Grain‐Boundary‐Rich Noble Metal Nanoparticle Assemblies: Synthesis, Characterization, and Reactivity

Abstract Here, a comprehensive study on the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of grain‐boundary (GB)‐rich noble metal nanoparticle (NP) assemblies is presented. A facile and scalable synthesis of Pt, Pd, Au, Ag, and Rh NP assemblies is developed, in which NPs are predominantly connected via Σ3 (111) twin GBs, forming a network. Driven by water electrolysis, the random collisions and oriented attachment of colloidal NPs in solution lead to the formation of Σ3 (111) twin boundaries and some highly mismatched GBs. This synthetic method also provides convenient control over the GB density without altering the crystallite size or GB type by varying the NP collision frequency. The structural characterization reveals the presence of localized tensile strain at the GB sites. The ultrahigh activity of GB‐rich Pt NP assembly toward catalytic hydrogen oxidation in air is demonstrated, enabling room‐temperature catalytic hydrogen sensing for the first time. Finally, density functional theory calculations reveal that the strained Σ3(111) twin boundary facilitates oxygen dissociation, drastically enhancing the hydrogen oxidation rate via the dissociative pathway. This reported large‐scale synthesis of the Σ3 (111) twin GB‐rich structures enables the development of a broad range of high‐performance GB‐rich catalysts.

Atomic Structure Evolution of Pt–Co Binary Catalysts: Single Metal Sites versus Intermetallic Nanocrystals

Due to their exceptional catalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and other crucial electrochemical reactions, PtCo intermetallic nanoparticle (NP) and single atomic (SA) Pt metal site catalysts have received considerable attention. However, their formation mechanisms at the atomic level during high-temperature annealing processes remain elusive. Furthermore, the thermally driven structure evolution of Pt–Co binary catalyst systems is investigated using advanced in situ electron microscopy, including PtCo intermetallic alloys and single Pt/Co metal sites. The pre-doping of CoN 4 sites in carbon supports and the initial Pt NP sizes play essential roles in forming either Pt 3 Co intermetallics or single Pt/Co metal sites. Importantly, the initial Pt NP loadings against the carbon support are critical to whether alloying to L1 2 -ordered Pt 3 Co NPs or atomizing to SA Pt sites at high temperatures. High Pt NP loadings (e.g., 20%) tend to lead to the formation of highly ordered Pt 3 Co intermetallic NPs with excellent activity and enhanced stability toward the ORR. In contrast, at a relatively low Pt loading (<6 wt%), the formation of single Pt sites in the form of PtC 3 N is thermodynamically favorable, in which a synergy between the PtC 3 N and the CoN 4 sites could enhance the catalytic activity for the ORR, but showing insufficient stability.

Dual‐Scale Nanostructures via Evaporative Assembly

Abstract Dual‐scale hierarchical structures with regular microscale patterns and varying degree of nanoscale crystalline order are synthesized on physically and chemically homogeneous substrates by evaporative self‐assembly with a suspension of DNA‐functionalized nanoparticles (NPs) with a charged core shell. For a certain NP concentration range, periodic concentric rings in a stripe‐like micropattern are produced over macroscale surface areas by an NP monolayer with hexagonal lattice structure at the nanoscale. The stripe width, spacing, and nanoparticle ordering can be controlled by varying the NP concentration. The results indicate that the interplay between “stick‐slip” motion of the droplet contact line and coulombic and steric NP interactions control the formation of the observed structures. A simple analytical model is proposed to account for the experimental observations and guide the future design of different nanostructure morphologies. This work demonstrates a simple cost‐effective mask‐free method for fabricating large‐area nanostructured 2D materials and metasurfaces for applications ranging from energy conversion/storage to optoelectronics and nanophotonics.

Divergent Stabilities of Tetravalent Cerium, Uranium, and Neptunium Imidophosphorane Complexes**

Abstract The study of the redox chemistry of mid‐actinides (U−Pu) has historically relied on cerium as a model, due to the accessibility of trivalent and tetravalent oxidation states for these ions. Recently, dramatic shifts of lanthanide 4+/3+ non‐aqueous redox couples have been established within a homoleptic imidophosphorane ligand framework. Herein we extend the chemistry of the imidophosphorane ligand (NPC=[N=P t Bu(pyrr) 2 ] − ; pyrr=pyrrolidinyl) to tetrahomoleptic NPC complexes of neptunium and cerium ( 1‐M , 2‐M , M=Np, Ce) and present comparative structural, electrochemical, and theoretical studies of these complexes. Large cathodic shifts in the M 4+/3+ (M=Ce, U, Np) couples underpin the stabilization of higher metal oxidation states owing to the strongly donating nature of the NPC ligands, providing access to the U 5+/4+ , U 6+/5+ , and to an unprecedented, well‐behaved Np 5+/4+ redox couple. The differences in the chemical redox properties of the U vs . Ce and Np complexes are rationalized based on their redox potentials, degree of structural rearrangement upon reduction/oxidation, relative molecular orbital energies, and orbital composition analyses employing density functional theory.
