Calculation of Dose, Dose Equivalent, and Relative Biological Effectiveness for High Charge and Energy Ion Beams

The Green's function for the transport of ions of high charge and energy is utilized with a nuclear fragmentation database to evaluate dose, dose equivalent, and RBE for C3H1OT1/2 cell survival and neoplastic transformation as a function of depth in soft tissue. Such evaluations are useful to estimates of biological risk for high altitude aircraft, space operations, accelerator operations, and biomedical applications.

Mechanical properties of ion-beam-textured surgical implant alloys

An electron-bombardment Hg ion thruster was used as an ion source to texture surfaces of materials used to make orthopedic and/or dental prostheses or implants. The materials textured include 316 stainless steel, titanium-6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, and cobalt-20% chromium, 15% tungsten. To determine the effect of ion texturing on the ultimate strength and yield strength, stainless steel and Co-Cr-W alloy samples were tensile tested to failure. Three types of samples of both materials were tested. One type was ion-textured (the process also heats each sample to 300 C), another type was simply heated to 300 C in an oven, and the third type was untreated. Stress-strain diagrams, 0.2% offset yield strength data, total elongation data, and area reduction data are presented. Fatigue specimens of ion textured and untextured 316 stainless steel and Ti-6% Al-4% V were tested. Included as an ion textured sample is a Ti-6% Al-4% V sample which was ion machined by means of Ni screen mask so as to produce an array of 140 mu m x 140 mu m x 60 mu m deep pits. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the ion textured surfaces.

Ion-beam-induced atomic mixing

Calculations based on the diffusion model are presented of atomic mixing by ion bombardment. This mixing is assumed to have its basis, as does sputtering, in the collision cascades generated by the primary beam. Sharp interfaces within a target are seen to be smoothed by ion bombardment. Mixing may place fundamental limits on the resolution of ion microprobes.

Adherence of ion beam sputter deposited metal films on H-13 steel

An electron bombardment argon ion source sputter deposited 17 metals and metal oxides on H-13 steel. The films ranged 1 to 8 micrometers in thickness and their adherence was generally greater than the capacity of the measuring device; adherence quality depended on proper precleaning of the substrate before deposition. N2 or air was introduced for correct stoichiometry in metallic compounds. Au, Ag, MgO, and Ta5Si3 films 8 microns thick have bond strength equal to 1 micron coatings; the bond strength of pure metallic films up to 5 microns thick was greater than the epoxy to film bond (8000 psi). The results of exposures of coated material to temperatures up to 700 C are presented.

Plasma convection and ion beam generation in the plasma sheet boundary layer

Because of the dawn-dusk electric field E(dd), plasma in the magnetotail convects from the lobe toward the central plasma sheet (CPS). In the absence of space or velocity diffusion due to plasma turbulence, convection would yield a steady state distribution function f = V exp (-2/3) g(v exp 2 V exp 2/3), where V is the flux tube volume. Starting with such a distribution function and a plasma beta which varies from beta greater than 1 in the CPS to beta much smaller than 1 in the lobe, the evolution of the ion distribution function was studied considering the combined effects of ion diffusion by kinetic Alfven waves (KAW) in the ULF frequency range (1-10 mHz) and convection due to E(dd) x B drift in the plasma sheet boundary layer (PSBL) and outer central plasma sheet (OCPS). The results show that, during the early stages after launching the KAWs, a beamlike ion distribution forms in the PSBL and at the same time the plasma density and temperature decrease in the OCPS. Following this stage, ions in the beams convect toward the CPS resulting in an increase of the plasma temperature in the OCPS.

Transport of low- and medium-energy electron and ion beams in seawater and its vapors

A general theory of stopping power for electrons and ions in a target medium (gas, liquid, or thin solid foil) containing neutral as well as positive and negative ions is developed. The approach is quite accurate in the low- and medium-energy range (less than 1 MeV), where the Bethe stopping-power cross section is inaccurate. The energy transfer during individual collisions is treated by the binary-encounter approximation. The theory is applied to determine the stopping power of seawater, whose major components are H2O molecules and Na(+) and Cl(-) ions. The stopping-power cross sections for low- and medium-energy protons in water show excellent agreement with existing measurements.

Laboratory studies of Kapton degradation in an oxygen ion beam

Results are presented from a preliminary laboratory investigation of the degradation of the widely used polyimide Kapton under oxygen ion bombardment. Recent space shuttle flights have shown that Kapton and some other materials exposed to the apparent ram flow of residual atmosphere (at orbital velocity in low Earth orbit) lose mass and change their optical properties. It was hypothesized that these changes are caused by chemical interaction with atomic oxygen, aided by the 5-eV impact energy of atmospheric oxygen atoms in the ram. The reaction rate under O(+) bombardment seemed to be independent of incident energy over a wide range of energies. Although the flux of thermal ions in this experiment was much greater than the accelerated flux, the observed Kapton degradation was limited to the beam area and ram flow direction. This is consistent with an activation energy above the thermal energies but well below the beam energies. The results reproduce well the material loss, optical changes, SEM surface structure, and ram directionality of the samples returned by the shuttle. These factors, along with the lack of degradation under argon ion bombardment, are convincing evidence for ram flow oxidation as the mechanism of degradation.

Optical properties of ion beam textured metals

Copper, silicon, aluminum, titanium and 316 stainless steel were textured by 1000 eV xenon ions from an 8 cm diameter electron bombardment ion source. Simultaneously sputter-deposited tantalum was used to facilitate the development of the surface microstructure. Scanning electron microscopy of the ion textured surfaces revealed two types of microstructure. Copper, silicon, and aluminum developed a cone structure with an average peak-to-peak distance ranging from 1 micron for silicon to 6 microns for aluminum. Titanium and 316 stainless steel developed a serpentine ridge structure. The average peak-to-peak distance for both of these materials was 0.5 micron. Spectral reflectance was measured using an integrating sphere and a holraum reflectometer. Total reflectance for air mass 0 and 2, solar absorptance and total emittance normalized for a 425 K black body were calculated from the reflectance measurements.

All materials had solar absorptances between 0.93 (stainless steel) and 0.97 (silicon and aluminum). Total emittance values of 0.75, 0.80, and 0.85 for Si, Al, and Cu, respectively, resulted in a solar absorptance/total emittance ratio of approximately 1.2. Titanium and 316 stainless steel had values of 2.6 and 2.9, respectively, for this ratio.

Oblique Propagation and Temperature Effects on the Resonant Right-Hand Ion Beam Instability

The resonant right-hand instability (RHI) is often the dominant mode driven by reflected ions upstream of Earth’s quasi-parallel bow shock. In the tradition of Peter Gary, this paper further explores the right-hand instability using numerical solutions of the plasma dispersion relation and non-linear kinetic simulations, with parameters inspired by observations from NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. Agreement is found between the ion distributions in the particle-in-cell simulations and Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft data, which show the gyrophase bunching characteristic of the instability. The non-linear structures created by right-hand instability tend to be stronger when the plasma beta is lower. These structures have sizes of around 100 to 200 ion inertial lengths perpendicular to the magnetic field, presenting planet-sized disturbances to the magnetosphere. 2d and 3D hybrid particle-in-cell simulations show that modes with a range of propagation angles oblique to the magnetic field are excited, providing a ground to understand previous statistical studies of observed foreshock waves.

Anomalous auroral electron distributions due to an artificial ion beam in the ionosphere

Results are reported for the perturbation of the auroral ionosphere by the operation of an ion gun which injected about 100 mA of 25-eV Ar(+) ions at upgoing pitch angles over a discrete auroral arc. The major effects observed were the excitation of intense broadband electric field fluctuations at zero-10 kHz, and the appearance of streaming and isotropic heating in different parts of superthermal electron velocity space. A scenario is explored in which electron runaway or streaming is expected between the trapping speed and the critical velocity for cyclotron interactions with the waves, where the streaming electrons carry the current that would be carried by thermals or energetic electrons in the absence of the waves. A current of about 1.0 microA/sq m is carried by the streaming electrons. The gun-associated electrons were anomalous in the sense that their anisotropy was the opposite of that observed in the natural aurora.

Energetic ion beams at the edge of the plasma sheet - ISEE 1 observations plus a simple explanatory model

It has been found that energetic ions with energies in the range from 10 keV to 2 MeV are an important part of the geomagnetic tail particle population. A description is presented of energetic ion, three-dimensional distribution observations from ISEE 1 during 0400-2000 UT, May 3, 1978, a time when several encounters with the geomagnetic tail plasma sheet occurred. Pronounced energetic ion streaming is observed at each entry to and exit from the plasma sheet. Azimuthal gradients observed during these times indicate that this streaming occurs within two gyroradii of the plasma sheet edge. Streaming characteristics show both narrow and broad angular flows at arbitrary angles to B. These flows are observed simultaneously and individually. The time, energy, and pitch angle evolution of the ion fluxes show that ISEE 1 is encountering a dynamic and not a static equilibrium situation at the edge of the plasma sheet.

Growth of periodic nano-layers of nano-crystals of Au, Ag, Cu by ion beam

Multilayered thin films of SiO2/AU+ SiO2/, SiO2/Ag+ SiO2/, and SiO2/Cu+ SiO2/, were grown by deposition. We have previously shown that MeV ion Bombardment of multi-nano-layers of SiO2/AU+ SiO2/ produces Au nanocrystals in the AU+ SiO2 layers. An increased number of nano-layers followed by MeV ion bombardment produces a wide optical absorption band, of which its FWHM depends on the number of nano-layers of SiO2/AU+ SiO2/. We have successfully repeated this process for nano-layers of SiO2/Ag+ SiO2/, and SiO2/Cu+ SiO2/. In this work we used 5 MeV Si as the post deposition bombardment ion and monitored the location as well as the optical absorption's FWHM for each layered structure using Optical Absorption Photospectrometry. The concentration and location of the metal nano-crystals were measured by Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry. We will report on the results obtained for nano-layered structures produced by post deposition bombardment of SiO2/AU+ SiO2/, SiO2/Ag+ SiO2/, and SiO2/Cu+ SiO2/ layered systems as well as the results obtained from a system containing a periodic combination of SiO2/AU+ SiO2/, SiO2/Ag+ SiO2/, and SiO2/Cu+ SiO2/.

Instabilities excited by an energetic ion beam and electron temperature anisotropy in tandem mirrors

Tandem mirrors are magnetic confinement devices, which have the objective to prevent a leaking out of ions in a central (solenoidal) cell at the end. This is accomplished by making use of an electrostatic potential, which is maintained by a denser plasma in mirror end cells. In the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX), Correll et al. (1982) have successfully verified the basic concepts involved in the design of the considered device. However, it was also found that the simple tandem mirror could not be easily scaled to a reactor-size device. Approaches for solving the arising problems were studied, taking into account also the utilization of a thermal barrier. In this connection, Winske et al. (1985) studied the nonlinear development of the instability in a finite beta plasma with isotropic electrons. The present investigation is concerned with an extension of the calculations conducted by Winske et al., giving attention to the parameter regime of the TMX. It is found that three instabilities can occur.
