Purification and Concentration of 99 Mo from a UREX raffinate
The medical isotope 99m Tc ( t ½ = 6.0 h) accounts for over 80% of isotopes used in diagnostic nuclear medicine today and is normally derived from its transient equilibrium parent 99 Mo ( t ½ = 66 h). To reduce U.S. dependence on 99 Mo derived from HEU by foreign suppliers, the NNSA/M3 program—under the American Medical Isotope Production Act—has been tasked with facilitating the work of domestic 99 Mo suppliers that do not utilize HEU. Superconducting electron linear accelerators with high-Z converter targets can generate bremsstrahlung photons and neutron fluxes that can induce photonuclear reactions and LEU fission. After sufficient production intervals, targets can be rotated out and processed while another batch is irradiated. The process flow chemistry is shown in Figure 1. The irradiated U 3 O 8 targets are retrieved and dissolved in HNO 3 ; the volatile fission products are expelled and captured during this step. The HNO 3 liquor bearing the uranyl, fission and activation products is injected into the UREX suite of liquid-liquid extraction banks. The uranyl is partitioned in typical fashion using tri-$\textit{n}$-butyl phosphate (TBP) in a hydrocarbon diluent. The raffinate—comprising mainly 99 Mo and fission products—is then injected into the MoLLE (Molybdenum Liquid-Liquid Extraction) flowsheet, where the Mo is selectively extracted by an organophosphorous acid extractant such as di-(2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid) (HDEHP). Trace amounts of Nb, Zr, Np, I, and Te are co-extracted. The Mo is stripped using acetohydroxamic acid (AHA) and fed onto an anion exchange column. Following a series of hydroxide, HCl, and oxalic acid wash steps, the Mo can be recovered in NaOH/NaCl. A manuscript describing this process chemistry in more detail was recently published.

140,142 Ce Neutron Cross Section Resolved Resonance Region Evaluation [Slides]
ORNL has completed new RRR evaluations for 140,142 Ce. A lack of integral measurements made validation difficult, but the difference from Kadonis values suggests that more investigation of capture cross section is warranted. The complete file (with updated File2 and File32) has been submitted to NNDC repository for inclusion in next release of ENDF. A sponsor report publication is in progress.

Updates and Validation for the n+ 63,65 Cu Cross Sections [Slides]
The RRR and URR parameters for 63,65 Cu have been optimized to transmission and capture data. Several data sets have been newly incorporated in this evaluation. The angular distribution parameters have been adopted from differential measurements, as was done in ENDF/B-V. The performance of this evaluation in the integral benchmark calculations is favorable, and the validation is ongoing.

Neutron Capture and Transmission Measurements of 54 Fe at the RPI LINAC [Slides]
Transmission and capture measurements provide a wholistic set of experimental data to start resonance evaluation on 54 Fe. Analysis thus far supports that changes are needed in 54 Fe evaluation. Major accomplishments include the completion of radiative capture measurements of 54 Fe and the completion of total cross section measurements of 54 Fe. Future work includes the completion of data analysis relevant to capture and transmission measurements (May 2022), complete fitting of new resonance parameters to 54 Fe data (early 2023), and completion of all required deliverables for graduation (May 2023).
Status of the RRR evaluations for 233,235 U and 239 Pu [Slides]
The presentation discusses the R -Matrix Analysis of 233 U, 235 U, and 239 Pu and how their interplay among PFNS, TNC, RRR, and neutron multiplicities has a significant impact on the benchmarks. The presentation also discusses the 233 U improved agreement on benchmarks, an additional investigation on the thickness of beryllium reflectors, work on URR (up to 40 keV) and/or extension of RRR (600 eV to 2 keV). Also discussed is how the 235 U progresses on understanding reactivity rates related to depletion calculations, improved agreement with measured (capture) data is quite insensitive to resolve the negative slope, and how the 239 Pu negative slope as a function of the temperature is not understood yet (bias over 2σ lower than measured).
Validation of Recent Changes in Actinide Evaluations U-235, U-233, Pu-239 [Slides]
This presentation discusses U-235 updates, including fluctuations in the fission cross section in the URR range that were refined to represent measured data following the Paradela et al. evaluation. There were small changes to the low-energy resonances to improve the fit to measured capture data from RPI (capture reduced by 5% from 0.06-7.8 eV, by 7.7% from 7.8-11 eV) and there was a very small change to the thermal nu-bar within uncertainties. Discrete level data are stored in MF=6 (format requirement, no impact on calculations) and issues leading to negative eigenvalues in cross-covariances in the RR have been sorted out. In conclusion, many improvements were made to evaluated nuclear data of actinides in the resonance region and above, such as minor changes to U-235 including assessment of changes that depend on the finalization of the O-16 evaluation. U-233 improvements show significant progress in performance and some further improvement might be needed at intermediate energies. Pu-239 ORNL/IAEA evaluation is promising; however, more work is needed.
Flow Measurements in Pressurized Helium Gas Cooling Channels
Production of metastable Technetium-99 (Tc-99m) is vital to the medical imaging community. It is a radioactive tracer that emits gamma rays as it decays and it is these gamma rays that are then detected through imaging. Tc-99m is extracted from the decay of Molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) which has a half-life of about 2-3 days. One method of generating Mo-99 is using accelerator based technology, through the irradiation of Mo-100 using an electron beam. This is part of the NNSA’s mission to produce Mo-99 commercially, within the US, without the use of highly enriched uranium (HEU) in support of nonproliferation and global security. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is working with NorthStar medical Radioisotopes (NMR) on their efforts to produce Mo-99 from the irradiation of Mo-100 targets. The NMR target consists of an Inconel window that allows the electron beam to penetrate and irradiate a stack of Mo-100 discs. The irradiation process generates large amounts of heat and requires extensive cooling of the Mo-100 targets and target housing using pressurized helium gas. Before beam on target, the design of the target stack and target housing is tested at LANL using laser based diagnostics experiments. We quantify the velocity field of the helium gas around the target housing to estimate whether the cooling provided is sufficient for the design and to validate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. Fiber optic imaging is also developed for use during cold testing (without beam on target) as well as during irradiation, to obtain real time information on disc performance.
Pulsed Beam Heating Analysis of Curved Inconel Window with Pressurized Helium Gas Cooling
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is working with NorthStar medical Radioisotopes (NMR) on their efforts to produce Mo-99 through the irradiation of Mo-100 using Rodotron electron accelerators. Two Rhodotron accelerators are used to irradiate a double sided target. LANL collaborates with NMR to experimentally investigate beam effects on the target which consists of two Inconel 718 windows on either side of a stack of Mo-100 discs. LANL simulates the beam heating using an induction heater.
Improving the probability tables of the cross section of near closed-shell nuclei [Slides]
The level density distribution of near closed-shell nuclei is much lower than the typical nucleus, therefore, the cross sections show significant fluctuations, and these fluctuations are not predictable. The current methodology used to describe such behavior and construct the probability table of the cross section is based on the extrapolation of the average resonance widths and average resonance spacings from the resonance region and use these parameters to construct the probability table. Although this is a standard and widely used technique, it does not take into account the existing experimental data, such for total and the elastic cross section. Our goal is to extend the current theory and provide a more general approach to compute the probability distribution function of the cross section combining the existing probability tables and the available experimental data. Results will be presented for 90 Zr.
