, and the level scheme extended from I = 10 to 20ℏ with the placement of fifteen new transitions. In 203 Pb, the I π = 37/2 + state is established to be metastable, with T 1/2 = 2.5(3) ns. Levels in both nuclei arise from intrinsic excitations, with likely particle-hole character for the higher-lying states in 203 Pb. The 20 + isomer in 202 Tl is most likely associated with a $πh$ $^{–1}_{11/2}$ Ⓧ ν($i$ $^{–2}_{13/2}$, $f$ $^{–1}_{5/2}$) configuration, while the 37/2 + state in 203 Pb results from the excitation of five neutrons. Furthermore, calculations, using both an empirical approach and the oxbash code, have been performed to aid in the description of the excited level structure.

Bayesian inference of nuclear symmetry energy from measured and imagined neutron skin thickness in Sn 116 , 118 , 120 , 122 , 124 , 130 , 132 , Pb 208 , and Ca 48

The neutron skin thickness Δr np in heavy nuclei has been known as one of the most sensitive terrestrial probes of the nuclear symmetry energy E sym (ρ) around $\frac{2}{3}$ of the saturation density ρ 0 of nuclear matter. Existing neutron skin data mostly from hadronic observables suffer from large uncertainties and their extraction from experiments are often strongly model dependent. While waiting eagerly for the promised model-independent and high-precision neutron skin data for 208 Pb and 48 Ca from the parity-violating electron scattering experiments (PREX-II and CREX at JLab as well as MREX at MESA), within the Bayesian statistical framework using the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model we infer the posterior probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the slope parameter L of the nuclear symmetry energy at ρ 0 from imagined Δr np ( 208 Pb)=0.15, 0.20, and 0.30 fm with a 1σ error bar of 0.02, 0.04, and 0.06 fm, respectively, as well as Δr np ( 48 Ca)=0.12, 0.15, and 0.25 fm, with different 1σ error bar of 0.01 and 0.02 fm, respectively. The results are compared with the PDFs of L inferred using the same approach from the available Δr np data for 116, 118, 120, 122, 124, 130, 132 Sn from hadronic probes. They are also compared with results from a recent Bayesian analysis of the radius and tidal deformability data of canonical neutron stars from GW170817 and NICER. The neutron skin data for Sn isotopes gives L = 45.5 $^{+ 26.5}_{-21.6}$ MeV surrounding its mean value or L = 53 . 4 $^{+ 18.6}_{ -29.5}$ MeV surrounding its maximum a posteriori value, respectively, with the latter smaller than but consistent with the L = 66 $^{+ 12}_{-20}$ MeV from the neutron star data within their 68% confidence intervals. We found that Δr np = 0.17 –0.18 fm in 208 Pb with an error bar of about 0.02 fm leads to a PDF of L compatible with that from analyzing the Sn data. To provide additionally useful information on L extracted from the Δr np of Sn isotopes, the experimental error bar of Δr np in 208 Pb should be at least smaller than 0.06 fm aimed by some current experiments. In addition, the Δr np ( 48 Ca) needs to be larger than 0.15 fm but smaller than 0.25 fm to be compatible with the Sn and/or neutron star results. To further improve our current knowledge about L and distinguish its PDFs in the examples considered, even higher precisions leading to significantly less than ±20 MeV error bars for L at 68% confidence level are necessary.

La 4 Co 4 X ( X = Pb , Bi , Sb ) : A demonstration of antagonistic pairs as a route to quasi-low-dimensional ternary compounds

We outline how pairs of strongly immiscible elements, referred to here as antagonistic pairs, can be used to synthesize ternary compounds with low or quasi-reduced-dimensional motifs intrinsically built into their crystal structures. By identifying third elements that are mutually compatible with a given antagonistic pair, ternary compounds can be formed in which the third element segregates the immiscible atoms into spatially separated substructures. Quasi-low-dimensional structural units, such as sheets, chains, or clusters are a natural consequence of the immiscible atoms seeking to avoid close contact in the solid state. Further, as proof of principle, we present the discovery, crystal growth, and basic physical properties of La 4 ⁢Co 4 ⁢$\mathrm{X}$ (X = Pb, Bi, Sb), a family of intermetallic compounds based on the antagonistic pairs Co-Pb and Co-Bi. La 4 ⁢Co 4 ⁢$\mathrm{X}$ adopts an orthorhombic crystal structure (space group Pbam) containing quasi-two-dimensional Co slabs and La-X polyhedra that stack in an alternating manner along the α axis. Consistent with our proposal, the La atoms separate the Co and X substructures, ensuring there are no direct contacts between the members of the immiscible (antagonistic) pair. Within the Co slabs, the atoms occupy the vertices of corner sharing tetrahedra and triangles, and this bonding motif produces narrow electronic bands near the Fermi level that favor magnetism. The Co is moment bearing in each La 4 ⁢Co 4 $\mathrm{X}$ compound studied, and we show that whereas La 4 ⁢Co 4 ⁢Pb behaves as a three-dimensional antiferromagnet with T N =220K, La 4 ⁢Co 4 ⁢Bi and La 4⁢ Co 4 ⁢Sb have behavior consistent with low-dimensional magnetic coupling and ordering, with T N =153K and 143 K, respectively. In addition to the Pb-, Bi-, and Sb-based La 4 ⁢Co 4 ⁢$\mathrm{X}$ compounds, we also were likely able to produce an analogous La 4 ⁢Co 4 ⁢Sn in polycrystalline form, although we were unable to isolate single crystals. We anticipate that identifying and using mutually compatible third elements together with an antagonistic pair represents a generalizable design principle for discovering new materials and new structure types containing low-dimensional substructures.

Investigation of an octupole breathing mode of 208 Pb as a resolution to the elliptical-to-triangular azimuthal anisotropy puzzle in ultracentral relativistic heavy ion collisions

Relativistic heavy ion collisions provide a unique opportunity to probe the nuclear structure by taking an instantaneous snapshot of the colliding nuclei and converting it into momentum anisotropies of final emitted hadrons. A long-standing puzzle of too large a ratio of the elliptical-to-triangular (𝑣 2 -to-𝑣 3 ) anisotropies in ultracentral 208 Pb + 208 Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) cannot be solved simply by hydrodynamic simulations with initial conditions containing the spherical or certain deformed shape of 208 Pb. Here, in this Letter, using the iEBE-VISHNU relativistic viscous hydrodynamic hybrid model simulations with the TR⁢ENTo initial condition, we show that a dynamic octupole deformation—a shape-breathing mode of 208 Pb —could potentially solve the 𝑣2-to-𝑣3 puzzle and simultaneously describe the 𝑣 3 ⁡{4} data measured in experiment. Our results highlight the unique capability of capturing transient collective properties of nuclei on yoctosecond (10 −24 s) timescales, unfeasible with low-energy nuclear reactions.

Reversible phase transformations between Pb nanocrystals and a viscous liquid-like phase

Phase transformations have been a prominent topic of study for both fundamental and applied science. Solid-liquid reaction–induced phase transformations can be hard to characterize, and the transformation mechanisms are often not fully understood. Here, we report reversible phase transformations between a metal (Pb) nanocrystal and a viscous liquid-like phase unveiled by in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy. The reversible phase transformations are obtained by modulating the electron current density (between 1000 and 3000 electrons Å –2 s –1 ). The metal-organic viscous liquid-like phase exhibits short-range ordering with a preferred Pb-Pb distance of 0.5 nm. Assisted by density functional theory and molecular dynamics calculations, we show that the viscous liquid-like phase results from the reactions of Pb with the CH 3 O fragments from the triethylene glycol solution under electron beam irradiation. Such reversible phase transformations may find broad implementations.

Measurement of Λ(1520) production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$$_ {NN}$ = 5.02

The production of the Λ(1520) baryonic resonance has been measured at midrapidity in inelastic pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV and in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$$_ {NN}$=5.02 TeV for non-single diffractive events and in multiplicity classes. The resonance is reconstructed through its hadronic decay channel Λ(1520) →pK - and the charge conjugate with the ALICE detector. The integrated yields and mean transverse momenta are calculated from the measured transverse momentum distributions in pp and p–Pb collisions. The mean transverse momenta follow mass ordering as previously observed for other hyperons in the same collision systems. A Blast-Wave function constrained by other light hadrons (π, K, K$^0_S$, p, Λ) describes the shape of the Λ(1520) transverse momentum distribution up to 3.5 GeV/c in p–Pb collisions. In the framework of this model, this observation suggests that the Λ(1520) resonance participates in the same collective radial flow as other light hadrons. The ratio of the yield of Λ(1520) to the yield of the ground state particle Λ remains constant as a function of charged-particle multiplicity, suggesting that there is no net effect of the hadronic phase in p–Pb collisions on the Λ(1520) yield.

Measurement of the production cross section of prompt $\Xi ^0_{\textrm{c}}$ baryons in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{{\textrm{NN}}}}=5.02$ TeV

The transverse momentum (p T ) differential production cross section of the promptly produced charm-strange baryon $\Xi ^0_{\textrm{c}}$ (and its charge conjugate $\Xi ^0_{\textrm{c}}$) is measured at midrapidity via its hadronic decay into π + $\Xi$ – in p–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{{\textrm{NN}}}}=5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The $\Xi ^0_{\textrm{c}}$ nuclear modification factor (R pPb ), calculated from the cross sections in pp and p–Pb collisions, is presented and compared with the R pPb of Λ$^{+}_{c}$ baryons. The ratios between the p T -differential production cross section of $\Xi ^0_{\textrm{c}}$ baryons and those of D 0 mesons and Λ$^{+}_{c}$ baryons are also reported and compared with results at forward and backward rapidity from the LHCb Collaboration. The measurements of the production cross section of prompt $\Xi ^0_{\textrm{c}}$ baryons are compared with a model based on perturbative QCD calculations of charm-quark production cross sections, which includes only cold nuclear matter effects in p–Pb collisions, and underestimates the measurement by a factor of about 50. This discrepancy is reduced when the data is compared with a model that includes string formation beyond leading-colour approximation or in which hadronisation is implemented via quark coalescence. The p T -integrated cross section of prompt $\Xi ^0_{\textrm{c}}$-baryon production at midrapidity extrapolated down to p T = 0 is also reported. These measurements offer insights and constraints for theoretical calculations of the hadronisation process. Additionally, they provide inputs for the calculation of the charm production cross section in p–Pb collisions at midrapidity.

Buried interface modulation via $\mathrm{PEDOT:PSS}$ ionic exchange for the Sn-Pb mixed perovskite based solar cells

To apply Sn-Pb mixed perovskite solar cells for highly efficient single- or multi-junction devices, understanding device-specific buried interfaces is necessary. Poly [3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene]:poly[styrene sulfonate] (PEDOT:PSS) is primarily used as a hole transport layer in Sn-Pb mixed perovskite solar cells. However, the spatial heterogeneity of PEDOT:PSS, caused by its PEDOT-rich and PSS-rich domains, induces many defects at the buried interface in PEDOT:PSS/perovskite, which limits device performance. Here, we present ionic exchange (IE) of PEDOT:PSS via a combination of methylamine iodide (MAI) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Through surface analyses and density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we confirm that the IE process preferentially form PEDOT-I and MA-PSS and that PSS-rich domains bind to DMSO. Thus, the spatial separation of PEDOT:PSS is solved, and the exchanged MA + and I - ions serve as a bridge between PEDOT:PSS and the perovskite, leading to improved physical, chemical, and electrical properties of the buried interface. The Sn-Pb mixed perovskite solar cells using IE-PEDOT:PSS achieve an improved efficiency of 21.3% with an open-circuit voltage of 0.85 V and show better long-term stability. Additionally, IE-PEDOT:PSS works effectively in 2-terminal all-perovskite tandem devices, resulting in an improved efficiency of 23.5% and high reproducibility.

Exploring the Pb 1− x Sr x HfO 3 System and Potential for High Capacitive Energy Storage Density and Efficiency

Abstract The hafnate perovskites PbHfO 3 (antiferroelectric) and SrHfO 3 (“potential” ferroelectric) are studied as epitaxial thin films on SrTiO 3 (001) substrates with the added opportunity of observing a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in the Pb 1− x Sr x HfO 3 system. The resulting (240)‐oriented PbHfO 3 ( Pba 2) films exhibited antiferroelectric switching with a saturation polarization ≈53 µC cm −2 at 1.6 MV cm −1 , weak‐field dielectric constant ≈186 at 298 K, and an antiferroelectric‐to‐paraelectric phase transition at ≈518 K. (002)‐oriented SrHfO 3 films exhibited neither ferroelectric behavior nor evidence of a polar P 4 mm phase . Instead, the SrHfO 3 films exhibited a weak‐field dielectric constant ≈25 at 298 K and no signs of a structural transition to a polar phase as a function of temperature (77–623 K) and electric field (–3 to 3 MV cm −1 ). While the lack of ferroelectric order in SrHfO 3 removes the potential for MPB, structural and property evolution of the Pb 1− x Sr x HfO 3 (0 ≤ x < 1) system is explored. Strontium alloying increased the electric‐breakdown strength ( E B ) and decreased hysteresis loss, thus enhancing the capacitive energy storage density ( U r ) and efficiency (η). The composition, Pb 0.5 Sr 0.5 HfO 3 produced the best combination of E B = 5.12 ± 0.5 MV cm −1 , U r = 77 ± 5 J cm −3 , and η = 97 ± 2%, well out‐performing PbHfO 3 and other antiferroelectric oxides.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle b-jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

A measurement of the inclusive b-jet production cross section is presented in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, using data collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The jets were reconstructed in the central rapidity region |η| < 0.5 from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameter R = 0.4. Identification of b jets exploits the long lifetime of b hadrons, using the properties of secondary vertices and impact parameter distributions. The p T -differential inclusive production cross section of b jets, as well as the corresponding inclusive b-jet fraction, are reported for pp and p-Pb collisions in the jet transverse momentum range 10 ≤ p T,ch jet ≤ 100 GeV/c, together with the nuclear modification factor, $R^{b-jet}_{pPb}$. The analysis thus extends the lower p T limit of b-jet measurements at the LHC. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with unity, indicating that the production of b jets in p-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is not affected by cold nuclear matter effects within the current precision. The measurements are well reproduced by POWHEG NLO pQCD calculations with PYTHIA fragmentation.

Measurement of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of multiplicity in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The multiplicity dependence of electron production from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of transverse momentum was measured in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The measurement was performed in the centre-of-mass rapidity interval -1.07 < y cms < 0.14 and transverse momentum interval 2 < p T < 16 GeV/c. The multiplicity dependence of the production of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays was studied by comparing the p T spectra measured for different multiplicity classes with those measured in pp collisions (Q pPb ) and in peripheral p-Pb collisions (Q cp ). The Q pPb results obtained are consistent with unity within uncertainties in the measured p T interval and event classes. This indicates that heavy-flavour decay electron production is consistent with binary scaling and independent of the geometry of the collision system. Additionally, the results suggest that cold nuclear matter effects are negligible within uncertainties, in the production of heavy-flavour decay electrons at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

Measurements of inclusive charged-particle jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV and the corresponding nuclear modification factor $R^{ch jet}_{pPb}$ are presented, using data collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed in the central rapidity region |η jet | < 0.5 from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The p T -differential inclusive production cross section of charged-particle jets, as well as the corresponding cross section ratios, are reported for pp and p-Pb collisions in the transverse momentum range 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 140 GeV/c and 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 160 GeV/c, respectively, together with the nuclear modification factor $R^{ch jet}_{pPb}$ in the range 10 < $p^{ch}_{T,jet}$ < 140 GeV/c. The analysis extends the p T range of the previously-reported charged-particle jet measurements by the ALICE Collaboration. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with one and independent of the jet resolution parameter with the improved precision of this study, indicating that the possible influence of cold nuclear matter effects on the production cross section of charged-particle jets in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV is smaller than the current precision. The obtained results are in agreement with other minimum bias jet measurements available for RHIC and LHC energies, and are well reproduced by the NLO perturbative QCD Powheg calculations with parton shower provided by PYTHIA8 as well as by JETSCAPE simulations.
