Measurement of partial vapor pressures of salt mixtures via combined horizontal transpiration and thermogravimetric analysis

A method combining thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and horizontal transpiration with elemental analysis via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry or ion chromatography enabled calculation of partial pressures of individual salts in molten mixtures. TGA quantified total mass loss, while transpiration identified vapor-phase composition. Furthermore, two chloride (NaCl-MgCl 2 , NaCl-MgCl 2 + UCl 3 ) salts and one mixed halide (LiCl-LiF + Li 2 O) salt were analyzed at 750 °C and 550 °C, respectively. NaCl and MgCl 2 vapor pressures were 2.19–2.61 × 10 -4 atm and 2.47–2.48 × 10 -5 atm (dependent upon the identity of the invesitgated mixture); UCl 3 was 1.42 × 10 -7 atm. LiCl and LiF vapor pressures at 550 °C were 1.53 × 10 -6 and 6.32 × 10 -6 atm, respectively. Additionally, the TGA method was validated against values from the literature for unary LiCl and LiF.

Horizontal 1 K refrigerator with novel loading mechanism for polarized solid targets

We describe a helium evaporation refrigerator used to cool dynamically polarized proton and deuteron targets for electron-scattering experiments using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer CLAS12 at Jefferson Lab. The geometry of the CLAS12 detector systems places severe design and construction constraints on the refrigerator and its ancillary equipment, resulting in a horizontal cryostat with a length of 4 m. The 16 cm 3 target samples, consisting of frozen ammonia (NH 3 or ND 3 ), are loaded at the upstream end of the cryostat and moved to the beam-interaction region using a novel transport mechanism. At this location they are cooled with superfluid helium and polarized via dynamic nuclear polarization at 1 K and 5 T. In this manner samples can be replaced and cooled to 1 K in about 30 minutes without disturbing any elements of the electron beam line or particle detection system. In conclusion, we estimate that this method saved 18 days of valuable beam time over the course of a recent, 88-day long experiment.

On falling film evaporator – A review of mechanisms and critical assessment of correlation on a horizontal tube bundle with updated development

Optimization of the energy efficiency and reduction of the greenhouse gas emission for the heat pump system is imperative to meet the net-zero goals at 2050. Chillers with falling film evaporator design not only possess better system performance but also contain less refrigerant inventory. Hence, accurate prediction of the evaporator performance is pivotal especially when charged with low-GWP refrigerant. Here, the study reviews the correlations for falling film evaporator with a horizontal tube bundle configuration. The major efforts of this study include four tasks: (a) literature review of the experimental studies and available empirical correlations; (b) comprehensive discussion of the falling film evaporation heat transfer mechanism; (c) development of a new rationally based correlation based on available literature; and (d) comparison of different correlations based on the existing data. The collected data includes 4114 data points from 8 sources, 6 refrigerants (R-600a, R-290, R-245fa, R-134a, R-1234ze(E), R-123), 5 types of the tubes (Plain, Turbo-GII-HP, GEWA-B, Low-fin, High-Flux), liquid Weber number from 2.2 × 10 –6 to 0.7, imposed vapor Weber number from 0 to 37.2, heat flux from 2.5 to 151.5 kW/m 2 , and film Reynolds number from 1 to 3159.8. The new correlation gives a MAD of 28.3%, and an R 2 of 0.86. Yet, the developed correlation considers various heat transfer mechanisms, including the transition point from falling film evaporation to the nucleate boiling, local evaporation, dry-out, mist flow, imposed flow, and enhanced tube effects.

Universal correlation for falling film evaporation on a horizontal plain tube

Falling film evaporators are widely used in many industrial sectors, such as desalination, refrigeration & air-conditioning, and chemical processes. The heat transfer correlations suitable for wider operating conditions and various refrigerants are useful for designing falling film evaporators. Although many researchers developed the correlation for their own experimental data, there is a limited universal correlation for falling film evaporators. In addition, the dry-out effects were not considered in the available universal correlations. Here, therefore, this study proposes a new correlation for falling film evaporation on a single horizontal plain tube, which includes nucleate boiling, film evaporation, and dry-out effects. The proposed correlation covers a wider range of operating conditions (Heat flux is of 2.5–168kWm -2 , and film Reynolds number is up to 3500), various refrigerants (R134a, R245fa, R1234ze(E), R123, R32, R410A, R290, and R600a), and the large number of experimental data (1101 data in total). The proposed correlation is validated against the available standard correlation with regard to mean absolute deviation (MAD) and R 2 values. The MAD of the new correlation is about 10%, respectively, which is the lowest among other correlations. Similarly, the R 2 showed a value of 0.92, which is the highest compared to the existing correlations. A simplified correlation is also proposed.

Comparing numerical accuracy and stability for different horizontal discretizations in MPAS-Ocean

This manuscript investigates the effectiveness of two possible horizontal discretizations for the global ocean model MPAS-Ocean, both applied to Spherical Centroidal Voronoi Tessellations (SCVTs). The first discretization is TRiSK, a C-grid, finite-volume method, that possesses many desirable mimetic properties, but has a low order accuracy. The second discretization was introduced for the first time by Peixoto (2016), and consists of modifications to the TRiSK scheme designed to achieve at least first-order accuracy in the L ∞ norm, with the loss of some of the mimetic properties. Tests on shallow-water and primitive-equation models show that the scheme due to Peixoto is indeed more accurate, but presents stability issues with respect to TRiSK. Here, TRiSK is indeed found to be often more stable in time and more robust with respect to errors in the geometric properties of the grid.

Horizontal Resolution Sensitivity of the Simple Convection-Permitting E3SM Atmosphere Model in a Doubly-Periodic Configuration

We develop a doubly periodic version of the Simple Convection-Permitting E3SM Atmosphere Model (SCREAM) to provide an efficient configuration for this global convection permitting model (GCPM), akin to a single column model often found in conventional general circulation models. The design details are explained, in addition to the extensive case library associated with the doubly periodic SCREAM (DP-SCREAM) configuration. We demonstrate that doubly periodic cloud resolving models are useful tools to explore the horizontal resolution sensitivity of GCPMs, in addition to replicating biases seen in the global models. Using DP-SCREAM, we show that SCREAM exhibits behaviors of a scale aware model as it is able to naturally partition between sub-grid scale (SGS) and resolved vertical transport across the gray zone of turbulence. We show that SCREAM is reasonably scale insensitive when run at resolutions from 1 to 5 km, but can exhibit sensitivity, particularly for the shallow convective regime, when run at resolutions approaching that of large eddy simulations. We conclude that SGS parameterization improvements are likely needed to reduce this scale sensitivity.

Near-canopy horizontal concentration heterogeneity of semivolatile oxygenated organic compounds and implications for 2-methyltetrols primary emissions

Semivolatile oxygenated organic compounds (SV-OVOCs) are important atmospheric species, in particular for the production and chemistry of atmospheric particulate matter and related impacts on air quality and climate. In this study, SV-OVOCs were collected in the horizontal plane of the roughness layer over the tropical forest in the central Amazon during the wet season of 2018. A sampler mounted to a copter-type, hovering unmanned aerial vehicle was used. Underlying the collection region, a plateau forest transitioned into a slope forest across several hundred meters. The concentrations of pinonic and pinic acids, which are monoterpene oxidation products, had no statistical difference over the two forests. By comparison, across the study period, differences in the concentration of 2-methyltetrols, which are products of isoprene oxidation, ranged from -70% to +480% over the two forests. The chemical lifetime of 2-methyltetrols in the atmosphere is sufficiently long that heterogeneity in the isoprene emission rate from the two forests followed by atmospheric oxidation does not explain the concentration heterogeneity of 2-methyltetrols. Standing waves and local meteorology also cannot account for the heterogeneity. Of the possibilities considered, the most plausible explanation is the direct emission from the forest of 2-methyltetrols produced through biological processes within the plants. Under this explanation, the rate of direct SV-OVOC emissions should be modulated by forest type and related environmental stressors. Direct emissions of SV-OVOCs should be more broadly considered for constraining and improving models of atmospheric composition, transport, and chemistry over tropical forests.

Modular horizontal pendulum wave energy converter: Exploring feasibility to power ocean observation applications in the U.S. pacific northwest

Abstract Marine renewable energy as a power source for ocean observation applications has the potential to allow longer deployment operations due to the consistent, higher, and denser energy available from this resource. This additionally could encourage deployments in remote locations where maintenance is costly or resource availability is low if dependent on solar power. More importantly, gaps in spatial data could be filled. This paper examines the feasibility of a modular horizontal pendulum wave energy converter to power National Data Buoy Center's Self‐Contained Ocean Observations Payload (SCOOP) off the coast of Washington State, U.S. The effect on power output was studied when the pendulum's radius arm, mass, and power take‐off damping were varied. Results using Matlab toolbox WEC‐Sim revealed positive correlation between radius arm length and mass to power output, where power maximised for optimal damping values. Seasonal trends in power were not significant, where a 20 kg pendulum mass was needed to meet the SCOOP base power requirement of 5 W throughout the year.

Visualization of R410A Flow Boiling Inside Horizontal Smooth Tubes under Diabatic Conditions

This article presents a novel approach to visualize the flow boiling in round tubes under “diabatic conditions”. In the visualization test section, a 3D printed round tube is placed inside a glass tube with secondary fluid at a higher temperature flowing in the annulus between the two tubes thus providing diabatic conditions. Experimental work was conducted for evaporating R410A flow in a horizontal smooth round tube with the inner diameter of 6.3 mm. Compared to the traditional adiabatic visualization technique, the more realistic evaporative condition is simulated and the developing evaporation process is captured. New insights for the flow behavior at low vapor quality are brought by this diabatic method. The vapor plug occurs at very low vapor quality, and this is attributed to the coalescence of bubbles generated on the heated tube wall. For the intermittent flow, liquid slug triggered by Kelvin–Helmholtz instability affects the nucleation on the tube wall. It brings the fresh liquid to rewet the dry surface and activate the nucleation sites. Finally, heat flux condition affects the heat transfer mechanisms during the flow boiling, and the heat transfer through the nucleate boiling mechanism increases as the heat flux increases.

Identification of Blue Horizontal Branch Stars with Multimodal Fusion

Blue Horizontal Branch stars (BHBs) are ideal tracers to probe the global structure of the milky Way (MW), and the increased size of the BHB star sample could be helpful to accurately calculate the MW's enclosed mass and kinematics. Large survey telescopes have produced an increasing number of astronomical images and spectra. However, traditional methods of identifying BHBs are limited in dealing with the large scale of astronomical data. A fast and efficient way of identifying BHBs can provide a more significant sample for further analysis and research. Therefore, in order to fully use the various data observed and further improve the identification accuracy of BHBs, we have innovatively proposed and implemented a Bi-level attention mechanism-based Transformer multimodal fusion model, called Bi-level Attention in the Transformer with Multimodality (BATMM). The model consists of a spectrum encoder, an image encoder, and a Transformer multimodal fusion module. The Transformer enables the effective fusion of data from two modalities, namely image and spectrum, by using the proposed Bi-level attention mechanism, including cross-attention and self-attention. As a result, the information from the different modalities complements each other, thus improving the accuracy of the identification of BHBs. The experimental results show that the F1 score of the proposed BATMM is 94.78%, which is 21.77% and 2.76% higher than the image and spectral unimodality, respectively. It is therefore demonstrated that higher identification accuracy of BHBs can be achieved by means of using data from multiple modalities and employing an efficient data fusion strategy.

A code-to-code benchmark for magneto-convection in a horizontal duct

Liquid metals and magnetic fields are used in many technical applications such as metallurgy, crystal growth and nuclear fusion reactors. When an electrically conducting fluid moves in a magnetic environment, electric currents and electromagnetic forces are generated that affect velocity and pressure losses in the flow. These magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) interactions have to be investigated to optimize the engineering processes. The characteristics of MHD flows depend on the geometrical configuration, the strength of the applied magnetic field, the electrical properties of fluid and structural materials and the thermal conditions. In the so-called blankets for fusion reactors, where liquid metals are used to breed the plasma fuel component tritium and to extract the generated heat, magneto-convective flows play a crucial role in determining heat and mass transfer. Therefore, the availability of numerical codes to simulate this type of flow is mandatory and their validation is a necessary step to guarantee the reliability of the results. For that reason, a benchmark problem has been defined to simulate liquid metal flows in a horizontal rectangular duct heated from below and exposed to a non-uniform magnetic field. Results obtained by five research groups using different codes are compared.
