Online Energy-optimal Routing for Electric Vehicles with Combinatorial Multi-arm Semi-Bandit

We have seen a rapid growth in the adoption of electric vehicle in today’s commercial mobility service market, from carrying passengers to the delivery of goods. One cardinal issue concerning the operation of EVs is the optimal routing of EV fleets with limited battery capacity. In this study, we investigate the energy-optimal online routing problem for the fleet of EVs, which focuses on identifying real-time minimum electricity consumption paths (MECP) for multiple OD pairs with limited information. We develop a multi-OD combinatorial multi-arm semi-bandit model (MCMAB) that uses the fleet of EVs as sensors in the transportation network and promotes the utilization of common information shared by different OD pairs. We further enrich the model with the path elimination policy to obtain MECP of high confidence while significantly reducing the number of learning iterations and the number of explorations needed. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the MCMAB and the efficiency of the path elimination policy with comprehensive numerical experiments in Manhattan, NYC. The results show that the proposed online routing algorithms can achieve near-optimal MECPs efficiently, and the quality of the solutions is significantly better than using the shortest travel time paths as approximate MECPs.

Smart-PGSim: Using Neural Network to Accelerate AC-OPF Power Grid Simulation

In this work we address the problem of accelerating complex power-grid simulation through machine learning ( ML). Specifically, we develop a framework, Smart-PGSim,which generates multitask-learning (MTL) neural network (NN)models to predict the initial values of variables critical to the problem convergence. MTL models allow information sharing when predicting multiple dependent variables while including customized layers to predict individual variables. We show that,to achieve the required accuracy, it is paramount to embed domain-specific constraints derived from the specific power-grid components in the MTL model. Smart-PGSim then employs the predicted initial values as a high-quality initial condition for the power-grid numerical solver (warm start), resulting in both higher performance compared to state-of-the-art solutions while maintaining the required accuracy. Smart-PGSim brings 2.60×speedup on average (up to 3.28×) computed over 10,000 problems, without losing solution optimality.

Improving the Cyber Resiliency and Security Posture of Public Power (Final Report)

The key objective of Improving the Cyber Resiliency and Security Posture of Public Power (Project) was to develop a culture of cyber resiliency and security within the public power community. The relative smaller size and unique structure of community-owned electric utilities can sometimes present challenges in immediate recognition of threats and the escalation of potential incidents. The Project offered targeted education, coordination, capability building, and resources to help the public power community better understand, install, and implement cyber and physical resiliency and security systems. The American Public Power Association (APPA) accelerated efforts to develop resources for and with the public power community to understand and implement resiliency, cybersecurity and cyber-physical solutions, including refining and improving the adoption of advanced control concepts. The Project consisted of four major multi-pronged tasks which included: 1) Advance cyber resiliency and security assessments; 2) Conduct, evaluate, and use the results of onsite vulnerability assessments; 3) Research, evaluate, deploy, and integrate both commercial and pre-commercial security technologies; and 4) Research, evaluate, and implement information sharing mechanisms.

A Holistic Framework for Teamwork Between Multiple Organizations or Areas of Expertise - 20021

Teamwork can harness the collective energy of people to solve complex problems. Yet, teamwork requires more than just putting people together. Complexity is added when people from different organizations or areas of expertise form a team to accomplish specific ends. Every organization is designed to fulfill certain purposes and, as such, it has unique objectives and values and it operates according to methods, procedures, and norms intended to fulfill those objectives and values. And each field of expertise, with its specialized knowledge, uses certain methods to approach and solve problems. Teams that consist of people from multiple organizations or areas of expertise often have the added demands of reconciling dissimilar methods of getting the work done, of sharing information and knowledge that everyone may not have, and of taking into account the goals and objectives of multiple parties. The ideas presented here help teams meet these added demands. This paper introduces a framework that highlights three aspects of teamwork: the physical aspects (what team members do), the mental/intellectual aspects (what team members know and think), and the social/spiritual aspects (what team members feel about others' needs and objectives). These three aspects are easy to remember and intuitive to work with, and when one aspect of a team's work is strengthened, the other two are strengthened as well. (authors)

Options for Achieving Cost Reduction in Advanced Reactors through Open Architecture

A key contributor to high capital costs and schedule overruns for new nuclear power plants is lack of standardization, driven by site-specific customization and construction of multiple designs by competing vendors rather than commitment to a single standardized program. While advanced reactor vendors typically individually target repeat construction of standardized units, the many competing designs could exacerbate the problem. “Open Architecture”, the open specification of requirements and interfaces for structures, systems and components (SSCs), has been proposed as a means of promoting standardization, by facilitating existing non-nuclear suppliers to enter the industry and/or allowing SSCs to be configured for more than one reactor within the same technology type. Contracting mechanisms that facilitate information sharing and alignment of incentives between stakeholders may complement such an approach. A preliminary scheme is presented for selection of SSCs for which such strategies could be adopted, based on a vendor make/buy decision model and stakeholder interviews. SSCs are categorized according to number of suppliers and their contribution to the reactor’s competitive edge. SSCs with many potential suppliers and a high contribution to competitive edge may be attractive for widening the supply chain via open specification of system requirements and interfaces, e.g., SSCs in the power island. SSCs with few suppliers and low contribution to competitive edge may be potential avenues for common system specification between vendors, e.g., some of the auxiliary SSCs. Potential cost reductions from such strategies will depend upon the size of the build program and the reactor type.

Spatiotemporal Automatic Calibration of Infrastructure Lidar, Radar, and Camera with a Global Navigation Satellite System: Preprint

Robust and accurate perception is important for modern intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which use sensors of various modalities for data fusion to create a digital twin of an intersection. Sensor calibration is an important process that creates a unified coordinate frame for the sensor output data so that it can be used for data fusion. Classical approaches for sensor calibration are time-consuming, require an overlapping field of view for feature matching, and are not feasible for ITS application as they cause disruptions in the flow of traffic. In this paper, we present a spatiotemporal automatic calibration approach to calibrate multiple infrastructure lidar, radar, and cameras installed at a traffic intersection. The approach uses global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning information shared by connected vehicles, and when the vehicle is detected by the sensor, we match the sensor detections with the GNSS coordinates. The proposed algorithm is evaluated with a real-world dataset utilizing detections from two radars, cameras, and lidars with a test vehicle instrumented with a post-processing kinematic (PPK)-corrected GNSS driving past the sensors installed at a four-way traffic intersection. The experimental results show that the proposed automatic calibration approach can achieve the transformation with a root mean squared error of less than 0.5 for radar and lidar and less than 2 for camera detections. The ability to rapidly calibrate sensors not only benefits initial installations, but can also be used for system health monitoring, while utilizing available connected vehicle data to test the real-time sensor fidelity and operational status.

Compressed Air Scoping Tool Teaches Energy Efficiency Best Practices

Standards and practices around compressed air systems are evolving as previous golden rules become outdated and unhelpful. One of the most referenced guidelines gives us the perfect example: The previous rule of thumb for compressed air storage – 1-3 gal/cfm1,2 – is now accepted to be 3-5 gal/cfm. This change in recommended storage is only one of many in the industry, resulting in industrial users lost in a sea of contradictory best practices. To help combat confusion and poor information sharing, a collaborative effort between Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Better Plants program created the Compressed Air (CA) Scoping Tool with the most up-to-date best practices in the industry (as of 2023). It can be used as a nonbiased, one-stop shop for best practice recommendations. The Excelbased tool is designed to be an initial step in understanding the operation of a compressed air system, a baselining tool enabling users to comprehend various aspects of a facility’s system from the production of compressed air to its application by end users.

Game Theory in Cybersecurity: A Review of Applications, Models, and Challenges

There are no aspects of society left unchanged by the Internet. From commerce to communication, from entertainment to engineering, every industry and sphere of influence exists in a new state thanks to the advent of the information age. This convenience, rarely controverted, comes with capricious actors, who wish to gain access to these systems for myriad reasons, be it financial, political, or mere intellectual gain. This paper presents information that can help readers to better understand the fundamentals of cybersecurity from a game theory perspective, such as coalitional games, Colonel Blotto systems, or how to find Nash Equilibrium. This paper also reviews how game theory can enhance understanding of cybersecurity through cooperative and non-cooperative methods, such as information sharing, defense modeling, and attacker analysis. The authors use the analysis to serve as a bridge for those in either field who need a way to best comprehend the methodologies of their contrasting fields.

House Advantage or House of Cards? Stacking the Deck for Data Videos Leads to Null Results: Preprint

Videos are becoming a ubiquitous means of sharing information on social media platforms. In response, data videos - short clips combining visualization with dynamic storytelling, audio descriptions, and spatial referencing - have gained popularity for communicating data. These affordances suggest that data videos might communicate data patterns, trends, and concepts more effectively than static visualizations, enhancing comprehension. However, existing research has not systematically tested this claim. To address this gap, we conducted three controlled studies to measure comprehension differences between data videos and static visualizations. Despite leveraging visual cues and audio explanations, no data video led to significantly better comprehension than an analogous static visualization. Our results suggest data videos are not categorically better and that future research should examine the tradeoffs between their engagement benefits and costs.

Federal R and D Reductions, Market Share, and Aerospace Information Usage

Reductions in federally funded research have a rippling effect over the entire aerospace industry. The decline in federal R&D spending in aerospace in recent years coincides with declines in U.S. aerospace market share, One of the lesser-understood factors in the declining U.S. market share may be the differing ways and intensity with which the U.S. and its competitors approach another trend, the increasing availability of large amounts of aerospace research information on the World Wide Web. The U.S. has been a pioneer in making research information available in electronic form, and the international community has long been a heavy consumer of that information. In essence, the U.S. contributes to the research efforts of its competitors, thus contributing to foreign aerospace consortiums efforts to gain market share in the aerospace industry, This may be a cautionary note to the U.S. aerospace industry to consider the use of R&D output in its own development and strategy because the foreign competition is using the U.S. scientific and technical literature.

Survey of Cybersecurity Governance, Threats, and Countermeasures for the Power Grid

The convergence of Information Technologies and Operational Technology systems in industrial networks presents many challenges related to availability, integrity, and confidentiality. In this paper, we evaluate the various cybersecurity risks in industrial control systems and how they may affect these areas of concern, with a particular focus on energy-sector Operational Technology systems. There are multiple threats and countermeasures that Operational Technology and Information Technology systems share. Since Information Technology cybersecurity is a relatively mature field, this paper emphasizes on threats with particular applicability to Operational Technology and their respective countermeasures. We identify regulations, standards, frameworks and typical system architectures associated with this domain. We review relevant challenges, threats, and countermeasures, as well as critical differences in priorities between Information and Operational Technology cybersecurity efforts and implications. These results are then examined against the recommended National Institute of Standards and Technology framework for gap analysis to provide a complete approach to energy sector cybersecurity. We provide analysis of countermeasure implementation to align with the continuous functions recommended for a sound cybersecurity framework.
