Charge Symmetry Violation Quark Distributions Via Precise Measurement of p+/p- Rations in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

Charge symmetry in the nucleon parton distributions assumes the distribution of quarks in the proton is related to those in the neutron. Indirect experimental evidence constrains Charge Symmetry Violation (CSV) to be less than 9%. In Quantum Chromo-Dynamics (QCD), charge symmetry is broken by the mass difference between the up and down quarks. CSV in the valence region can be extracted from precision measurements of the cross section ratio of charged pion production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) from deuterium. Such measurements were proposed and carried out in experiment E12-09-002 at Jefferson Lab. The experiment was conducted in Hall C from fall 2018 to spring 2019 using the upgraded 10.6 GeV incident electron beam. In this SIDIS experiment, charged pions are detected in coincidence with scattered electrons covering the four-momentum transfer of the virtual photon Q2 from 4 to 5.5 GeV2, the Bjorken variable x for 0.35-0.65, and the fraction of energy transfer carried by the outgoing pion z from 0.4-0.7.

Resolved photons in S HERPA

We present the first complete simulation framework, in the SHERPA event generator, for resolved photon interactions at next-to leading order accuracy. It includes photon spectra obtained through the equivalent-photon approximation, parton distribution functions to parametrize the hadronic structure of quasi-real photons, the matching of the parton shower to next-to leading order QCD calculations for resolved photon cross sections, and the modelling of multiple-parton interactions. We validate our framework against a wide range of photo-production data from LEP and HERPA experiments, observing good overall agreement. We identify important future steps relevant for high-quality simulations at the planned Electron–Ion Collider.

Measurement of single-diffractive dijet production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV with the CMS and TOTEM experiments

Measurements are presented of the single-diffractive dijet cross section and the diffractive cross section as a function of the proton fractional momentum loss $\xi $ and the four-momentum transfer squared t. Both processes ${\text{ p }{}{}} {\text{ p }{}{}} \rightarrow {\text{ p }{}{}} {\text{ X }} $ and ${\text{ p }{}{}} {\text{ p }{}{}} \rightarrow {\text{ X }} {\text{ p }{}{}} $, i.e. with the proton scattering to either side of the interaction point, are measured, where ${\text{ X }} $ includes at least two jets; the results of the two processes are averaged. The analyses are based on data collected simultaneously with the CMS and TOTEM detectors at the LHC in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8\,\text {Te}\text {V} $ during a dedicated run with $\beta ^{*} = 90\,\text {m} $ at low instantaneous luminosity and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $37.5{\,\text {nb}^{-1}} $. The single-diffractive dijet cross section $\sigma ^{{\text{ p }{}{}} {\text{ X }}}_{\mathrm {jj}}$, in the kinematic region $\xi < 0.1$, $0.03< |t | < 1\,\text {Ge}\text {V} ^2$, with at least two jets with transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm {T}} > 40\,\text {Ge}\text {V} $, and pseudorapidity $|\eta | < 4.4$, is $21.7 \pm 0.9\,\text {(stat)} \,^{+3.0}_{-3.3}\,\text {(syst)} \pm 0.9\,\text {(lumi)} \,\text {nb} $. The ratio of the single-diffractive to inclusive dijet yields, normalised per unit of $\xi $, is presented as a function of x, the longitudinal momentum fraction of the proton carried by the struck parton. The ratio in the kinematic region defined above, for x values in the range $-2.9 \le \log _{10} x \le -1.6$, is $R = (\sigma ^{{\text{ p }{}{}} {\text{ X }}}_{\mathrm {jj}}/\Delta \xi )/\sigma _{\mathrm {jj}} = 0.025 \pm 0.001\,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.003\,\text {(syst)} $, where $\sigma ^{{\text{ p }{}{}} {\text{ X }}}_{\mathrm {jj}}$ and $\sigma _{\mathrm {jj}}$ are the single-diffractive and inclusive dijet cross sections, respectively. The results are compared with predictions from models of diffractive and nondiffractive interactions. Monte Carlo predictions based on the HERA diffractive parton distribution functions agree well with the data when corrected for the effect of soft rescattering between the spectator partons.

Spin density matrix elements in exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction

We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction at COMPASS using 160 GeV/c polarised μ + and μ – beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the kinematic range 5.0 GeV/c 2 < W < 17.0 GeV/c 2 , 1.0 (GeV/c) 2 < $\mathrm{Q}$ 2 < 10.0 (GeV/c) 2 and 0.01 (GeV/c) 2 < $p_{\textrm{T}}^2$ < 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 . Here, W denotes the mass of the final hadronic system, $\mathrm{Q}$ 2 the virtuality of the exchanged photon, and $p_{\textrm{T}}$ the transverse momentum of the $\rho ^0$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($\gamma ^*_T \rightarrow V^{ }_L$) indicate a violation of s-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a dominant contribution of natural-parity-exchange transitions and a very small contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange transitions, which is compatible with zero within experimental uncertainties. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow one to evaluate in a model-dependent way the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive $\rho ^0$ production.

Exploring the gravitational structure of the proton with the dilepton final state using the CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab

The Gravitational Form Factors (GFFs) give access to the internal distributions of mass, pressure and shear force inside the proton. They were considered experimentally unmeasurable for decades due to the very weak gravitational interaction [1]. However, the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs), which describe the correlations between the longitudinal momentum and the transverse position of the partons inside the nucleon, have lately been related to the GFFs. For the first time, this relation gives the opportunity to extract GFFs experimentally. In this talk, I will present two ways to access GFFs using data taken in 2018 by the CLAS12 detector with a 10.6 GeV electron beam impinging on a liquid-hydrogen target. First, I will present the first measurement of the Timelike Compton Scattering reaction (the hard photoproduction of a lepton pair), that gives access to the quark GFFs via the angular asymmetry of the electron/positron pair [2]. I will then present the current effort to extract the near-threshold J/? photoproduction cross section using the same dataset. This later measurement is expected to provide direct insight on the gluons GFFs of the proton. [1] H. PAGELS. Energy-Momentum Structure Form Factors of Particles. Spatial imaging of proton via leading-twist nonskewed GPDs with basis light-front quantization

The internal image of the proton is unveiled by examining the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness, within the basis light-front quantized environment. Several distributions emerge when a quark is sampled with different currents depending upon the helicity arrangements of the active quark and the proton target. We investigate six of the eight leading-twist proton GPDs of the valence quarks, the helicity conserving distributions ( H , E , H ˜ ) and the helicity nonconserving ( H T , E T , H ˜ T ) distributions at skewness set to zero ( ζ = 0 ). We consider purely transverse momentum transfer and, hence, obtain results describe only the proton’s two-dimensional structure in the transverse plane. We present the Mellin moments of these distribution functions, where the first moment produces a form factor and the second Mellin moments help extract the information on partonic contributions to the hadronic angular momentum. We compare our results for the Mellin moments with those from lattice QCD and other approaches where available. We also present the GPDs in transverse position space. Connected and Disconnected Sea Partons from CT18 Parametrization of PDFs

The separation of the connected and disconnected sea partons, which were uncovered in the Euclidean path-integral formulation of the hadronic tensor, is accommodated with the CT18 parametrization of the global analysis of the parton distribution functions (PDFs). This is achieved with the help of the distinct small x x behaviors of these two sea parton components and the constraint from the lattice calculation of the ratio of the strange momentum fraction to that of the {\bar u} u ‾ or {\bar d} d ‾ in the disconnected insertion. This allows lattice calculations of separate flavors in both the connected and disconnected insertions to be directly compared with the global analysis results term by term.

A novel formulation of the unintegrated gluon distribution for DIS

We provide a semi-classical description of the inclusive gluon mediated Deep Inelastic Scattering cross section in a way that accounts for the leading powers in both the Regge and Bjorken limits. Our approach thus allows a systematic matching of small and moderate xBj regimes of gluon proton structure functions. We find a new unintegrated gluon distribution with an explicit dependence on the longitudinal momentum fraction x which entirely spans both the dipole operator and the gluonic Parton Distribution Function. Computing this gauge invariant gluon operator on the lattice could allow to probe the energy dependence of the saturation scale from first principles.

Extraction of the worm-gear TMD g1t from COMPASS , HERMES and JLab data on semi-inclusive DIS

Transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) are an important class of functions required to understand the 3D structure of hadrons in terms of their underlying partons. One of the least known TMDs in terms of a global QCD analysis is the worm-gear TMD g1t . It carries the probabilistic interpretation of finding longitudinally polarized quarks inside transversely polarized hadrons. In this proceedings, we present the first-ever global QCD analysis of the semi-inclusive DIS $A^ {cos(φ_h-φ_S)}_{LT}$ data using Monte Carlo techniques to extract the worm-gear TMD g1T . The relevant data are available from COMPASS, HERMES and JLab. We compare our results for g1T with different theoretical approaches, including the large-N c approximation, the Wandzura Wilczek-type approximation, and lattice QCD.

Measurement of differential t-channel single top (anti)quark production cross-sections at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The production of single top quarks and top antiquarks via the t-channel exchange of a virtual W boson is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The full Run 2 data sample recorded with the ATLAS detector in the years 2015–2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The absolute and normalised production cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of the transverse momentum and absolute rapidity of the top quark and top antiquark. In addition, the ratio of top quark to top antiquark production cross-sections is measured. The measured distributions are compared with next-to-leading-order quantum chromodynamics predictions obtained with different combinations of matrix-element generators, parton-shower programs and proton parton distribution functions, as well as to next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations. Overall, good agreement is observed between the measurements and the theoretical predictions. For most measured distributions, the sensitivity to differences between the predictions is limited by the systematic uncertainties in the measurement. The measured differential distributions are also interpreted in an effective field theory approach to constrain the Wilson-Coefficient CQq3,1$$ {C}_{Qq}^{3,1} $$ associated with a four-quark operator. The interpretation accounts for the effect of the selection efficiency, which is altered significantly by non-zero contributions from CQq3,1$$ {C}_{Qq}^{3,1} $$.

Modified coherence and the transverse extent of jets

We present a study of the transverse size of parton showers and their diminishing interaction with the medium in the high virtuality stage of jet evolution. We consider the process of a hard quark produced in deep inelastic scattering off a large nucleus. Single gluon radiation from this quark, in the absence of scattering, is rederived using wave packets. This allows for a derivation of the quantum uncertainty size of the hard quark, at the point of splitting. This uncertainty size is then incorporated within a Monte Carlo shower routine yielding transverse shower sizes noticeably larger than the classical antenna size of the shower. No clear relation is found between the full uncertainty size of the shower and the virtuality of the originating parton. The single gluon emission from the hard quark is then reanalyzed for the case of single rescattering off the remainder of the nucleus. A relation is derived between the jet transport coefficient $\hat{𝑞}$ and the gluon Transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution function (gTMDPDF). Solving this relation, for a simple case, clearly demonstrates the weakening of $\hat{𝑞}$ with the virtuality of the hard splitting parton.

Energy and scale dependence of $\hat{q}$ and the “JET puzzle”

Here, we present an attempt to probe the underlying structure of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at high resolution, based on the extracted jet transport coefficient $\hat{q}$. We argue that the exchanged momentum $\textit{k}$ between the hard parton and the medium varies over a range of scales, and for $\textit{k}$ ≥ 1 GeV, $\hat{q}$ can be expressed in terms of a parton distribution function (PDF). Because the mass of a QGP constituent is unknown, we define a scaling variable $x_N$ to represent the ratio of the parton momentum to the momentum of a self-contained section of the plasma which has a mass of 1 GeV. This scaling variable is used to parametrize the QGP-PDF. Calculations based on this reconstructed $\hat{q}$ are compared to data sensitive to the hardcore of jets, i.e., the single hadron suppression in terms of the nuclear modification factor $R_{ A A}$ and the azimuthal anisotropy parameter $v_2$ as a function of transverse momentum $p_T$, centrality, and energy of the collision. It is demonstrated that the scale evolution of the QGP-PDF is responsible for the reduction in the normalization of $\hat{q}$ between fits to the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider data; a puzzle, first discovered by the JET Collaboration.

Update On Meson Structure Studies at Jefferson Lab Hall C

The development of the GPD formalism in the last 25 years has been a groundbreaking advance in our understanding of the structure of the nucleon. Unifying the concepts of parton distributions and of hadronic form factors, GPDs contain a wealth of new information about how quarks and gluons make up hadrons. For example, GPDs correlate different parton configurations within the hadron at the quantum mechanical level. A recent theorem allows the reaction amplitude to be factorized into a hard part, representing the interaction of the incident virtual photon probe with the parton, and a soft part, containing the GPD and, representing the response of the nucleon to this interaction. Importantly this factorization relies on several assumptions that may not be true at low four momentum transfer squared (Q^2) for meson production. The main assumption is that the cross section will depend on Q^-6. This presentation will give the projected results of the recently completed Pion-LT experiment fro

Investigating the Transverse Structure of Hadrons Using Parton Pseudodistributions

Within the pseudo-PDF framework, we investigate the perturbative contributions to correlators that are used to study transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) on the lattice. Our results contain the full perturbative corrections which arise as artifacts from performing the calculation for a Euclidean separation between the parton fields, as well as the corrections which yield the evolution equations for the TMDs. This gives a path to extraction of the genuine non-perturbative features of the three-dimensional structure of the hadrons from lattice calculations.

$t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ at the LHC: on the size of corrections and b -jet definitions

We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of a $t\bar t$ pair in association with two heavy-flavour jets. We concentrate on the di-lepton $t\bar t$ decay channel at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The computation is based on pp → $e^+ν_eμ^-\bar{ν}_μb\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ matrix elements and includes all resonant and non-resonant diagrams, interferences and off-shell effects of the top quark and the W gauge boson. As it is customary for such studies, results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections. We extensively investigate the dependence of our results upon variation of renormalisation and factorisation scales and parton distribution functions in the quest for an accurate estimate of the theoretical uncertainties. We additionally study the impact of the contributions induced by the bottom-quark parton density. Results presented here are particularly relevant for measurements of $t\bar{t}H(H → b\bar{b})$ and the determination of the Higgs coupling to the top quark. In addition, they might be used for precise measurements of the top-quark fiducial cross sections and to investigate top-quark decay modelling at the LHC.

First study of polarized proton-proton scattering with small-𝑥 helicity evolution

We perform a phenomenological study of helicity-dependent parton distribution functions (PDFs) using small-𝑥 helicity evolution equations, incorporating for the first time single-inclusive jet production data in polarized proton-proton (𝑝⁢𝑝) scattering at parton momentum fractions 𝑥 <0.1. We also simultaneously include double-longitudinal spin asymmetries in inclusive and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering probing 𝑥 <0.1. Employing the polarized small-𝑥 pure-glue calculation of 𝑝⁢𝑝 → 𝑔⁡𝑋 for the jet production cross section, we modify the large-𝑁 𝑐 &𝑁 𝑓 KPS-CTT evolution equations by setting 𝑁 𝑓 = 0 to replicate the large-𝑁𝑐 (pure-glue) limit, while retaining external quark flavors for the spinor field operators. We find that the 𝑝⁢𝑝 data have a considerable impact on the helicity PDFs at small 𝑥, reducing their uncertainties and leading to a total quark and gluon helicity in the proton for 𝑥 < 0.1 of −0.04 ±0.23. Combining our analysis with a recent JAM helicity PDF analysis of the world polarized data, which includes 𝑥 > 0.1, we find a total quark and gluon helicity contribution for 𝑥 >10 −7 of between 0.02 and 0.51.

Physical implications of the extrapolation and statistical bootstrap of nucleon structure function ratios F 2 n F 2 p for mirror nuclei He 3 and H 3

A nuclear physics example of statistical bootstrap is used on the MARATHON nucleon structure function ratio data in the quark momentum fraction regions x B → 0 and x B → 1. The extrapolated F 2 ratio as quark momentum fraction x B → 1 is $\frac{F^n_2}{F^p_2}$ → 0.4 ± 0.05 and this value is compared to theoretical predictions. The extrapolated ratio when x B → 0 favors the simple model of isospin symmetry with the complete dominance of sea quarks at low momentum fraction. At high- x B , the proton quark distribution function ratio d/u is derived from the F 2 ratio and found to be d/u → 1/6. Our extrapolated values for both the $\frac{F^n_2}{F^p_2}$ ratio and the d/u parton distribution function ratio are within uncertainties of perturbative QCD values from quark counting, helicity conservation arguments, and a Dyson-Schwinger equation with a contact interaction model. In addition, it is possible to match the statistical bootstrap value to theoretical predictions by allowing two compatible models to act simultaneously in the nucleon wave function. Finally, one such example is nucleon wave functions composed of a linear combination of a quark-diquark state and a three-valence quark correlated state with coefficients that combine to give the extrapolated F 2 ratio at x B = 1.
