Preparation and Oxidation Performance of a NiCoCrAlYSiHf + NiAl Composite Coating Deposited by Arc Ion Plating and Magnetron Sputtering Techniques

A NiCoCrAlYSiHf+NiAl composite coating was deposited onto a second-generation single-crystal superalloy René N5 by methods of arc ion plating and magnetron sputtering. After vacuum annealing, the composite coating exhibited a gradient distribution of elements, in which Al was enriched in outer layer and Cr was enriched in inner layer. Compared with conventional NiCoCrAlYSiHf and β-NiAl coatings, the composite coating was evaluated in isothermal and cyclic oxidation tests at 1100 °C in ambient air. The results showed that the oxidation rate of the composite coating was lower than that of NiCoCrAlYSiHf coating. Meanwhile, the extent of interdiffusion between coating and substrate in the composite coating was slighter compared with that in the β-NiAl coating. Microstructure evolutions of the composite coating after annealing and further oxidation test are investigated.

Numerical Simulation of Residual Stresses in Multipass Gas Metal Arc-Welded Joints of Thick Aluminum Alloy Plates

Numerical simulation was utilized to investigate the residual stresses in the multipass gas metal arc-welded joints of high-strength Al-Zn-Mg alloy plates. In order to elevate the reliability of numerical simulation, the heat source model, parameters characterizing the thermal and mechanical properties, boundary conditions, material constitutive model and finite element meshing were discussed in detail. As a novelty of this paper, the modified Arrhenius constitutive equation of the base material and the filled material was obtained according to the results of high-temperature tensile tests. Distributions of stress on the upper and bottom surface of the joint were obtained based on numerical simulation. Special attention was paid to the evolutions of local residual stress on the bottom surface of the joint, and it’s found that residual stresses on the bottom surface of the joint were almost unchanged after the weld seam approached a certain thickness. Blind-hole method and x-ray method were adopted to detect the residual stresses on the surfaces to verify the accuracy of the results obtained by numerical simulation.

Impact Damage Investigation on Glass Fiber-Reinforced Plate Laminates at Room and Lower Temperatures through Ultrasound Testing and Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry

In this work, the evaluation of damage area due to low-velocity impact tests at different impact energy values and different temperatures on glass fiber-reinforced plate laminates was investigated by two nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) and ultrasound testing (UT). Composites are characterized by several interacting failure modes such as matrix breakage, fiber failure and delaminations, which can be simultaneously induced by low-velocity impacts and can be different depending on the temperature. It can be complicated to detect by visual inspections of the structures for such phenomena. This paper aims to investigate the dependence of the damaged area with respect to temperature variation on glass fiber composite laminates. GF composite laminates were impacted with three energy levels (5, 10, 20 J) and at different temperatures (room temperature, − 25, − 50 °C) by a drop weight impact machine. The results show that at decreasing temperature, a decrease in the damage extension was observed, which is more evident at increasing impact energy. Moreover, as expected, the results confirm UT and ESPI techniques are able to identify the barely visible low-velocity impact damage. However, some limitations for detection were found in ESPI. Nonetheless, the ESPI technique can be considered as one of the useful NDE methods if the calibration and the post-processing methods are improved.

Impact of Backing Plate and Thermal Boundary Conditions for High-Speed Friction Stir Welding of 25-mm Thick Aluminum Alloy 7175-T79

Here this study demonstrates high-speed (150 mm/min) single pass friction stir butt joining of 25 mm thick aluminum alloy 7175-T79. To understand the impact of quenching and cooling rate on process responses, joint strength, and grain size distributions across the weld thickness, we performed a series of friction stir welding (FSW) trials in air and with a trailing water spray using steel and composite backing plates (BP). Welds made in air and trailing water spray exhibit significantly different hardness distributions across the nugget, heat affected zone (HAZ), and HAZ minimum hardness as evidenced by detailed microhardness mapping. The effect of trailing water spray (TWS) on joint efficiency overshadows the influence of BP composition due to the vastly different contribution to quenching. TWS also resulted in a multifaceted effect on FSW such as lowering processing temperature, increasing X and Z forces while lowering Y force, and narrow heat affecting zone. Finally, digital image correlation (DIC)-based fracture mode analysis and grain size measurements correlate with the hardness distribution.

Laser ablation for structuring Li-ion electrodes for fast charging and its impact on material properties, rate capability, Li plating, and wetting

Laser ablation is a scalable technique for decreasing the effective tortuosity of electrodes by selectively removing material with high precision. Applied to ≈ 110 um thick electrode coatings, this work focuses on understanding the impact of laser ablation on electrode material properties at the beginning of life and synergistic impacts of ablated channels on cell performance throughout their cycle life. Post laser ablation, local changes in chemistry, crystallography, and morphology of the laser-impacted electrode regions are investigated. It is shown that femtosecond pulsed laser ablation can achieve high-rate material removal with minor material damage locally at the interface of the impacted zones. The capacity achieved during a 6C (10 min) constant-current constant-voltage charge to 4.2 V improved from 1 mAh cm -2 for the non-ablated electrodes to almost 2 mAh cm -2 for the ablated electrodes. This benefit is attributed to a synergistic effect of enhanced wetting and decreased electrode tortuosity. The benefit was maintained for over 120 cycles, and upon disassembly decreased Li-plating on the graphite anode was observed. Finally, multi-physics modeling in conjunction with wetting analyses showed that laser ablating either one of the electrodes led to substantial improvements in wetting and rate capability, indicating that substantial performance benefits can be achieved by ablating only the graphite anode as apposed to both electrodes.

Rate-induced aging effects on Parallel-Plate Avalanche Counter (PPAC) caused by heavy ion beams

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is one of the premier scientific user facilities for nuclear science with radioactive beams, capable of producing most (approximately 80%) of the isotopes expected to exist, from oxygen to uranium, at energies up to 200 MeV/u. With the increase in beam power from the present 10 kW to the planned 400 kW, FRIB experiments are about to enter a new era. An unprecedented rate capability as well as stable performance of all the planned instrumentation intended for beam diagnostics and beam tuning is required at the expected high beam intensities (> 1 MHz). A summary of aging phenomena at high heavy-ion beam rates observed in the Advanced Rare Isotope Separator (ARIS) detectors for beam diagnostics, including Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters (PPAC) and plastic scintillation for time-of-flight measurements, is discussed. Current research and development project to mitigate rate-induced aging are presented.

Electrical Conductivity and Sound Velocities of Talc Under High Pressure and High Temperature Conditions and Application to the Subducting Cocos Plate

Talc is expected to be an important water carrier in Earth's upper mantle, and understanding its electrical and seismic properties under high pressure and temperature conditions is required to detect possible talc-rich regions in subduction zones imaged using geophysical observations. Here, we conducted acoustic and electrical experiments on natural talc aggregates at relevant pressure-temperature conditions. Compressional wave velocity (V p ) was measured using ultrasonic interferometry in a Paris-Edinburgh press at pressures up to 3.4 GPa and temperatures up to 873 K. Similar Vp values are obtained regardless of the initial crystallographic preferred orientation of the samples, which can be explained by talc grain reorientation during the experiment, with the (001) plane becoming perpendicular to the uniaxial compression axis. Electrical conductivity of the same starting material was determined using impedance spectroscopy in a multi-anvil press up to 6 GPa and 1263 K. Two conductivity jumps are observed, at ∼860–1025 K and ∼940–1080 K, depending on pressure, and interpreted as talc dehydroxylation and decomposition, respectively. Electrical anisotropy is observed at low temperature and decreases with increasing pressure (∼10 at 1.5 GPa and ∼2 at 3.5 GPa). Comparison of acoustic and electrical results with geophysical observations in central Mexico supports the presence of a talc-bearing layer atop the subducted Cocos plate.

High-resolution x-ray radiography with Fresnel zone plates on the University of Rochester’s OMEGA Laser Systems

Experiments performed at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics with a continuous-wave (cw) x-ray source and on the OMEGA and OMEGA EP Laser Systems have utilized a Fresnel zone plate (FZP) to obtain x-ray images with a spatial resolution as small as ~1.5 μm. Such FZP images were obtained with a charge-coupled device or a framing camera at energies ranging from 4.5 keV to 6.7 keV using x-ray line emission from both the cw source and high-intensity, laser-beam–illuminated metal foils. In all cases, the resolution test results are determined from patterns and grids backlit by these sources. Here, the resolutions obtained are shown to be due to a combination of the spectral content of the x-ray sources and detector resolution limited by the magnification of the images (14× to 22×). High-speed framing cameras were used to obtain FZP images with frame times as short as ~30 ps. Double-shell implosions on OMEGA were backlit by laser-irradiated Fe foils, thus obtaining a framing-camera–limited, FZP-image resolution of ~3 μm–4 μm.

A simple approach for characterizing the spatially varying sensitivity of microchannel plate detectors

Herein we present a simple approach to characterize the spatial variation of the gain in microchannel plate (MCP) coupled to phosphor detectors using single electron or photon hits. The technique is easy to implement and general enough to be extended to other kinds of detectors. We demonstrate the efficacy of the approach on both laboratory and Monte Carlo generated datasets. Furthermore, we use the approach to measure the variation in gain over time as the MCP is exposed to an increasing number of electrons.

Octave-spanning terahertz quarter-wave plates based on over-coupled Fabry–Pérot resonances in reflective metal–dielectric–metal metasurfaces

Compact devices for broadband polarization control in the terahertz (THz) regime remain challenging to realize due to the intrinsic phase dispersion associated with birefringent materials and resonant structures. Here, we demonstrate achromatic THz quarter-wave plates with near-unity efficiency and operating under a wide range of incidence angles, based on over-coupled metal–dielectric–metal reflective metasurfaces. The devices operate as single-port anisotropic Fabry–Pérot cavities, in which the phase dispersion of the over-coupled resonances is engineered to maintain an approximately constant relative phase delay between orthogonal field components over a broad frequency range. Four complementary metasurface designs operating at an incidence angle of 45° collectively cover the 0.25–3 THz frequency range accessible to a typical THz time-domain spectroscopy system. Each device exhibits an approximately octave-wide operational bandwidth, with axial ratios below 3 dB and polarization-conversion efficiencies exceeding 80% across most of the operating band. Systematic structural optimization suppresses coupling to diffraction and guided-wave modes, thereby further extending the usable bandwidth while preserving the required phase relationship between orthogonal polarizations. The demonstrated metasurfaces are compatible with wafer-scale fabrication processes, and experimental results show excellent agreement with simulations. These findings establish over-coupled reflective metasurfaces as a robust, scalable, and versatile platform for broadband THz polarization control.

Production of microchannel plates using nano-scale additive manufacturing

Microchannel plate (MCP) detectors have been the workhorse detector for many applications, including space borne ultra-violet imaging and spectrographic instruments. Recent advances in additive manufacturing (AM) have enabled fabrication of complex structures with nano-scale resolution facilitating the production of highly customizable MCPs. Using AM to produce MCPs potentially has many advantages over traditional fused glass substrates, including better material control (e.g., more robust glasses or ceramics), better control of microscopic features (e.g., unique pore geometries to improve performance), and better control of macroscopic features (e.g., printing precision curved surfaces for focal plane matching). Through a collaboration with industry, national laboratory, and university partners, small format microcapillary array substrates were produced using a standard polymer photoresin. In conclusion, these substrates were functionalized using atomic layer deposition and their performance was compared to current state-of-the-art Pb-glass and borosilicate-glass MCPs.

Oxide Removal from the InSb Plate Surface to Produce Lateral Spin Valves

Abstracts: The formation conditions of a smooth and oxide-free surface of InSb semiconductor with the purpose of fabricating lateral spin devices based on it are investigated. The dry etching rate by Ar ions of the surface of the crystalline faces (100) of InSb plates as well as a variation in their roughness depending on the power supplied to ion etching devices are investigated. The degree of oxidation of the semiconductor surface exposed to air after ion cleaning and annealing in molecular hydrogen are evaluated. Based on comparison of the efficiency of spin injection in devices formed with semiconductors subjected to various types of treatment, a conclusion is made about the parameters of optimal preparation of the surface of the InSb wafers for the fabrication of lateral spin devices.

The Influence of Mechanical Stresses in a D16 Aluminum-Alloy Plate on the Generation of Acoustic Waves under Laser Irradiation

Laser generation of ultrasound in metals with internal mechanical stresses has been analyzed. The characteristics of a photoacoustic signal in the vicinity of a hole in a D16 alloy plate under the action of mechanical stresses have been studied. The discrepancy between the experimental results and predictions of the thermodynamic model for the dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient on mechanical stresses was found. For proper description of the signal characteristics in real metals, we have proposed to take into account the influence of the electron subsystem on laser generation of acoustic waves.

Effect of dimethyl phthalate contamination on all-silica GLAD quarter-wave plate performances

Phthalate molecular contamination, identified in the Laser Mégajoule target chamber, can severely alter porous coatings' performance, such as glancing angle deposited quarter-wave plates (QWP). QWPs could potentially be used inside this chamber to smooth the intensity of the focal spots on the target. In this study, all-silica QWP coatings were contaminated with dimethyl phthalate. Transmission was lowered due to the absorption of phthalates, and a non-uniform retardance was induced, even after a two-month storage period in air following contamination. Infrared measurements confirmed the presence of bonds associated with phthalates within the coatings due to their sorption and only partial desorption.

Preparation of Mechanically Robust, Macroscopic Low-Density Gold Foams by Highly Efficient Electroless Gold Plating

Mechanically robust, macroscopic-sized low-density gold foams with unique morphology of hollow gold shells were prepared by the synthesis of gold-coated polystyrene coreshell particles followed by thermal removal of the polymer core. Here, we reported a simple, highly efficient electroless gold plating procedure to form ultrathin, conformal gold coatings on the surface of polystyrene particles. A modified, scalable casting approach to form uniform, large monoliths (up to 1 cm diameter) and a baking condition to minimize undesirable densification of final foams were also developed. To demonstrate the mechanical stability and integrity of the Au foams, a representative monolithic sample (~0.9 g/ cm3 ) was successfully cut and shaped into a gold foam “washer” by a series of precision machining and processing. A depth-sensing indentation test (nanoindentation) as well as characterizations on other useful properties such as surface areas and electrical conductivity of the Au foams were carried out to understand the mechanical behavior and potential applicability.

Dimensionless parameters to categorize the failure modes of ductile plate perforation

In this work, two dimensionless parameters were derived organically from impact mechanics equations to remove the need for empirical constants. These two dimensionless parameters effectively collapse the ballistic performance of ductile metal plates along two distinct loci, depending on the projectile geometry and the corresponding failure mode. Projectiles that initiate ductile hole enlargement via cavity expansion fall along a linear curve, while shear-plugging failure modes tend to fall along a cubic curve. Results were demonstrated for various projectiles of different calibers impacting aluminum and Ti-6Al-4V alloys, and further explored for more complex target combinations. The main advantage of the approach in this work is to drastically reduce the number of features for input into machine learning algorithms.

Enhanced Electrolyte Transport and Kinetics Mitigate Graphite Exfoliation and Li Plating in Fast–Charging Li–Ion Batteries

Despite significant progress in energy retention, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) face untenable reductions in cycle life under extreme fast-charging (XFC) conditions, which primarily originate from a variety of kinetic limitations between the graphite anode and the electrolyte. Through quantitative Li + loss accounting and comprehensive materials analyses, it is directly observed that the operation of LIB pouch cells at 4 C||C/3 (charging||discharging) results in Li plating, disadvantageous solid-electrolyte-interphase formation, and solvent co-intercalation leading to interstitial decomposition within graphite layers. It is found that these failure modes originate from the insufficient properties of conventional electrolytes, where employing a designed ester-based electrolyte improved the capacity retention of these cells from 55.9% to 88.2% after 500 cycles when operated at the aforementioned conditions. These metrics are the result of effective mitigation of the aforementioned failure modes due to superior Li + transport and desolvation characteristics demonstrated through both experimental and computational characterization. Finally, this work reveals the vital nature of electrolyte design to XFC performance.
