Search for resonant $WZ$ production in the fully leptonic final state in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for a $WZ$ resonance, in the fully leptonic final state (electrons or muons), is performed using 139 fb –1 of data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The results are interpreted in terms of a singly charged Higgs boson of the Georgi–Machacek model, produced by WZ fusion, and of a Heavy Vector Triplet, with the resonance produced by $WZ$ fusion or the Drell–Yan process. No significant excess over the Standard Model prediction is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section times branching ratio as a function of the resonance mass for these processes.

An investigation of the very rare ${K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}$ decay

The NA62 experiment reports an investigation of the ${K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}$ mode from a sample of ${K}^{+}$ decays collected in 2017 at the CERN SPS. The experiment has achieved a single event sensitivity of (0.389 ± 0.024) × 10 -10 , corresponding to 2.2 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10 -11 . Two signal candidates are observed with an expected background of 1.5 events. Combined with the result of a similar analysis conducted by NA62 on a smaller data set recorded in 2016, the collaboration now reports an upper limit of 1.78 × 10 -10 for the ${K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}$ branching ratio at 90% CL. This, together with the corresponding 68% CL measurement of (${0.48}_{-0.48}^{+0.72}$) × 10 -10 , are currently the most precise results worldwide, and are able to constrain some New Physics models that predict large enhancements still allowed by previous measurements.

Search for exotic Higgs boson decays H → 𝒜𝒜 with 𝒜 → γγ in events with a semi-merged topology in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for exotic Higgs boson decays H → 𝒜𝒜, with 𝒜 → γγ is presented, using events with a semi-merged topology. One of the hypothetical particles, 𝒜, is assumed to decay promptly into a semi-merged diphoton system reconstructed as a single photon-like object, while the other 𝒜 decays into two resolved photons. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The data agree with the standard model background expectation. Upper limits are set on the product of the Higgs boson production cross section and the branching fraction, σ(pp → H) ℬ(H → 𝒜𝒜 → 4γ), which range from 0.264 to 0.005 pb at 95% confidence level, for 𝒜 masses in the range 1 < m 𝒜 < 15 GeV. These limits are the most stringent to date in the 1–5 GeV m 𝒜 range.

Upper limits are set at 95% credibility level on the ratio of the \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) production cross-section times its branching fraction to D 0 pK - relative to that of the \( {\Lambda}_b^0\to {D}^0{pK}^{-} \) decay. The limits are set as a function of the \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) mass and lifetime hypotheses, in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and in the transverse momentum region from 5 to 25 GeV/ c . Upper limits range from 1 . 7 × 10 - 2 to 3 . 0 × 10 - 1 for the considered \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) mass and lifetime hypotheses.

Full 3D Kinetic Modeling and Quantification of Positive Streamer Evolution in an Azimuthally Swept Pin-to-Plane Wedge Geometry

Cathode-directed streamer evolution in near atmospheric air is modeled in 3D pin-to-plane geometries using a 3D kinetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code that simulates particle-particle collisions via the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. Due to the computational challenges associated with a complete 360° volumetric domain, a practical alternative was achieved using a wedge domain and a range of azimuthal angles was explored (5°, 15°, 30°, and 45°) to study possible effects on the streamer growth and propagation due to the finite wedge angle. A DC voltage of 6 kV is administered to a hemispherical anode of radius 100 μm, with a planar cathode held at ground potential, generating an over-volted state with an electric field of 4 MV/m across a 1500 μm gap. The domain is seeded with an initial ion and electron density of 10 18 m -3 at 1 eV temperature confined to a spherical region of radius 100 μm centered at the tip of the anode. The air chemistry model [1] includes standard Townsend breakdown mechanisms (electron-neutral elastic, excitation, ionization, attachment, and detachment collision chemistry and secondary electron emission) as well as streamer mechanisms (photoionization and ion-neutral collisions) via tracking excited state neutrals which can then either quench via collisions or spontaneously emit a photon based on specific Einstein-A coefficients [2, 3]. In this work, positive streamer dynamics are formally quantified for each wedge angle in terms of electron velocity and density as temporal functions of coordinates r, Φ, and z. Applying a random plasma seed for each simulation, particles of interest are tracked with near femtosecond temporal resolution out to 1.4 ns and spatially binned. This process is repeated six times and results are averaged. Prior 2D studies have shown that the reduced electric field, E/n, can significantly impact streamer evolution [4]. We extend the analysis to 3D wedge geometries, to limit computational costs, and examine the wedge angle’s effect on streamer branching, propagation, and velocity. Results indicate that the smallest wedge angle that produced an acceptably converged solution is 30°. The potential effects that a mesh, when under-resolved with respect to the Debye length, can impart on streamer dynamics and numerical heating were not investigated, and we explicitly state here that the smallest cell size was approximately 10 times the minimum λ D in the streamer channel at late times. This constraint on cell size was the result of computational limitations on total mesh count.

Search for bottom-type vectorlike quark pair production in dileptonic and fully hadronic final states in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search is described for the production of a pair of bottom-type vectorlike quarks ( B VLQs) with mass greater than 1000 GeV. Each B VLQ decays into a b quark and a Higgs boson, a b quark and a Z boson, or a t quark and a W boson. This analysis considers both fully hadronic final states and those containing a charged lepton pair from a Z boson decay. The products of the H → b b boson decay and of the hadronic Z or W boson decays can be resolved as two distinct jets or merged into a single jet, so the final states are classified by the number of reconstructed jets. The analysis uses data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 collected in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC from 2016 to 2018. No excess over the expected background is observed. Lower limits are set on the B VLQ mass at the 95% confidence level. These depend on the B VLQ branching fractions and are 1570 and 1540 GeV for 100% B → b H and 100% B → b Z , respectively. In most cases, the mass limits obtained exceed previous limits by at least 100 GeV.

Search for Higgs boson decays to a Z boson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Results are presented from a search for the Higgs boson decay H → Zγ, where Z → ℓ$^{+}$ℓ$^{−}$ with ℓ = e or μ. The search is performed using a sample of proton-proton (pp) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. Events are assigned to mutually exclusive categories, which exploit differences in both event topology and kinematics of distinct Higgs production mechanisms to enhance signal sensitivity. The signal strength μ, defined as the product of the cross section and the branching fraction $ \left[\sigma \left(\textrm{pp}\to \textrm{H}\right)\mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{Z}\upgamma \right)\right] $ relative to the standard model prediction, is extracted from a simultaneous fit to the ℓ$^{+}$ℓ$^{−}$γ invariant mass distributions in all categories and is measured to be μ = 2.4 ± 0.9 for a Higgs boson mass of 125.38 GeV. The statistical significance of the observed excess of events is 2.7 standard deviations. This measurement corresponds to $ \left[\sigma \left(\textrm{pp}\to \textrm{H}\right)\mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{Z}\upgamma \right)\right]=0.21\pm 0.08 $ pb. The observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level on μ is 4.1 (1.8), where the expected limit is calculated under the background-only hypothesis. The ratio of branching fractions $ \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{Z}\upgamma \right)/\mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \upgamma \upgamma \right) $ is measured to be $ {1.5}_{-0.6}^{+0.7} $, which agrees with the standard model prediction of 0.69 ± 0.04 at the 1.5 standard deviation level.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for pair production of third-generation leptoquarks decaying into a bottom quark and a $\tau $-lepton with the ATLAS detector

Abstract A search for pair-produced scalar or vector leptoquarks decaying into a b -quark and a $$\tau $$ τ -lepton is presented using the full LHC Run 2 (2015–2018) data sample of 139 fb $$^{-1}$$ - 1 collected with the ATLAS detector in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s} =13$$ s = 13 TeV. Events in which at least one $$\tau $$ τ -lepton decays hadronically are considered, and multivariate discriminants are used to extract the signals. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed and 95% confidence-level upper limits on the production cross-section are derived as a function of leptoquark mass and branching ratio $$\mathcal {B}$$ B into a $$\tau $$ τ -lepton and b -quark. For scalar leptoquarks, masses below 1460 GeV are excluded assuming $$\mathcal {B}=100$$ B = 100 %, while for vector leptoquarks the corresponding limit is 1650 GeV (1910 GeV) in the minimal-coupling (Yang–Mills) scenario.

Dynamic mode decomposition for gyrokinetic eigenmode analysis

Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is a post-processing approach to decompose a complex time series into a set of modes via spectral analysis. DMD provides a new and powerful method to recover gyrokinetic drift-wave eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions based only on the solution of the gyrokinetic-Maxwell initial value problem with almost no added cost to the initial value solver. In the present paper, DMD is applied to the CGYRO gyrokinetic code using a newly-developed CGYRO-DMD post-processor. CGYRO-DMD is numerically efficient, even on a single CPU. It does not set any restrictions on the plasma shape, beta (ratio of the plasma pressure to the magnetic field pressure), collisionality or number of species, and allows one to resolve numerous eigenmodes, even of comparable growth rates. In addition, DMD is not limited to unstable modes, but rather can capture stable and unstable branches simultaneously. In this work, we illustrate the accuracy of DMD through gyrokinetic analysis of mode transition for electromagnetic drift wave instabilities.

Search for a massless dark photon in c → u γ ′ decays

Using 7.9 f b − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the massless dark photon with the flavor-changing neutral current processes D 0 → ω γ ′ and D 0 → γ γ ′ for the first time. No significant signals are observed, and the upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the massless dark photon branching fraction are set to be 1.1 × 10 − 5 and 2.0 × 10 − 6 for D 0 → ω γ ′ and D 0 → γ γ ′ , respectively. These results provide the most stringent constraint on the new physics energy scale associated with c u γ ′ coupling in the world, with the new physics energy scale related parameter | C | 2 + | C 5 | 2 < 8.2 × 10 − 17 GeV − 2 at the 90% confidence level. Search for Higgs Boson Decays into a Z Boson and a Light Hadronically Decaying Resonance Using 13 TeV pp Collision Data from the ATLAS Detector

A search for Higgs boson decays into a Z boson and a light resonance in two-lepton plus jet events is performed, using a p p collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb–1 collected at √ s = 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The resonance considered is a light boson with a mass below 4 GeV from a possible extended scalar sector or a charmonium state. Multivariate discriminants are used for the event selection and for evaluating the mass of the light resonance. No excess of events above the expected background is found. Systematic Bayesian evaluation of resonance parameters in 19 Ne for the 15 O ⁡(𝛼, 𝛾)⁢ 19 Ne and 18 F ⁡(𝑝, 𝛼)⁢ 15 O reactions

Here, we present a comprehensive evaluation of the nuclear structure properties of 19 Ne using a novel and rigorous Bayesian statistical framework. Precise characterization of 19 Ne resonance parameters is critical for accurately determining reaction rates of the astrophysically significant 15 O ⁡(𝛼, 𝛾)⁢ 19 Ne and 18 F ⁡(𝑝, 𝛼)⁢ 15 O reactions, which govern breakout from the hot CNO cycle in x-ray bursts and influence 𝛾-ray emission in novae, respectively. By reconstructing likelihood functions from published experimental data—including asymmetric uncertainties and upper or lower limits—we derive posterior distributions for resonance energies, decay widths, and branching ratios. Our Bayesian approach systematically incorporates previously reported discrepancies among measurements, providing a statistically robust and consistent treatment of these uncertainties. The evaluated resonance parameters and associated uncertainties provide crucial input for stellar nucleosynthesis modeling, contributing to a refined understanding of explosive astrophysical phenomena.

Searches for additional Higgs bosons and for vector leptoquarks in $ττ$ final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Three searches are presented for signatures of physics beyond the standard model (SM) in $ττ$ final states in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, using a data sample collected with the CMS detector at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . Upper limits at 95% confidence level (CL) are set on the products of the branching fraction for the decay into $τ$ leptons and the cross sections for the production of a new boson $\phi$, in addition to the H(125) boson, via gluon fusion (gg$\phi$) or in association with b quarks, ranging from $\mathcal{O}$(10 pb) for a mass of 60 GeV to 0.3 fb for a mass of 3.5 TeV each. The data reveal two excesses for gg$\phi$ production with local $p$-values equivalent to about three standard deviations at m $\phi$ = 0.1 and 1.2 TeV. In a search for $t$-channel exchange of a vector leptoquark U 1 , 95% CL upper limits are set on the dimensionless U 1 leptoquark coupling to quarks and $τ$ leptons ranging from 1 for a mass of 1 TeV to 6 for a mass of 5 TeV, depending on the scenario. In the interpretations of the $M^{125}_{h}$ and $M^{125}_{h,EFT}$ minimal supersymmetric SM benchmark scenarios, additional Higgs bosons with masses below 350 GeV are excluded at 95% CL.

Search for single production of a vector-like T quark decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson in the lepton+jets final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for single production of a vector-like T quark with charge 2e/3, decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson is presented. The boson can be a standard model Higgs boson (H) or a new scalar boson (ϕ). In the first case, a branching fraction of 25% is assumed for the decay T → tH, while in the second case the T quark is assumed to decay exclusively to tϕ. The top quark is identified via its lepton+jets decay, and the neutral boson via its decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair. Final states with Lorentz-boosted topologies are considered and machine-learning techniques are exploited for optimal event classification. The analysis uses data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction for a T quark in a narrow-width approximation. They vary between 14.7 and 0.1 fb, for T quark masses in the range 1.3–3.0 TeV and ϕ boson masses in the range 25–250 GeV. These are the first exclusion limits set on the production of a single T quark decaying into a top quark and a new neutral scalar boson. For the decay channel into a top quark and a standard model Higgs boson, the results provide the best limits on production cross sections to date, for T quark masses above 2 TeV.

Impact of the continuum on the γ decay of the lowest 2 + states in 14 C

The half-life, T 1/2 =14.6(33) fs, of the 7012-keV 2$^{+}_{1}$ state in 14 C was measured in an experiment employing the 9 Be( 6 Li,pγ) fusion-evaporation reaction and the GODDESS setup. The γ decay from the 2$^{+}_{2}$ near-threshold resonance, located 142 keV above the 8176-keV neutron-emission threshold, was also investigated. An upper limit of 4.0 × 10 –5 was established for the γ-decay branching ratio with respect to the neutron-decay channel. The B(E2) transition probabilities for these 2$^{+}_{1}$ and 2$^{+}_{2}$ states were compared to predictions from the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum (SMEC). Significant modifications of these B(E2) probabilities, with respect to the standard shell model, are expected due to the coupling to the continuum. For calculations using the YSOX interaction, agreement was found for large negative values of V 0 , the coupling constant to the continuum. The central value V 0 = −645 MeV fm 3 results in a retardation by a factor ∼ 3.5 for the 2$^{+}_{1}$ → 0$^{+}_{1}$ transition, and an enhanced probability by a factor ∼ 2.5 for the γ-decay out of the 2$^{+}_{2}$ state. The latter factor reflects the effect of collectivization of the 2$^{+}_{2}$ excitation when the coupling to the continuum is taken into account.

Search for a τ + τ - Resonance in e + e - → μ + μ - τ + τ - Events with the Belle II Experiment

We report the first search for a nonstandard-model resonance decaying into $τ$ pairs in $e^+e^-$ → $μ^+μ^-τ^+τ^-$ events in the 3.6–10 GeV/c 2 mass range. We use a 62.8 fb -1 sample of $e^+e^-$ collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. The analysis probes three different models predicting a spin-1 particle coupling only to the heavier lepton families, a Higgs-like spin-0 particle that couples preferentially to charged leptons (leptophilic scalar), and an axionlike particle, respectively. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at 90% confidence level on the product of cross section and branching fraction into $τ$ pairs, ranging from 0.7 to 24 fb, and on the couplings of these processes. We obtain world-leading constraints on the couplings for the leptophilic scalar model for masses above 6.5 GeV/c 2 and for the axionlike particle model over the entire mass range.
