Multiple-satellite studies of magnetospheric substorms - Radial dynamics of the plasma sheet

The radial dynamics of the nighttime plasma sheet during substorms is examined. The spatial dependence of plasma sheet variations at different radial distances is studied on the basis of simultaneous recordings from two closely spaced satellites. The simultaneous measurements of the plasma sheet behavior earthward and tailward of r = 15 earth radii confirm substorm models which predict a thinning of the near-earth plasma sheet before the formation of an X-type neutral line, followed by a thickening on the earthward side and a further thinning on the tailward side. Temporal correlations between the plasma sheet variations and substorm development on the ground are studied by obtaining accurate timing of individual substorm expansion onsets. In particular, during multiple onset storms, the near-earth plasma sheet is found to experience a series of multiple expansions and contractions, which usually occur in a one-to-one relationship with ground Pi 2 bursts and are well correlated with auroral zone and low-altitude magnetic disturbances.

Acoustic performance of inlet multiple-pure-tone suppressors installed on NASA Quiet Engine 'C'

The purpose of the experimental program reported herein was to define the length of multiple pure tone (MPT) treatment required to reasonably suppress the MPT's produced by a supersonic tip speed fan and also determine what other suppression, broadband, and blade passing frequency (BPF), might be accomplished. The experimental results are presented in terms of both far-field and duct acoustic data. Front quadrant sound power level reduction in the far field is shown to agree with duct measurements over the range of treatment lengths. Detailed one-third octave and narrow band spectra at the maximum forward noise angle are presented. Some detailed analyses of one-third-octave band amplitudes are shown as a function of far-field angle. An approximate spinning mode duct propagation analysis is then introduced which predicts the acoustic suppression by the treatment on the multiple pure tones.

Double resonance spectroscopy of multiple-photon excited molecules

Multiple infrared photon absorption is a quite general process which molecules can undergo when placed in a high flux of infrared energy, such as the focussed beam of a CO2 laser. In order to understand how this process works, one must be able to follow the evolution of the molecules through their internal states, populated by photon absorption. Double-resonance spectroscopy is the method of a choice for getting at this information. A system pumped by CO2 laser radiation can be examined with a tunable laser probe beam, such as that from a lead-salt diode laser. From such an experiment, one can directly observe Rabi modulation of the absorption lines, determine elementary state-to-state relaxation pathways, and locate higher excited vibrational states. Systems currently under investigation include SF6 and vinyl chloride. In suitable cases, the probe beam can be a tunable visible or UV source, such as a dye laser. Fluorescence spectroscopy can then be used to monitor the transient absorptions produced by multiple-photon excitation. Among the systems which can be examined are biacetyl and glyoxal.

Relative motions of fragments of the split comets. III - A test of splitting and comets with suspected multiple nuclei

A quantitative test of splitting for comets with suspected multiple nuclei has been formulated using a model which assumes the motions of cometary fragments to be due primarily to outgassing. The model expresses the relative motion of the cometary fragments in terms of the time of splitting and the differential force, which are determined by measurements of the position angle and the separation distance between fragments. The test is applied to 18 comets suspected of having multiple nuclei, of which the comets Sawerthal 1888 I, Campbell 1914 IV, Whipple-Fedtke-Tevzadze 1943 I, Honda 1955 V, Wild 1968 III and Tago-Sato-Kosaka 1969 IX were found to be clear cases of split comets and Davidson 1889 IV and Periodic Giacobini 1896 V were judged to be likely candidates. At least three of the secondary nuclei confirmed can be classified as short-lived companions, while only two appear to be persistent.

New multiple systems in molecular clouds

Twenty-micron searches of the dense cores of the molecular clouds S140, S255, and Cepheus A have revealed the existence of multiple sources of infrared radiation which seem to be precursors to Trapezium-like clusters of OB stars. Two of the new sources are extended with unusually low color temperatures, less than 100 K. Observations with the Very Large Array with 1 mJy sensitivity have shown that three and possibly four of the infrared sources are associated with small H II regions. Multiple systems appear to be the rule rather than the exception in molecular clouds.

Large volume multiple-pass nuclear pumped laser

The paper describes research efforts at the Langley Research Center to study large volume, volumetric pumped laser systems and methods to extract lasing energy from these systems. Nuclear lasing has been achieved for a mixture of 800 torr He-3-Ar (1% Ar) with a peak thermal flux of 2.9 x 10 to the 16th n/sq cm-sec. Attention is given to the scaling of the multiple-pass box laser with increasing number of multiple passes and the scaling of laser output with path length.

Vorticity associated with multiple jets in a crossflow

Vortex patterns from multiple subsonic jets exiting perpendicularly through a flat plate into a subsonic crossflow were investigated. Tandem and transverse jet configurations were examined using a paddle wheel sensor to indicate the presence and relative magnitude of streamwise vorticity in the flow. Results are presented in the form of contour plots of rotational speed of the paddle wheel as measured in planes downstream from the jets and perpendicular to the crossflow. Well developed diffuse contrarotating vortices were observed for the configurations studied. The location and strength of these vortices depended on the multiple jet configuration and the distance downstream from the jets.

A parametric analysis of performance characteristics of satellite-borne multiple-beam antennas

An analytical and empirical model is presented for parametric study of multiple beam antenna frequency reuse capacity and interbeam isolation. Two types of reflector antennas, the axisymmetric parabolic and the offset-parabolic reflectors, are utilized to demonstrate the model. The parameters of the model are introduced and their limitations are discussed in the context of parabolic reflector antennas. The model, however, is not restricted to analysis of reflector antenna performance. Results of the analyses are covered in two tables. The model parameters, objectives, and descriptions are given, multiple-beam antenna frequency reuse capacity and interbeam isolation analysis of the two types of reflectors are discussed as well as future developments of the program model.

An investigation of thermal resistance in single- and multiple-cell GaAs MESFETs

Thermal resistances among FETs of a variable number of gates in parallel are compared. Although the thermal resistance per cell for multiple cells is higher, the total thermal resistance is still low because all the cells are parallel to one another. This implies that the multiple-cell structure is capable of dissipating more power than the single-cell structure and therefore of being used as a power FET.

Development and structure of a rectangular jet in a multiple jet configuration

Results of hot-wire measurements in an incompressible jet issuing from an array of rectangular lobes, equally spaced with their small dimensions in a line, are presented. The quantities measured include mean velocity and the Reynolds stress in the two central planes of the jet at stations covering up to 115 widths (small dimension of the lobe) downstream of the nozzle exit. Measurements are carried out on a single rectangular free jet and on the same jet in a multiple jet configuration. In the case of a multiple jet, the flowfield for downstream distance X greater than 60D (D = width of the lobe) resembles that of a jet exiting from a two-dimensional nozzle with its short dimension being the long dimension of the lobe. The field of turbulence is found to be nearly isotropic in the plane containing the small dimension of the lobes for X greater than 60D.

Next generation communications satellites: Multiple access and network studies

Following an overview of issues involved in the choice of promising system architectures for efficient communication with multiple small inexpensive Earth stations serving hetergeneous user populations, performance evaluation via analysis and simulation for six SS/TDMA (satellite-switched/time-division multiple access) system architectures is discussed. These configurations are chosen to exemplify the essential alternatives available in system design. Although the performance evaluation analyses are of fairly general applicability, whenever possible they are considered in the context of NASA's 30/20 GHz studies. Packet switched systems are considered, with the assumption that only a part of transponder capacit is devoted to packets, the integration of circuit and packet switched traffic being reserved for further study. Three types of station access are distinguished: fixed (FA), demand (DA), and random access (RA). Similarly, switching in the satellite can be assigned on a fixed (FS) or demand (DS) basis, or replaced by a buffered store-and-forward system (SF) onboard the satellite. Since not all access/switching combinations are practical, six systems are analyzed in detail: three FS SYSTEMS, FA/FS, DA/ES, RA/FS; one DS system, DA/DS; and two SF systems, FA/SF, DA/SF. Results are presented primarily in terms of delay-throughput characteristics.

Stagnation region gas film cooling: Spanwise angled injection from multiple rows of holes

The stagnation region of a cylinder in a cross flow was used in experiments conducted with both a single row and multiple rows of spanwise angled (25 deg) coolant holes for a range of the coolant blowing ratio with a freestream to wall temperature ratio approximately equal to 1.7 and R(eD) = 90,000. Data from local heat flux measurements are presented for injection from a single row located at 5 deg, 22.9 deg, 40.8 deg, 58.7 deg from stagnation using a hole spacing ratio of S/d(o) = 5 and 10. Three multiple row configurations were also investigated. Data are presented for a uniform blowing distribution and for a nonuniform blowing distribution simulating a plenum supply. The data for local Stanton Number reduction demonstrated a lack of lateral spreading by the coolant jets. Heat flux levels larger than those without film cooling were observed directly behind the coolant holes as the blowing ratio exceeded a particular value. The data were spanwise averaged to illustrate the influence of injection location, blowing ratio and hole spacing. The large values of blowing ratio for the blowing distribution simulating a plenum supply resulted in heat flux levels behind the holes in excess of the values without film cooling. An increase in freestream turbulence intensity from 4.4 to 9.5 percent had a negligible effect on the film cooling performance.

Some observations of flow structure in multiple jet mixing

Results of hot wire measurements in an incompressible jet issuing from an array of rectangular lobes, equally spaced with their small dimensions in a line, both as a free jet, and as a confined jet, are presented. In the case of a multiple free jet, the flow field for downstream distance x greater than 60D (D = width of a lobe) resembles that of a jet exiting from a two-dimensional nozzle with its short dimension being the long dimension of the lobe. The field of turbulence is found to be nearly isotropic in the plane containing the small dimension of the lobes for x greater than 60D. In the case of a confined multiple jet, the flow field is observed to be nearly homogeneous and isotropic for x greater than 60D.

Investigation of multiple scattering effects in aerosols

The results are presented of investigations on the various aspects of multiple scattering effects on visible and infrared laser beams transversing dense fog oil aerosols contained in a chamber (4' x 4' x 9'). The report briefly describes: (1) the experimental details and measurements; (2) analytical representation of the aerosol size distribution data by two analytical models (the regularized power law distribution and the inverse modified gamma distribution); (3) retrieval of aerosol size distributions from multispectral optical depth measurements by two methods (the two and three parameter fast table search methods and the nonlinear least squares method); (4) modeling of the effects of aerosol microphysical (coagulation and evaporation) and dynamical processes (gravitational settling) on the temporal behavior of aerosol size distribution, and hence on the extinction of four laser beams with wavelengths 0.44, 0.6328, 1.15, and 3.39 micrometers; and (5) the exact and approximate formulations for four methods for computing the effects of multiple scattering on the transmittance of laser beams in dense aerosols, all of which are based on the solution of the radiative transfer equation under the small angle approximation.

The multiple infrared source GL 437

Infrared and radio continuum observations of the multiple infrared source GL 437 show that it consists of a compact H II region plus two objects which are probably early B stars undergoing rapid mass loss. The group of sources appears to be a multiple system of young stars that have recently emerged from the near side of a molecular cloud. Emission in the unidentified 3.3 micron feature is associated with, but more extended than, the emission from the compact H II region; it probably arises from hot dust grains at the interface between the H II region and the molecular cloud.

Simplification of multiple Fourier series - An example of algorithmic approach

This paper describes one example of multiple Fourier series which originate from a problem of spectral analysis of time series data. The example is exercised here with an algorithmic approach which can be generalized for other series manipulation on a computer. The generalized approach is presently pursued towards applications to a variety of multiple series and towards a general purpose algorithm for computer algebra implementation.

Real-time multiple-look synthetic aperture radar processor for spacecraft applications

A spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) having pipeline multiple-look data processing is described which makes use of excessive azimuth bandwidth in radar echo signals to produce multiple-looking images. Time multiplexed single-look image lines from an azimuth correlator go through an energy analyzer which analyzes the mean energy in each separate look to determine the radar antenna electric boresight for use in generating the correct reference functions for the production of high quality SAR images. The multiplexed single look image lines also go through a registration delay to produce multi-look images.
